Viaje a las Highlands

Rate this book

This was an Ok read. Didn't even come close to how good the first one book in the series was.

The h got on my nerves. She had low self-esteem and no selfworth which got annoying. That isn't surprising since the villian forced her to be whore or he'd hurt her daughters. I love how Robbie risked everything to protect Caralyn and her daughters. What a perfect man!

The book was pretty good but I wasn't as big on the ending. Still, this is a good addition to highlander series. I would highly recommend ths book but I would start with Rescued By A Highlander

I have read every book Keira Montclair has written it seems as soon as I notice she has a new book out I can't wait to get my hands on it. There will be parts I love, parts I roll my eyes but whatever my reaction the book does not get laid down. I did try to savor this book a little longer than I usually do, mainly because it was a hard book for me to read.

If you've never read a KM book before her h are usually written as coming from an abusive past. This one takes things a step further IMO. Caralyn Crauford is fighting to protect her two young daughters from the Norsemen who are attacking her village. Desperation forces her to send her daughters on ahead to hide as she tries to draw them in another direction. Her plan works but creates another problem when she is caught and being drug towards the coastline and finds herself looking at several men whooping in excitement from a ship.

She is saved by Captain Robbie Grant, brother of Laird Alex Grant. He brings her back to the camp and discovers she has two young lassies hiding and awaiting her return. The biggest disturbing thing I felt from this story was that our h is not bothered by standing in the middle of a large group of soldiers in a transparent shift. She has been so overused that she no longer cares if a man uses her body. She makes several references that she knows what men want. It painted Caralyn in an ugly light for me.

She has been trapped in this dark world for the past 5 years after the death of her husband. She claims to not know love but yet she had a good relationship with her father. He taught her how to fish and she met her husband fishing. Her mother, on the other hand, taught her that only whores enjoy making love. The villain is a disgusting ingrate that takes note of her desperate situation to feed her daughter Ashlyn and uses it to get what he wants. This is when the book got really dark. *************************SPOILER*********************************************

Malcolm informs her that he can insure her daughter is fed but in return she is to service him and his friends. One of the men are her youngest daughters father, she doesn't know which one. I found it hard to believe that such a cruel, unfeeling man would have allowed her to carry the baby full term. I was angry with Robbie because he is made aware that Malcolm is not a good man and is looking for her but he follows his duties instead. I realize it is in his character to be a warrior first but I didn't like the direction this took the author. Caralyn and her daughters have been left at a priory and she is having a wet dream about Robbie when she is woken up by Malcolm. He has found her and proceeds to reacquaint himself with her. I did not like that and felt it took the book too dark.

He uses her daughters against her to hold her in place. They are kept separate from one another and she has no choice but to service him whenever he desires. It was hard to read this part and I felt myself wanting to put it down for a while. Robbie does come to her rescue but I felt like he got there too late. You feel the feelings between the two but then the author tarnishes it with this man repeatedly using her. Understand that these moments were not written in detail except for the moment at the priory when Malcolm can't keep his hands or mouth to himself. It wasn't sexy to me but gross.

Even after Malcolms defeated the darkness still hovers over them. Caralyn has such a low opinion of herself and will not allow herself to be happy with Robbie. I wish she would have skipped some months and let us see the couple as a happy, loving couple. Instead we are taken on another journey in which Robbie separates her from her girls again forcing her to realize her true potential. More drama is added when Caralyn's youngest, Gracie, becomes catatonic and no one knows why.

The only thing that saved the story for me was the girls. Gracie is 2 and does not talk or like any man in the beginning but after meeting Robbie she feels safe with him and Ashlyn who is 8 is like a little mother. They are given hope thanks to the Grant clan and it made me hopeful but there was too many dark moments in the book to feel like she was truly saved. The side couple in the book is Caralyn's friend Gwyneth was drugged and taken to Norsemen's boat. She is taken to the priory by Tomas, Robbie and a friend Logan. She is very spirited and seeks revenge against the man who drugged her. Logan and her do nothing but argue but when he learns she's left the Grant Castle to seek her vengeance Logan takes off after her. This leads you to believe that they are the next installment in the series.

My patience was challenged in this book and I am hesitant to try the next book. If the direction the author seeks is to write of a woman being forced to comply I do not want to follow. If her h is written as a stronger more confident woman that is trying to put her past behind her and finds love that is a different story.

DNF I listened to the audio book through chapter 8. I am not impressed and I do not know why it has such high reviews. Carolyn jumps in bed with Robbie the first or second night after she meets him. She is in love with him. Dumb. I will skip this author in the future.

I really liked Robbie and Caralyn. I also love how the families in this series aren't always typical. I don't think I've ever read a highland romance with a single mom. I also was not expecting the book to discuss sex work. I like that this book centers around the same war/battle as the last book but focuses on what a different brother, Robbie, was doing.

Back when I left a review for the first book in this series, I said to be warned that it was not a book that would appeal to everyone. I say that again here, this is a book that ventures into an area that most romance novels this days tend to stay far FAR away from. Abuse. Physical and emotional alike. If you don't like to read about it at all in your romance novels, you can stop right here and move onto another book. You will not like this book.

For me? I don't mind it being talked about as long as it's done well, which here I think it is. The abuse (like in the first in this series) was never EVER between the main pairing. The heroine came into the story and the relationship with a LOT of baggage from a rough past and in this case a tough present as well. She has been forced to sacrifice a lot for her children and the book does not really sugar coat it. Not one little bit. And honestly... that's why I really like this one.

I give the author total respect for not shying away from such a touchy topic. Often you read in a romance novel about heroines having had hard lives but you never really see it. I feel more Caralyn because it's not just mentioned in passing what she's had to endure, you have to watch her go through it and feel sorry for her. Sympathize for her. It only makes watching her become healed by the love that Robbie feels for her all that much more satisfying.

Does the talk of abuse ever go a little to hard? Maybe ONCE. I could have done without what happened to Caralyn between meeting Robbie and when they started to head for his home, but other then that I never thought that it went past the point of 'too much information.' It's never really described but it's certainly talked about and implied.

Overall, again this is not a book for everyone. I feel like this particular subject matter will make some readers uncomfortable. And that's okay. Just know going into it that if you read this book you WILL be face to face with some pretty touchy stuff. If are not bothered by it, you might like it. Me? People might think me crazy but I personally love watching characters that have lived tragic or hard lives learn to love and be healed by that love... so this is my kind of book.

Journey to the Highland is the first book in Keira Montclair's series Clan Grant. The description, at the Amazon web sight, of the book is what first attracted me to this book. I never read anything by this author so I only purchased the one book.

The premise of the novel is about Madeline MacDonald who after loosing both her parents when she was fifteen has been a victim of her stepbrother's cruelty. Beaten and torchered almost daily by him. Then at eighteen forced into a betrothal to a man who was allowed to abuse and rape her, her only way out is to escape to a convent. Laird Alexander Grant is honor bound to rescue Maddie after seeing the bruises on her face. What he doesn't realize is that once he holds the beaten lass in his arms, his heart will never be the same. He vows revenge for the abuse she was forced to endure and yearns to make the sweet woman with an iron will his. He wants to help her fight the demons in her mind left behind by her abusers' horrid treatment.

This was surprisingly good. I would rate the sensual level a 5. Great story strong characters and I will definitely be buying book two. Each of the four books in the series can be read on their own, each with their own happy ending. I recommend this read.

Caralyn is a young mother of two daughters who does whatever is necessary for her daughters. Capt. Robbie Grant rescues her just as she was being kidnapped in the midst of battle. It seems, though, that Caralyn's daughters might be lost even though the Captain has rescued her. Robbie finds the young girls and reunites mother and daughters... and they both lose their hearts to each other.

Muy buena

Excelente me encantó , es una novela donde se ve lo que vale una persona independiente de su situación, Robie y Caralyn nos enseña que el amor ayuda a ser mejor y amarse a su mismo.

This is a good Highlander romance, but I didn't believe that Caralyn would have recovered from her years of abuse so quickly. In addition to the sexual abuse she suffered, she had also been taught to feel guilty for enjoying sex -- with that kind of history, it seems like her recovery would take years.

I liked both Robbie and Caralyn, but thought that her sudden recovery was unrealistic. Robbie tried to be understanding, but didn't do a very good job -- he had no idea just how much emotional damage that kind of trauma causes.

I was glad that Robbie and Caralyn found their HEA -- they were good together, and Caralyn needed someone to be there for her.

I also liked most of the other characters, especially little Ashlyn and Gracie, who were both adorable -- and I liked how good everyone was to the children. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

This one gets 4 stars from me.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Journey to the Highlands by Keira Montclair
Clan Grant Series Book Four
Captain Robbie Grant is hoping to prove himself now that he's in charge of the Grant warriors. The Norsemen are heading their way—war is imminent. When they head to a small coastal area, he finds a Norseman attacking a woman. Robbie had no idea that one event was about to change his life forever.

Caralyn Crauford would do anything for her daughters. And she had. Under the thumb of a cruel man who used her daughters to control her—she felt hopeless. Until she found out there were good men in the world. Men like the Grants and their warriors.

This author does not write characters who have life easy. She writes as it may have been. A woman on her own trying to care for her daughters without many options. Bad things happen to her characters on the road to happily-ever-after...but they do always end well. Love these stories.

Hip hip hooray for the highland ers!

Keira, I am enjoying your highlander books so much! Each book carrying a little more of each family and the love and caring they have for each other the hardships and no judgment of their pasts. A few years ago I found out that my and my husband both have a Scottish heritage if you go by our names... My maiden name is Harper under Clan Buchanan and my married name Tullis under Clan MacDuff. My father when I think of him I always picture as a Scottish highlander because of his size, he was 6'4" weighed close to 400 lbs., not fat by any means. He had huge hands and arms and chest. So when I read about the men I picture him. My sons are all 6'2 and 6'3 my daughters 5'10 & 5'11. Two of my grandsons are 6'4 and 6'5 and one 6'2 my granddaughters 5'9, 5'10 & 5'11. I can't think of any heritage I would be prouder to be a part of. Thank you for your books I am looking forward to all the rest. Oh my grandfather's name was Lamb which would be Clan Watson I believe.

One problem...

Kindle Unlimited Purchase

I have one problem with this book.... I DID NOT WANT TO PUT IT DOWN! I guess as problems go that is a great one to have with a book... Again you have the damsel in destress being saved by the all mighty Highlander... ( Be still my heart ) Loki is still special to my heart... What a mighty Highlander worrior he is going to be... The woman that turns his head is going to be one lucky lady...

I'm not going to give anything away about this book but one warning with this book it has a trigger... But Robbie comes to her and stops anything from happening... So a word to the wise about that part.
Have to stop here.. can't hold off... I have to start the next book in the series... Think God I don't have to wait for it to come out..... If you need me you know where I'll be... In the highlands spending time with my Highlander.... only in my dreams!!

The power of love.

Robbie is a captain in the Kings army. Caralyn is an abused women with 2 daughters living alone at the mercy of a cruel man. When the Norse invade Caralyn is captured and dragged on the beach to an awaiting shipment full of Norsemen when Robbie rescues her and her daughters. She has lived the last 5 ears as an unwilling mistress to Malcolm who uses her and shares her with his friends. She agrees because he threatens her daughters if she doesn’t. She has lost all her self esteem and believes she is not worthy of love. Robbie rescues her and her daughters again and brings her to clan Grant in an effort to keep her safe and show her she has value.

Finally a [MFC] who is not a saint! I read this through KU. The 4th book in the series, this book finally gives us a more realistic heroine. But, this time the plot was a bit of a mess.

***SPOILERS***

There were two major goals- (1) save the h and her daughters, and (2) quietly bring "cargo" from a wrecked ship to a priory and discover who owned the ship. Plot (1) completed. Plot (2) did not. Although the H could have learned what was needed from h's friend he never asked because he was too busy wooing and protecting his h. Somehow I think a directive from the king's steward should've taken precedence. The ending bothered me. That's why I couldn't give it a 5. 4 stars.

I’m invested in this series, but there are so many things that bother me about the books. I feel the author loses focus on the details and forgets that she is writing in a different time. I am enjoying the adventure, but find I get distracted when the author uses words that I don’t believe were used in that time. That being said, I did like Robbie. Caralyn was too innocent for the background she was supposed to have lived. That being said, I will continue with the series, because I do enjoy the Grant clan.

I really enjoyed Robbie and Caralyn's story. It was so good. I cried a lot. And I couldn't put it down. What it took for these two to get together. Had me holding my breath. lol And the babies. So cute. So sweet. They really added to the story. A sweet love story with action, humor, romance, children, family, and a lot more. And a few bits of anger and sadness that made it worthwhile to get to where the story was heading. Highly recommended.

Tender

I love the way Keira develops her characters. Caralyn surely had a rough way. I can speak as a single mom it is hard making sure your child(ren) are well and happy. I can't even imagine what it was in the era. The chat are well developed and the Grants are an amazing family. I enjoy how each are stand alone books but they are intertwined. Loved it!!!

Good

I don’t like spoilers, so won’t let any slip.
I got Robbie & Caralyns book as a freebie, so wasn’t expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised though.
Their story was a fast paced & heartbreaking read.
I’m really looking forward to the other stories in the series and to reading more from this author

This was a sweet story about a woman with a low opinion about herself. And the highlander who falls for her almost immediately and helps her to see her worth.

I liked the family this author has created. And since this is the fourth book in the series the other couples were all present and involved. But the story didn’t captivate me enough to make me want to go read their stories.

And Ashlyn Will grow up to be a fine young woman as well. BUT best of ALL is Caralyn learning that she does indeed have Worth. THAT SHE would make A wonderful AND LOVE wife FOR Robbie Grant. Want to read about their first born whenever the time comes around. Okay ❤

Awesome story!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was filled with good and evil, love and friendship, horrible men and honorable ones as well. Thank goodness that I was no where near the horrible one, for I would have gladly run him through with any sword that I could have found!

What is love?

This is a passionate story of love. Love is different things to different people. Love is more than a sexual act...love is of and from the heart Above all else.. everyone is worthy of love....it is at its best when the recipient loves not only the object of their affection but love themself first.

I loved this one! I’m stuck for now on the Grant clan series. The only thing I don’t like about it is the sex scenes are cringe in the way they’re described. Other than that I loved the story. I wish they were longer! On to the next one! Also, I’d like it if the antagonist didn’t always sound so silly, maybe a little more scary.

It's another good story....

but someone needs to tell Caralyn prostitution is not always her only option. (That's a joke people) This is a great love story, steamy sex and a Highlander that is so freaking romantic. On to Book Five.
