About the author

William Shakespeare was an English playwright, poet, and actor. He is widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "the Bard"). His extant works, including collaborations, consist of some 39 plays, 154 sonnets, three long narrative poems, and a few other verses, some of uncertain authorship. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare remains arguably the most influential writer in the English language, and his works continue to be studied and reinterpreted.
Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner ("sharer") of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men after the ascension of King James VI and I of Scotland to the English throne. At age 49 (around 1613), he appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive; this has stimulated considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, his sexuality, his religious beliefs, and even certain fringe theories as to whether the works attributed to him were written by others.
Shakespeare produced most of his known works between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories and are regarded as some of the best works produced in these genres. He then wrote mainly tragedies until 1608, among them Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth, all considered to be among the finest works in the English language. In the last phase of his life, he wrote tragicomedies (also known as romances) and collaborated with other playwrights.
Many of Shakespeare's plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. However, in 1623, John Heminge and Henry Condell, two fellow actors and friends of Shakespeare's, published a more definitive text known as the First Folio, a posthumous collected edition of Shakespeare's dramatic works that includes 36 of his plays. Its Preface was a prescient poem by Ben Jonson, a former rival of Shakespeare, that hailed Shakespeare with the now famous epithet: "not of an age, but for all time".

Shakespeare siempre es garantía.

Hace tiempo que me sumergí en la pluma de este dramaturgo; primero con Romeo y Julieta y luego con Hamlet. Y, como me quedé con ganas de más, encontré esta compilación de algunas de sus obras.

Contiene: Romeo y Julieta; Macbeth; Hamlet; Otelo; el sueño de una noche de verano; la fierecilla domada; y, por la que me decidí a comprarlo: el mercader de Venecia. Este título ya hace tiempo había llamado mi atención por el solo nombre.

Volviendo al libro, por tener obras completas, pueden leerse en el orden que se desee, como hice yo; eso sí, tomándonos el tiempo necesario para poder disfrutar cada una.

Si bien Shakespeare es conocido por sus dramas, en este libro vienen dos comedias muy divertidas: sueño de una noche de verano y la fierecilla domada.

En estas obras se retratan las pasiones humanas como la envidia, el odio, la avaricia, los celos, la venganza… pero también el amor, la entrega, el honor y la honestidad. Hay para todos los gustos.

Definitivamente, es un gran acercamiento al autor y a algunas de sus obras. Mi favorita, de la que tengo, sumando este ejemplar, tres ediciones, es Romeo y Julieta. Por supuesto, no demerito de ningún modo las demás obras, todas maravillosas, tal vez incluso más que ésta; pero para gustos colores.

Seguiré leyendo más de este autor; aún no tengo el libro en físico, pero en la mira tengo: "el Rey Lear".

William Shakespeare, un escritor inglés del período Isabelino, a decir de muchos una joya de la corona de esos tiempos y que tiempos terribles y llenos de intrigas políticas, de la realeza y del poder...un ambiente donde nuestro escritor tomo muchas veces su temática, su inspiración y una gran exigencia para satisfacer a la nobleza, de allí un lenguaje culto y también para satisfacer a la plebe, de allí que también hubiesen comedias sin bajar el nivel culto de sus escritos, poesía y teatro. De esta obra cumbre del amor prohibido, la pasión ineludible y la juventud de sus protagonistas que sabiéndose enemigos y amantes deciden amarse hasta la muerte, y no queriendo que ni la muerte los separe, se rinden a ella con la esperanza de estar juntos en el mas alla. Se hicieron muchas versiones fílmicas la que más me agrada es la puesta en escena de Franco Zeffirelli.

William Shakespeare es considerado un maestro de la literatura me preguntaba muchas veces porqué? y al leer un poco de su obra pude entender lo grandioso de este hombre, de su pluma.

Auténtico, verídico, sarcástico, irónico, acertado es una pequeña descripción de lo que fue para mí conocer a Shakespeare, sus personajes reflejan sin límite de tiempo y lugar la naturaleza, las complejidades de todo lo que nos hace ser humano, nos muestra de cara lo que somos a través del teatro, la simpleza de sus diálogos y la rapidez de sus escenas nos hacen cuestionar constantemente si no seremos Macbeth, Otelo, Yago, Hamlet o cualquiera de ellos.

Me impacta lo evolucionado que era para su época, quizás un poco irreverente y sin duda alguna lo recomendaría leer porque a través de sus historias nos enseña, un maestro de maestros. Mi historia favorito OTELO.
