Ran the Peerless Beauty #10

Jardin secret, Tome 10

Rate this book

Ran had one fateful encounter that lead to her going to the same school as Akari and the boy at the centre of it is back in her life. Is there one last gasp of rivalry left in this series, or is there a more peaceful reconciliation on the way?

Oh, I do love it when a book just nails the ending. It’s strange to say, since I was never particularly excited when a new volume showed up, but this was actually a really good shoujo with two very likeable leads and a lot of heart. It maintained a reasonably strong level of quality straight through to the ending.

I think there’s actually a rather good message behind this volume about being the sum of your experiences and how things that are not pleasant to go through can actually be very good for you in the end. As somebody who has flown too close to the sun more than once (and had it turn out okay) I really liked this take.

This is articulated by the difference between Ran and Mochizuki, the boy who shattered her confidence. He’s a rude jerk at first, but Ran manages to get through to him after much persistence and we further learn that his home life isn’t exactly easy. There’s some vicious pressure on him that caused him to lash out and inadvertently ruined Ran’s chances.

But, you know, Ran met Akari and all her friends this way and it also helped her figure out what she wanted to do for her life. Yeah, Mochizuki has some ways to go to learn to be a decent human being (you’d think THIS was his actual stumbling block to his job aspirations but apparently not?), but Ran has come a long way and she recognizes that, even if the source wasn’t so great (and, to be fair, he is aware of how awful he was and feels bad for it).

The rest of the book is palling around and some fun fallout from everybody realizing that Ran and Akari are dating (Ran being praised for her apology letter is seriously peak Ran). Tomo stands up for Ran like a champion - her fit when Mochizuki shows up is the kind of thing you’d want from a best friend.

Ran and Akari go on a very sweet date, there’s some amusing bedroom “action”, and Tomo and Yamada continue the unenviable spiral of one person who is too dense to take the hint and another who is too violent at delivering the hint.

It ends with a very unnecessary revelation that puts Ran and Akari in the ‘destiny’ category that I think is arguably super pointless, but the rest of it is very sweet and we avoid a flash forward which I was kind of relieved at (they don’t ALL need to flash forward!). I do love the way Akari supports Ran through all this like a good partner, you know, actually would.

The bonus manga is just a little smidgen more of Tomo and Yamada maybe getting a little closer and it’s the perfect little morsel to end on. I really hope the mangaka goes back to those two as I would definitely read a spin-off with their relationship.

4.5 stars and, yes, I’m rounding up because this does a spectacular job juggling a relatively late addition to the story, paying off all the things that happened on the way, and wrapping up with the other romance going on. A very worthy ending to the series.

Since I've reached the end of this series, I figured I'd just put my overall thoughts here.

- This is a 5/5 shojo for me and I am holding out hope for a print release someday so I need everyone to read it and rave about it with me please. :) I mean come on, it's a romance between a boy whose family owns a flower shop he helps out in and a girl who is the sole member of the garden club and doesn't have many friends due to classmates being intimidated by her - not due to her being scary but because she is so pretty and good at everything. Both have Golden Retriever energy!!!! SO CUTE. And one of them makes the other a bookmark with pressed flowers in the first volume!!!!! Still the cutest thing to me.

- Akira and Ran are the sweetest couple and I love that there were only minor disruptions for them throughout this story making it all the more focused on them navigating what seems to be their first romantic relationship. And while it took them AGES it felt like to kiss (lol) I love we got to a point they were discussing taking the physical part of their relationship further together and how realistic these moments were.

- This series is just so cute it makes me sick. I thought I'd be sad to see it end, and I am, however, Ammitsu really nailed the ending of this so I'm feeling satisfied. We don't get a big jump to the future at the end but honestly, I prefer it that way and being able to imagine myself where they would be in a few years time.

So yeah, read this if you're looking for a super sweet shojo featuring THE most wholesome characters and lots and lots of flowers. It has made its slot as one of my favorite shojo series to date.

Sad it’s the end! I will say I needed more bonus chapters, but it was well done and a nice ending, I’m just greedy 😝

A really good shoujo without all the annoying tropes that has me on wanting to throw my phone.
Loved the artwork and thought the characters were well done.
Thought the story arc was good uniquely itself. (Not carbon copies of others:)

Highly recommend the series! Heart warming love story that you can binge in a day :)

I loved this series. I am reading this authors current series and just couldn’t get enough so I checked this out from the library. What an absolute delight it was. This doesn’t have an epilogue but I did like how the ending was about her growth and I do believe that these two are HEA. The art lovely. How was this so sweet and they are all over each other at the same time. I destroyed this series.

This volume seemed exceptionally short, but maybe I’m just sad to see it end. It felt a little rushed, and I’m not completely satisfied with how they tied up the Mochizuki incident. But overall, I do recommend the series, as it is a calm and fairly wholesome kind of manga. Sometimes you just need a break from the drama.

Sad that it was too short - or maybe it was just so good that I read it fast. Everything about this was wonderful, from the characters and their development, the plot, the pacing. It was simple, yet so wholesome and heartwarming.

Definitely a new fave and a re-read in the future.

This was pure fluff, so sweet and beautiful! I especially loved how the flower meanings were integrated into the story, which sets it apart for me from other shoujo romances i've read.
This definitely solidifies Ammitsu as a top romance author for me!

This series was so cute! I had no idea it's by the same author of another series I'm currently reading, so that was a nice surprise. The art in this series is so beautiful, and the plot is so wholesome. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this!

Super sweet series. I enjoyed it. Its all very slice-of-life so there wasn't much of a plot, which is fine, but it would've been boring if I wasn't so in love with the fmc.
