Buried in the catacombs beneath the fortress of Landmoor lies the Silverkin, an ancient talisman that can overcome any Forbidden Magic. Thealos Quickfellow has the right to claim the Silverkin but knows little about the deadly consequences befalling those who wield it. Before he can lay claim to it however, he must first slip beyond the web of Sorian who have beset Landmoor and battle amongst themselves for supremacy. On his journey Thealos will learn personally of the sacrifices required to become a Sleepwalker and how to use the Silverkin to save his people. But will using it destroy him?
Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler took an early retirement from his career at Intel in 2014 to write full-time. He is a husband, father of five, and a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Jeff lives in the Rocky Mountains.
I thought I had read Landmoor, but as it turns out, I didn't - that made reading Silverkin first a bit harder to understand. There are two or three characters that the story goes back and forth with. I don't usually like a story that does this because I lose my focus and get out of the flow of the story - but the way Jeff Wheeler does it is smooth and seamless.
The Silverkin is a great powerful crystal that can destroy the enemies of those who desire right and good in the land. Only one family is able to wield the crystal's power, and even then, that person is likely to die because it is so great. Theolos Quicksilver is the man who is going to re-find the Silverkin and if need be, use it. Many of the players from book one are back again and working with Theo and Exeres to bring about the destruction of the Sorian. It is full of adventure and suspense, and even a little bit of romance.
I was not impressed with the overuse of the word "ban". I suppose it is a cuss word in the language of the people, but it wasn't always used like a cuss word - but it was used all the time! Got old. I felt like I was reading a cuss word, and I don't read stories with cussing in them! That would be the negative that keeps me from saying this is a clean read.
This is the last of the series from Jeff Wheeler that I have read. So I had a lot of expectations going in. It was different than the other series I’ve read from Mr. Wheeler, it was a little complex in the characters and relationships and I felt that I had a hard time understanding how they all intertwined and what the relationships were. There was just too much to keep track of. Having said that - I definitely enjoyed reading about Thealos and his adventure, and enjoyed the main characters around him. As always I loved the magic and mystery. I hope Wheeler does continue this series as he noted he would in the Afterword.
Nice ending to a very rocky start. There are still plot threads dangling at the end so hopefully these will be tied up in future installments, should they happen. On its own, the book is interesting, somewhat fast paced in developing its story. The characters are believable, though sometimes it seems some actions or events are perfectly timed to serve the story rather than flowing naturally. Religious symbols abound, but in a much subtler way than, say, Muirwood. Still, there are hints and nods to the 'greater universe', Muirwood, Mirrowen, but especially Kingfountain. Out of all the other books, this one best resembles Kingfountain, in the sense that the religious symbols are somewhat subtler and allow a more 'fantasy' setting to bloom. And it blooms quite nicely. Still don't know what the Shae really are, if their ears are pointy or not 😉
My beef, as well as my own fault. Nowhere obvious was it really stated you needed to read Landmoor first to get a decent grasp of everything and not miss out on relevant information. I wrongfully assumed that the books where just set in same world but standalones (which was why I decided to add them to my library list on audible) and perhaps with easter eggs between each other. So yeah I just picked the first and best one to listen to while gaming. >_>; I might give it a relisten after I have listened to Landmoor. But that won't soon.
That said, I personally didn't find the story too difficult to follow, but there was times where I thought hmmm something feels like it's missing. I found out after I was done why I had that feeling. >_>;
I liked this book more than Landmoor, probably because it went right into plot without all the scene setting of the first book. I was able to read it faster and it kept my attention better. I'm a fan of Wheeler's books, but I had not read some of the earlier series and I am making my way through them now. I do hope he returns to this world and these characters at some point as he promises in the author's note because I would like to know what happens next. He's written a lot of series since this one though, so it might be backburnered more permanently, but I hope not. I definitely feel his writing has grown since this series, but I definitely still enjoyed it.
Jeff Wheeler, I have sacrificed countless hours of sleep for your books! I have no regrets since I have found priceless comfort in your words. So many times I've recognised issues I have grappled with, finding wisdom in his to either resolve the issue or accept the lessons. I highly recommend all your books for the adventures, the beautifully written descriptions of the worlds where your amazing characters live. Looking forward to more!
Banned it Jeff! For Hates sake 😂, it’s hard to loose your fam before all ends are tied and bowed. Sooo many questions opened until the muse strikes you again but so looking forward to it. Great read from Landmor through Silverkin. Highly recommendable read that pulls you in and reeks havoc on your emotions. Be ready to roll your eyes, shout at stupidity, cry for the loss of innocence and forbidden love.
I liked this sequel to the first book. I must admit I frequently skipped through fight descriptions as there is a lot of that in this book (as well as the first book!). There are only so many amazingly uneven fights that the main character can magically win. But I love the twists and turns and how the main character is frequently thwarted and has to keep trying. Makes the story riveting!
Well, that book happened. A lot of the twisting and turning lead to more twisting and turning. Some rather obvious character growth (definitely not of the subtle kind) and overall the plot hit you like a punch to the face.
More annoying was the hints at things to come, and the promises of more stories from this world... and then nada. I feel like the more interesting stories were promised at than what I just read.
DNF. But, I think this was a bit of my issue rather than the book. I usually really like this author, but for some reason I just could not get into this story. Granted, I only listened to the Audible version and did not read it, but I could not keep the characters straight and was just really lost. Granted, I had just finished blowing through a 19 book series that was rather intense, so there is that....
Sincerely, Jeff Wheeler needs to come back to this and continue. I had hesitated to buy Landmoor and Silverkin because of complaints about it being unfinished. Wow! What an amazing world and host of characters, as well as wonderful writing. While it is intended to have more in the series, it doesn"t have a huge cliff hanger but does hint at possible future storylines. Please Jeff, bring us more in this amazing epic!
Don’t do what I’ve just done, read this and then realise that this is book #2 - doh! I kind of felt that there was a good back story- I guess there is.
Enjoyed this and found the presence of ‘Ever root’ rather tantalising as is the place it was stored (partly geographical, partly physical). Whether that means anything will depend on the sequence you read Mr Maxwells books and which books you read - personally I suggest you read them all.
Great sequel to Landmoor but I want more!!! This story completed the circle but left the opening for a final resolution to the readers unanswered questions. What of Thealos and Stasy? Does Exeres. Make his final journey to Safe Home? Does the queen's younger sister take up where Thealos left off? Hey Jeff Wheeler, this next book is a long time coming, how about revisiting with a final book for all of us ? Great adventure, please lead us on another one!
There are no real lulls in this Jeff Wheeler creation. It never ceases to amaze me how prolifically he writes such quality tales, and this is no exception. Completely entertaining and though the format is typical of the genre it is not obvious and it has the vitality of an original. Without a doubt in my mind he is among the best of the best of current fantasy writers.
Every time I read anything by Jeff Wheeler and I read a lot of his stories, most of his series now. Every time I read one of his stories, I’m either intensely pleased or extremely pleased and that’s it. He’s a wonderful writer and crafts a wonderful story, and he has given me untold hours of enjoyment. Thank you Jeff Wheeler. May you be compelled to write new stories for a long time.
I loved this book. The characters, settings, and emotional ties were so well done. Jeff Wheelers writings remind me of the classic fantasy that made me love the genre so many years ago. He doesn't use profanity or vulgarity to capture readers. Instead, he uses his skill as a writer and all the resources from his own studies. In my opinion, he is the best fantasy writer at the present time.
Some really enjoyable thought-provoking statements for living life better than we naturally tend to do. I'm really amazed at the depth of character development. The foreshadowing is very well-done too. But the story really is a beautiful take that carries the day!
I have fallen in love with Jeff Wheeler's writing. He makes it appear effortless, which is the sign of someone who is an expert at their craft. Full of interesting well rounded characters, an well wrought plot. What more could you want? I thoroughly recommend this book.
Yes, gripping. The characters tug at your heart and yes, even the villains. I cheered for the heroes to finish their quest. I was frustrated when the evil that was planned hurt the ones I'd come to love. What will become of the sweet love developing? It is a convoluted web of storyline and I will have to wait for the continuation of it.
It took a minute for me to get invested in this story but once I did I want more of it. A lot of adventure and excitement... Hope to read more of this world in the future. Any world written by Jeff Wheeler is one I want to visit as often as possible. I get so involved that I feel like I have been there myself ?
Could not get into the story on my second try. Two many players, factions, places, and magics with no introduction or anything relatable before anything forms in a semblance of a plot. I even did a quick research looking for a prequel to position and identify everything.
I loved the various stories of the characters and how they are woven together! I have read a lot of fantasy and this one referring to historical information wound through the story makes it believable. I love the main characters and can't wait to learn more about them.
Another clever masterpiece by Jeff Wheeler. The world building here is solid. Plenty of magic and other races and mystery. Elves are depicted as flawed, like all races are, with longings and conflicts among themselves. I'm rooting for the human girl, Ticastasy.
I have enjoyed many Jess Wheeler books and this is one of my favorites. Very exciting with plenty of action! I love how he threes human love relationships within a fantasy that is always about good versus evil. I protest the evil force always appearing in the guise of a woman. I really enjoyed Silverkin.
It seemed to begin in the middle without establishing background, plot and characters sufficiently. It didn't flow well nor was it cohesive. It was confusing and messy. I kept thinking there must have been books ahead of this, but no.
It seems I can't even write a decently worded review, but, I can say I enjoyed this story a lot. The plot, the setting, the characters, modeling fabled people in new ways... elves, dwarfs, magic, gods. Can't wait for the other books promised.
While I did not find the characters as engaging and captivating as his other worlds and story line, I still cannot wait to see and believe this too will change as I move on to the next story for Thealos and the gang. Thanks again Jeff!
