With the chaos of summer tourists and fall birders out of town, counselor Patience Price is looking forward to the quiet life she remembers. She longs for some peace. And an apple fritter. But the calm is cut short when a reality show sets up camp to film a special about ghosts on her little island. Now fans, reporters and crew have flocked to sleepy Chincoteague. Who knew ghost hunters had an entourage?
When two cast members are killed in a room at the local B&B—a room usually occupied by Patience's FBI agent boyfriend, Sebastian—she finds herself on the case. Sebastian doesn't want Patience ruffling any feathers but, as always, she can't help herself. Patience promises to let Sebastian handle the investigation—he is FBI, after all—but after a drive-by shooting, her wicked curiosity gets the best of her. And with the TV show forging ahead with filming, the list of suspects (and the line of food trucks) only grows. But has the shooter already flown the coop? And how do you find a killer when you don't know who the target is?

I am a big fan of mysteries (ever since I was young) and have really taken to this cozy mystery genre. They're fun and playful - and the main characters all seem to have a sweet side to them. They're a great book to just sit around lazily reading on a Sunday - they're easy and "cozy," and keep you reading until the book is finished.
This book is no different. I really like Patience and her best friend, Claire. They are a lot of fun and Patience has that sarcastic quality that I like in a character. Each person we are introduced to that live on this smile little island have a quirky air to them and the author lets you learn about them through their interactions with each other instead of a massive info dump that a lot of people do. The mystery is interesting and kept me flipping the pages until the end, wanting to know who was doing this and why. I also really liked the way the author tells the story. She's creative with it and I felt like I was one of the islanders through most of the story.
I have not read the first two in this series, so there were a few things (like when they discuss the couple of weeks before this book begins, the uncomfortable and not always nice between the two main male characters) that left me a little confused, but I was quickly pulled into this mystery and don't feel like I missed out on anything. (She has intrigued me, though, so I plan to go back and read the first two.)
Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. No other consideration was offered, expected or received.
Patience Price has moved back to her island home hoping for a peaceful existence. That life is shattered when a reality show comes to town and two of the cast members are found dead at a local B&B. The owner is Patience’s best guy friend, Adrian, who’s running for political office. How will a couple of murders look on his resume? Patience gets involved in solving the crime, hoping to boot the show’s fandom and a group of ghost hunters off the island. The heat rises with the body count and soon she’s running from the killer’s sight. Can she identify the culprit before more people get hurt? This easy-to-read cozy mystery kept me guessing until the end.
When counselor Patience Price was let go from her Human Resources job with the FBI, she sought refuge in her small, island hometown of Pony Island, Virginia. But going back home has been anything but peaceful for Patience! The previous months have been full of danger, crime, and near-death experiences. At least her deepening relationship with Special Agent Sebastian Clark is a bright spot in her otherwise questionable days. (If only that mob boss weren't hunting him.)
Halloween is approaching as the book begins, and Patience's ex-boyfriend, Adrian, lures a widely popular reality television show to Pony Island to film. Soon the normally laid-back island is bursting at the seams with fans, followers, ghost hunters...and a murderer. Poor Patience tries her best to honor Sebastian's wishes that she stay out of any and all investigations, but her curiosity just can't be quelled and, before she knows it, she's in a killer's crosshairs yet again.
Murder in Real Time is the third and final book in the Patience Price Mysteries series and is a fitting end to the story. Author Julie Anne Lindsey brings the action, intrigue, danger, and romance to a suspenseful crescendo and, ultimately, a hugely satisfying resolution.
In this third book of the revised and re-released series finds summer over and the tourists gone from Pony Island. Patience is looking forward to a peaceful fall, but seriously what are the odds of that? The answer no chance! Why? Because a reality show has been invited to film a special about island ghosts. Not only are there fans, reporters and crew clogging up the sleepy town, two cast members of the show has been murdered. As if the murders aren’t bad enough, the location is even worse, Sebastian’s room at the B and B! Sebastian had been staying on the island to avoid a crime boss so of course Patience wonders if the real target was Sebastian? Although Patience plans to stay out of investigations since she was nearly killed twice before, can she keep her word? Especially considering her partners in crime, Claire and Adrian are huge fans of “The Watchers”, and spend time with cast and crew of the show. Mayhem isn’t far behind thanks to ghost hunters, drive by shooting and cameras everywhere filming everything. Plus Adrian is still running for mayor, Halloween is just around the corner and Claire is spending way too much time with the island sheriff, what else could go wrong? This is the final book of the series and although I’ll miss all the crazy characters, Julie tied up all the loose ends and provided a very happy ending. I agreed to read and honestly review the ebook sent by the author.
I think this one was my favorite in the Patience Price Mysteries. I was kinda sad that this mini series is over but Julie did an excellent job wrapping the series up. I do have a little mixed feelings on who I ultimately wanted Patience with at the end. This series isn't a cozy but a contemporary mystery. It still has cozy elements but a lots and more action and little more on the romance.
This is the 3rd book in the revised & re-released Patience Price series. I enjoy this great series. The characters are colorful and memorable. The long standing family relationships and friendships give it a good foundation. The mix of romance and suspense keeps me interested. I'm so glad to see Patience get a happy ending! I received an ARC from the author for an honest review. Give this one a try!
I am so sad that this is the last in the series. I have loved getting to know Patience, Sebastian, Adrian, and all the others on Pony Island. The mysteries have always been well crafted and I loved the extra, ongoing investigation Sebastian was involved in. All the loose ends were tied up nicely but I’d be so happy to see that this series is going to continue. There’s so much more I need to learn about these fantastic characters.
I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This is book three in a series and I am not sure how I always manage to read these things out of order, but I do.
I was excited to realize that this was by the same author who wrote the Geek Girl’s Guide to Murder series which I really loved. I can see a bit of a correlation between the two series based on how the author built the world. Same family dynamics. I love the whole new age parents aspect. But do not be dismayed each series does stand on its own. It is easy to distinguish one series from another.
Right out of the gate, dead bodies show up in her main beau’s bed. Sebastian Clark is an FBI superstar and he knows all the protocols on how to deal with such disturbances. Thank goodness for guys with special talents, right?
The bodies were of two popular reality television stars. I am not exactly sure how they ended up in the FBI guy’s bed. The house they were renting out belonged to Patience’s other friend, Adrian. The explanation of that aspect did seem a bit convoluted to me but that aspect is completely revealed at the end of the book.
Patience used to be in the human resources department at the FBI but somehow got fired or let go from her position. (Not sure why considering she is such a good worker.) Now she is a counselor working with many people in down. But the funny thing is, they don’t want to meet her in an office. They want their sessions while they are golfing, grocery shopping or just living their every day lives.
Patience spends most of the novel helping her best friend, Adrian run for mayor of their small town. But the appearance of The Watchers reality television series puts the whole city on the map when floods of tourists come to town.
This was a great book. It really kept my interest and I went out and purchased books one and two right away. I love me some Julie Ann Lindsey!
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) from NetGalley in return for an honest review. I thank the publisher, the author and NetGalley for allowing me to read this title.
This book started with a little advantage for me, being set on Chincoteague Island, a place well known to and beloved by all fans of Marguerite Henry and Misty of Chincoteague. All resemblance to that childhood classic ends at the causeway to the mainland, however. Murder, mayhem and a dash of romance kept me fully occupied with never a pony in sight. Because this is Book 3 in the Patience Price series, there were things that confused me, and a lot of references to the chaos that had gripped the Island since Patience's arrival that made me want to go read the other books. I had a little trouble keeping track of all the characters, probably partly because of that history I didn't know.
The mystery is fairly well put together, though I was a bit put off by the ending. I will also say that Ms. Price pushed some buttons with her interference in police business, and still more with her foolhardy behavior on more than one occasion (this pushed my rating from 4 stars down to 3; if these things don't bother you, definitely a 4-star). Those factors did detract from an engaging story that picked up speed as it went along until flying on to the end. Pacing was excellent; behavior of characters was at times inconsistent or unconvincing. Despite that, I found myself rooting for Patience and her friends, and needing to know how the story came out.
Recommendation: This is a cozy mystery that leans on the romance side, with as much of the story about relationships as about crime. I recommend it for those who like books and series where you get deeply involved in the characters' lives, however disfunctional they may at times be. In any case, Patience and her friends do put the "fun" in disfunction, so they are worth the time for a quick romp.
I received a free electronic review copy in exchange for my honest review.
Murder in Real Time is a Patience Price mystery by Julie Anne Lindsey. It is a good book but a little slow in places. There are a lot of things going on at the same time and only one of them is important. You just have to follow the line. Patience Price only wanted to live on Chincoteague in peace. She wanted a quiet little counseling practice, a nice place to live, and friends around for company. One friend in particular, Sebastian Clark would definitely be welcomed but she wasn’t sure if he would ever give up his life as an FBI agent for her island. Now that the tourists were leaving, the island could get back to the quiet she loved. However, the mayor had put some things into effect which would change things drastically. He saw a chance to help the island make money and took it. He and Adrian, mayoral candidate and ex-boyfriend of Patience’s, had brought The Watchers to the island. This was a reality show and their idea was to create a creepy show for Halloween. It would cumulate with a huge Halloween party on Halloween. Meanwhile, they rented Adrian’s house which was said (by Adrian) to be haunted. Ghost hunters and fans of the show moved in and took over the island. As if this wasn’t enough, two stars from the show were found shot to death in a room rented to the producer Rick Fitzgerald. It seems the land lady had rented out Sebastian’s room since he wasn’t using it. Rick had the beautiful Anna Copeland visit him one night and someone shot them. How he got in the room was unknown. Patience does her best to stay out of the investigation. Her friends Adrian and Claire keep her informed of what is going on and pull her into the investigation against her will. Can she stay out of the way of Sebastian and his FBI friends?
I was equal parts excited to read Murder in Real Time and sad that this was the last Patience Price mystery. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on Pony Island. The characters and setting truly make this series wonderful. I absolutely love the way Julie is able to balance mystery, humor, and romance in her books, and this series is no exception.
The Patience Price mysteries are not cozy mysteries at all, though they do have an amateur sleuth and a quirky, cozy town. There is romance and more on-page violence than you would find in a cozy. This is more of what I would consider a contemporary mystery with romantic elements.
Patience finds herself embroiled in yet another set of murders on Pony Island. Her curiosity gets the best of her, even when trying to heed Sebastian's plea to stay out of it. Two reality stars are killed in Sebastian's hotel room - too big of a coincidence for Patience to let go, especially since Jimmy the Judge is still on the loose needing revenge on Sebastian. When the danger comes at Patience - and Adrian and Claire because of their association with her - she knows she can't just let this one go.
I really like Patience and her parents are a hoot! This was a fitting end to the series - I loved how Julie wrapped it all up. Though I still am Team Adrian! I'm a sucker for second chance/childhood love rekindled. I would love a bonus epilogue or novella to give me just a little more of what happens now. I definitely will hold these characters and Pony Island near and dear to my heart.
If you are looking for a mystery with light romance and lots of laughs, I highly recommend this whole series.
I received an ARC of this book and also borrowed it on Kindle Unlimited. I am voluntarily sharing my honest review of this book and am not influenced in any way.
Counselor Patience Price hopes she can settle into a calm routine after several months of chaos on her normally peaceful island. It helps that her boyfriend, FBI Special Agent Sebastian Clark has moved to the island to be with her and to avoid a mobster bent on revenge. Then the mayor invites a reality show to film on the island, and they rent the home of Patience’s first love (now friend) for filming. With housing in short supply, Sebastian gives first-love Adrian the keys to the B&B room, where Adrian discovers the bodies of two of the show’s stars. Among the issues to sort out is who the target really was. Did someone mean to kill the celebrities, or was Sebastian the real target? How can Patience help without putting herself in danger or driving Sebastian completely over the edge? And how can she help Adrian win his race for mayor? There’s a lot going on on the island, and to top it off, someone is stalking Patience. Once again, the author has written a wonderful community in a well-described setting. The characters are likable and perfectly imperfect. There’s a lot of love and humor written in. This is the third in a three-book series, each of which left me smiling.
I read MURDER BY THE SEASIDE (Book #1) and MURDER IN REAL TIME (#3) back to back after reading two other of Julie Anne Lindsey (aka Julie Chase) cozy mystery Romances. I love the cozy settings on all of her series! I wanted to live in all of her settings, especially on this East Coast Southern island, Chincoteague. I loved the island community, the main character--Patience Price, and all of her friends, and even her parents. Reading these books in 2020 (enough said) put the comfort in the cozy reads.
And the humor! The tension and suspense and mystery is real. But the author's uptick, upbeat humor breaks it enough to keep the story...cozy. (Sorry, can't repeat that vibe enough.) For extra comfort, bring your favorite food to pig out with Patience while reading.
*I bought Julie Anne Lindsey's books for these reviews.
This is the third in the series. I really will miss Patience, Sebastian, Adrian and the rest of the crew. I really would like to know what happens between Claire and Fargas. Maybe we’ll see a book down the road that could be 5 years into the future from where this one ends. I would rush out to get it.
This was a twisted mystery beginning with the death of the couple at the B & B. Then as Adrian’s & Claire’s investigation progresses it interferes with Deputy Fargas & Sebastian’s investigation. There is more going on then the amateurs currently know.
I don’t want to give anything away – it’s too good to spoil it for all you potential readers. I was given a copy of this book and am not required to leave a positive review but I had to do it.
The final book in the Patience Price series does not disappoint. I was anxious to see what mischief Patience and her friends would get into as well as how the love triangle would pan out. The book is full of mystery, romance and quick witted humor! The ending was definitely exciting and I couldn't put the book down. I love the way the author tied up all the loose ends with the characters at the end. I am sad to say goodbye to Patience and all the quirky folks from her island hometown, but I love how everything panned out.
Wow what a read. This was an awesome read that moves along at a pace which makes for a relaxing and enjoyable read. The characters are awesome and you feel as though you know them personally and no matter what happens you cant help but love them. This story will grab you and keep you interested and reading until the end. It is a must read that needs to be on your TBR list, you will not be sorry that you did.
If you are looking for a great culmination to the Price series written by Julie Anne Lindsey, then Murder in Real Time is the book for you. The threads that tied the characters together made for an interesting read. I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Patience, Sebastian, and Adrian. But I have so many questions as to what happens next for these fascinating characters. Please Ms. Lindsey, write another installment in the series. I will be eagerly awaiting the answers!
It’s been an amazing journey watching Patience grow over the course of three books and all I can say is that I want an update on what’s happening on Pony Island these days! Surely after their HEA Patience and Sebastian, Max and Claire and Adrian continued to act like the Scooby gang and find secret tunnels and all sorts of mischief. Take the time and get to know these people. It’s worth the time!
This final installment was the best of the series! I love how the author wrapped up all the storylines that took place in the first two books. I really wish there were more books because I love Patience, her parents, Sebastian, Adrian & everyone else. Especially love Patience's counselling on the side!
This gave me the closure I needed even though I wish the series would go on for a little longer. I really like Patience and her friends. I like all the trouble she gets into and the mysteries they would solve. I will re read this series in the future. I enjoyed the character development and especially the scenery.
I really enjoyed staying up way past my bedtime reading this mystery-romance. The characters felt real, the dialogue sounded authentic, and the action moved quickly. I especially enjoyed this playful look at a modern family and humorous reflections on our foibles and contradictions.
Hollywood comes to the island of Chincoteague. And with it comes death. Can the hometown sleuth figure out what is going on before someone she loves is in danger? Full of action, this is a great summer (or Autumn) read.
What a sweet, wonderful and action packed final book! I adore Patience and she tried so so hard to be so good in this book! There is just so much happening on the island! I adore coming to Pony island and am sad to leave it now. I also totally cried at the ending!!! Awwww
Read this in record time. Probably the best in the three I’ve read. A nice few twists in the plot and a twist to the ending scene. I recommend this, but it’s better if you read books 1 and 2 first. It stands alone but better that way.
I loved that I feel like I’m there! This really gave me the whole experience because I got to enjoy the setting while trying to figure out who did it! Figuring this one out when everyone is in the limelight was tough!! I loved every minute of it!
This book is the conclusion to the three-book series that takes place on a fictitious small island populated by colorful characters. Set just before Halloween, the plot involves a reality TV show, ghost hunters, shootings, and a mob of fans. The book was enjoyable and often humorous.
It was sad to see the end of this series. However I think the author ended it perfectly. Also this was probably the best one of the series. I still want to know about the cupcakes...
