Fun paranormal urban fantasy vibes. Vampire and a Witch plus a mystery to solve.

Things I loved: Witches, Vampires, Magic, lovable characters, scary monsters, Mystery and ability to talk to birds. Def a fun adventure with cool characters and an interesting magic system / lore.

Things I struggled with: Romance felt SUPER rushed. Went from nothing to sex to "Well we're perfect for each other" to "Duh we're mates" so fast I got whiplash. As such, despite loving the characters I didn't really believe in the lasting power of this relationship. I wanted a bit more in that aspect.

Gave this 4 stars because it's pitched as paranormal romance and compared to popular paranormal romance. But I found the romance aspect lacking.

The Owl's Crown is an action-packed paranormal adventure that I greatly enjoyed! The world-building was fantastic and I loved learning about the magic beings and how they survived in the real world right alongside humans.

The romance was fun and spicy, but I wouldn't say it was the main focus of the book. There was plenty more going on besides that and there was plenty of action to keep me engaged.

Overall this was a very entertaining read and I look forward to checking out the next book in the series!

Exciting, full of mystery amid a fascinating world

Wow, this was such a fun ride!

I didn’t really know what to expect but it was highly recommended from my friends. After reading it, I will be doing the same!

I love a rich magic system and this book is chock full of it. Some of it we’re introduced to right away. Others, we uncover with the characters, and sone of it we’re still left wondering on. But it’s without sacrificing the feeling of conclusion.

The author takes familiar tropes and gives them her own spin but without eliminating the elements that make them attractive in the first place. It’s a difficult balance to achieve but I think the author tackles it well.

The characters are lovely people to follow and I found their banter adorable. Seeing them tip tap around one another was great development!

Will definitely look forward to other adventures with this author!

Wow, this was incredibly enjoyable! A memorable urban fantasy set in the PNW, it largely centers around the two characters on the cover, Evie, the witch who's become the Owl King which is as cool as it sounds, and Lawrence the vampire, whose powers harken back to the good old vampire movies and lore. I loved it, and the setting, and the owls... On to book two.

With an intriguing line like that I knew I just had to read this and it was fantastic! It a fun read with awesome world building and amazing characters and is full of action, romance, magic and danger.
Lawrence and Evie are such great characters and come together really well as they embark on their journey to save the world.

A quirky story with lovable characters on a unique adventure. From a long line of very powerful witches, Evie is not. Very powerful, that is. She’s not great at magic at all. Lawrence is a loner vampire with emotional baggage following a bitter break up. He prefers his quiet life as a funeral director, his only friends being the 3 women that work with him and the characters of his favorite classic movies.
They don’t know each other, they don’t really know where they’re going, they certainly don’t know what they’re in for on this adventure. We learn as they do. We get to know the characters as they get to know each other. This is also how we learn some of the history of the Owl King and the history of vampires and other nonhuman creatures.
Lawrence and Evie slowly start to trust and care for each other. Their magical and emotional bonds strengthening them in their fight against an unknown enemy.
What we learn about the Owl King is intriguing but I am really hoping there will be a lot more in upcoming stories. I love Evie and her owls, and Lawrence with his somewhat old fashioned clothes and movies. I love the romantic story of the first Owl King. I’m really looking forward to the next book. This was a fantastic introduction to what I imagine will be a fun and enchanting series.
Full disclosure, I got a free ARC of this book but my review is completely honest and voluntary.

A fun, paranormal adventure

I really enjoyed this modern day, dorky vampire mortician gets magically stuck with a free-spirited witch story. Their journey is epic and full of action, as well as a little spice. Less romance and more paranormal adventure, I still enjoyed the fated mate concept that the author seemed to be foretelling and look forward to watching the pair’s relationship develop in the next books. Definite recommend.

The Owl's Crown is written in such a way that it creates a world within a world. I loved learning all about the magical realm that the author built on top of a world that we think we already understand. The way the characters are brought together is quite interesting and unique. I enjoyed the progression of the relationship. Although, some parts of it felt a bit rushed.

The conflict of the story is introduced in such a way that keeps the reader guessing about what's actually going on and what every piece of new information is leading to. I really liked how the author left the reader to draw their own conclusions without telling the reader what to think at every turn.

I'm excited to read the next book and see where it takes our main characters!

To be truthfully honest, when this book popped up on my list of ARCs; I was not so keen on reading it. Since it was something I would normally not read. However I am so happy I gave it a chance. I loved every bit of it. It was so refreshing and different from what I normally read. I enjoyed how clean it was and that it was more about the plot and characters than it was about the “smut” aspect that most books tend to lean towards these days. I love to see a male MC that is understanding, communicative, devoted, and patient nothing like the typically “alphaholes,” well not when he has to protect his mate.

Lawrence lives a quiet life as a mortician. He loves his job and enjoys watching movies on his laptop. His life is uneventful, the only interaction he has is with his three female friends/co-workers (an older female human and a pair of fay twins). That is until he receives the mark of the Owl King and he must report for his duties as the King’s scribe.

Evie is the new owl king following the passing of her mother. She is meant to be a great witch with powerful magic that is passed through generations. But, she struggles with her craft, it didn’t come so easily to her. But when she receives a letter from her supposedly dead father and a notice about receiving a scribe. Evie takes on for a journey with a vampire of all creatures by her side. Vampires and witches were not known to be friends.

These two embark into a journey filled with magic, danger, adventure and action. I love that the plot was constantly full of action and challenges for the characters. A face pace plot but with such a slow burn of tension and attraction; with secret glimpses at one another. Lawrence and Evie are connected far beyond the mark of the owl king, when their shadows touch they become intertwined, almost as one.

I loved learning or reading the names of new supernatural creatures outside those we normally see such as; vampires, witches, wolves, etc. The author has such an amazing skill of writing in detail without dragging it out. There is no cliffhanger but I know the story doesn’t end there, I can not wait for the next book.

The Owl's Crown

HERO /HEROINE

Lawrence is a vampire mortician living in Portland. He owns an old home and has three employees that he considers family. He is kind of a loner for a vampire. Instead of living out in the wild like most if his kind does, he lives in a bustling city. He loves watching movies, TV shows and drinking coffee.

Evie is a witch and a descendant of the Owl King Jannis. Her mother was the last Owl King and upon her death, Evie was then given the title. Evie isn't a particularly gifted witch. She is clumsy usually but has found her way around basic witch spells and improvises where she must. She can talk to birds and grow plants from the earth.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

You would think this book would have been cool. I wished it was. I was bored. I kept falling asleep. It was wordy and the book felt so much longer than it was.

I really liked Lawrence and I wished the author spent more time with him and his personality. The first chapter at the funeral home was promising. I liked Bea and the fae sisters. But he teams up with Evie for most of the book and I honestly would have loved this if they were a better couple together. Their conversations are stunted and awkward, which is fine. But the author does not show us bonding moments between them.

Evie was very standoffish at first and then all of a sudden we get one chapter where she is very welcoming and kind to Lawrence. Then another chapter and they're having sex? And not even the good explicit sex, the author wrote a fade to black scene. 🙃

I was bamboozled by all the good reviews. I'm literally yawning as I write this. I had planned to read the entire series but I just can't do it.

Vampires, Witches, Adventure, Romance, Bossy Owls? Yes Please!

Evie is the Owl King, which is a title that is not only inherited, but comes with responsibilities. Lawrence is a vampire that loves old movies and owns a mortuary in Portland. Usually these two worlds would not even come in to each other's purview, except for of course the Owl King is in need of a new Scribe and the above mentioned bossy Owls have decided that Lawrence is it.

The first book of the Owl King series follows both Evie and Lawrence as they go from strangers, to acquaintances, to friends, to lovers, all while trying to figure out what is sending all the non-humans into hiding and the cryptic words of an absentee father. And I loved it!

This is definitely considered a paranormal romance with a side of adventure and was written in such a way that I had a hard time putting it down once I started reading it. It was fast paced enough that it kept me interested. Sometimes, I do think that there could have been a bit longer scenes when it came to dealing with some issues and in some areas it did feel rushed , but definitely not anything that would lose readability over.

I would recommend this to anyone that is interested in a good story where the characters are not all powerful, and have flaws that they must overcome while still trying to do the right thing.

The Owl's Crown by L.B. Black is an action packed magical adventure. The story begins in rainy Portland in a funeral home run by a quiet vampire named Lawrence. Lawrence's life is one of solitude and routine until the arrival of a mysterious floating letter. Next thing he knows he is bound to a witch whose life is anything but routine.

Evie is a young witch who recently inherits the title of Owl King after the sudden death of her mother. Although she's spent her childhood learning from her mother, nothing has prepared her for the sudden adventure she's called to after the arrival of two letters. Evie is not the best at her craft but when she gets a letter from her long deceased father she cannot ignore the call for help.

After a brief meeting the vampire and witch try to part ways but the owls have more to say about that. Soon these two find themselves locked on a dangerous quest. Will these two loners learn to work together and trust one another long enough to keep disaster from happening?

The Owl Crown was a fun, fast paced read. This was the first book in a series that will have you quickly reaching for the next installment. I would recommend the Owl Crown to people who love a good urban fantasy full of danger and adventure.

From the moment I began the book I could not put it down. It’s one of those stories that grasps your attention and you just have to find out what happens. It was such an enjoyable read. I loved the way the characters were described and developed. I felt a true connection to both Evie and Lawrence. I enjoyed the way the chapters flipped back and forth between each of their perspectives.

This story had action, adventure, wit and romance all my favourite things. I am itching to get back into this universe and read more of these characters.

I liked the authors take on vampires and witches. It was different and yet felt normal, like how all stories should be.

Evie is a strong female character. Feeling like she had to go the road alone and deal with her responsibilities. She has trust issues which translate into her feeling she needs to be strong always. To see the friendship grow between her and Lawrence was beautiful. You begin to see Evie learning to trust it’s beautiful. I would definitely recommend reading.

The Owl's crown is an intriguing story. A vampire and a witch who don't know each other meet under mysterious circumstances. They both receive cryptic letters which lead to seeking out answers.

Lawrence is a vampire who lives a quiet life as a mortician. Evie is a witch with little experience. He likes old movies and his job, but when he receives a cryptic letter about being a scribe, he sets out to find out why. Especially now that he is sporting a tattoo that came out of nowhere. When he meets Evie, she is not very trusting and is weary of his vampiric nature. It turns out that he saves her life and they end up travelling together on a bizarre quest. Will she learn to trust him?

Lawrence and Evie are loving and lovable characters. The storyline is unusual in its own way and is beautifully portrayed. Their interactions are fascinating and I love the owls. They bring an interesting concept to the story. It's a satisfactory end, but there is more to come. As a bonus, there is no cliffhanger.

I received an eARC from BookSirens and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

This was really fun! The characters and concept felt fresh - the integration of lore, world building and narrative worked really well and was very readable. Is it the best thing I’ve read? No, but I thoroughly enjoyed it anyway.

My favourite element was Lawrence’s character. He is a change from the alpha or broody MMCs we often see in urban fantasy and I loved the idea that he had found his style somewhere in the 60s and then just muddled through until it came around again. I found myself gunning for him and he was both believable and charming - a winning combination!

Lawrence and Evie had a great dynamic; I would have liked to see a little more battling with their attraction to each other to develop it more fully, but it still worked.

My major critique is with the pacing. It felt like there was a lot of build up with little payoff. Some parts felt rushed, which impacted the effect and significance to the plot, for me at least. Still, this series has so much potential and I’m excited to see where it goes.

Review: This book was so much fun and I didn’t want to end! I love evie as a main character she was great and I loved Lawrence as a love interest! Lawrence was so sweet and caring! However, my issue was the romance it felt a little too rushed and I wanted some more development! I wanted to see them get to know one another more before things started to heat up between the two of them! Besides that! I had so much fun reading this action packed adventure! I could see it as a movie or a tv series!

A vampire with a different lifestyle and a witch with a serious responsibility on her shoulders make an attractive, strong and intriguing couple in this story full of action, suspense, adventure, magic, danger and supernatural beings. The magic between Evie and Lawrence seemed different and mysterious to me, leading them to a strong attraction that made them complement each other and strengthened them. This was new to me. I liked the development of the plot full of challenges and dangerous situations that reveal a powerful threat that looms over everyone. I was struck by the way that Evie and Lawrence, a witch and a vampire, constantly had to figure out how to survive. The descriptions kept me alert and expectant. The story doesn't end with a cliffhanger, but it does let us know that things don't end there so I look forward to the next book.

"but anyone can become a monster when they are so overwhelmed by horror that they can no longer remember beauty."

"The thing is, you talk to enough monsters and you realize they’re just the same as anybody else. Trying to get by in a world that’s turned against them."

i loved that this book was filled with magic, witches, vampire fantasy elements, left me spell bounded. a story about a witch, who is born in the line of very powerful witches, she meets a vampire and they embark on a journey together. i felt that this book spanned to variety of genres, it was a fun book to read.

"She wondered just how good his eyesight was, but she’d decided it was better to avoid personal questions. Every time he answered one, she wanted to ask another, and after a while, it was like standing in a library full of the most fascinating books and knowing you’d never have time to read them all."

Nice tight little urban fantasy.

Quick read. Love the idea of the Owl KIng!

Interesting take on non-humans, magical beings and humans.

I adored Lawrence and his found family from the start. A vampire funeral director is very fitting :D

Evie and her family's history is a fun and unique take on witchery, great idea!

Suffers from some extraneous wording that should have been caught by an editor, extra 'and's', 'to's' and so forth. Couple of places where a phrase is repeated verbatim. Like the author was playing with placement and the editor didn't see fit to pull the extra out.

Other than those few hiccups, a nice solid entry into an intriguing new series full of fun ideas and new takes on old concepts, with characters you genuinely like and feel for.

I adored this book! It was a lot of fun getting to know the main characters Lawrence and Evie with their quirks and imperfections, and I loved the way their relationship progressed throughout the book. You're left wanting to read more about what their next adventure would be like by the end of the book. The entire plot was also full of adventure and mystery with a generous side of humour, and I found myself chuckling at the characters' thoughts and dialogue more than a few times. I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait for book 2 (hopefully it'll be available for purchase in epub format)!

This series is so good and the first book is the best! While both MC are powerful in their own way I love how they feed off of each other and are stronger together than they can be separated. Also has fated mates trope which is my weakness.

The story follows the Owl King who has recently inherited her title, after her mother passed away from a fire. Her companion is her scribe, which we don't actually get a good definition for in this book. Nevertheless the chemistry of friendship is almost immediate with these two and made me love them quickly.

The banter, the self doubt, and the budding romance was enough to keep me interested throughout and I loved every minute of it. I read this quickly, as it's not super long. Good thing because I was ready immediately to get to the next book!

This book it's amazing and it's impossible to put down.
From the very first word until the last one, you always want to know mora and more about these characters.
Lawrence, the vampire, and Evie, the witch, are meant to be together and you can sense that from their first encounter. And then the author show us the development of their relationship and it's perfect.
The "bad guys" are very interesting and I wanted to know more about them. Also the secundary characters seem ver rich and I'd like to see more of them.
Highly recommended and can't wait to dive more in this universe.

I really enjoyed this first book in the Owl King Archives!
Lawrence and Evie are great main characters; easy to relate to and their relationship progression throughout the book felt natural and authentic. The story had a great level of tension and pacing.
I’d have loved to read a bit more about their lives before events really kicked up a gear - Lawrence and his team, Evie and her interactions with the owls, but I hope there’s room to expand on this in the next books.
There were a couple of spellcheck misses but this was an easy read and very enjoyable.

Ok this was a pretty good book. I didn't really know what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked it. The ending wasn't so much as a surprise as it was unexpected. It ended on a satisfying note while still setting up the sequel. The characters were well written, and while they did fall into some typical stereotypes they were still enjoyable to read. This is a really solid book to read when you are trying to get over a reading slump or have just finished a really heart-pounding book (like SJ Mass). There are a few annoying grammatical errors and typos, but not too many. Overall this is a really solid and easy read.

Owl's Crown is a fast-paced, supernatural romance with the fated/bound mate trope and I loved every second of it! It had lost of action, magic, tension, and just the right amount of spice! You have Evie, who's a witch and Lawrence, a vampire who are destined to meet with crazy circumstances. They're then led on to a wild chase of events through out the book. I loved Evie and Lawrence's interactions together and the book is so quotable I highlighted a lot of parts <3

So, if you like all things supernatural and want something fast-paced with some romance - definitely pick this one up!

This was a super cute & fun book! A YA mystery/whodunnit with a burgeoning romance. Witches, vampires, fae, and other supernatural creatures make this a fun and enticing read!

Evie and Lawrence become bound, seemingly out of nowhere and they each want nothing more than to not have to deal with the other. Evie’s a witch, and the Owl King, and Lawrence is a vampire….and apparently now the scribe to the Owl King. Forces greater than them are at work to bring them together so that they may defeat a greater evil, because it knows they’re strongest together.

The two main characters are very likeable. A slow recognition of each others potential and ensuing trust makes for an interesting, engaging story. Adventure, mystery, paranormal romance, it spans many genres.
There are occasional spellchecker errors- and my pet peeve - disretely instead of discreetly. Please!!! - one means seperately and one means on the quiet. However because I did love the story I have not taken a star off as I would usually do.

This was a fun, quick read. Lawrence was everything I wanted him to be. I loved the introduction we got to his life and the glimpses of his past we were afforded throughout the story. Evie took me a little longer to warm up to. She was cagey and defensive, but she had her reasons. Watching them learn to trust each other was wonderful.
The plot kept me reading for sure. I wanted to know, with every page, what was going to happen next. I thoroughly enjoyed the magic--especially with the shadows. I can't wait to see what happens next!

I really enjoyed the story. A witch and a vampire put together by owls. The witch Evie being The Owl King and the vampire Lawrence as her scribe, who owns a mortuary are set in a story to save mankind. Together they drive around the Pacific northwest in Evie's motor home which on the outside is normal but astounds Lawrence because the inside is bigger. They search for clues along with trying to find why they were brough together and why the things affect them.

The story flows quite nicely and a I found a joy to read. I am looking forward to reading the next book.
