I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy is my genre of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of fantasy heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy novels.

Fantasy provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!

In Darkblade Savior, the fourth book in Andy Peloquin’s Hero of Darkness series, the Hunter’s journey takes a dramatic turn. Secrets about his past are finally unearthed—his true name, his place in the grand war between gods, and the destiny he’s been moving toward all along. He faces not only ruthless enemies but also long-buried truths, leading to a confrontation that will decide the fate of thousands trapped in the Pit.

This was an absolutely phenomenal continuation of the series. The blend of fast-paced action, emotional weight, and mythic revelations had me glued to the pages. The Hunter’s growth—from feared killer to reluctant hero to true savior—was beautifully done, and his reunion with his wife hit hard on an emotional level. I also really enjoyed the new characters introduced, especially those he encounters on his journey to the Lost City—they added fresh dynamics and surprising depth to the story, while fitting seamlessly into the world we’ve come to know. The worldbuilding was as rich as ever, the stakes were sky-high, and the final battles were as brutal as they were satisfying.

If you’ve followed the Hunter’s story this far, this book delivers on every front—and leaves you eager for the next step in his saga.

The race is on and the Hunter wants to arrive in Enarium before the Sage, thus he has to traverse the Empty Mountains in search of the Lost City with Hailen in tow and the track is treacherous. There were a number of reasons why they traveled to Enarium one of which was to seek the cure to stop Hailen from losing his mind to the Irrsinnon and the clock was ticking for him, he also went in search of the woman who kept calling him North, and he wanted to kill the Sage before he unleashed his crazy plan of releasing the Devourer of Worlds, so he had to arrive before the Withering took place. Turns out that Halien was Meleccha and the sage would need his blood to release Kharna but he also had the power to save the world by binding Kharna forever. Sir Danna and many Cambionari were set on the Hunter’s trail and they were making his track even more difficult but with Sir Danna he met Kiara once again and she owed him her life. Once in Enarium many things happened and amidst the beauty and awesomeness of the Serenii architecture the Hunter discovered horror in the Pit where humans were used as slaves and lived in the most horrendous of conditions if one could call that squalor living. I am a sucker for a revolution so this massive book, with all its heart stopping moments, really did it for me as the Hunter gave his rousing speech to the thousands of humans enslaved in the pit promising them freedom and thus gaining an army to assault the Elivasti and get to the target, the Sage and the final battle is all we had been waiting for and more. I cannot emphasize enough how much I love this assassin, this series and this awesome book! With every book I read I feel the series cannot get any better, but it just does.

Idk I'm conflicted, I'm 75% of the way thru but I'm struggling to find the motivation to continue this book and series because the main character has suddenly become the type of character I loathe. When Part 2 started he just suddenly became very bull-headed and reckless, and worse he became an idealist and optimist that's such a contrast to the the Hunter I've come to know these last few books. He had always been pragmatic and cautious (except those times he was overcome by emotion) so seeing this obstinate, optimist spouting corny shit about standing up for a better future, breaking the chains, fighting for freedom, and doing what's right I was like who is this guy?? He's always been stubborn but he's also been open to logic and changing his opinion when evidence provides validity to that change but he's never been stupidly pigheaded, at least I never perceived him to be until this weird change that has come over him. It's like he's a completely different person and I hate it.

UPDATE
So I managed to finish the book and though I'm still not happy about his development of idealism and optimism over the pragmatism I loved about him, I think I'm gonna continue the series. I'm kinda happy about where the ending left off, especially with Kiara probably going to be a main fixture of the next book, I like her character and her relationship with the Hunter is entertaining. I actually like her more than Taiana and don't hate me but I'm happy about what happened to Taiana. I get that Taiana is his wife and their souls are bound or whatever but they're not the same people they were a millennia ago and I just don't think they fit well together anymore. They might be able to maintain a solid friendship but the love they share isn't the same and it just isn't enough to fix the relationship, with the Hunter's memories of their relationship gone and the fact that they've spent too much time apart and the betrayal that caused a rift, I don't think it can be fully restored. Maybe it's also because we've actually seen the development of the bond between the Hunter and Kiara while we've barely even seen glimpses of the Hunter's relationship with Taiana but I'm just more interested in seeing something develop between the former rather than having something be restored in the latter. Though honestly I wouldn't mind not having any romance at all, it doesn't really matter much to me.

CW: mentions of child abuse/assault, violence, gore, some others

Truth be told, I was putting off continuing this series. Not because it’s bad, just because it can be so dark; I needed to decompress a little. So I did, and now here I am. Sometimes you just need to take a break and enjoy something basic and ridiculous. Then you can go back to enjoying the finer things in life, like an author casually ripping your heart out of your chest and putting it back half a dozen times in one book.

The Sage has escaped Kara-Ket, and the Hunter needs to find him before he can release Kharna. But Hailen’s Irrsinnon is worsening, threatening to claim his life with every passing moment, and finding a lost city isn’t exactly an easy thing. As the Hunter scrambles for solutions, he may find that the answers are nothing like he expected.

This is easily my favorite of the series so far. As always, Peloquin has crafted an immersive story perfectly crafted to send you through joy, despair, rage, and grief hand in hand with the MC. This book particularly seemed to scream, “Welcome! Here’s some second-hand cognitive dissonance. Enjoy!” I was fully unprepared for everything that would happen in this one, and I loved every moment of it. Previous Darkblade books have taken me about a week to get through, just because of how heavy everything can be; the moments between the action in the other books made for perfect pauses in my reading. This one took me 3 days. There was absolutely no time for mundane things like sleep because *had* to know what was going to happen next. Add some glorious characters to the breakneck speed of things and real life just had to wait for a bit. 10/10, you need to read.

I immediately want to jump into the next book, but it’s going to have to wait. The author’s suggested reading order shifts us to the Queen of Thieves series, so that’s where I’m going. Per my husband (who is ridiculously smug about being right regarding my enjoyment of these books), I’m going to love this series even more. I’m not sure I’m prepared for him to be right a second time, but Peloquin’s just too good. If (super) dark fantasy is your thing, you’re going to want to read these books ASAP.

Could there be a more gentle, loving, caring ruthless assassin than the Hunter? What!!!!! you say, contradiction, you say.... well just so you know, it's not! The pain he feels, the loss he experiences are all too real, even with the dagger screaming for blood, he refuses to kill for the sake of killing, he feels the burden of every kill. He refuses to do Soulhunger's bidding, which would bring forth an unprecedented evil. See? A companionate assassin... and such a tortured soul, constantly attempting to keep the voices at bay whilst trying to discover who he really is. Snippets of memory surface but he cannot make sense of them, it keeps eluding him, he knows he has to travel to Enarium, that the answers he needs he'll find there. So starts another perilous journey, together with Hailen, fraught with dangers and obstacles. I've said this previously, there's something about the Hunter that goes beyond tugging at my heartstrings, I want to envelope him in the biggest hug and console him, constantly. He's constantly being hounded and followed by Sir Danna and the Cambionari, no matter how much distance he thinks he between them, they always seem to find him. I loved the introduction of the two guides, one so stoic, the other fun loving, as they traip through the mountains looking for a path to Enarium. Another really interesting character, Evren, who has secrets of his own. Now that's an interesting new character and with a promise of more of him, I'm simply delighted! As the journey continues, the Hunter's situation becomes more and more dire. The guilt he feels, the choices he's made, have him in more agony than ever! He swore he would protect Hailen, he swore he would find his mystery woman yet once he finally gets to Enarium, it all falls apart. I wanted to throw my hands up in despair, my heart pounding dangerously fast, at what the Hunter endures. I breathed a sigh of relief that the Hunter's death count was, for him, relatively low, that is until the final third of the book. True to who and what he is, the body count sure pilled up massively! And the twists! OMG! I was agog! Just when I thought everything was falling into place for the Hunter, Andy pulled the rug from under me! By the end of this book, there's a sliver of hope from the Hunter, which I can't help but be elated. After learning the truth, what his purpose really is, the Hunter's new founded purpose and resolve are simply mouthwatering for more of this amazingly superb series. There is so much more one can say, so many awesome characters, I could go on and on. All that's left for me to say is, READ IT!

Finally finished!

I had taken a hiatus from this series for about a year I think, only bc I felt the books to be overwhelming with additional “Fluff Content” that honestly wasn’t needed at all! In my opinion, I did think it loved the story along AT ALL!

I had at one point actually spoke with the author of this book & asked him about the added unnecessary content!? Basically it wasn’t something he wanted to do but needed to do, which I’m sorry Andy P but that’s total BS! You know it & so do I. It just doesn’t add any real significance or substance to the story at all!

Aside from that, now that I’ve finally finished the book I’d still recommend the series. Characters are amazing, although I think there are just too many extra characters to keep track of: ie the thief turned older brother to the Hunters Charge. I honestly couldn’t recall him at all.

The ending seemed…rushed. No real epic battle with the Sage like there was in the last 3 books. I mean there was a battle but it wasn’t as thrilling as the others.

Again this is coming from someone who put this book on a shelf for a year (who is a workaholic) but one who doesn’t like fluff being unnecessarily added to a story. Why!? Bc I got bored real quick, & it didn’t feel like the story was going anywhere. (Hence why I stopped reading it)

Otherwise good book (long winded) but def a good read! Should be interesting to see what happens next!

Savior finishes the first arc of the Hunter’s story, so it feels like a conclusion and it’s a satisfying one. The journey to Enarium is difficult and saving Hailen might be impossible but the Hunter swore to save him, so he’ll do everything he can. But he also must stop The Sage or else destruction will reign. This book is so well written that you’ll be right there along with the Hunter and feel all his pain and struggles. The Hunter’s struggle for humanity is what makes the Darkblade books so compulsively readable. Of course there’s lots of action and intrigue which definitely move the plot along, but the Hunter is so caring for the weak and needy and discards of society and he fights his dark side so vigilantly and that’s what really makes me love these books. But don’t worry the battles and body count in this story are worthy of the Hunter, so if that’s what your here for you won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait to see where the Hunter’s story will go next! All I know is it will be epic!

I received an ARC from the author and I’m voluntarily leaving an honest review.

If I had to sum this novel up in one epic sentence...
The Hunter's past comes crashing together in one epic conflagration of chaos, death, and excitement as he makes his way to and then explores the lost city.
Threads from the Hunter's past as we've experienced in the series so far, as well as parts of his past that we've seen revealed all come slamming together in a flurry of death, mayhem, and emotional turmoil.
Characters new and old arrive and earn a place in the readers heart, both good and bad, and even some characters being a bit of both.
The combat and conflict continue to impress and the over arching storyline moves forward amazingly.
The reveals about the history of Einan, the war of the gods, the Sereneii and everything between then and now are truly astounding and provide some eye opening context to everything that has happened so far.
I am excited to see where The Hunter goes from here, and what else awaits him as he travels across Einan and hopefully slays more Abiarazi.

Finally some freaking answers!!! This was the last book in the first arc for our beloved Hunter. I absolutely loved every bloody second of the Hunter learning his past, gaining his memories back--to a certain extent. His freaking wife and DAUGHTER!! OMFG Everything Hailen does is amazing, I'm serious the kid can do no wrong. I am gonna be so sad if he dies or turns bad...he is a perfect sweet angel baby.

As always Andy blends the brightest spots with the darkest of dark fantasy giving us a rollercoaster that we have come to know as the Hunter's story. Every time something good happens, something 3 times as bad has to hit us. Oh the hunter found his wife....well his daughter is still fucked right now...oh his daughter isn't even there...well fuck...yay we can save our people!....at the cost of my wife's life....Truly Andy is the GOAT of dark and gritty fantasy writer's and definitely my auto buy author.

On one level, the Hunter of Voramis is a dark hero, struggling to recover his stolen memories and save, if not the world, at least one precious part of it.

On another level, the Hunter is Everyman - his dual nature, of a human-demon hybrid, externalising the image of the human soul, with its immense capacity for both good and evil. In this dramatic saga, laden with love, hope, betrayal and many deeds of derring-do, we see enacted the old, old drama of good vs evil, and with such a wonderfully satisfying resolution!

Even at the more superficial level, it's a wonderful story, smoothly written, with well-drawn characters and a ripping fast pace. But on the deeper level, it's utterly gripping.

Highly recommended, as well as to lovers of dark fantasy, to lovers of adventure and of allegory.

This is another gripping tale that sees the Hunter trying to catch the Sage before he can get to the lost city of Enarium, a place he also desperately needs to get to, to find a cure for the Irrsinnon, which Hailen is starting to suffer from again having left the relative safety of Kara-Ket.

As with the previous books, this one moves along at a brisk pace, with plenty of violent brutal conflict that culminates in an emotionally tense climax to the story.

We finally get to learn more about the Hunter's past, along with the Abiarazi, Bucelarii, Serenii and Elivasti as this tale unfolds and the truth about Enarium is revealed. It also sees a few of the Hunter's old acquaintances make a reappearance as he travels to Enarium.

This also brings together many of the plot threads from the previous books to a stunning conclusion, but it also creates new ones which promise interesting possibilities for future books.

Wow I can't get over this book! Andy outdid himself with this one and to my joy he answered almost every question I had about the series. The use of Soulhunger, the dogged determination of Sir Danna's pursuit, the arduous struggle to Enarium and the way Hunter found it, the truth about The Pit and Kharna and how the Elivasti fit into all of this, last but not least the Sage plus so much more I haven't mentioned. My mind is blown! If you've only read book one you will definitely want to catch up with book two and three and delve into book four, Darkblade: Savior because I never could have thought up bases of this story in a million years, Andy tells all. It's that epic.

Everything seems to be arrayed against The Hunter in this book. The demon Sage is just about to get the last piece to put his plan into motion and Halien is being draw more into his power and sinking into madness. To save him Hunter has to unlock the secrets of a hidden city. The good news is that if he managed to he can also stop Sage and maybe even find the wife and child who have been haunting his dreams. Hunter is such a great complex character and enjoy following along as he discovers the truth and has to do something about it. Just when you think that his life will settle down he faces another twist and more to do before he can rest.

This is the book that shifts everything. Questions that you wanted answered right from the beginning start to come to light. It is filled with twists and turns that you won't expect. Once again, tears fall when things get too much in the feelings department.

A gentle ending which has me already looking forward to my relook through the Queen series, so I can dive head first into book number 5.

I highly recommend taking on this whole stack in the world building order. This large dark world will grip you, make you question what you would do and flip you on your head just when you think you know what is going to happen.

This volume of the Darkblade series can be summarised as follows: half-demon assassin figures out the value of life. The unexpected twists and turns of the plot are definitely matched by the very intriguing exploration of good, evil, indifference, and the emotions that colour life. I love the examples The Hunter sets, and how steadfast he remains in his convictions, despite everything that happens in this book. One of my favourite aspects is the author’s focus on choices, and that we always have a choice even if it is to maintain the status quo and allow evil to be perpetuated by others.

I am most definitely enjoying this series and can’t wait to get to the next volume.

I could not stop reading!

A dangerous journey. Is all hope gone? Will my heart be broken again? Is there any chance of redemption? You be the judge with this incredibly well written edge of your seat read! While protecting the boy Hailen, the Hunter is on the hunt for the immortal demon called The Sage. He also needs to get Hailen to Enarium for the boys sake, or maybe even for his own. The twists and turns here are fantastic! Every book in this series gets better and better and this is an Assassin book you do not want to miss out on! I cannot wait for the next book!

The Hunter learns more about his past and his world than he could ever have hoped for. There are so many twists, turns, and surprises in this book that I often stopped reading to think about what was going on and digest the new information. But as I thought about it, I realized there were hints all along, starting in the first book even. BRAVO to Andy Peloquin for fabulous foreshadowing.
As usual, this book has beautiful writing with vivid and detailed battles balanced with poignant interpersonal and internal scenes. Although this book ends the Hunter's quest that has driven him from the onset, a new quest is introduced and I can't wait to get a hold of the next book.

Better

I first read this a few years ago, then one of Andy’s newsletters (where he talked of a re-write) piqued my interest and I decided to read again. In truth there were times when I wondered if I had read it before, the re-write is excellent and it was always a good tale.
If you’ve not come across The Hunter before, go to the start of the tale and make sure you get Andy’s latest versions, they’re worth it.

Best Yet!!!

Savior is the best to date in reading order. Pacing is very good and Andy does a great job at bringing the plot and pieces together without as many reminders as in previous books. The writing changes in book four and really amps the stage for the remainder books. Compared to the previous three, it really keeps great pace and doesn't repeat the plot every other paragraph. This made for a much more enjoyable read. Well done.

Just perfect!!

The discovery of the Darkblade series has been one of the highlights of my reading habit in recent times.
The world building is first rate, the characters have stayed with me and the dark tinged hope that keeps you going even though all seems hopeless is physical sensation manifest.
I can honestly say that I can’t WAIT for the next book.

Be careful, all you people out there: this series continues with book no. 5:
Darkblade Slayer, series Hero of Darkness Series, same author.

It's the same series, just complete (this one only has 4 books, then you gotta switch). Not sure what happened or why the books are not connected somehow, but, if you wanna go on with the series, this is good info to have. Good luck!

Gifted with a Quest

The plot lines come together as questions raised in the preceding books of the series are answered. No rest for the Hunter but a new understanding is gained. One door closes but another opens wide. I admire the cover illustration. I read this book on my Amazon Kindle Fire HD 10 tablet, thru Kindle Unlimited.

Another amazing epic soul-stealing adventure

This series continues to get better with every book! Dark, heart-wrenching, so many twists and turns, and yet somehow the Hunter manages to find his way through it all and get the job done. You know you're in Big Giant Epic territory when the MC goes to meet the Big Baddie and there are still 4.5 hours left in the story. 😆

This is the end of the first arc for the Hunter and I thought it was really good. I was needing to know how it ended! And I was surprised by a character that I thought for sure was going to die but didn't! I mean they are now stuck in a chamber, but not dead. I am excited to see where Hunter and Kiara find themselves in the next book!

fantastic read

I really loved this book. I only wish Garnos hadn’t been killed. It was too obvious and formulaic that he would be killed. I would’ve found it more satisfying if he had survived, albeit injured. Otherwise I enjoyed it thoroughly and hope there will be more.
