Black magic is consuming my city, and I’m the lucky one who gets to stop it.
It’s not like I have a choice. One moment, I’m living my life, using my limited magical skills to round up rogue sprites and restless ghosts for the Bounty Hunters Guild. The next, I’m being kidnapped by a smoking-hot, sword-wielding, warrior-man and dumped in front of an elder god.
Things didn’t get any better after that. It might have been my fault. Maybe telling a god that he isn't very good at his job wasn’t the best way to make a first impression. Of course, when that job is ‘Warden of a supermax prison of paranormal perps located under Mount Olympus’, maybe he shouldn’t have let one escape in the first place. I’m fairly certain that most people would agree with me. Maybe just not with the way I said it.
Now hunky sword-man and I have been tasked with tracking down and catching the magical miscreant, before he brings my city to its knees. To that end, I’ve been made stronger, my magic increased. As if I needed that. The last time I had access to more magic, I accidentally bound the spirit of my deceased grandmother to my housecat. Hopefully things go better second time around. As for my sword-wielding sidekick? Well, he has his sword, I guess, though he refuses to draw it. What a pair we make.
I didn't volunteer for the job, but this is my city, and I’m not going down without a fight.
Riley is one of those early-morning people you love to hate, because she swears she doesn't need caffeine, even though the coffee-maker is connected to her smartphone. She lives in a three-story townhouse by the good graces of a tabby-cat who rules the house, the couch, the table, well, basically everywhere. When she's not groveling for forgiveness for neglecting to pet her kitty enough, Riley is strapped in to her writing chair coming up with crazy worlds where she can make her own decisions of when feeding time is and how much coffee can be drank without her friends--of which she has three--holding yet another intervention that they threaten to post on the internet.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
Jean Jones is not your average everyday Guild Bounty Hunter; she in fact has very little magic. That is until she comes up against something she's never seen before and ends up in danger herself. Next thing she knows she is wisked off to Mordathu and is given powers that she has to learn how to wield them in order to save herself and capture an escaped prisoner. This is an exciting adventure full of all things magical and full of twists and turns that are guaranteed to keep you turning the page. I enjoyed every minute and anxiously await her next adventure in this series. I read an Advanced copy in Exchange of an Honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
WOW! I couldn't put this new book by a fantastic author. This book has so many fun things inside, an insane asylum, Gods, a prison under Mount Olympus and Bounty Hunters of the Spirit world that normal people just don't understand or see on any given day. Jean is our heroine in this story and she meets a delicious drink of water with a sword that he carries on his back. A rich mysterious gorgeous stranger intent on purchasing everything in her neighborhood, who has serious interest in dating her. Not to mention her grandmother's spirit being trapped inside her housecat. I had a few chuckles about the grandma/cat though. Overall, I loved this book and can't wait for the next one. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Most of the time JJ is satisfied with her job as a member of the Guild, but when she tries to convince her boss and co-worker that there is more going on than normal, they refuse to believe her. Then her life takes a turn nobody could have predicted. Fantastic book. I loved all the characters, they are compelling and well written, but a absolutely loved JJ, she is snarky, stubborn,, and sometimes funny. Action, magic, shifters, and some unexpected twists in the plot make this a must read. I loved it!
Spirits. Insane asylum. Sewers, ick. Gods. Mount Olympus. Prison. Erebus, a god. A mission from a god. An impossible mission. Extra powers. OMG this book was good. So good. What a brilliant start to a new series.
I’ve read other Riley Storm books and I like this new series as well. The strong female character coming into stronger powers and trying to figure it all out is a recurring theme in her series, and I’m here for it!
Made it around 40% of the book and had a DNF because this girl could not keep two brain cells going when meeting a hot man and that really took me out of the book and I literally could not get past it.
After reading Blood & Fangs and Soul Bound Shifters - this novel did not seen to get going. The MC was unappealing at best and the book ended where it started, chasing Sprites - not original.
