TORNADO OF DRAMATICS

The Lemon Sugar series and Ms. Carolyn Finch have fast become my new favorite author and series and it is bittersweet to reach the end. I was intrigued by the prequel, A Quarrel at the Quilting Bee, spellbound with book one, In the Company of Men, and found myself laughing out loud and gasping with book two, The Café on Crescent. In this final book 3, Hopes and Dreams, it had this reader on pins and needles with the life and death dangers and criminal figures. The story will have many beloved and humorous characters from Oakland, Manitoba. Buckle up for this final journey of discovery, dreams, and burying the past to embrace the future.

“Life is a gift! We must seize every happiness—you have to change.”

For a talented seamstress like Mrs. Cali Tyne, to be offered a coveted slot at Fashion Week in Montreal, is a dream come true. But this dream will journey through multiple nightmares before it is over. Traveling alone with one-year-old Josh won’t be easy, and keeping up with all her trunks full of her designs. What a shock to see Detective Kane at the train station and he steps in to assist her when she is frantic.

Detective Kane is on a case, involving a notorious crime family—the one involved in the murder of his wife and unborn child. He doesn’t have time for distractions, but there is no way he can ignore a damsel in distress—even if she unsettles him.

The story’s plot is full of intrigue, danger, mystery, suspense, and chemistry. But sometimes chemistry can be volatile, and that involves the situation between Kane and Cali. Both have suffered severe loss, that has affected their outlook on the future. Kane has waited eight long years with the murder of his family to be able to see justice served against the Stoli crime family. Cali is a war widow with an infant who was left destitute and has slowly started building a life for herself and Josh. Both have sworn off future relationships, yet when they are together, sparks are flying.
The stress of Fashion Week is harrowing, but for her Nanny to come down ill, places her at a disadvantage—just the travel by train is challenging with a teething toddler. What a shock when she is informed someone has come forward and provided her with a Nanny for the event. Losing your model, that all your dresses have been altered to fit has her snapping. Feeling so out of her element, and seeing how most of the other designers are more modern, leaves her ready to pack up and go home. Why wait for an offer? But, when her precious son and his temporary Nanny are missing, she will discover that nothing before has been as frightening as Josh missing.

The story has the good, the bad, and the ugliness of people. There are two stories happening at the same time, one involving Cali and the second, Kane—but they interconnect. Kane is dealing with a crime family, not trusting anyone, and suffering injuries, along with life and death issues. His work is what keeps him from wanting to find another wife—he feels responsible for the death of Bea and his unborn baby, because of his job. When Kane learns of what has happened to Josh, he is caught between a rock and a hard place, continue taking down the Stoli family—or help rescue Josh and return him to Cali.

Cali: What am I to you?
Kane: You are everything to me.
Cali: Kane, you’re hurt and—well, as your everything, I have to forbid this transfer.
Kane: I thought you were hurt beyond repair and had no further use for men?
Cali: I was utterly wrong.

The story is a clean historical story that kept the pages turning. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to the characters, and happy to see the outcome of several relationships.

A little action, a little adventure, a lot of love

I anxiously waited for book 3 of the Lemon Sugar series to come out and was not disappointed. Book 3 focused on Cali Tyne and Detective Kane, which was a natural continuation of a meeting in Priscilla Hartwell’s dress shop in Oakland, Manitoba, in book 2, “The Cafe on Cresent.”

Detective Kane is thrust into Cali Tyne’s “Tornado of dramatics,” from the moment she leaves Oakland to showcase her clothing line, ‘Hopes and Dreams’ to compete for an apprenticeship in Montreal. From train rides to car rides to boat rides, Cali and Detective Kane are constantly on the move, enduring obstacle after obstacle, until they come to terms with what it is they want out of life.

It was great to meet up with old characters from the author’s previous novels! Although I didn’t get to see much of my beloved Mrs. Carr and Mrs. Daindridge, they made an appearance! They are also mentioned in a hilarious passage in Chapter 9, when Cali is telling Etta what everyone was up to back in Oakland! I laughed so hard I had to reread it.

Another must-read by Carolyn Finch!

❤️Tornado of Dramatics❤️

This whole book was so exciting! Mrs. Cali Tyne, a “tornado of dramatics”, widow, mother and dressmaker makes a trip to a fashion showing to see if she can apprentice with a large fashion house.

Detective Kane is tracking a pregnant woman mob boss who had his wife and unborn child killed.

In this mix is a demented Harriett Winston who makes this trip a nightmare for Cali and Kane.

Time for a deep breath. This series was wonderful! Please start with the first book, “In the Company of Men” and book two, “The Cafe on Crescent.”

Jay

Another easy read in Ms. Finch Lemon Sugar series this time focusing on the widowed mother Cali Tyne. As always the plot involves not only budding romance but a crime also. Did find what I thought could be a discrepancy for the era in which the book takes place involving the sex of Detective Kane's unborn child. Hoping the author continues the series.

End of the series

This book follows Cali as she takes a train from Brandon MB to Toronto and then to Montreal, with her fussy toddler Josh in tow. She will present her new dress designs at a show, hoping to gain an apprenticeship. A deranged lady kidnaps Josh, and Inspector Kane manages to come to her aid, as well as deal with a lady criminal. A good wrap-up of the series.

Sweet Romance

I did enjoy this romance although I found the heroine a bit overly emotional at times. Otherwise, I loved the characters and the suspenseful plot kept me interested. A great read.

Major disappointment after the first two books in the Lemon Sugar series. Author seemed to lose the theme of the resilience of strong women fighting their way in a man's world.
