Jerk

Rate this book
You don't want a nice guy.
Just admit it.

The real guy you want to sweep you off your feet isn’t wearing a cardigan. He won’t remember your anniversaries or bring you hot chocolate on a cold night.

The guy you want is rough, rude, and hotter than sin.

A total jerk.

Still, inexplicably, you’re madly in love with him. Why? Is the sex really that good? Why don’t you want the nice guy? The one you can actually take home to Mom and Dad? The one who smiles with his eyes, who will laugh at your jokes — even the bad ones? The one who will hold you after a hard day, who will run to your side even if it’s inconvenient, who will cherish and worship you like something priceless and precious?

It’s inevitable that guys like me lose hope in ever finding love. Capturing your heart isn’t easy when the world is full of countless jerks you’re so willing to give it to. What’s a nice guy to do when he’s playing a game you won’t let him win?

To tell my story properly, we have to start at the end.
As in: the end of the Mr. Nice Guy I used to be.

Oooookaaaay… let’s start with how I misinterpreted the prologue and blurb and expected a totally different book. Because both promised that the story begins at the end of Mr. Nice Guy. But it totally didn’t. And yet it truly did.

So while I thought this actually begins with the Jerk, it literally begins with the story of the end of Mr. Nice Guy. I was so disappointed because I was in the mood for smth different (the Jerk!) but in hindsight the story I read only worked with the inside on how Mr. Nice Guy ended up transforming into a Jerk.

Do I love that guy in the mirror? This sweet, hopeful, patient guy who has so much love to give, but no one in the whole fucking world to give it to? This Mr. Nice Guy …? What has “being nice” gotten me, anyway? Other than walked all over, misunderstood, and taken advantage of?

Is this how bad boys are born? Are they all just former Mr. Nice Guys who gave up?

Anyhow… even though this is about the push and pull between two men I had the feeling the romance between them overall was rather secondary. It was slow-burn and with that also low on the steam. But maybe you are into that and don’t mind.

“Is this Danny guy really worth it?”
He’s the only guy who’s worth it.

I’d say in the end this book was more about self discovery, perception of others and making choices that might not have been the best ones after all. I’m rounding up for the messages the book delivers - despite my surprise at how the story actually went.

Overall I did enjoy reading the story and the cover is just super hot!

side note:
“And I got you […], plus that reversible pink-blue octopus plushie you probably snuggle with every night.”

We have the exact same one *lol Who else?

I almost didn’t finish this book, but I’m really glad I did! Rome turned himself into the type of man he hated most and almost lost himself completely to it. I was rather upset with him until Danny made him take a look at himself.
I loved Danny. He was almost like an ethereal angel, too perfect and pure to be real. He’s very insightful, intelligent, gentle, giving, the list goes on.
I love the author’s style. It’s rather laid-back. Not fancy, but straightforward without being simple. This is the first of Daryl’s books for me, but it won’t be the last.

From the extremely sexy cover to the absolutely engaging words inside, Jerk took me by complete surprise. Daryl Banner had me thinking it would be a bit of a lighter read with the use of the word jerk as the title but in the end, this well-written story became oh so much more and I couldn't have been happier. The combination of the poignancy of an unrequited love together with Banner's classic wit produces the kind of book that honestly made me sigh out loud.

Giving his main character, Romeo, the chance to change his persona in order to win the heart of one Danny Chen, brings with it startling realizations that gave this story a realism I wasn't expecting. With Romeo wanting to be that jerk, that guy who he thinks Danny wants only drives the man further away, and with that perhaps their only true chance at real love. But it's the prodding of his former bestie Prisha and the once wise words Danny offered once upon a time that makes Romeo rethink all that he has done over the past year and finally take that look in the mirror once and for all. The fact that what he sees is not what he thought he would adds a layer of truth that is both eye-opening and touching.

There is a definite charm to all of the characters we are introduced to, whether insufferable or not, together with a few comic moments that despite being a bit uncomfortable for some, added the right amount of levity when needed. Add to that a memorable and beautiful sex scene and you have one wonderful book.

Jerk is the tale of finding the strength within one's self to become that person one should be, not what they think others want. And for Romeo, he may have taken the harder road to get there, but his just reward made the journey most definitely worthwhile.

5 big stars!

Not having read anything by this author before I was feeling a bit leery as I started turning the pages. From the very start though this book set itself apart from many of the other m/m romances I've read, showing surprising depth in a tale of self-discovery that dealt more with finding yourself rather than finding a traditional HEA. Interactions between friends and moments of self-reflection became the driving force in Rome's life while his friends to lovers romance with Danny sat on the back burner waiting for Rome to discover himself.

When readers first meet Rome they see an average gay man, an all-around nice guy who's unlucky in love. Seeing the one man to make his heart race (Danny) dating a real jerk does something to Rome though, it changes him and how he views himself. So for the next year Rome decides to be more like the jerks who seem to always get their heart's desires. But once the year is up, do nice guys finally finish first? With each turn of the page I found this tale a journey of self-discovery that pulled at my heartstrings, had me disappointed with Rome a time or two, while desperately hoping that he'll discover life's little truths. Words of wisdom, courtesy of Danny and Tim, offered moments of enlightenment that added much heart and soul to an already unforgettable tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. Danny was especially insightful, given the small amount of time readers got to see him, and his words endeared him to me and made it understandable what Rome saw in him and why he was so desperate to win him over.

While the romance between Rome and Danny takes a backseat to the emotional growth of Rome, that doesn't mean there aren't moments full of heart, self-acceptance, along with a satisfying HEA. Rome's journey is one all readers can relate to as we all try to be who we think we should be. On a whole it's a bumpy journey for Rome, one where he's not always the hero, but it's a journey that was perfectly imperfect as you discover the need to love yourself before you can love another.

Tired of being overlooked because you are such a nice husband? See the super nice, hot guys always falling for the jerks? Why not join the jerk gang. And yes it works for Romeo but he'll soon learn that there is way more to winning the guy than meets the eye and that loving yourself is the key to your happiness. Steam factor is nice as well!

I really enjoyed reading Jerk, an ABCs of Love Novel by Daryl Banner. I really loved the moral of the story of loving yourself before you can love anyone else. I really loved the character development of Rome. It was also really interesting to see how the concept of Jerk itself impacted him personally and professionally.
One of my favorite quotes was when Danny told Rome, “Fall in love with the guy in the mirror first before you dare to give your heart to anyone else. That’s my motto.” I believe that was a great motto and one that every reader should live by. I feel like the message of self-love was so strong throughout the story.
My other favorite quote was when Tim told Rome, "“It’s who we want to become. Our friends may mean well, but they tend to hold us back. They want to keep us exactly the way we are, because it’s comfortable for them. Family, too. But how else are we supposed to free the spirits of our secret wishes, other than through expression of such things as a different picture of ourselves, or clever words in a dating profile? Maybe the pic I swiped right on isn’t so far from a truth that’s buried inside you.” I really love how that quote illustrates how sometimes the people closest to us, project who they think we should be instead of our true essence.
Overall, I highly recommend reading Jerk by Daryl Banner, it is a beautiful story about loving yourself before you love someone else.

Daryl Banner is pretty much known for writing sweet romances with a lot of humor and very likeable characters. He steps out of his comfort zone with JERK...a nice double play on a word that can mean many things. The MC Romeo (Rome) is at times a mystery as well as an open book. He is vulnerable and sweet, but can be salty and very aggressive, given the right situation. The story takes you on a journey of self-discovery and explores the age-old question of "do nice guys always finish last?"
Come along for his ride and discover for yourself. Chock full of humor as well as interesting side characters. I loved it!

This author is a very hit or miss for me, with only hits so far being a couple of books in their Spruce Texas Series, but this one is very much a miss. Both Rome's characterization and the plot felt superficial and rushed.

Initially I felt somewhat confused to where the story was headed with Rome, was he a nice guy who decided to become a jerk? So I started skimming the whole chapters to get some fast answers (yes, he was) and then I just decided that I could not even be bothered to skim it because it was not worth my time as Rome read as a completely directionless and not very likable character.

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
Rome is an average gay man. He works in advertising, goes daily to the gym with his best friend, and uses a dating app to try to find love, without much success. There is one particularly interesting date that left me smiling, even if it didn’t go well for Rome.

I quite enjoy reading stories about everyday people and Rome really is a good guy. But a romantic failure, and seeing the guy he actually wants dating a complete jerk, changes Rome. We jump forward a year and Rome has changed. We don’t see him go through the transformation. On one page he is a sweet guy and on the next he is an A-hole, behaving the way the guys he used to hate behaved. The sudden change was a bit jarring. And I didn’t think much of the new Rome. He wasn’t nice and really seemed fake. But the old Rome and the new Rome collide when his old crush, Danny, now single, reappears.

Seeing Danny pretending to be someone he is not was a little difficult to read at times but it was also entertaining. There is a great scene at a party where dates from his old life and new life appear and it was fun, and could have come straight out of any romcom film.

Rome’s search for romance is a rocky one, but to see him find the real Rome and find love was totally worth it. JERK was an entertaining and ultimately satisfying story.

Ruthie – ☆☆☆
This is part of a connected series, but you do not need to have read the others to enjoy this one.

Romeo is not exactly a standup guy, in fact there was quite a lot of the book where I could not decide whether I wanted to continue – but trusting that there would be a turning point, I read on, and I am glad that I did. His problematic year did then lead to an opportunity to try again with Danny, the guy that he behaved very badly towards. Danny may be his love interest, but he doesn't really have a starring role in the story.

When the lead character is behaving like a jerk, it is more difficult than usual to read on, but given the title, I knew that in this meaning of the word, the author was definitely making a strong point.

4 solid stars.

A well written story with the basic plot of a nice guy (Romeo) falling for the one guy (Danny) he cannot have because Danny has a boyfriend (Joey). Joey treats Danny like dirt, so Romeo decides the only way to possibly date Danny is to become like Joey...a jerk.

Through a quirk of circumstances, Romeo (aka Rome) and Danny inadvertently share a chaste kiss underneath the table on their coworkers' board game night. This totally separates the two would-be lovers, with each retreating into their separate worlds.

Over time, Rome commits himself to working out at his company's gym to bulk up his physical presence to match his new "I don't give a damn" persona. He sets up a dating app so he has a different man any night he wants, dumping them in the morning. He looses his coworker's friendships, but acts like he doesn't care at all.

Danny decides to give Rome a second chance and they go out for a dinner. However, thinking Danny likes men like Joey, keeps his new rough-edged mask on, totally ruining the date.

Once more the two come together on a night out with friends. But after a series of sarcastic comments from both men, Danny storms out of the club and tells Rome he is totally through with him and not to contact him. As a final retort, he tells Rome to take a good look in the mirror and decides if he truly likes what he sees and the person he's become.

Rome does just that, with the result being that he realizes his desire for Danny will not be realized if he stays the way he is. He deletes his dating app and begins to realign his personality back to being the compassionate, caring guy he had been over a year ago.

After one more chance meeting with Danny, Rome manages to convince him that he has, indeed, changed back to the man that Danny could come to trust and hopefully love. Being a generous and caring person, Danny agrees one last time to go out on a date.

After dinner and some soul-baring, Danny invites Rome back to his place. But has Rome REALLY changed? Or is he just wearing another mask to get together with Danny? Playing the part of the "jerk" again?

Well, those who read my reviews know I am not going to spoil the conclusion.

My compliments to the author, Daryl Banner, for a well written and sensitive book that takes on how gay men really see each other, particularly in a gym setting, and the lengths the ate willing to go to to get the man of their dreams. Only one editing error, so kudos to Daryl's editor. I look forward to reading more of his works.

This was a new author to me and at first thinking about the title I was not sure whether I wanted to read it but seeing the cover intrigued me and I said go for it! This is not your typical romance so let’s lead with that. Romeo was a love hate for me. I was very on the fence. He went from sweet to need to be a Jerk. Reenter his crush Danny and the emotional rollercoaster goes full force! This was a journey to grow and really find the true Romeo. At times it was cringy for Romeo but we must trust the process. I love how raw and real the story is and it gives you a different path to a HEA. Danny plays a part in this book but for me it really honed in on Rome path to greatness. Be ready when you one click! I first read another book in this series and came away from it a bit unimpressed.
BUT....
and yes it is quit a big but (that's why the CAP LOCK was used for)
I found out that Daryl Banner wrote one of the books in the series so I just had to read it. Honestly it was like the Universe held me captive and forced me to read it, because, well the Universe knows what it's doing, ok.
And dang if Mr Banner didn't once again blow my thigh high lace stockings clear off my feet, yes the ones with the bows in the back. And that is a difficult feat to do while I'm wearing my Doc Martins.
Where in lesser hands this story could have ended up being a cliched romance trope, in Mr Banner's skilled hands and fingers he twists and folds and bends the material until you swear he'll end up with a crane but instead you are left gasping for air, snot running out your nose, glassy eyed with those lovely puffy dark circles underneath and loving every minute of the experience. Because that is what Mr Banner delivers, every effen time.

"Does it feel better being the type of guy you used to hate?"

WOW!!

I absolutely loved this book.

Romeo was so infatuated with Danny, even though Danny had a jerk of a boyfriend. And when Danny decided to help Romeo by being his wingman out one night, Romeo totally ruined that whole thing by spontaneously kissing Danny. Boom! There went their brief friendship, up in smoke.

A year later and a whole lot of soul searching, Romeo has become the "Jerk" he hated so much because he couldn't stand being the nice guy and everyone looking past him and not at him.

Will Romeo's transformation, in body and mind, turn Danny on? I mean, if his boyfriend, Joey, was such a jerk and Danny loved him, would he look twice at Romeo?

Peeps! If you have not read a book written by Daryl Banner, you are sorely missing out and need to get on the bandwagon pronto. Seriously!!

This book was so impactful that I don't even know how to start this review. I was honored to be an ARC reader and from chapter one, I was so drawn into the the story that I couldn't stop, or better yet, I didn't want to. Romeo's or Rome's journey through the book is one most of us have experienced or known about. Mr. Nice to JERK to full circle reflection of himself. Going on this journey with Rome leaves you on the edge of your seat. There were times I caught myself saying "don't do it" outlaid realizing that it is just a book. But that is how pulled in you get on this story. Daryl writes this in a way that really changed how I wanted to engage with a book. The characters you meet throughout the journey are relatable and so incredible real. This book is a MUST READ.

Ugh I want to cry thinking about this book. I have to admit I wasn’t sure about the story initially, not because I am a middle aged heterosexual woman, but because I now see it for what it is. It is setting a storyline stage that is truly more than just a love story. Ugh though that aspect of it was done beautifully. Wink

As I reflect on Romeo I still want to weep. His journey of finding himself is messy, emotional, and thoughtfully done. I have to admit that even at the moments I wasn’t suppose to like him, my momma bear heart kept rooting for him.

The way this story looks at friendship, the good, the bad, the ugly, is inspiring. Romeo truly is one of the “Good Ones” but it takes him a moment to figure out what that looks like. Sigh.

If you are looking for a unique MM romance to read, look no further. I think you too will find meaning and enlightenment in the words of wisdom peppered throughout this story.

Happy Reading Everyone! XOXO

Jerk by Daryl Banner is more than a romance it is a story of self discovery for main character Rome.

After a string of bad dates, Rome was given some advice "Fall in love with the guy in the mirror first before you dare give your heart to anyone else." This is advice I think we can all use at times. But did Rome follow this advice. You'll have to read the book to find out, but it will take you on Rome's journey of self discovery and how he went from 'nice guy' to 'Jerk' .

Jerk is very well written, with great character development and takes you on unexpected turns with Rome's journey through friendship and love.

I have never read a Daryl Banner book I didn't like and Jerk was no exception.

Perfection from start to finish. I can related so closely to these characters and their flaws. I felt like I was reading what could’ve been my own experiences when I was in the dating scene. This is where Daryl Banner really excels. His character development is excellent. I never feel like I’m reading a story, I always feel like I’m living an experience.

If you’ve ever been struggling single in a world of other people who seem to make being single look easy and fun, this is the book for you. Swipe right, already!!

This was my first time reading Daryl Banner and I really enjoyed this story. Going into this, I wasn't quite sure what to expect and who I thought the Jerk would be, and it caught me off guard when I realized who the Jerk actually was and how that affected his potential relationship with the guy who already had one jerk in his life to deal with, along with some sage words of advice and good look at the guy he's become to realize that's not who he wants to be. I really liked the way Daryl Banner creates his characters and the world they inhabit and I'm looking forward to reading more of his books.

I've been wanting to pick up Mr.Banner's work for quite some time now. As soon as is tumbled across the synopsis for this book, it caught my eye right away. I knew i had to read it first! I picked it up and got into this story really quickly. I so enjoyed it!

Romeo's journey captured my attention right from the get go! I wasn't sure what all to expect going into his story and i really liked how that pulled me into it even more!

I loved that i went through many emotions throughout reading. I so enjoyed the fact that there was such realness to Romeo and his story. I really liked how his journey made me sit back and think as well.

With Jerk, Mr.Banner has created such a good and one of a kind read! I am so looking forward to picking up more of his books in the near future!

This was more than a typical romance, it was a fact of unfortunate circumstances where in our society you can't fit in and be seen unless your some beautiful muscled jerk. But in this case who you become on the outside doesn't always fix the inside. In this story boy meets boy who he instantly falls for, things happen and not in a good way. Romeo then goes through some serious self discovery, good, bad and a jerk, before he can find his way to Danny. Great storyline, characters are well developed, writing is on point. Love the good friends and laughs along the way. I really enjoyed it.

From the first time Romeo sees Danny he is smitten. He is devastated to learn Danny is with a jerk. He decides to become a jerk himself.

Super fun story. Romeo’s pre-makeover dating life was hilarious. I liked that the story comes full circle. Great supporting characters. Terrific writing and word building.

This was a beautifully written slow-burn love story. The author presents two flawed characters who find each other one day and can not forget about the other. The lengths people will go to make another want a relationship with you. Finding yourself and liking yourself are important to be able to love another.
"For one blissful second, we are so close, I feel like I'm in his arms."
"Keep an open mind and an open heart. To everything."
"They always groan with delirious pleasure."

Jerk is another great book by Daryl!Rome is a great character and was not what I expected. His character had a lot of development and growth. And a lot to learn. Including he needed to love himself before he can love others. Not always an easy lesson. Daryl engages us with his wonderful writing and the dynamic between the characters. People you would want to know in real life. It was a fast read and fun. Go one click!
