Unable to escape his past, Matt Stone heads North leaving behind the memory of his dead wife and son. His journey takes a turn when he comes across his late son's doppelgänger; Trevor Reed. Blinded by the resemblance, Matt becomes obsessed and begins stalking him. Little does Trevor know, he becomes wrapped up in Matt's delusions. Concerned, Trevor's mom, Jesse, enlists the help of the local authorities to keep him safe. Despite the involvement of police and eventually the inclusion of the FBI and an enthusiastic reporter, Trevor disappears. The Reeds will do anything to get their son back which results in a chase starting in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts to an Island on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Will their efforts be enough? Will they find Matt and Trevor? Or will they be too late?
Definitely would lean more towards 4.5 stars over 4 starts. This was a powerful story of tragedy and loss, that I could not put down. I did get a little confused at times with the large cast of characters. I loved how the book is told from multiple perspectives and felt that each character had a uniqueness among them. This book was a high-paced read!
Jesse’s young son Trevor keeps saying a "Badman" has been watching and following him, but Jesse and her husband Stephen have been dismissing this, thinking he’s just seeking attention. But now the Badman has come right up to their back fence and spoken to Trevor, calling him “Tommy.” Trevor is in tears. Jessie takes him seriously this time, and calls Stephen to come home. They discover footprints leading to the woods behind the house, and piles of cigarette butts showing that someone has been watching their house for a while. Trevor hasn’t been imagining a stalker: he’s real.
They call in the local police chief, Joe. But there’s a complication: Joe is Jesse’s former high school boyfriend, and he’s still carrying a torch for Jesse. Stephen doesn’t like to have Joe around, but realizes he has to rely on him if he’s to keep Trevor safe.
This launches us into a story of parental love and guilt, mistaken identity, kidnapping, grief and delusion. The characters are nuanced and the plot is fast-moving. This is a gripping page-turner, especially in the last chapters. I couldn’t put it down until the end.
I couldn’t put this book down! I have always been one who struggled to get through a book but I found myself saying “one more chapter” until there were no more chapters to read. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone!
Great read!!! Was not sure what to expect with Trevor but became a book I could not put down. Excellent dialogue and kept me glued to my hand around see what would happen next. The New England places, made the story even more enjoyable. Can’t wait for the next one from the author.
Such a fabulous, intense and gut wrenching read. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Matt. The author did an excellent job of making him sympathetic, even though he was unhinged. And poor little Trevor. Such a cutie. I felt I was really experiencing the story. Wonderful read!
Loved Trevor! I liked how you couldn’t help but feel bad for the “villain” Matt. Everything that happened to him you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him.

Our Review: In this powerful story of tragedy and loss, debut author, S. Hilbre Thomson, demonstrates the effects of viscous crime on one man and the perfect storm created by a system-wide failure to adequately address the issues of the varied aftereffects suffered by survivors. Thomson has done an exceptional job of creating a sympathetic antagonist, leaving the reader to ask how and why something so horrendous could happen to one person who then simply falls through the cracks.
Trevor sucked me in from the first chapter and held me at the edge of my seat the entire read. I found myself staying up at night, using the flashlight from my mobile telephone, to read long past my bedtime because I simply could not put it down.
This is the first novel by S. Hilbre Thomson - but you would not know that from her writing. I feel like she put a lot of thought in to the development and depth of her characters and this is one of the reasons the story and the feelings you get while reading the story are so strong.
The story takes place in New England, so if you live in or have visited Massachusetts or New Hampshire, you will appreciate the accuracy of the geographical references. I felt like I could really picture in my mind the darkness of Lake Winnipesauki in the off-season and it added to the thrill of the story.
The large cast of characters keeps you focused and really gives the story a multi-dimensional feel. The author does such an amazing job of sculpting the personalities of her characters - especially Matt - the "Badman" you are afraid of and yet also feel sympathy for at the same time.
Trevor is a thrilling, face-paced read that you are sure to enjoy!
An average suburban family finds themselves terrorized by a man broken by his past, who believes Trevor is his deceased son. The man, first spotted by Trevor and named the “Badman,” stalks and kidnaps the child, and the family must race to rescue him before he slips from them forever. Thomson enlists a large cast of characters to tell the story from multiple points of view including Trevor, law enforcement, a journalist, members of Trevor’s family, and the stalker himself. And each perspective brings a unique take on the impact a delusional man can have on an innocent family and those surrounding them. While having many individuals telling a linear narrative can be confusing, Thomson’s characters are so multidimensional and flawed in realistic human ways, their joint perspectives work together to weave a synchronized tale of deep-seated grief, loss, tragedy, and trauma that impacts more than just the family who sits at the center of it all. Trevor is a high-paced read from the first page until the last.
S. Hilbre Thomson turns a kidnapping nightmare into a compelling page-turner. A sympathetic cast of family members, an intelligent crew of law enforcement officers and a surprisingly canny little boy can't rely entirely on logic to counter an irrational stalker whose intentions aren't completely criminal. Once started, this clever and fast-paced book is almost impossible to put down.
S. Hilbre Thomson put a lot of thought developing her characters. The story takes place in Massachusetts and New Hampshire and I felt like I could really picture the settings. The large cast of characters gave the story a multi-dimensional feel. The author does a great job sculpting the personalities of her characters. I felt a tremendous amount of sympathy for the character, Matt.
Such a good read! It was hard to put down. Very well written . The story moved along at a good pace and the author really does a good job putting you into the character's different shoes and minds. I really could feel the emotions of the main characters. Lots of emotions and the story is both exciting and very detailed.
This book I could not put down! I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happens next. I think I read this book in two days and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you’re looking for a book that has suspense, thrill and emotion, Trevor is for you!
