I destroyed organisations that controlled galaxies.
I brought the World Government to its knees.
I was the first man to outwit the greatest mind humanity has ever known. I fell in love with the fiercest female warrior who ever lived and came out alive with nothing but a smile. I escaped kidnap from the most ruthless crews in known space. I formed my own space crew who conquered a planet.
I created a new race with nothing but a word and a kiss.
I have witnessed the depths men will go to for power. I killed friends, hopes and dreams to gain it.
This is my story.
My name is Quinton Blake. You may have heard of me.
Dominique Mondesir has always wanted to be a writer since the age of sixteen. He could remember reading the hobbit and Harry Potter late at night and thinking, I could do that. More than ten years later and he has. His first book Origins (Fallen Angels) was published September 2015, with three more so far released. He lives in England with his girlfriend and cat and hopes to travel the world before he gets to old.
OK story because where the romance is interjected it breaks up the story.
OK story. Don’t particularly care for the main character it took almost a whole book before he stop being a bonehead bumpkin. The second problem with this book is where the romance is interjected in the story is inappropriate nobody starts kissing and hugging and making out doing the middle of a firefight that’s totally unrealistic and broke the story for me. Make out when you’re safe and secure. Not when you’re on an enemy base and bullets are flying all around you. The authors beta readers if he has any should’ve pointed that out to him. Like I said the story is OK but the romantic interlude placed in the wrong parts of the book broke the story for me. You may enjoy it give it a shot.
The start of this book is absolutely disgusting if you’re a man! Yeah, the author created a main character that almost made me want to stop reading the book. He’s such a pathetic wimp that I couldn’t see any way he could carry the story much further in the book. But, I plowed on and yet, it didn’t get any better until more than half-way through the book.
This guy, Quinton Blake, works for one of the largest corporations in the galaxy. The Xcorp ran his life. His boss, Gregory Goodwin, didn’t care one bit about the people that worked for him as long as they got done what he told them needed done. Oh, and they had to get whatever he told them done when he told them it needed done or they would be fired without a second thought. Quinton Blake accepted this kind of boss because he had no backbone and didn’t want to lose the miserable life he was living. And miserable it was even though Quinton couldn’t see it.
Oh, he was a hard worker, but he never once thought to stand-up to his boss, nor could he stand-up to anything else. This guy was the definition of wimp. You’ll find that out very quickly when he has an encounter with an old college buddy who’s obviously a junkie of some kind and asks Quinton for a handout. Quinton says no, so the guy knocks Quinton senseless since Quinton has no clue how to put up a fight. He’s robbed, including his shoes, and left unconscious on the street. When he comes to he gathers himself and makes his way home.
Now this story takes place way after WW3 and humanity has reached the stars. Earth has also fallen under a one-wold government, but it is actually controlled by several mega-corporations, the largest of which is Xcorp. They expect people to comply with whatever edicts the company issues and don’t like anything that “rocks-the-boat”. So, Quinton gets home to a house that is a disaster. Nothin is picked up, nothing is clean and his wife is nowhere to be found. He finds his two sons sitting in one of the boy’s bedroom playing some video game and when he tells them to pickup their room, they just tell him to get out of their room and stop bothering them! Yeah, that’s the way to treat your Dad? Well, this wimp of a man, shuts the door and goes on down to his bedroom which again is a mess. He takes a shower and calls his wife. She’s extremely annoyed that he would interrupt her night out with the girls even though she’s been out with them for more than a few days. But he meekly tells her he’s sorry for interrupting, hangs up and goes to bed!
That morning , his boss told Quinton that he was going to have to take a trip for the corporation since his boss couldn’t go. He said the trip would be in a few days so he, Quinton should get ready. But, his boss calls him that night as says the trip has been move to this morning, so he needs to get his backside up and moving. Surprisingly, when Quinton arrives at the space port, he’s ushered onto an executive space ship and given the VIP treatment since after all, this was supposed to be his bosses trip. Quinton was supposed to deliver an archaic thumb-drive to someone. He had it in his possession but didn’t know what was on it.
Then his life changes dramatically. Probably for him, this was a very good thing. The ship he’s on has a mercenary detachment but Quinton doesn’t know why until he’s awoken by loud noises outside his bedroom. He goes out and sees a soldier or mercenary crouching down near a wall while all the lights are out. He also notices on mercenary on the floor against the wall with a large hole in his head. The merc tells Quinton to go back inside and hide, but Quinton stands there like an idiot when someone or something drops down from the ceiling and quietly slices the merc’s throat. This person in black asks if he is Quinton Blake and if so, does he have the thumb-drive. He’s stupidly says yes to both and the person in black says she’s a Junkyard Dog and she wants the thumb-drive. Quinton swallows it of all the stupid, idiotic things to do.
So the Junkyard Dogs, a gang from Safe Haven is taking him to their planet until he decides to give up the thumb-drive or they just cut it out of him. Quinton, of course wets himself at this unwelcome development in his moronic twist in his life.
This book is full of, well, foul language. It’s not just the rough men who spout almost every word that’s foul, but the females use that kind of language freely. I don’t think any of the people in the gang is formerly educated, but they have educated themselves in certain specialities. Well, there is one that is highly intelligent, Poppy. She is something special.
I like the book, but it seemed pretty long. I think I’ll continue reading the series but it does change something drastically towards the end. Not sure where this story will go and I don’t actually think the author does either, but we’ll see. Book 2, “[A Dog is Born”](https://amzn.to/3OHnKao), is available on Amazon now. I guess I’ll add it to my reading list.
This is full of entertaining British slang and a fresh take on dehumanized near-future corporate life. Quentin is a loser corporate drone who gets a fresh start when something goes dramatically wrong while he tries to fulfill a deceptively simple mission for his boss. Thrown in with the roving pirate gang the Junkyard dogs, Quentin faces the challenge of surviving a hostile world long enough to finally grow a useful pair. Will he do it? Sure, more or less.
The problem? Leaden, rough writing which distracts from and weighs down an otherwise promising storyline. This book needed much better, tougher editing than it got. From the first page:
”I hardly noticed it, as metallic-smelling smoke filled my nostrils and whirled around me like mist; my eyes tried not to focus on the bodies that lay unmoving around me. I tried to avert my eyes from their twisted and mangled forms, but it felt impossible to do so.”
Starts off well enough (nice mental imagery of metallic smoke swirling like a mist) but then we get the same thought twice followed by an oddly passive construction. Unfortunately, this sort of thing turned into a pattern, which then turned into a constant distraction and annoyance.
Our [mild-mannered] protagonist is tasked with delivering a memory stock. He boards a rocket ship. It gets raided by pirates. But they are the "nice" kind of pirates. He swallows the stick. Instead of gutting him, they take him along.
He later attempts to escape his captors while drinking with them at a dive bar. He ends up on the floor of a very poorly maintained restroom. His captors get into a gunfight. None of them die. They escape the bar and pile into a car.
In the post-adrenaline-high, our hero and one of his captors (the one girl in the crew who is also easy on the eyes) end up snuggling up together in the back of the car. While he is still soaked in the residuals from the floor of that very poorly maintained restroom.
Many miles and many chapters later, he finds her in his bed. Because...of course he does.
Wish fulfillment fantasy. Many spelling/grammar issues. Written to be made into a movie rather than read as a serious book. Several instances where characters repeat information that the reader already knows. Then there is a bag of clothes that mysteriously appears after our protagonist has been through various assaults, rapid escapes, and other events where picking up a bag is neither convenient to the plot nor actually mentioned in the text.
I made it 29% through the book before theoretically hurling it across the room in a manner purportedly reminiscent of Dorothy Parker.
Maybe I should have asked myself why? Thought I would give it a try. It was not the mindless and endless battle upon battle, so it had that going for it. It was just interesting enough for me to keep me reading, but it did seem to drag on a bit. It seemed to be missing some of the villain "justice/revenge" I usually see. I did not seem to get the feeling that the "team" was coming together and the romance seemed lacking in buildup (but I am not much on romance novels).
Plot hole, so skip this paragraph if you like. I know it was needed for the conclusion to book #1, but if this threat was so dangerous to humanity, why banish it to a remote star and instead just drop it into the nearby star? Not enough demonstrated logic to keep it around for potential future harvest. Could have fleshed this out a bit better.
This does end in a bit of a cliff hanger, but how else would you transition into the next book. But due to the length and effort it took me to read book #1, I will be passing on #2. Not that you will not enjoy this book, it just is not for me in the long run.
I read this because of some good reviews. It was a mistake.
It’s a middling tale, but with too many unfounded assumptions, not least the central conceit of a centuries old AI Android falling in love with a helpless salary worker kidnapped by “heart of gold” stereotypical space mercenaries. Who then “dies” many times, only to wake up safe and sound after she saves him. Again.
On top of this, it really needed an editor (or a better one). I stopped noting all the errors, some typographical, some just plain continuity problems (a naked man pulled down by his shirt), but they still glared at me and stopped my involvement.
I lost count of the vision impairments suffered by our hero as he failed to save himself.
2 stars because 1 star is only for books I can’t finish, and there’s only been 1 of them.
I like this story, I like the characters, and the way the story intros and builds. I also liked it in Black Lagoon an anime that is very similar, I think the author should maybe have at least change some of the features of the crew, bald black leader, nut job with a gun, slightly side kick comic relief, the addition of an AI was good, but for Christ's sake the head of the criminal area is the same Russian female who is also in hotel Moscow. The company hiring mercenaries to get the item back, the bar scene, the muscle cars, almost the entire 1st part of the book was the story from Black Lagoon. The second part of the book was better and more original. Its a good story don't get me wrong and I will read the next ones just not all his.
Great story! I love the characters and the universe. The story surrounds a man called Quinton Blake, who is a nervous man who works in one of the galactic companies that rule the galaxy. He ends up getting caught by mercenary group when sent on a mission and joins them, which leads to many travels and interesting people.
I have to be honest in say that the reason I probably like this novel as reminds me of the anime and manga black lagoon. The main character is very similar to rocky and some of the gangs give me the the same feeling. This made me love this novel even more. The second half goes more into the science fiction elements but the author blended it so well in to the overall story.
Cannot wait to read the second!

I very much enjoyed the author's world, ideas, and the story line they presented, which is why I gave this novel four stars. What i found irritating was the continuity flaws: someone grabbing the character's shirt two pages after the author described him as naked except for his boxer shots, a scene detailing the protagonists first time hearing gun fire....one chapter after describing the hijacking of his ship...including gun fire, etc. etc, etc. This complaint may seem petty but each time it pulls me "out" of the flow of the story, which I find very annoying and amateur-ish.
Dominique Mondesir started writing a book with a clear idea how and where it should go. Then something happened. Like many good authors, the book took control and went in an entirely different direction.
Thank you, literary guide.
I recommend this book because of some very unique happenings. What happened? Would you believe a centuries old AI in a gorgeous female body becomes infatuated with a loser, low middle management drone - and after all the adventure winds up pregnant?
What a beautifully crafted tale, DM obviously has a prodigious talent.
This story drew me in, with characters that are larger than life and monsters from your worst nightmares.. and funny. The badinage between characters is near perfect, I found myself chuckling out loud a few times. It’s safe to say I really enjoyed this book.
This book is well worth reading. I’m off to enjoy the next in the series..
This was a great story, and gut bustingly funny, but gosh is it long! It feels like there's a lot in here that could easily be cut and you still wouldn't lose any cohesion of the story. As much as I genuinely laughed out loud (mostly at Willis) it's felt like a chore to read at times and it's put me off getting the next one straight away. Maybe sometime down the line, I might.
Lots of bullets and bloodshed, lots of pointless murder and mayhem, and mostly just worthless. I found no acceptable character development and the storyline made little sense. By 20% I was completely finished trying to find a story amongst all the killing and senseless slaughter. Beware the Dog? No, beware the book!
Interesting but somewhat boring repeats the phrase "seemed like an eternity" over and over to describe various people waiting for something throughout the book. The protagonists and antagonists are cliche nothing new or even semi original with the overall plot. I found it difficult to empathize with the two main characters and the
Who knew that being kidnapped, exposed to seedy characters and anus-puckering terror would be so character building.
A well constructed tale, told well. Very entertaining throughout. Some plot twists nearly gave me whiplash, but all were logical and necessary in revealing the whole story.
Very entertaining book full of heroes and villains, great well fleshed out characters (it needed the extra pages, lots of fighting, swearing, rescuing, some romance, more laughs, black humour and fun adventures. I want to find out more so I’m off for the next one.
I liked the progression and the gradual skills coming through of a man who thought he knew what he was If you have seen the film Nobody then there are parallels but Quinton does not pretend to be a nowhere.man he is that drone. But with the right stimuli.....
The way the main character progressed throughout the story worked great for the story and really sucks you in as well. There is a ton of action, space adventure, high tech fun, and overall a good reading experience. I recommend this book and am glad there is a series to continue the adventures of this Crew.
Great characters and development. True to human greed and political stupidity. Also true to form in that you don’t have to be a true hero to do the right things in life. Hate having to wait for more..lol…but that’s also true in life and reading.
I loved the story it reminds me of an anime called black lagoon. But is very different and I enjoyed the main character and his story was great I enjoyed the world and was looking forward to seeing more books
This book is a nice Start to what could be a truly entertaining series. With interesting characters and an intriguing storyline as well as lots of action and suspense it is well worth the time it takes to read.
This is an excellent story, creative, well written. There were many instances the crew was in a tight spot and I couldn't figure out how they were going to get out of it. Highly recommend. 5 stars.
Way To Much whining by the MC and totally unbelievable story,Not even a day passed the MC has sex? After being struck numerous times in the groin? Really? Then he kills 3 or 4 people but let the one he hates get away? Ok I know this is just Kindle but still!!
This is pure science fiction. Some mistakes, but some laughs as well. The mc needs a lot of saving and I almost dropped the book because the first part of the book was so slow. Mc also has a lot of self doubt which drags the story down at times.
I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. This is not your Star Trek universe. This is brutal, fun, in the edge entertainment. It's scary, it's funny, and most of all, satisfying.
I should have purchased this book the first time I read the advert for it.
Wow. This story is a joyride to behold. The world that's been created by Dominique Mondesir has captured my imagination and has me waiting for the next book in this series.
I'm amazed that this author can write so many fantastic novels, I hope that he never stops writing. His books are some of the best Entertainment I have read and worth the time to read them. Thank you for a very fun entertaining read.
Don't bother with this one! The MC is a worthless sack of scrap that isn't fit to be a side character let alone the mc. He is a worthless human being and a massive simp! Don't read this book
Well thought out exciting story telling. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series to find out what happens next .It makes you care about the characters that have been created by someone’s fantastic storytelling mind!!
