Has your heart been broken, does it yearn for those shattered dreams to mend? Has loss ruptured, damaged or tortured your bliss, so that your soul lingers in the depths of despair?

Soul Light is a mixture of poems and short stories that link, painting pictures that may echo towards your soul, bringing it out of the darkness into the radiance that was thought lost. It is about restoring that sense of something more, within the mysterious town of Wolford, where, between the pages, you could discover what was once thought gone.

I cannot ignore my dreams, so many of them, with names and places and ideas that spark my imagination and compel me to write; to create stories, whether fantasy or horror, or mystery or psychological thriller or murder or even humour and adventure. So, my garden is sown, flourishing, with all manner of growth, and still the dreams come.

Julie Elizabeth Powell, my soul lingering within my imagination; maybe you’ll join me?

"Soul Light" is a collection of poetry and short stories by Julie Elizabeth Powell. The poems are connected to the stories that follow them and each of the stories is linked in some way. All the characters live in the fictional town of Wolford. This collection is all about how loss and grief can take away the light in the soul that gives people hope and something to believe in. The stories and poems are thought-provoking as we take a glimpse into the hearts and minds of people who have suffered loss and the ways they deal with those losses, finding their way back to the light. The poems are written to inspire and to make the reader think, and there is bonus content at the end where a photograph accompanies each of the poems featured in the book. One of my favourite poems is at the beginning of the book, "Hope"; the ending is particularly poignant and appears in the short story that follows. Each of the characters in the short stories has a fascinating story to tell.

"Soul Light" kept me interested and contains a positive message about human condition and the common emotions we share, how we are all linked in some way, just like the characters in the stories. I've been following this writer for many years and have always loved her stories and imagination. I think that her recent works are some of her best; her writing has developed, and it is clear when reading the stories that she is a seasoned writer and is adept at building worlds and creating unique and complex works.

Yes, I wrote this, yes, I would always give my books five stars!

Soul Light explores the nature of grief, how it tangles our feelings, how it can change our outlook and challenge whether we want to go on living. It's not just about death but all manner of loss because of what can happen in our lives.

There is a poem, then a linked short story, which in turn is linked to the next poem and short story and so on. The characters live in Wolford, an unusual and unique place - it will be up to you to decide what you believe.

I've suffered immense loss over the years and hoped that I could help others through difficult times. It may not be what you expect, nevertheless, I think it could ease that dark knot that is tightening your soul.

The stories are beautifully written! She writes from experience of losing loved ones, it’s a powerful read!! This author gets into abuse, romance, redemption. They seem so real, the quaint town, the characters, all seem like real people and places. I can feel myself on the roads with the characters! Wow! The poetry blew me away!! If you have the right people around you you can get through anything. There’s lessons to be learned from this wonderful book. Every story was my favorite! They connect with each other through the town of Wolford, I want to go there!!!! The secrets and beauty of the authors stories makes you drawn to this wonderful town.
Dogs know things!!!
One of my favorite: Open hearts and open minds
are what entices the circle to widen
so that fewer become more.

Beautiful writing from Julie Elizabeth Powell, but that doesn't surprise me, I've read a few of her books and her use of langue never fails to impress me. The intimate nature of the linked stories and poems in SOUL LIGHT is soothing somehow, even though some of the characters' stories are quite jarring. If you've suffered loss of any kind, you may recognize yourself in these words. I know I certainly did.
