This was one of the short stories in Jae's Sapphic Advent Calendar and it's about earthquakes and heroes. I didn't like it alot. It was super action-packed and there were a lot of people that needed saving to the point that it felt just a little bit cheesy. Romance-wise, there are four main characters who make up two couples but there was very little romantic build up as they go from strangers to lovers within just a few days of disaster.
I like KC Luck books although I admit I haven't read all of then. This one popped up and it intrigued me. The story is about 4 women, Tessa/Drew and Ashley/Bryce.
When I first started reading I was a bit annoyed of having to go back and forth between the stories and almost wished it was just about one couple. As the book progressed and the stories crossed and merged and I was eating my words. I do think though that with two full new couples that showing their "romance" felt a bit rushed and not fully explored but then again with everything that happens in this book it felt like a lifetime.
Like I mentioned somethings felt rushed and blown over a bit. The first major incident felt too fast. I would have enjoyed more...drama? I don't know exactly but it happened and then it was done. The suspense of it all was great but then it was over. And that seemed to be how the other incidents went as well, a bit intense and then done.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book I would love to read more on the characters especially Bryce and Ashley as their romance was never fully explored I feel. Good read and a kU so even better.
Wow! Had the lot - two couples, earthquakes, acts of heroism, film star, Marine. You couldn't make it up. Whoops, K C did! A little too packed, but I enjoyed it. Recommended.
I’m Everybody Needs a Hero, everybody seems to want to become a hero.
There are two love stories told in this book, but it’s mostly about earthquakes and their aftermath? I’m not sure. I think all the storylines add up to too much and nothing much really gets told, you don’t really feel it. You can’t get invested because there is just too much going on. I liked the natural disaster storyline and I would have been fine with that being the main story, although it feels like it, it isn’t.
I think this author’s writing is just not something I connect with, that’s ok, I’m sure there are readers out there who enjoy it and there are definitely more authors out there for me to enjoy.
There was so much good that came out of this book. It is a story of four women who are forced to face a crisis situation involving each other. Tess is an aging movie star who has just been called in to replace the star. The movie is from a big hit book that she didn’t read but it’s a great role for her. Drew is the author of the book and the screenwriter for the movie and she does not want Tess in her movie. Bryce is a marine on leave for her fathers death. While she is in California she wants to take an opportunity to tell Ashley how she has felt about her since college. Ashley owns a coffee shop, and it has finally become a success after hard work. Ashley is Tess’s daughter. All women are experiencing different feelings and situations within their own but then an earthquake hits. Suddenly mother is trying to locate daughter and it changes the dynamics of these four women as each try to survive the fallout in California. This is an adventure on steroids with a sweet love story intertwined in a book that is done by a great writer.
There was just a bit too much going on that the characters didn't feel like they had much development around the disasters. While the emergency scenarios implied growth and connection for the couples I would have liked to see it a little more rather than one person being in awe of another. The disasters and emergency response were very exciting and kept me entertained throughout the read.
Not the best read for me, but it's certainly worth a look into if you want a sapphic disaster novel or if you want sapphic family members (mother-daughter) finding love at the same time.
This follow two potential couples. Tess 48, is a successful actress and lands a last minute role in a new movie. Drew is the writer of the best selling book and screen writer for the movie. Tess's daughter Ashley owns and runs a coffee cafe near the beach and Bryce is currently on leave from the marines. Bryce and Ashley liked each other in college but never acted on it and Bryce comes to CA to see if there is something between them. As the movie starts to film, mother nature flares and there are earthquakes. Drew is quickly into heroic rescue mode.
This book was okay but very uneven. Details of one catastrophe after another as the foursome try to find each other and get to safety are exciting. But there is very little build up of romance for either couple. Drew gets a little more time as she’s never been in a relationship before. But there is never a long conversation between anyone. No explanation of Bryces ultimate choice or how it effects Ashley. It all felt very rushed and I expected better. It might have been better to focus on one couple. (2.5 stars)
Full on one disastrous moment after another brings a life altering joy for all the Heroes.
Ashley Landish runs a coffee shop on Venice Beach. Bryce Cooper has a one dream, to tell the college woman she left behind that she loves her. To say they experience a lifetime natural disaster moments before that can happen is no joke. Drew Anderson poured her life into a book and now it's a movie. Tess Landish is about to play her but Drew doesn't like her. Again a whole lifetime of disasters can change everything. I loved thecharacters, the inner courage they all have was inspiring. Such a overwhelming gift to see how each one leaves their comfort zone to help others. Earthquakes, tsunami and so much drama I could not put it down. Both couples have such a great connection and bring out the best in each other. I enjoyed this story very much and would love more stories of them doing simple life together.
The main characters in this story consist of a mother-daughter pair and their respective soon-to-be girlfriends. All of these women are relatively flat stock characters. The story arc consists primarily of the four stumbling from one action scene to the next; saving the day as they go. The tale might be enjoyed by readers favoring action sequences but may be less interesting to those looking for more nuanced character and relationship development.
This was sweetly romantic, with a lot of action and suspense thrown in. There were two couples Everybody Needs a Hero was set around and both were written really well. KC Luck writes disasters happening really well (If you haven't read her Darkness series, do it!). I do think there needs to be a follow up to this one as well, because there was a lot left unsaid🤞
This is a short and intense read with fast paced story and instant love that shines brightly in the face of the earthquake. I admire the brave and compassionate couple, whose selfless efforts saved so many people in the dark and critical moment! The writing is superb and the story hooked me instantly!
Four MCs, Ashley Landish/Bryce Cooper and Tess Landish/Drew Anderson. A business owner/Marine and actress/author. Two couples who work together to help others and stay alive during earthquakes and a tsunami all in Los Angeles! Oh yeah and a movie is being made too. This is an exciting book, with beautiful characters! 5 stars!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The author did a great job of relating the story from four women's points of view, making it instantly clear whose head we were in. She brought these characters to life along with a realistic look at the affects of a mid-level earthquake and its aftershocks. The quake was serious enough to cause major damage without being the "Big One", on par with the 1989 World Series Earthquake in San Francisco, which it reminded me of.
I had to question a few details, like why's a 27/28 year old only a corporal, when my son was one at 20, and if she met her love interest in college, why isn't she an officer? But, there are plenty of explanations for the rank which aren't gone into as they weren't relevant to the story. Everybody Needs a Hero is a nice double-dip romance with enough curve balls to keep things interesting. If you are looking for a HFN romance without too much angst, I highly recommend this one.
This was amazing not only was there two MC but four. After learning each of the characters role a Marine a barista, an actress and RN turn author. There is an earthquake that caused a tsunami which cover most of Santa Monica area. Then dealing with the after shocks the women learn to trust and love each other. Hope there is a follow-up story. P.S. I loved that you used Bakersfield as Bryce's home town and that you use perfect land marks regarding the area its where I am from.
When you read a good book, you want to take it slowly, so you enjoy it. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I couldn’t do that with this one. I could barely take time out for anything else as I was so engrossed in this book. Great characters, wonderful chemistry, and then it all takes off in a rush. No spoilers, but be prepared to stay up late finishing this one! I sure did.
KC Luck delivers another spellbinding disaster story. The characters are terrific. The events, including a major earthquake and a Tsunami, are riveting in detail. The relationships are three dimensional and true to the characters. While certainly not as long as her previous, and most excellent, Darkness series, the book moves along at a good pace and is an enjoyable read.
Earthquakes scare me and this book depicted why. It also showed how people step up in a disaster. Tess, Drew, Ashley, and Bryce are two couples trying to survive while also working on their hopeful relationships.
Wouldn’t mind a sequel to see them together again, maybe without the earthquakes.
Heroes along and in very different ways. The characters are very well writen and their point of view is very interesting to read. You get the story from other angles. The description of the disaster is very detailed and I felt it when reading. This book is worth it to read. It has adventure and romantic.
KC Luck tells an action packed story. It is full of chemistry. I greatly enjoyed it and look forward to more. I enjoyed the book and thought it was well written and had a hard time putting it down.
This was an action packed story with craziness, fear, and chaos of a natural disaster in a major city with two romances woven in. I'm still breathless.
Drew - the author whose book is being made into a movie. Tess - the actress starring in the film whom Drew does not want. Ashley - Tess's daughter who owns the coffee shop on the Venice Beach Boulevard. Bryce - the marine on leave for her father's funeral. When a powerful earthquake and tsunami hit LA, four women face fear and danger while experiencing happiness and new found loves.
What a talented writer. This book is gripping, loving and heroic and I really enjoyed every page. I had not read this author before, but I certainly will now. I highly recommend it!
This is my first K.C. Luck novel and, generally, I was quite taken with it. Loved the Hollywood and Venice Beach atmosphere, the two romances rolled into a relatively short novel--along with an earthquake and tsunami! Quite entertaining. The characters got to know each other very quickly as their world turned upside down. I was stopped a few times by repetitive words, grammatical issues, and punctuation problems. With a little better editing and proofing, I would have given this a 5-star rating. If these technical problems don't bother other readers, then they'll like adore this book. I do know I'll be reading more K.C. Luck!
