John Wesley (1703-1791) was an English cleric, theologian and evangelist who was a leader of a revival movement within the Church of England known as Methodism. The societies he founded became the dominant form of the independent Methodist movement that continues to this day.
“This book owes its existence to a call for something which should present in brief compass and in non-theological language the personality and work of John Wesley, with special reference to the spiritual experience at Aldersgate, which marked the turning-point in his career.”
I learned a lot about John Wesley’s life and ministry in England. It's a very interesting perspective on Church History in the 18th century. There is a chapter on Wesley in the colony of Georgia. The last chapter includes a brief reflection of the times - early 20th century - referencing the World War and the depression of the '30's.
This is not a thriller, but it is a thumbnail history of one of the great religious leaders of the West. It’s a sketch up of the man who brought thinking Christianity out of its doldrums. I recommend it as an introduction to the man and the movement.
