Nog nooit eerder in stripvorm verschenen, is De zaak Styles uit 1920 Agatha Christie?s eerste gepubliceerde roman. Daarin wordt meteen al Hercule Poirot, mogelijk de beste detective ter wereld, voorgesteld aan het publiek.

In 1917 wordt kapitein Hastings, gewond geraakt in de oorlog, gerepatrieerd naar Engeland. Daar komt hij op krachten in Styles Court, in het ouderlijk huis van zijn vriend John Cavendish. De stemming is somber want Johns moeder Emily is hertrouwd met de onvriendelijke Alfred Inglethorp, die jonger is dan zij. Wanneer Emily op een nacht vergiftigd wordt, is een vriend van kapitein Hastings gelukkig in de buurt. Het is een voormalige Belgische politieagent met een krulsnorretje, klein van stuk maar gezegend met een groot speurderstalent. Zal Hercule Poirot erin slagen de waarheid te achterhalen en de schuldigen aan te wijzen?

'Styles' is one of my favourite Christie novels, in spite of/because of being the first Poirot. It works quite well in the comic form with the floor plan being seamlessly shows and the clues being properly introduced. The ending comes a bit too abruptly and the denouement is a bit too short, but that's the problem with this form of art. I enjoyed it.

This is one of my least favourite novels by Agatha Christie. It is written in a weird way and the comic was much better in this case. The mystery itself was quite elaborate and it was probably a bit too long and wandering a lot around people's possible private affairs. I was glad when it finally reached the solution.

Czytałam domyślając się, że to debiut Christie — słusznie jak się potem okazało. Nie umywa się do późniejszych pozycji, takich jak na przykład ,,I nie było już nikogo”, ale mimo to umiliła mi podróż. Minus za irytującego narratora.

Storywise this was quite straightforward and faithfull to the original, nothing to complain about.

The artwork on the other hand left me confused, loved the parallels to Herge, but it was to minimalistic and simple for my taste, also the colours were to bright to find it really enjoyable.

Świetne wprowadzenie, a może i przypomnienie historii z Herkulesem. Ciekawa kreska i z pewnością szybki i łatwy sposób zbioru całej historii.

Wśród komiksowych adaptacji powieści Christie póki co pozytywnie wyróżniają się adaptacje przygód Poirota - "A.B.C." było co prawda nudne, ale z kolei "Morderstwo w Orient Expressie" eksperymentowało z malarstwem. "Tajemnicza historia w Styles" nie stawia sobie wysokich wyzwań, ale przynajmniej nie idzie po najmniejszej linii oporu jak zrobił to duet odpowiedzialny za "Tajemniczego przeciwnika" (o przygodach Beresfordów).

Kreska nie jest specjalnie wyszukana - przypomina francuskie serie komiksowe Hergego (taki Tintin, ale w wersji uproszczonej). Jest - z braku lepszego określenia - wesoła, a momentami wręcz sięgająca po komizm. Widoczne jest to we wszystkich interakcjach między Hastingsem a Poirot. Miło także, że twórcy komiksu pokusili się o jakieś urozmaicenia - fajny jest kadr, gdy Poirot wymienia zgromadzone poszlaki, dobrze wypadają momenty, gdy Hastings biega zdezorientowany za Poirot, który... no jest Poirotem.

Trochę żałuję, że autorzy nie pokusili się o większe zróżnicowanie postaci - bohaterowie są podobnego wzrostu i postury, co trochę męci całą zagadkę, zaś opisywanie Poirot jako małego Belga mija się z celem, gdy detektyw na kartach komiksu dorównuje wzrostem pozostałym mieszkańcom Styles.

Moim zdaniem rozwiązanie sprawy tego morderstwa trochę naciągane. Wiem, że nie może być to takie proste, ale sama lepiej poprowadziłabym tą historię. Mimo to polecam tą książkę tak samo jak każdą inną autorstwa Agathy Christie.

Miło wrócić do tej historii! Styl rysunku bardzo mi odpowiadał, przypominał stare komiksy, które czytałam, gdy byłam dzieckiem. Niektóre książki Christie idealnie nadają się na komiksy, bo przynajmniej w taki sposób można ogarnąć, kto jest kim xd 4/5 ⭐
