Irish author. On the morning of Wednesday, September 20th, the closing months of the Irish Civil War- soldiers of the Freestate army shot dead six anti-Treaty Volunteers atop Sligo’s Benbulben Mountain. How did it come about?
I had the pleasure of spending time with Joe McGowan on Inishmurray Island off the coast of County Sligo, Ireland, a few years ago. He is a consummate storyteller, and has written several books about the history of Sligo. I have collected several of his books.
If you want to read about the history of Ireland, and the terror and brutality inflicted on the people and culture, I recommend this book.
Joe concentrates on Sligo off the ruggedly, beautiful west coast of Ireland. This book leads up to the Irish Civil War and the death of six anti treaty men on Benbulmen Mountain, September 1922, by Freestate soldiers. Benbulben Mountain is one of the most recognizable sites in Sligo. Irishmen killing Irishmen due to disagreements about the treaty with the British, signed by Irish leader Michael Collins and others. The treaty was not enough for many who had fought for many years to throw off the brutal yoke of Britain. For one, the Northern Counties were partitioned and kept under British rule, and would always be known as Northern Ireland, still under British rule today. The early 1920’s became anti treaty vs pro treaty Irish.
“The mist on the mountain was falling While the rain in its torrents did spill The Irish greens and tans they were crossing The side of Benbulbens big hill.”
A compelling read. Excellent free flowing narrative combined with top quality research. Joe McGowan is a gifted writer who possesses the ability to keep the reader enthralled from start to finish. I would recommend this book as a great read to everyone, especially young people and students of history and to the Irish diaspora abroad. I thoroughly recommend this book. The reader will not be disappointed. Thady Kennedy
