Empire Rising #13

Empire's Gambit

Rate this book
The Karacknid assault on Earth has been turned back at great cost to both sides. Only the intervention of the Kulreans saved Humanity’s homeworld from certain destruction. Yet the Kulrean worldships cannot be used for offensive operations. This means Humanity and her allies have only a few months of respite before the Karacknids can make good their losses. When they do, everyone knows they will resume the offensive and Tanaka-lan will seek to end the war once and for all.

With no way to compete with the Karacknids’ superior numbers and industrial might, Emperor Somerville has proposed one final stratagem. The Allied fleet must strike right at the heart of the Karacknid empire in a last ditch effort to try and end the war. Yet to do so would mean venturing into the enemy’s most fortified systems and leaving the Allied worlds at the mercy of Tanaka-lan. Risking everything, James has no choice but to attempt the impossible. No sacrifice can be too great to save his people and his family.

Epic conclusion to an amazing series (or arc??). Favorite book in the series. I truly had no idea what would happen at any given moment. Loved the emotional finish. A much longer (and glowingly positive review) is forthcoming but I just binged 500+ pages of this book so I’ll do so later.

Later Additions:
I've been a massive fan of this series since its inception, breaking my rule of not startinng a series until its done. The Void War just felt like a breath of fresh-air in the space-opera scene, I had to read the next books as soon as they came out. I was never dissapointed, each book added more depth to the setting, more characters, more political and socio-economic entities to befriend or connntend with, and eventually more species with their vastly motivations and perspectives. Each book was filled with twists and new challenges for our protagonist, James, and his friends+family.

The Excepts from Empire Rising - 3002 AD were a WONDERFUL addition to the series and truly made it feel like we were experiencing history. When it foreshadowed the challenges James, England&its colonies, humanity, its alien friends, and eventually the empire would face, I felt the foreboding. In fact, for books before the start of the War of Doom I was reading thinking "what could possibly go SO wrong that it became the War of Doom"?? I was ready to be disappointed for a war not up to the hype of Empire Rising's excepts, but that couldn't have been further from the truth. The stakes kept getting raised until I felt dread every book; truly seeing no way out for humanity and its allies. As characters I adored were killed off / made sacrifices book after book I would've lost hope if not for Empire Rising saying things turned out ok.

All around, well done series/arc by D.J. Holmes.

Now onto Empire's Gambit
-----------------------------------------------
This book starts with Humanity and its allies knowing they are losing the war and need to run a hail-mary play in order to win the war. They need to pull off an attack on not just the Karacknid Core Worlds, but their Homeworld itself. Admiral Somerville's gambit's overall strategy and tactics are slowly revealed to us in tantilizing tidbits. Even still, I went into the book with little to no hope. And yet, time and time again I was pleasently surprised as the book progressed; constantly on the edge of my seat not knowing what was going to happen. One second I started the book....the next I look up, its 5 hours later, and I've read 500 pages. That is how mesmerizing this book is, I finished 500/750 pages in one sitting.

This book takes every shred of knowledge, plot, history, and tactics used throughout all the previous books and amplifies it at a rapid pace. If Humanity and its allies are going to succeed they have to be cunning. They can't just win battles, they need to pull off strategic coup after coup. Every character becomes crucial, and they all have to choose between their personal survival and the survival of their species.

The memorials were so sad :((((. I knew they were coming, and yet as I read the names of every character who died during the War of Doom it really hit home how deeply each character is built up and well done the overall plot is. This is truly a Space OPERA, with characters and actors all acting in concert with their interests and who us readers all love for different reasons.

There are surprises along the way I can't share ;), but suffice to say this book is among my favorite in the series and an excellent way to cap the War of Doom arc. I look forward to whatever the author puts out next. Even if it isn't a Empire Rising-related work, I'll happily read whatever it is. It's rare to find an author this dedicated to world building while maintaining a coherently story line.

Moreso to find one that can ensure each chapter intro from Empire Rising relate to the topic of that chapter, don't invalidate future events many books later, and maintain thematic consistency from the perspective of Empire Rising's author even while the themes of the acutal books in the Empire Rising series ARE thematically different. That level of attention to detail cannot be understated in how impressive it is. Each book/chapter felt like it was a history lesson in the 1st/3rd person perceptive.

So yea.....do yourself a favor and pickup this series NOW; especially because this is a good end point for the forseeable future.

For me this was the first five out of five star book this year. Weighing in at around 750 pages it is a pretty large book as well. It is actually the longest book I have read this year.

It is more or less one long campaign to strike back at the Karachnids and to end the war with lots and lots of space battles with fleets of thousands of ships slugging it out so I guess it is no wonder that I liked the book. Also, this is the thirteen book in the series and, with one exception, these books have been in the four star range or above.

I really like the main protagonists, especially James. I even like the Karacknid admiral, Tanaka-Lan. Even if he is a bad guy, he is intelligent and competent. I also do like that, in these books, we actually do get a view from the other side. Of course, I especially like that view when James and the Empire kicks their asses.

As in the previous books the science part of the fiction is good and plausible, naval strategy and combat is good and there are not really any complete assholes, political or otherwise, lurking around. Well if you don’t count the Karachnid Emperor of course. There are some interesting revelations about him by the way.

During the journey there are a few twists, revelations as I mentioned, a few setbacks. All of them well folded into the story. Too many authors just throw in implausible twists to create shock and drama. Not so in this book.

Of course the book is not just 750 pages of space battles. In between there are the expected dialogue, strategic decisions to be made and, as I mentioned before some twists that expands the story. There is also the part about the search for the Kalassai which is very enjoyable reading.

This book provides the conclusion of the war between the Empire and the Karachnids. However it leaves some loose ends. Not silly cliff hanger type end luckily. The author seems to be working on the next book in the series, which I assume will start an new story arc, and hints at new enemies. Needless to say I am quite eager to see where this next book takes us. I certainly hope that the author manages to create a new fresh story and at the same time keep the winning concept and style that he has created with these thirteen books.

We have come a long, long way with this series! And that's a pretty big understatement if I've ever made one. Starting off with a Commander James Somerville who's career was border-line because of his involvement with Princess Christine, Daughter of the King of England to what we now read about, Emperor of Humanity/Admiral James Somerville has been one tremendous journey. It's just about over with this book.

If you have been following along as I have, you have to have noticed the great number of characters the author has introduced and then killed off. There have been a lot of space battles and not every one was won by "the good guys". People were lost, even good people that had become good friends for Admiral Somerville. But, the authors has kept a great contingent of other characters that have been introduced throughout this series and it's great to see them come through to the end. I think the character development, even of the aliens in this story, is one of it's strong points. You want each character to do their part to support Admiral Somerville because you know he would have done their tasking if they weren't available.

So now we find the Earth humans just about to the end of their empire. It was thought that if they were to ever defeat the Karacknids, the Earth would have to join together under one banner. That was done with then Empress of China Christine coming to the aid of Great Britain and the world in its time of great need. She, as the former daughter of the King of England, managed to convince enough of humanity for the need of a world government. She was subsequently chosen as the Human Empire's first Empress and eventually came to marry James Somerville. Together they have managed to rally all of humanity's forces under one banner and then found a huge galactic community that they became part of together all fighting off the Karacknid invasion.

But, the Karacknids are too numerous and have too vast an empire to fall to the Human Empire. There have a stalemate with the Alliance but once they have dealt with these pesky humans, everyone knows it's just a matter of time before the Karacknid Empire will destroy them too. Then the Karacknids will rein supreme and their Imperator, who his people believe is a God, will surely enslave all humans and aliens alike for all time.

After their latest defeat, Emperor Somerville has made a bold proposal to his alien allies. He plans to gather an extremely large fleet of every species in this conflict and go directly for the heart of the Karacknid Empire. He plans to invade the Karacknid homeworld, Gayla, and capture the Karacknid Imperator and force him to sign a peace treaty. This plan is so bold that most believe it is a suicide effort that could result in the total destruction and enslavement of all aliens and humans in the galaxy. But, they also realize there is not other plan that even comes close to the audacity as this one. No one has ever even remotely breached the Karacknid borders and certainly not their home system. Could such a plan even be contemplated and if so, would there be anything left to actually threaten the Imperator in his own palace?

This plan also means that Earth and all of humanity will be left with only meager defenses and if the Karacknids realize how undefended human space will be, then they could drive directly to Earth and conquer everything the humans are fighting for. So, get ready for a very long and exciting read. This book covers a lot of territory. We even get to see how the Karacknids see this bold plan taking place and their reactions to it. Can the humans really win?

I guess to me, one of the biggest surprises of this book is that the author mentions there will be a book 14, "Burden of Command" is available on Amazon. Even more surprising is that books 15 & 16 in this series are also shown as available. I cannot begin to figure out what they will be about.

story is dragging on too long.

this book is not the conclusion or the end. The story is continuing because big bad daddy Tanaka is still alive. 13 books in and you’re still facing the big bad of the series, I think a new enemy or trial would be very refreshing. And after the author killing off great characters like Georgia, Lightfoot and others what resolution has occurred in the story arc nothing really. And tip to the author stop killing off great characters in your series. The story is entertaining but too many missile confrontations from ship to ship. Thousands of missiles flying through the air or space and only several ships being destroyed a little bit preposterous. And the good guys fighting overwhelming odds with inferior technology it seems to be the same in a lot of books I’ve been reading these days. How about giving us good guys who have the best of everything going up against overwhelming odds instead of them fighting from a deficit. I give it a three because of all the death and sadness. With no actual resolution. You may like the series but be worn it is sad and sometimes depressing.

I keep reading these books because I find the basic story interesting and after so many books I’d like to reach some sort of conclusion. Unfortunately I feel the author lost control of the series quite a few books ago, his philosophies of ‘More is Better’ and ‘When in doubt throw in another Disaster’ have spoiled these books for me. Too much of the story is just about numbers, with each book there seems to be an exponential rise in the numbers of ships, the number of missiles fired (we are now into the hundred of thousands), the numbers of destroyed ships and people killed.
There are still many elements I like and the author does manage to conjure up a decent ending. If possible I would have given 2.5 stars.

Amazing Saga

I have read too many series to be able to review each book on its own merit. That's why I typically review the first book and the last.

This is one of the longest series I have ever read, so I feel I needed to write something.

First key me say that I have ADD, so more than three books in a series can be a real challenge.

Not so here. These characters are complex and relatable, the action is, never-ending, so excitement levels, are alway high. Finally, the premise is, so refreshing that I couldn't help but be drawn in.

If you like sci-fi, and battle strategy, you will live this, series.

Wait... there's more??

13th Book

13 books in and I cant't enough about this series. What a story so far. I read these as Kindle Unlimited books but I will buy this series just like I bought Empire Corps and Honor Harrington. Military Science is my favorite genre and I started reading SF and Fantasy in '56. I was only 6 and my first author was Robert Heinlein. DJ Holmes is a new favorite author and like other authors I read, I good authors and great storyteller I read I will everything he has written. I recommend this series highly. Now I will read Book 14 a lot of changes coming I suspect.

Another page turner. Same good stuff, same flaws.

More battles, more about our favorite characters, lots of fast action. Lots of comma faults and typos.

To enjoy this book, you must suspend your knowledge of astrophysics or economics. If you can, it's a good read. The story is great.

Also, while the protagonist is male, the vast majority of the warriors, heroes, and leaders in this universe are female. All the villains are male. Can be tiresome, but the character development is good.

Great read.

This book was a long one and it had a little of just about everything .There was plenty of action both in space around different planets to battles on different planets. There was a lot going on in this one. They picked up some more alien help from some new allies. The book was well written and had a great storyline to add to the series. Well worth the time to read it.

Outstanding book has to be expected by this author

DJ Holmes fully develops his characters. He tests the moral compass sometimes they are found to be wanting. But at the end they come through. This author has the unique ability to build characters and stay with story lines and expand them. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all 13 books so far. Now to read 14.

Amazing Series that Doesn't Let Up

This entire series is extremely well written and and tie ins at the beginning of each chapter, being told from a naval academy instructor in the future add more depth to the story line.

Can't wait for the next books in the series!
