This one was the best yet! But then I didn't expect otherwise from Gawain's *cough* I mean Gunnar's story. I read it in just two days (and if you guys are familiar with my reading speed you know that's a feat 😅). It was so good!!!

I don't know how many of you know this, but Gawain is my absolute favorite Knight of the Round Table. He's my favorite figure from Arthurian stories period. Every retelling of King Arthur should have a Gawain. Actually, every Arthurian story should star Gawain. He's the hero we both need and deserve 😌

Okay Imma stop talking now before I convince myself to start writing a book exclusively about Gawain 🤣 (one of these days though...).

The plot was really great, kept me guessing and I'll never grow tired of just how Norse inspired this story world is (we've got some jottun in this one). Both the characters were amazing, naturally Gunnar/Gawain was my favorite but that's a given. I cannot wait for more books in this series and to get to the bottom of what this bleeding curse is about.

I received a copy of this book from the author, all opinions, however, are my own.

Another fun medieval adventure from one of my favorite authors! This one features a second chance romance between Gunnar, one of the Knights of Brethren and Mikaela, the girl he has loved for years but who is a bond slave to his brother, the Earl of Likness.

This had everything I have come to expect Jody Hedlund YA books - likeable characters with some depth, an intriguing plot, action and adventure, and swoony yet sweet romance.

Can be read as a standalone but there is a plot thread that carries through the series so better to read them in order.

There has never been a time when I haven’t been utterly taken by the stories and the characters that Jody Hedlund creates with her words. This book was heartwarming and the characters so very sweet. I am so invested in hearing how this comes to a conclusion in the books ahead!

“One act of courage has the power to clear the path for more.”

Jotunn, a creepy forest, forbidden swoony romance, an evil brother, and a quest for the Holy Grail make Jody Hedlund’s Ensnared a thrilling latest installment in the Knights of Brethren series! I love this series and find with each book, I love it even more. With well-written brave knights and intelligent maidens, it’s easy to fall in love with each couple and their daring tale.

In this story, Gunnar, the handsome knight known as the “slayer” of hearts, is on a mission with Torvald to find the Holy Grail which promises to cure the queen’s bleeding disease. Underneath his flirty, playboy facade, Gunnar has only ever loved one woman, his childhood friend Mikaela. But as the brother of an evil Earl, romance with a lowly bond servant is forbidden, not to mention dangerous for Mikaela and her family. While he tries to hide his love for Mikaela, when the quest for the Holy Grail leads him back home to her, he doesn’t know if he will be able to give her up again.

Mikaela had her heart broken by Gunnar five years ago. Believing him to only be toying with her affections, she has finally settled on a different future. When Gunnar returns on a dangerous quest, she has a hard time keeping her resolve not to love him. But when Gunnar journeys into the dark Hardanger Forest, she must decide if a future with him is worth fighting for.

Absolutely adored Gunnar! This charming, swoony knight who is too handsome for his own good, completely won me over with his devotion and willingness to sacrifice everything for Mikaela’s happiness. The story had a bit of an enemies to lovers vibe, but like Mikaela found, it’s hard to stay angry with him for very long. Their heartfelt, powerful attraction definitely kept me turning those pages. I loved the hide and seek scene where he finds her in the tool shed and those cute storytelling moments with his nieces.

Mikaela is a heroine worth cheering for. She’s brave, passionate, and desiring to do something to make things better for her people. She’s strong and resolved, but also willing to forgive. She’s a great match for Gunnar. I especially enjoyed her willingness to sacrifice something precious to save others.

This is definitely one story you don’t want to miss! Now, I can’t wait to find out what happens to Torvald. This clean YA romance could be read as a standalone, but it’s definitely more enjoyable if you’ve read the previous books in the series. Thanks to the author for the advanced complimentary copy. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4 1/2 stars/5

I've been looking forward to this book since I finished reading Entwined and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Medieval knights, desperate villains, strong maidens, and a noble quest, this book was full of adventure and romance and I could not put it down. I loved Gunner and Mikaela! Theirs was such a heartfelt love story. At first, this book had some enemies-to-lovers vibes, but you quickly learn that there is so much more to Gunner than the womanizer he has played. I loved the tender friendship and devotion along with his fierce protectiveness. The chemistry and flirting were the kind that make you grin as you are reading along. I also loved that the plot had so many unexpected twists and turns. I did not know how a happily ever would be able to come about, but I really enjoyed the way things worked out and I am anxiously awaiting book four!
This is a clean romance with some swoony kisses and excellent banter. Hands down I will be purchasing a paperback copy of this book.

“One act of courage has the power to clear the path for more.”

I love Jody Hedlund’s books and especially the ones she sets in the medieval era. She is so good here! This series captivated me from the first book and this third offering still does. I loved the addition of the forest’s dangers. No spoilers so I won’t say more. Theses courageous knights are awesome. There is another book in the series and I can’t wait for it.

My thanks to the publisher for a copy of this book. The opinion in this review is expressly my own.

Lighthearted, dramatic, romantic, clean, and sometimes campy... literally everything I love. All book should be like this. So many YA novels these days have much more intense themes and darker plots. I'd rather read something a little unrealistic than read something dark or inappropriate. Please write more Jody Hedlund!

A knight more noble than he appears must fight to win the woman he loves.

Mikaela has plans to marry to get out from under the dangerous gaze of the Earl. But when his younger brother, Gunnar, returns in search of the Chalice to save the Queen's life she wonders if she can deny her already Ensnared heart?

An engaging and enchanting romance of forbidden love and daring. Mikaela works hard alongside Nanna to provide for her family, I liked that she is responsible and does a great job with her two young charges. I loved getting to know Gunnar better, and get good glimpse past the façade he shows the world, he is daring and loyal despite his reputation.

One of my favorite characters had to be Nanna, and her ever watchful ways, she is a wise woman, and a daring heroine when called upon. I will also be interested to see what role their new friend Sven takes in future books.

Overall, a enjoyable and entertaining read, filled with risk, romance, noble knights and fair maidens, as well as faith. A wonderful addition to the series, I can't wait to read Torvald's story next!

Jody Hedlund has delivered yet another swoony, inspiring, and thrilling tale! Ensnared kept me utterly captivated—as with all of her books, I couldn’t put it down. Readers will love getting to know the depths of Gunnar’s character and meeting Mikaela, a true role model and a great heroine. And as an added bonus, we get to see some familiar faces and receive a set up for Torvald’s book, which I am absolutely dying to get my hands on!

If you haven’t read Hedlund’s books, you’re missing out. I can’t recommend them enough! 4.5/5 stars

I have a book hangover; this was just so good! This book did not disappoint! Ensnared is the third book in Jody Hedlund’s Knights of Brethren series. I have been eagerly awaiting this one and it was of course wonderful! Ensnared follows Gunnar as he searches for the holy grail. His journey will take him home, home to the only woman who has ever held his heart, Mikaela.
I really liked the characters in this book. Both Mikaela and Gunnar endeared themselves to me from the beginning. Mikaela was such a strong female character and yet she knew when she had to be silent. She was a servant to an evil man, but she tried to stay true to herself and protect her family. Mikaela had to learn to trust God and Gunnar even when things felt crazy. She had to fight for what she believed in and hope for a better future.
Gunnar was another awesome character; I loved reading about his development and growth. He had always tried to hide from his brother, slipping under the radar. But when he came home again, he knew that he would have to stand up for himself especially if he wanted to protect the woman that he loved. Gunnar had to fight for what's right even if it meant going against his brother. He had to learn that sometimes taking the first step of faith is the hardest especially when it means going against your family.
Gunnar and Mikaela were cute together. They had history, but it was also soured by deceit. They had to learn to trust each other again and how to fight for their love. Gunnar and Mikaela also had to figure out how to keep their friends and family safe from the evil overlord. Will they be able to come together and save not only each other but also Mikaela’s family?
I really enjoyed the plot and I was engaged throughout the whole story. The characters were great and I am super excited for the next book. I was on the edge of my seat, waiting to see how Gunnar and Mikaela were going to end up together. They were facing so many odds. All in all, this book was amazing.
I loved, loved, loved Ensnared and I would totally recommend it! It was a wonderful addition to the series. It could be read standalone, but I think that it is best read in the series. Ensnared is a medieval YA book inspired by the stories of King Arther and his knights.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.

This is the third book of the Knights of Brethren series and this series just keeps getting better! Another courageous knight is searching for the Holy Grail but there are many obstacles along the way. Gunnar is very handsome and a noble knight indeed, but he admits that he is a "slayer of hearts". His heart, however, belongs to his childhood friend, but Mikaela has very different feelings about him. Gunnar broke her heart several years ago so how can she trust him now? How can there possibly be a 'happily ever after'?

If you enjoy a story with kisses that make you swoon, incredible physical chemistry between a knight and maiden, and an adventure full of twists and turns, this is the book for you. Ensnared is a clean romance that targets the young adult audience but it's also a great read for older readers. I was totally 'ensnared' with this medieval romance, and you will be also!

I received a digital copy of this book from the author but there was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Just when you think you can’t love a Jody Hedlund book more than her previous release, she issues forth another outstanding novel. Her latest, Ensnared, was a story I could hardly put down. A young adult medieval romance, this book continues her Knights of the Brethren series. But just because it is labeled YA, do not be put off as an adult reader. This book is utterly captivating!

At times reminding me of The Princess Bride, Hedlund creates a captivating tale of valor, love, and sacrifice. I was absolutely “ensnared” by every part of this story. My imagination soared at each tumult of danger and hint of romance. Tender, poignant, dangerous, and courageous, this book is truly one I will never forget.

I received this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

I received an ARC, but all thoughts are completely my own!

From romance to adventure to action, Jody Hedlund had me utterly ensnared (pun fully intended) from the first page. She creates tension and banter between characters that gives you butterflies and makes you laugh out loud. She shows a love pure and true that makes you want to be one or more of the characters. I love the details she includes that make the story that much more special, such as a map and multiple perspectives. I love that I typically am able to guess at some of the things that will happen and most get confirmed, but there are always wildcards I never saw coming. I also love how she continued on the past storylines from previous books in the series and gave a refresher in case people forgot important details.

CRITIQUE/SPOILER SECTION!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!!

You definitely can’t go wrong with this series! I have read every single one out (out of order because I found them mid series) and have loved them all! They can stand alone and you won’t be lost because the storytelling is so good but you will want to read them in order if you can.

These Knights of Brethren sure do make quite an impression on you. It is hard to pick a favorite but after reading Ensnared, Gunner has moved to the top of my list. I loved his wit and sarcasm. He made me smile and laugh out loud several times. He also had a sweet and kind side that came out with Mikela and his sweet little nieces. The scene were he met those little girls and made them giggle melted my heart. And Mikela and Gunner wow what a great love story between these too! Don’t miss it!

This book was also action packed as Gunner and Mikaela head out into Hardanger Forest to catch the jotunn and find the chalice that could save the Queen. The story continues in book 4 so you will want to read that but you will also be satisfied with the ending of book 3.

Grab a copy. You will fall in love with this series too!

Although every book she writes is amazing, Ensnared might be my favorite of the Knights of Brethren series so far! The characters are engaging, the romance is endearing, and the plot is enchanting. I found it easy to become invested in the story almost immediately and had no trouble ignoring sleep in pursuit of knowing what came next in the story. I liked how creative this story truly is with medieval knights, lovely maidens, and dangerous forests and villains. I am always impressed that Jody Hedlund can continue to come up with such unique storylines with memorable characters. I really liked the romance between Mikaela and Gunnar and enjoyed reading how their relationship grew in the story; in fact, childhood best friends to lovers just happens to be one of my favorite love tropes! I do recommend reading this series in order as I think the story builds on previous books. I am so excited to read the next book in the series! Highly recommended!

The third book of the series and just as riveting in adventure and romance. This book is the take on Gunnar's story and starts with the details of his search for the magical chalice that is believed to have the ability to heal the Queen. The search takes Gunnar back to his homeland where his evil brother has been ruling things to ruin. There he reconnects with the past love of his life Mikaela, who he was forced to hurt to protect her however she didn't know that and saw him as an enemy. As the story weaves pieces of their past together you can see the hurt start to leave as they realize how much they need each other. I especially enjoyed all the time spent in the mysterious Hardanger forest, the characters strength and wits had to truly prevail in order to survive. The ending left me wanting to read more!
Gunnar was an interesting character to get to know, he was two sided when it came to his reputation and his truest thoughts and actions. I enjoyed seeing him turn more into the man of character that he actually was and less the cad everyone assumed he was.
Mikaela was a caring yet gaurded character, towards the end she figures out what her truest feelings are and is able to let go of past hurts and move forward with her life. My recommendation, read it!
I want to thank the Author for allowing me to read this prior to release, this is my honest review of the book.

This series just keeps getting better and better with each new story and this definitely was no exception. I loved Mikaela from the start. Her fighting spirit could not be hidden for any reason. She's brave, loves those in her circle and is willing to fight for them and she has a heart do beautiful she's willing to forgive.
As we follow up on the search for the Holy Grail, we follow Gunnar and his quest for the truth, his journey leads him home, back to the only woman he's ever loved though it's a love that comes with a price, I loved his spirit, though he seemed like a playboy, his devotion won me over and the realization that he needed to fight for what he wanted.
Their love story of second chances and their pursuit of what is right keeps you turning the pages.
Definitely looking forward to the next book.

Loved this 3rd offering in the Knights of Brethren series by Jody Hedlund. Jody is fast becoming one of my favourite authors and this did not disappoint.

This is a second chance love story set in the fictional land of Norvegia. Gunner (one of the Knights of Brethren) returns home as part of his mission to search for the sacred chalice. Here, Gunner reunites with Mikaela, a bondservant who “belongs” to his brother Bernhard, the evil earl. Gunnar must try to hide his feelings in order to keep her safe. However, will they be able to hold back their feelings for each other when they each venture into the dangerous forest where no one has come back or survived.

Wonderful medieval/fantasy adventure story.

Loved it.😊

Note; best read as part 3 in the Knights of Brethren series.

This is the third book in Jody Hedlund’s medieval romance series. If you haven’t read the first two yet (Enamored & Entwined), I highly recommend you read them before this one. The action in this book moves a tiny bit more slowly than the first two, but there’s still plenty of intrigue, swoony kisses, heroic men, beautiful women, and of course, villains to defeat! I enjoyed the characters and their challenges and the ways they grew and developed. I can’t wait for the next book!

One thing that I really appreciate about Jody Hedlund is that she never writes the same character twice! I had so much fun getting to know Gunnar and Mikaela. I knew there had to be something deeper hiding behind Gunnar's playboy facade in the first two books.

This story has all the perfect elements of a fantasy novel. The forbidden romance was my favorite part! Both characters grew a lot in the short time that they explored their love for each other. As it's said in the book, they truly make one another a complete. This was the third book in the Knights of Brethren series, and my favorite by far. I'm excited to learn more about the mystery of the jotunn and what Ramsey is up to with the sacred chalice in the next book.

5/5 Stars I loved it!

Jody Hedlund has crafted another sweet, thrilling, and fairytale style medieval romance in Ensnared. This story focuses on the unlikely relationship between Gunner, a knight, and Mikaela, a maid servant. They have been friends from childhood, but run in completely different circles, due to their status differences. Throughout the story their friendship blossoms into romance, as they work together to overcome the best of the forest. Although a retelling of the Holy Grail, the story focuses more on the relationship between Gunner and Mikaela than the actual story of the Holy Grail. Readers may want a bit more detail on the Holy Grail and finding the chalice part of the story, but will not be disappointed with the sweet romance. This is a story that readers will delight in.

Another great Jody book! I was disappointed at first to find that Gunnar was the main male character, because I hadn't liked him much in the previous books, but he turned out to be completely different than I expected. I thought this was a great story of being yourself and the consequences of not standing up for yourself and what's right.

I absolutely loved each one of the Knights of Brethren books. With each book that I finished, I thought to myself, "this was so good, I think it's my favorite" until I read Entrusted (Book 6) and concluded that THIS is my favorite! (this just tells you how good they all were!) Jody Hedlund is an excellent writer, with each book having its own action, suspense and 0h-so-sweet romance. It's also satisfying to see light overcome darkness and good triumph over evil. I really liked how there was connection between all the characters and Knights in each of the six books and in the final book everything ties together to a beautiful conclusion. Just delightful and captivating reading that I couldn't wait to get back to every time I put my book down.

Gunnar, who is one of the Knights of Brethren, has been introduced previously and has proven himself worthy of his status. He and Torvald are on a search for a special chalice that takes them to his home, where his evil brother is the earl. Gunnar has known Mikaela since they were children. She is a bondservant working in the castle as the nursemaid to the daughters of the earl and his wife. He had vowed to stay away from there because of his attraction to someone who could never be anything more than a childhood friend. But he had heard rumors that the chalice had been there, and he had to follow every clue if he hoped to find it. He and Mikaela sought to hide their attraction but Nanna knew and so did the man who had hoped to take Mikaela as his wife. Fortunately, Gunnar was much more successful in keeping the true nature of his mission from his brother who would have done all in his power to use Gunnar for his own evil purposes. Gunnar had become quite adept at acting as though he agreed with his brother but secretly working against him in every way possible. I love the fact that Gunnar and Mikaela are both faced with making choices that would lead to the truth. We are often faced with decisions that will set us free, or will continue to lead us away from what is best. I received an advance copy of this book from the author. This is my honest review. All opinions are strictly my own.

I actually really liked this, and I think these stories are coming into their own as fairytales now. The worldbuilding might be getting stronger, and stands out on its own.

I liked the character and the story in this one, Sir Gunnar might be one of my favourite knights of Brethren yet. Mikaela was mostly alright, but there were a couple of things about her which annoyed. me.
One thing was that she was continually going on about being a "strong, independent woman". Don't get me wrong, I don't have any issue with the concept of a strong woman, per se, but a character should not have constantly TELL you she's a "strong woman". She literally says it to another character at one point and sorry... that's just almost painful. What happened to "show, don't tell"?

There's also a scene were she says she knows another character is a "strong and independent" woman the first time she sees her. What so you can tell that just by her face...?

Mikeala's status was also kind of odd. In one of the early chapters, narrated from her perspective, she says she's some kind of peasant/bond servant, but not a slave. Later on though, Gunnar and others call her a slave. They just suddenly decided she was one, and has to "purchase" her freedom. What changed, and do they understand what slavery entails?

Overall I'd recommend for all lovers of Fairytale Retellings and YA Type stories. I'll certainly be reading the rest of the novels in this series.

This was a wonderful third book in the Knights of Brethren Series by Jody Hedlund!
The search for the Sacred Chalice takes Gunnar and Tovald to Romsdal, Gunnar’s homeplace. It is the only thing that may cure Queen’s Lisbeth deadly bleeding disease, and they will do anything in their power to get it. But staying in Likness Castle means seeing Mikaela again, the beautiful maidservant he’s in love with. And the same one he rejected years ago in order to keep her safe from his evil brother, the master of the Castle. Mikaela will never fall again for Gunnar’s charms. She’d rather have the steady love of Frans, even if she can’t love him as she loved Gunnar. But will her heart be content with this? Seeing Gunnar only frees once more all her contained feelings, and when she realizes it may be much more than attraction but a true love that may last a lifetime, it may already be too late, as Gunnar immerses in the cursed forest where nobody has ever come out alive.
I’m truly enjoying these Medieval YA Romances. I like that it has a captivating plot -danger, adventure, intrigue and an impossible love match- that kept me engaged in what will happen next page with page! The love story was very sweet and the best of all was the character development. They felt realistic and relatable. Gunnar was a swooning hero, easy to fall in love with: charming, witty, with sense of humor, yet very loyal and protective. Ready to sacrifice with anything -even his own heart- for the woman he loves and the good of his people in the Kingdom. Mikaela was strong, determined, sacrificial, with a thirst for justice, but with a very compassionate heart. Willing to pass hunger in order to get more food to her family. She wasn’t afraid to risk her life for others. There was a faith inspired message in the story about trusting God in the most difficult circumstances and trusting His faithfulness over anything else. And you can see pretty well what true love is about, thinking about the other’s happiness and well-being over your own self.
This is a beautiful inspiring novel. There were things to learn even from the secondary characters too, like Nana and her selflessness or Franz’s loyal heart, and Gunnar’s little nieces were so cute! I’m also hoping to see Torvald’s story told very soon!
I definitely recommend this book to Medieval Romance lovers! A must read!

Ensnared
Knights of Brethren #3
By Jody Hedlund

Mikaela has been a bondservant all her life, having been born into it as were her parents and grandparents. Her days are spent caring for the young daughters of the Earl of Likness. But life isn't easy with little food and even less to share with her family. The Earl is a cruel, harsh taskmaster whose only pleasure seems to be in enacting unjust punishments on his servants for crimes he falsely lays at their feet.

Due to the Earl's indifference to his daughters, Mikaela has managed to go undetected in his household. But her growing desire to seek justice for the suffering of her friends and family is sure to bring her to his attention.

Gunnar has had to hide his feelings for Mikaela. His brother would surely use her to bring him under his control. But in so doing he broke the heart of the only woman he has ever loved. Coming home to search for the sacred chalice that could potentially save the life of the Queen will come with both a blessing and a curse - allowing him an excuse to see Mikaela.

When rumors point to a dangerous and foreboding forest, Gunnar knows that there must be more to the whispers than mere stories based on unfounded fears. But can he find what he seeks while avoiding the danger that could cost him his life and keeping Miaela safe from his brother's manipulations?

This is the third book in the Knights of Brethren series and it picks up the story that finds the kingdom on the verge of war with the queen's future and very life in danger because of a curse that is passed from mother to first-born daughter. Time is short in a search for a cure to save the queen and the kingdom from those who would seek to take the throne by force. I have to be honest I was so disappointed when the book ended because I wanted more. And there is a teaser for book four that fortunately will release very soon.

This is one series that you absolutely have to read in order. So be sure to get Ensnared and Entwined before reading Ensnared. You need the backstory to fully understand what is going on and the urgency of the Knights of Brethren's quests.

I was provided a complimentary copy of the book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion ~ all thoughts expressed are my own.

“I believe one act of courage has the power to clear the path for more.”

I couldn’t wait to dive into my copy of Ensnared- Jody Hedlund’s third installment in the Knights of Brethren series! Gunnar is a elite knight charged with finding an ancient chalice that is said will heal the queen. Clues lead him home, where his older brother rules over his earldom with an iron fist, power-hungry and ambitious. Does he know more about the chalice than he says? Nursemaid to his daughters is Mikaela, Gunnar’s childhood friend and longtime keeper of his heart, despite his efforts to disguise his feelings in order to protect her from his brother. Mikaela, practically a slave, has a courageous heart and longs to make a difference. Her world turns upside down when Gunnar re-enters it. He’s broken her heart before- can she trust him with it this time? Can Gunnar and Mikaela together overcome the dangers of the forest and find the chalice? Or will they just find more than they bargained for?

Ensnared mixes action-filled medieval fiction with sweet romance and just a little bit of fantasy. This series is loosely based on the Knights of the Round Table and this is the search for the Holy Grail. Gunnar is an absolute sweetheart- but he has to hide behind a playboy façade to protect Mikaela. If anyone were to see how deep his feelings go, she would be in terrible danger. Mikaela doesn’t see past what he wants her to see at first. But her heart pulls her back to Gunnar anyway. I loved both of their characters. Their chemistry and backstory were irresistible.

I always appreciate the lessons Jody weaves into her YA books, from subtle messages of faith to important truths. The focus here lies in courage- standing up for what’s right even when it’s hard. For doing the hard thing, even in danger. Courage to protect the ones we love no matter the cost. And there’s also this lovely gem tucked deep in the forest chapters:

“Perhaps that was how it always was- we tended to focus on the outward appearances of people and miss the true beauty of their character as a result.”

I won’t risk spoiling the story by discussing this in more depth, but let me just say this is one of the best parts of the story for me.

Not quite a cliffhanger, but Book 3 definitely leaves me wanting Book 4 immediately! They are definitely best read in order as the overarching story is important.

I recommend Entwined for middle readers (as long as they’re ok with some kisses, cruelty at the hands of a villain, a bit of medieval violence, and references to a bleeding curse) all the way up to grandparents! There’s a little something for everyone who picks up a Jody Hedlund book!

I received a complementary copy of this book from the author. My opinions are my own and I was not asked to leave a positive review.
