Jacky Leon #5

Shades of Hate

Rate this book
I live a happy life. I have a lover that I am quickly falling for. I have friends and family that rely on me to keep my territory safe and secure for them. My bar’s business is booming.

But I’ve made enemies, some that I know and some that I don’t. Hate for me and the life I’m building is creeping in the darkness.

Hate can be insidious. It can stain the purest of hearts and fog the sharpest of minds. It can come from the most unlikely of places. It can show up behind a smile just as easily as at the end of the barrel of a gun. It comes in many shades, coloring the way people see the world and each other.

My name is Jacky Leon. I’m a werecat, a daughter of Hasan. I’ve fought for what I believe in and will do so until my last breath but…

Everything I’ve built is being threatened and I didn’t see it coming.

I love this series and these characters, and I loved this book, but it felt a little bit like a bridge taking us into the next book. Couple things that stand out to me though:

1 - I loooooove seeing Heath and Jacky's relationship continue to evolve, and seeing how stable and supportive it is. These two are the perfect counterbalance for each other.

2 - holy shit I may die of anxiety waiting for the news of them to come out

3 - fuck Davor, he is literally trash

4 -

5 - teen angst bitchy Carey was not my favorite

6 - no seriously, fuck Davor. And I'm mad at the rest of them for letting Davor get away with his shit

7 - except Zuri. I love her, and her scenes with Jacky gave me all the feels. Seriously, the spine of this series is the relationship with Hasan and his children, and I love watching it evolve. Except Davor, fuck him.

8 - the werewolves need to get taken down about 10 pegs, because book after book has made it clear that they feel they are above the law, and their society is a dumpster fire the size of Mt. Saint Helens. They need an epic beatdown, so they stop thinking they can walk all over everyone like they tried to do in the end of this book. I mean a large scale, absolutely epic smackdown that makes them check their ego.

9 - ❤️ Landon and Dirk. #fetch

10 - fuck Davor and his monstrous behavior. The only individual more in need of a beatdown than him is Callahan. But seriously, why hasn't Hasan or Jabari beaten his ass yet?

Gimme the next! *grabby hands*

On this re-read, after Secrets and Ruin, I don't disagree with my original review at all. But I'll say point 8 from the above list is my strongest feeling right now. How are the werewolves not in serious shit, with the whole Tribunal lined up against them, for everything that happened in this book?

This is fifth in a UF series and lots of story and character arcs persist from book to book. Definitely read in order. They share a world with the Kaliya Sahni series and they proceed in publication order, so I tend to follow both based on that. Kaliya is a very different feel, though, and they aren't interdependent at all.

By this point, you have a good idea of what to expect with Jacky. This one differs in being much more home-bound. Jacky only leaves her territory once and returns nearly immediately. Which also means it's a lot more homey, and I liked that more than a little.

It is a bit of a change in pace. A lot less dire and a lot fewer dustups with other supernaturals. The plot is good and the pace extremely good. So don't take that to mean that this is boring in any way. It's not. But it is a lot lower on the threat scale.

I actually like that Banet could do this change in pace and still keep it so engaging. So I'm going with all five stars. I particularly liked homefront developments (with Heath and Carey) and with Jacky's family. Good stuff.

A note about Chaste: Heath and Jacky are involved. In that way. And we see some intimate moments of comfort. But there's no on-page sex and nothing explicit in the story. There is some shifter-related nakedness, but no steam. I consider that pretty chaste, but it could drift for others.

I have a bad habit of forgetting to review the books I read, Oops 😬.
Anyways another wonderful addition to the series, KN Banet is becoming one of my favorite authors! I love that we see growth in all the characters and that we see the good and bad sides of each of them.
Except for Davor, he sucks....(I hope that’s the right sibling, there are so many of them I get confused lol)

This was really, really good and an unquestionable 5 stars for me.

Ibfont want to give too much away regarding plot, as its pretty much breakneck speed of revelations from start to finish. I will say that the conflict in this book is of a far more personal nature and much closer to him and that gave it a nice change of pace. I was literally 65% through when I looked down at how much I had read for the first time and couldn't believe how much I can devoured in one go, feeling like no time had passed.

5hia book has all of the great hallmarks of a classic Banet series and I loved seeing Jacky and Heath as a couple.

So kudos to Kristen Banet as she's done it again. Just bloody brilliant Urban Fantasy.

Her secret is out. Jacky has somehow managed to get caught on camera in her werecat form and now government agencies are sniffing around trying to interview her and find out what she is. Even worse, her werewolf boyfriend is in the frame which could reignite animosities that have been simmering for centuries.

Adding to her woes, someone is taking silver tainted pot-shots at her. Even if she survives the assassins and special agents, she faces an uncertain future with her own kind.

Book 5 in the Jacky Leon series has her moving further away from the peaceful life she envisioned for herself. She always does the right thing and unfortunately that character flaw (?) well and truly puts her in the spotlight.

I loved this book. In some ways it's a smaller story than the previous books and it's better for it. Honestly that's what I loved the most about Shades of Hate.

Someone purposely named Jacky so the Bureau of Supernaturals came sniffing at her door. With her on video changing into a werecat, there was no way out but to deal with the BSA. Jacky is again in trouble with her werecat family. I can now understand the frustration with her werecat family with her. Except for Davor who is an a**hole. I just don't get why Jacky didn't trust her instinct. I mean, she's a supernatural and felt something was off but just shrugged it off. We also found out what really happened to her sister, Liza, a century ago. With all of them grieving for a century. I am still liking this series. I like Jacky and Heath although sometimes I can't understand Jacky's reasoning.

In Shades of Hate, Jacky's being tested in many different ways. For many years she was someone who lived a quiet, "ordinary" life, now the changes are coming a very rapid pace.
They saw my truth, and they were going to have it forever. My privacy had been ripped away from me, and there was nothing that could get it back.
The biggest change - werecats are outed. Her family continues to wonder how she went from being uncharacteristically uninvolved to constantly in the middle of every mess. Their feelings for her, as a member of their family, are revealed more and more in each installment and it's a joy to watch her shock as she realizes they truly are there for her, no matter what. Her circle continues to grow, all of which is helping her take charge of her new position and her feelings.

I'm thrilled I went back to book 2 because this series has become one of my must-buys. While Jacky may seem lost at times, she's always ready to do what's right no matter the blowback. And, if there is blowback, she takes responsibility and stands her ground. I'm very anxious for the next big "coming out party" that is bound to happen sooner rather than later. Zuri's part in this installment made me like her all the more. I recommend this series to all UF (+some romance) fans. July can't get here soon enough ~ I want Royal Pawn now!

Yes! Another Jacky Leon book. This is one of my favorite ongoing series. I love Jacky, tough but a generous heart. She will live by her own code, even if it kills her and goes against all other "normal" standards.

Jacky stays home in this book but that doesn't mean there aren't a lot of revelations, action and time for a little loving (safe for work). Heath and Jacky get to have some time as a couple, even if they have to hide it from most people. Her relationship with her werecat family continues to evolve with some big changes for the family.

I didn't enjoy this quite as much as the others in the series but it still was a great read. It felt like the end of an arc and the next book will be the beginning of another. For at the end of this book, Jacky's life truly has changed and it will never be like it was before.

Can't wait for the next! Go read. It really is a great series.

I Somehow Missed The Release of This Book

But it was honestly for the best as I now have less time to wait for book 6.
This book was as great as the previous 4 with lovely moments between Heath and Jackie and the supernatural stakes rising ever higher. I love watching Jackie navigate her family as they grow closer and more histories are revealed. Her relationship with Zuri, in particular, is beautiful though I appreciate the protectiveness and love Hasan and some of the other siblings show as well. I can’t decide how I feel about Daver. He’s an a-hole, but I did also understand the reason why. And I wonder if things will be changing after that ending.
There were other relationships that developed further, like Jackie and Dirk and it was a nice counterpoint to the seeming nonstop movement of this book (which I’m not complaining about at all). I can’t wait for the next book, for the secrets I know will be revealed, and to watch the aftermath of the ones already presented in this book.
I saw that this book was 5 of 6 on Amazon and I am strongly hoping that this doesn’t mean that the next book will be the last. I enjoy the world that the author has created. And while I know that there are other series in this world, I like Jackie and want her story to continue.

More drama for Jacky

Another attempt on her life and Jacky now has to deal with the Us Government being involved. Are they the ones who put her life at risk or was it her own actions in previous books. This is another good werecat drama but she’s super clueless for being a 39 year old adult who has been a supernatural for over a decade. She also still has all the family drama and distrust and hurt that she has in eeeeevery book. While it adds some extra layers of complexity I felt like she should have grown more by book 5. She’s slightly more confident and formidable but still nurses the same old hurts and distrust. It’s not to say I didn’t enjoy the book, because I do, but the growth of Jacky is super slow. I will still read the next one because I enjoy a lot of the other character dynamics in the world - and sometimes the main character isn’t always your favorite but a side character can make up for it.

Man I can't say enough about this series, I literally stop my life every time an book for Jacky comes out and devour every single word. This world, plot, story, characters is all so well written, its crazy. Jacky is one my favorite FMC of all time, I love the growth and progression of Heath and Jacky together, even Carey watching her going through teenage drama and emotional outbursts, just makes me love them even more. My favorite thing though is Hasan and his children, and there ever growing family relationship, each one brings something so different to the table and I love it all. If you haven't started this series yet, I don't know why, I'm 100% positive you will adore every minute!!!! I will be anxiously awaiting, Royal Pawn in July!!

Everything I feel about this fabulous series, I think I’ve already said in previous installments. Suffice it to say - I’ve read the first five installments in just a week! That’s how addictive this series is!

In this book, Jacky is finally coming into and is comfortable with who she is and who she loves. Yet, she is still just as determined to do what she feels is right, even if it clashes with the laws and other’s opinions. Her relationship with Heath is steadily deepening and is one of the main reasons I love this series so much. Overall, the story keeps one glued to the pages and the characters grip the heart. This series is truly the reason I read!

Today is the third of June and I initially started reading the first book in the Jacky Leon series on June first. Since then I have gobbled down four additional books in the series and now I am anxiously awaiting book 6 which will be released in July. I’m writing all of this to make you aware of just how amazing this series is. I haven’t been able to put it down since I started it.

In book 5, “Shades of Hate” someone has leaked Jacky’s name to the BSA (Bureau of Supernatural Authority). When two agents, Miller and Collins, come sniffing around they show her a video of her changing on the full moon. They give her 48 hours to agree to reveal all about her species. She is devastated.

As Jacky consults her family regarding the situation, she is informed that Zuri has been out of contact with their mother Subira. No one seems to be able to get in contact with her. Jacky realizes that she will negotiate with the BSA agents, letting them know that she is the head of the North American werecats and the only name they will receive. The family doesn’t like it but they know she is making the right move. Heath is none too pleased about the situation but does what he does best, support Jacky.

Meanwhile Jacky finally gets a call from Zuri and discovers she has been holding out a secret from her family and boy is it a big one. Jacky also gets to meet Subira during a video chat. It seems Zuri also knows that Jacky and Heath are in love. Oh boy!

Once the negotiations with the BSA begins Jacky is run off the road and shot by a silver bullet by what appears to be human zealots. She manages to make it to Heath’s house where she plan to tell him about Zuri’s revelation. Carey is finally told about their relationship and she blows a gasket.

At first Jacky believes the BSA has leaked her information but when a second attempt on her life is made in front of Carey, she develops a different theory. Now it is imperative she discovers who is behind these attacks and the answer will also provide an opportunity for the Hassan pride to right a wrong.

This was an emotional heartbreaking read for so many reasons including the disappointment Carey experienced after being lied two by the two people she trusts the most and the real possibility Jacky and Heath’s relationship will be revealed. Yet, amid all of the turmoil there are moments of great joy and hope. I for one cannot wait until the next adventure to see how it all turns out. After a three day reading fest, July can’t get here soon enough!!!!

Have you ever read an Urban Fantasy series that sucks you in, each and every time? That is Jacky Leon to me, well - the entire Tribunal Universe (As I am a heavy fan of Kaylia). This series is growing more complex with each installment, with superb character growth, revelations, and action - not to mention a forbidden romance that both titillates and charms.

Unfortunately, many Supes live long and have equally long memories - and those memories breed emotions that have only stewed and grown as the years have gone by. Jacky, as the youngest of Hasan's children, is arguably the most vulnerable, a fact that is well known in the Supernatural community. That facet, along with the build-up from previous novels, sets the stage for this explosive installment, one that not only shakes the foundation of Jacky's Werecat life but exposes secrets EVERYONE would rather remain hidden.

Honestly, this is a great addition to the series. Heath and Hacky's relationship grows closer (and more dangerous), while the inner dynamics of Jacky's werecat family is showcased a bit more - along with several secrets that could shake the family's future. The past comes crawling back, and the humans - those pesky, intrusive humans - make a play that devastates even as it sets the stage for the books in the series.

All in all, it's a must-read in this Universe - exciting, action-packed, hot, and a bit sad. I loved it.

Perspective:
First Person, Single POV

Ending Type:
Continuation

Rating:
Adult

Romantic Dynamic:
M/F

Character Age Range:
Adult

My Final Verdict on Shades of Hate:

This expanding Universe just keeps getting better. Jacky and Heath are two amazing characters with a dynamic that works, despite the challenges placed in their way. The world is lush and the side characters don't act like side characters, as each is equally flush and faceted. A great read in a great series

The danger of exposure

One thing I love about Jacky Leon is she has her own code to live by and she does so unapologetically. That is constant through all her books, and I love these books because of it In past books, it has great to see her embrace her were family. The constant action has given us glimpses of her siblings, which has only enhanced her story. We have learned to understand her love for her older brother Jabari, and how she appreciates the way he looks out for the others. We have seen her understanding of Hisao alienation and loneliness because of the mantle he has taken up for his family. These books have shown us her affinity to Niko and his greatest wish for peace between the wolves and cats and Mischa's devotion to a village dedicated to her once loved child. In this book, there is no racing off across the country or across the world to handle a crisis. Everything takes place right in her own backyard. In this novel, we get to see Jacky with the other family she has, the one she has built herself with Heath and Dirk, Oliver and Landon, and most of all, Carey. Its great to see her in her element, and not in some foreign place in a life or death situation where the odds are not in her favor.

The only issue I had with this book may not be an issue at all, just my cynicism rearing its ugly head. I don't see a government agency holding out an olive branch just for information. I tend to see them more wanting to control it or use it to their advantage. Humans have a history of attacking or killing what they fear or do not understand or know, with a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later so to speak. This relationship was a driving force in the later part of the book, however, and wouldn't have worked any other way.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable read.

Wow didn't review on first read. And actually am 2 books ahead now on my reread so forgot to mark it read.

I actually liked this better on reread. I think I was so made and her privacy being totally crapped on and it takes so long for someone to mention it. I was so mad at these trespassers. Now Jacky's secret is out and it is all control and damage control, until we get to the attempts on her life and it getting back to a big secret and then the confronting of the culprits leads to future repercussions for Jacky though at the end we think maybe all will be fine. This was great.

Dat was soms even slikken... Daarnaast blijf ik het verhaal origineel vinden en heb ik niet het idee dat er steeds hetzelfde gebeurt.

Life is coming a bit fast at Jacky in this one. First off her property was invaded, the government has found out about werecats, her relationship with Heath is becoming more open, odd people are coming after Jacky and yet again her family (or certain parts of them) are testing her. One or two of these things would be enough to deal with, but all of them. Jacky seems to be running from one problem to the next. Along the way she finds out some great things, Oliver and Dirk are firmly in her court, Carey can act like a snotty teen, then realize who wrong she is and apologize, maybe the government isn't so bad, yes one sibling needs to be dealt with, but others are firmly on her side, going so far as to share their own secret and in the end, Hassin will always have Jacky's back, even as he gives her space to deal with thing. Jacky in turn let Hassin and the rest of them know she has their back, by helping heal an old hurt. And Heath...well he will be right beside Jacky's side for as long as she lets him.

If I had a word to sum up the entire way that K N Banet writes it would be: Tension... or suspense? Either way, I felt like I was on the edge of my seat the entire time through this book. I feel like there is a clever art to being able to keep me that engaged today.
Sometimes I get so easily distracted by life and the internet but I was 100% Focused and absorbed by this mystery.

What I thought was very interesting in this particular book were the parallels of real-life atm. It got to me a little bit, to be honest, felt a little too real at times. Being hated for no reason, that's some deep you know what. This book felt more about a slower plot action-wise (like chases and intercontinental journeys and stuff) and not the fast action of the previous which I'm a little more into but I still really enjoyed this book.

I am living for the budding relationship between Jacky and Heath. tbh I would have liked a little bit more heat but this is urban fantasy not strictly romance after all and I can begrudgingly accept that. We're here more for the deep emotional bond these two will work on. Really would love Jacky to let him in just a wee lil bit more.

Once again every book in this world adds just a little bit more depth. Love those crossover mentions and I will be bringing them up in the Facebook Spoiler event! haha

Jacky of the werecats

I love this series, and I'll be honest it might not be for everyone. This is a series that seems as if it will never end. But let's be honest, do we even want it to? No! I could read this all day everyday. Jacky's life is so freaking crazy! I swear this chick has more drama and life threatening issues then a novella. But that's what I love! It's not just some random filler, each book is packed with it's own drama and conflict, and its also wrapped up within each book. I honestly don't get tired of reading her adventures! I just want more!.. I know, but the characters in this book just grab you, all of them. I'm happy and excited for another book, if it never had to end, I'll be just fine with the outcome.

This story livened up as it developed, but for a big chunk of the book it felt like it was repeatedly going over the same ground. Also I’m not sure what was behind including Carey’s burst of teenage angst, as the author pretty much forgot about her for the rest of the book.
Overall it was a better story than the previous book and if possible I would have given 3.5 stars.

Jacky identity has a werecat has been compromised. Someone leaked what she was and now humans are hunting her. Jacky has to meddle in politics to make sure that the BSA doesn't interfere much with her people and also finding out who is leading the hunters to her because she's not the prey... she's the predator.

I cannot wait to read next book. I've been immersed in this series since page 1 of book 1, and I cannot wait to see how it continues.
