This book was eye-opening about the life of a person with schizophrenia.
I had no idea everything a family of a person with schizophrenia has to endure on a daily basis. I knew it was terrible, but I never could’ve imagined how life-altering this disability is. This mom’s pain was unbearable, yet she kept fighting day after day. She wanted the best for her daughter and continuously prayed that God would remove the disability. Most people probably don’t know how debilitating schizophrenia is, but I’m glad I read this excellent book. I’ve learned so much, and I will never look at someone who has a disability the same again. Thank you, J Mark Stacy, for sharing your story. May God bless you every day as you fight your ongoing battle for your daughter.

This is the harrowing story of a mother’s undying, unconditional, fierce love for her family. Even as schizophrenia and addiction steal her daughters, she doesn’t give up…ever. I know this family. I have since junior high, four and a half decades ago. I.Had.No.Idea. the tremendous mountains they climb. (Present tense) My utmost admiration for the author, who I know least in the family, for her resilience, willingness to shout to the rafters for her daughter when the “gap” was revealed time after time after time, and relentless advocacy when the answers simply are not there.

Raising children takes a strong will, flexibility, and a love like no other. No one can predict the paths our children will take or what circumstances they may find themselves as they grow, change, and have experiences without us by their sides. We would like to think, as parents, that we know our children and have everything under control. Life, however, makes plans that are often very different from our own. J. Mark Stacy is no stranger to the hardships of raising children. Stacy’s daughters are battling both drug addiction and the beast known as schizophrenia.

A Schizophrenic, Tapped & Skipped: Hope in the Midst of Madness, by J. Mark Stacy, is the no-holds-barred true story of one woman’s battle to remain hopeful in the face of overwhelming pain, fear, and utter destruction. When her daughter begins to show signs of schizophrenia as a teenager, their devastating journey begins. In addition to the battle with a crippling mental illness, the family must find a way to fight back against drug addiction.

Stacy’s book left me speechless. Her writing is raw; she holds nothing back as she shares her family’s story. From her initial shock to her own breakdowns, Stacy does not hesitate to tell readers how incredibly painful her daughters’ battles have been for everyone involved. Her work brings much-needed light to the struggle to treat mental illness and drug addiction. Prior to reading Stacy’s story, I had no idea how incredibly difficult it is for young adults battling debilitating schizophrenia to seek help from facilities. It goes without saying that Stacy’s book will be instrumental in changing the way mental illness and drug addiction are viewed by those of us who have never dealt with it firsthand.

Faith plays a huge part in the way Stacy is able to care for both of her daughters. As the years pass, readers see exactly how much she relies on her faith to do everything from simply riding in a car with her daughter to leaving her to live on her own. Stacy is able to give readers hope through her experiences, as crushing as they may seem.

The heart and soul that has been poured into this work is simply phenomenal. I highly recommend A Schizophrenic, Tapped & Skipped: Hope in the Midst of Madness to any family battling drug addiction or the effects of mental illness. Stacy is an ally who offers a revealing picture of her life while at the same time showing readers that hope does, indeed, exist.

Dancing and Tapping

As a registered nurse, I know about addiction and mental health disabilities. Ms Stacy has written a compelling memoir. This book must have been hard to write as most memoirs with persons struggling are usually that way. Tough love is hard, and that's an understatement. But it must be done so that addicts can reach rock bottom, and then, slowly climb out of the hell they go through. Addiction is simply that way. Schizophrenia usually shows up in late teen years or in one's 20s. Schizophrenia is difficult to treat, keep on meds, shelters to stay, and agencies to apply at only to be turned down by most. Sadly, the picture Stacy paints with Marissa, is the actual reality. Having the courage to write this book is enough for five stars, thus that is my rating. However, the grammar, punctuation, and formatting was done poorly by those the author credits. Please know this book will open your eyes to another world if you can get past the issues in the narrative. I did, and I'm glad I read this book.

I had a hard time getting over the authors irony of not seeing herself as an alcoholic. News flash, if you NEED to drink beer each day to deal and get by you have an alcohol problem. Yet, your daughter is a druggie and you couldn’t see the correlation with your alcoholism and her drug use, mind blowing to say the least. Then to carry on and on about how big bad scary the city is and how you have a gun and continue on and on about owning a gun. My goodness women you seem like you might have your own mental health issues that need to be addressed.

True powerful story of a mother’s strength and love

This is raw, real, scary, hopeful….I couldn’t put down. Not knowing myself what a family can go through with mental illness and drug addiction I am amazed by the strength this mom has. Very honest. A must read for today’s world…hope for those going through this and enlightenment for others. Thank you for sharing and prayers for you and your family!

A guide to understanding

A terrifying story but the knowledgeable mother of a schizophrenic daughter details the heartbreak of the world’s lack of understanding of mental illness. As a friend of a couple with a similar situation, this book was so helpful in seeing their frustration and endless fear for their daughter’s welfare. It gives me a better perspective into their daily struggles and the fear of the future for both themselves and their daughter.

Tapped & Skipped

This was a hard one to read but very eye opening. The struggles that this mother and family have had to go through is unbelievable. It is completely unacceptable that there is not more help out there for people in this situation. The gap in this is really unfair. I hope that this family can finally get some peace.

This really opened my eyes to this disease more. I would have never known how hard it is to find help.

Touching, full of heartbreak and hope

Such a difficult story to live and to share. Their has been a terrible stigma associated with mental illness. Those of us that suffer or know and love someone with a mental illness can attest to the broken system. Thank God improvements are slowly being made. Thank you for sharing your experience. God bless your Family!

This book was written by a friend from high school. She wrote about her middle daughter, who is schizophrenic, and what she has gone through to get her the help she needs. At times, it is very heartbreaking to read the lengths she had to go to keep her daughter alive. I commend her for the strength it took to get her daughter to the point she is currently.
