James Trevor "Jamie" Oliver, sometimes known as The Naked Chef, is an English chef and media personality well known for his growing list of food-focused television shows, his more recent roles in campaigning against the use of processed foods in national schools, and his campaign to change unhealthy diets and poor cooking habits for the better across the United Kingdom.
I'm a big fan of Jamie Oliver. He's really down to earth and has a bit of charm. I started watching him many, many years ago with his first TV show on the BBC - The Naked Chef. I really liked him and have since watched many of his shows and checked out many of his cookbooks. I thought this one is fitting for the time of year. It's a huge book, with lots of different types of recipes. Crazy recipes (well, to me...such as turkey sloppy joes), traditional British recipes (yorkshire puddings, triffle, etc), and just some fun, inventive ones. Chapters include:
Introduction Smart Starters The Main Event Veggie and Vegan Plates The Wonderful World of Potatoes Scrumptious Vegetables Gravy, Sauces and all the Trimmings Incredible Leftovers Spectacular Festive Puddings Afternoon Tea and Sweet Treats Cute Edible Gifts Super-Fantastic Salads Dips, Bites and Handheld Nibbles Perfect Christmas Drinks Guide To Roasting Meat
There are so many different types of recipes from easy to complicated. A big dessert section which is a bonus for me. Lots and lots of drool worthy food porn, I think every recipe has a picture, even the gravy recipes. But I have to knock it a star as there are too many photos of him. (cookbook authors, please stop doing this) I doubt I would make much from this one...being vegan and all (lot of meat recipes). But I get ideas from it. I have a few I have marked to try and tweak a bit. I liked the food gift section as it's nice to give these types of gifts to the person who has everything. I plan on testing his hot cocoa mix to see if it rivals the one I make, but first I must figure out what the heck one of the ingredients is. Ha!
A great one to checkout if you want to get some ideas for a huge, festive holiday meal, if you want inventive ways to re-use turkey, or you just want to see a bunch of gorgeous food photos.
What a lovely Christmas Cookbook! I’m going to have to buy this one and add it to my Christmas Cooking shelf! By the way… anyone else starting to think about Christmas and starting to plan for it? It’s only August I know!!🎄🤶🏻🎄
Great book, lovely recipes which are not difficult to make. This is a book which not only looks at Christmas day recipes but recipes for the whole of December. My only negative suggestion about the book, I had hoped for a spectacular Christmas Cake recipe. As Jamie is not a fan of CC, his recipe in this book leaves a lot to be desired. Great ideas and very nicely presented. Recommended.
It's nice to see the excitement Jamie feels for creating food (and drinks), hos appreciation of Christmas, and a whole lot of ideas for festive meals. I'm the opposite of a foodie, and with my family's allergies, intolerances, tastes and preferences, it's always difficult to find something to try but I think we'll give some of these a go. It would be nice to have more than 1 or 2 veggie dishes without squash, and the nutrients looked to good to be true for 100 gramms, turns out, they were for servings. Sometimes, we need ingredients not as easily accessible here, other times it just looked too complicated. Still, the enthusiasm is so contagious, we'll definitely try some of these. My all-time favourite pizza dough is from Jamie Oliver, and he cares about the nutritional value, so I trust these will be good.
Very vibrant with tons of pictures and lots of enthusiasm. Only downside (as with his other books) is this man loves expensive and hard to find ingredients. But of course he has other books with more frugal menus.. but still a few tricky ads-ins. And you can't really be a beginner chef for this one. Some recipes don't have step by step instructions so a lot is assumed that you know what you're doing.
I really like Jamie Oliver's Christmas cooking programmes, and watch the repeats on Food Network, so as soon as I saw this I knew I had to buy it. I did. It is filled with lots of great recipes, foodie gift ideas, and your starter kit to the "perfect" Christmas. Plus an amazing Hot Chocolate recipe.
Borrowed from library and have already ordered it to keep. I can see me using recipes after Christmas and the vegetarian food looks delicious (which is very rare for Christmas food). The roasting meat guide in the back is worth getting it alone (and the drinks too!). Jamie does it again, a knockout.
I really appreciate the way that Jamie is respectful to traditional English holiday cooking. So he does many traditional Christmas dishes but also throws in a more modern one which is OK. The fact that he appreciates the old will always compensate for any newfangled recipe.
I absolutely love Jamie Oliver's Christmas cooking programmes, and watch repeats every year on Food Network. Every year I said to my husband that I wish Jamie Oliver would release a Christmas cookbook, so naturally as soon as I saw this on Amazon I preordered it in a flash.
I'm not disappointed. This book is wonderful, filled with all the tv recipes and more. There's so much to love here- meat, cakes, potatoes, what to do with leftovers, that gravy he makes with Jools and the baby, the ice cream bombe, THAT hot chocolate recipe, vegetarian dishes, puddings, drinks... I'm so pleased with this book and it was definitely worth the wait. Jamie has pride of place on my kitchen shelves once again, this time next to Nigella's Christmas and my grandma's old Delia Smith Christmas book.
This book is pretty much what you would expect from Jamie Oliver. Some great recipes in here that I hadn't seen since my childhood. Accessible and not hard for the casual cook to achieve.
A great cook book for all your Christmas basics covering every part of the Christmas dinner from starters right through to desserts. It has plenty of Turkey alternatives for other-meat-lovers and also a full section on vegan and vegetarian options for non-meat lovers (this is great for me as a few members of my family are vegetarian). It also has sections on sides, sauces and drinks which I think are just as important as the main courses. As usual, Jamie shows you how to use any leftovers to create some pretty tasty meals the next day (I don’t like waste so this is great). There’s also a pretty cool section on edible gifts (I’ve never tried these recipes, if I did I’d probably eat all the ‘gifts’ before I could even think about wrapping them).
Some of the stand out recipes for me include the Turkey Wellington (you’ll never go back to plain old Turkey, though we still like to do both), Get Ahead Gravy (a real time saver but admittedly not as good as gravy from the Turkey juices so I still prefer that if I have time on the big day) and Jamie and Gennaro’s Porchetta (though I still prefer Gennaro’s own recipe which is fabulous).
It features a very handy guide to roasting all meats at the back - crucial as nobody wants undercooked Turkey!
I have every one of Jamie Oliver's cookbooks and have been to a few demonstrations too, he's a great chef and tries to make it easy (see his tv programmes!!) to cook dishes which are not only tasty but look good too. This book is no exception, I bought the kindle version as I couldn't afford the book itself, even the kindle version has 686 pages!!! It's subdivided into numerous pages and all of them are in full colour, something which I really do appreciate I like to see what I'm supposed to be ending up with. There are too many chapters to list but he's got the full version of christmas covered on a plate. My only suggestion is that I would have liked suggestions for say cocktails those of us who don't drink please! I have already written down what I'm intending to cook, just two of us to cook for and my daughter is vegetarian so much appreciated the veggie choices! All I have to do now is go out and shop for the ingredients (think will send daughter out to get those while I make the cake-y things).
Thanks Jamie for a great christmas cookbook, think I will buy it for my air fryer cooking sister, will need an air fryer version though, just saying...
I was so excited to find out that I won a signed copy (eeeeeeee!!!!!) of Jamie Oliver's Christmas Cookbook in a Goodreads giveaway! Jamie's been on the food scene for a long time, but, honestly, I am not particularly a "foodie" so my introduction to him was on Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution. I loved it, and liked his style, so I'm definitely a fan.
I love this book. Visually, it is beautiful. The photos are amazing and festive and there are so many recipes I want to try. I'll probably start with a potato dish to build my confidence - because there's a whole chapter for potato dishes! From "Smart Starters" to "Incredible Leftovers" and "Cute Edible Gifts," he's covered a lot in this book. It's a great source of information, tips and tricks - and the instructions are clear. His easy, conversational style comes through on every page, and I really think I COULD make any one of his recipes. I am thrilled to own this book because I certainly plan to use it not only this year, but for years to come.
Found on our local libraries Christmas display. The recipes are quite simple and traditional, if you eat mainly meat this would probably be a useful book, it's also fairly basic. The vegetarian and vegan options are boring, nut roast, roasted celeriac, squash soup. There's a section on vegetables that has some interesting slight variants. Roasted parsnips with a ground almond coating, glazed carrots, maris pipers with crushed garlic... slight variants of what you might cook anyway but this gave some interesting ideas and variations. There is also a chapter for drinks and cocktails, have made a note of a few things to try from this, it's due back to the library. Not one I'd buy but enjoyable to pick up a few new ideas from
I won this book on goodreads and it's a signed copy as well...oh the recipes just look delicious !!!! I cant wait to try them.. there are many items that I haven't heard of but I will try them and my mom also it's a Christmas gift for her she loves cookbooks and watching Jamie Oliver on t.v.. this will be a plus for her. Thanks Good Reads .... Melinda
".Baked bread sauce, and more." I have enjoyed Jamie Oliver's T.V. Programs since first he rode his scooter onto the screen in the Naked Chef, and bought the cookbooks, too. Whilst fun to read, these latter have always been a disappointment as far as the recipes are concerned. Now, with this Christmas book, he has provided good, basic instructions which produce the great tastes expected, inc!using veggie and vegan alternatives. Not I spirational, but a good working cookbook with fine illustrations. Recommended, especially if the intention is to use it to cook recipes rather than read as a foodie adventure.
I tried a few things starting with the bacon wrapped appetizer recipes. The first time by the time the bacon crisped, the cheese component was totally melted out. The second time I lightly pre cooked the bacon before wrapping, but he the cheese still melted out, though the bacon crisped in the allotted time. I generally like Jamie's taste combos, but I pect the recipes to be tested. Is he putting out too many books? The apple pie is marvellous. I froze it unbaked. Just double the baking time.
*Review may change once I try a few of the recipes*
This cookbook is a work of art full of vibrant pictures and beautifully laid out dishes. I like how each page has a corresponding picture next to the recipe. I like to see what I’ll be cooking. 😉
The only thing I’m worried about is finding some of the ingredients but other than that I love how large and thick the book is and the wide ranges of recipes. I especially can’t wait to make the Amalfi cake.
* I won this in a Goodreads giveaway all opinions are my own. *
This is a beautifully-photographed cookbook written in a warm, friendly tone by the author.
He covers everything from appetizers to vegan dishes to delectable desserts in this volume. Another nice feature is the section on food gifts to make and give to others.
Recommended for people who love to cook and bake and eat good food!
{Note: There are a few swear words sprinkled throughout the narrative. Just so you know . . . }

Borrowed from the New Book shelf at the local public library.
Out of the 408 pages that were in this book I think that I only was interested in about three recipes. I did end up giving this to a friend so she could take a look at it and maybe get some inspiration as to what to make sure the holiday seasons for a large group of friends or family. Overall, I don’t think I’ll pick up another Jamie Oliver cookbook, simply for the fact that the recipes are outside of what I would normally serve people due to the fact that the ingredients and most of the recipes are not affordable or easily obtained.
Probably far too basic and simple for those of us who have been preparing and cooking a traditional Christmas meal for longer than we care to remember. But beautifully produced and I did make a note of a few of the more unusual recipes to try out. Could do without the endless photos of Jamie and his family to be honest. At least the font is clear and minus the ridiculous curling Gothic script font that some cookery books seem to have adopted recently.
I meant to read this about a month ago, and I’m definitely checking it out again next thanksgiving. From roasts to leftovers to gifts, Oliver makes it less intimidating and somehow fun. With full nutrition info. And tons of family pics that will put you right into the holiday spirit.
You’ve got to check this out for holiday inspiration. Oliver and his team are probably my favorite cookbook authors, and they don’t disappoint here.
A LOT of tasty sounding recipes. Many if not all had butter and oil in them. Many had coriander seeds, cumin, and chili powder, so they'll have a bit of kick. I only noticed the prevalence, because of household allergies. Nothing that can't be adjusted. There were a lot more recipes than I expected and a good number of them interested several family members, so we'll be trying them out. Beautiful photos of the item alongside each recipe. Looking forward to stretching my cooking skills.
been obsessively watching most of his tv shows the past week and this is my first jamie oliver cookbook and it chronicles much of his life through 17 years of recipes that you can make all year or around christmas time and it was so well done. i loved all the photos and it gave me a nostalgic kind of feeling for the holidays.
there weren’t many recipes i found intriguing but i was happy to look through!
Did not love this, did not hate it, it's just not my kind of Christmas. It seemed like he was competing with himself on how fancy he could get. This book is not for the Normal Chef. This book seems to be written for someone who has been to cooking school and has many advanced techniques. Would never buy this myself and I would never attempt to make anything from this.
Not a bad cookbook, but I was a little dismayed by the number of specifically English ingredients, e.g., chestnut puree, prepared mincemeat
It was *very* poorly laid out for the Kindle. The type was frequently too light; the ingredients were listed in a narrow left column and frequently spilled over to the next page; and the chart for roasting meat was completely unusable.
