An icy shieldmaiden haunted by death. When her twin brother goes missing, Heatha journeys into the unknown to search for him. Against her better judgement, she finds herself joining the royal guard of the handsome, self-indulgent prince of a neighbouring country.
A fiery prince tormented by longing. When the king disappears, Arzade is sent on a quest to retrieve his missing father. Blackmailed into obedience, he leaves the royal palace in search of a man he hopes never to find. The last thing he needs is his icy new guard ordering him around and refusing to let herself be charmed. Heatha and Arzade soon discover that war is brewing, their quest is failing and there are assassins at their heels. If they hope to survive, they’re going to have to work together, and before they know it, the line between hate and love begins to blur.
When frost and flames meet, which will be the first to yield?
"And you, my boy, prince of lies, prince of smiles. I know what you did, and you will pay for it." • My review of Prince of Frost and Flames by Violet Froste: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ • I received this book for free by the author in exchange for an honest review. • I don't often read fantasy romance, this was a first for me, and I didn't really have high expectations. But now that it's finished, I feel like there's so much to say, but there are no words to describe the way this book made me feel🤩 • This book follows Heatha, a princess in search of her brother, who's a guard of the missing king of a foreign country. It also follows the story of Arzade, bastard prince and son of the missing king, whom he despises. Throughout the story, they discover much about each other and themselves. • First off, I was only at chapter two when I fell in love with Arzade! He is a broken prince, and often described as a drunkard, but very soon you find out why. His character development throughout the story is straight up 👌🏻 *chef's kiss*. Heatha is a strong female character. She faces her fears and overcomes them, and isn't your average whiny girl. Her story was interesting to follow and she was absolutely not annoying as some female characters can be! • Secondly, the author's writing style is absolutely incredible! As stated before, I didn't have many expectations but this book left me ruined! Her writing is captivating, poetic, almost. For the last fifteen chapters, I couldn't put it down! • There is so much to say!! The worldbuilding was incredible! These characters travel the continent so it would have to be, but I was absolutely not disappointed 🤩 • Lastly, the ending was not entirely as I had expected/hoped it to be, but I am so happy with this regardless!! The climax of the story was intense and took my breath away. I physically felt the fear of the characters, and their determination! • So in conclusion, this book is definitely worth the read🤩 it's a story that makes you believe in love, and that will keep you in its power from page 1. (Arzade will forever be the prince of my heart❤️) • "Why should I ache so much? You could never have loved me anyway."
Honestly, I don't know where to start. This is the type of book that truly sucks you into the story, immediately. Yes, I'm talking about first-page-immediately.
First of all, the characters were described amazingly. It gave you a feeling that you've always known the characters, yet you don't. You know nothing of them, and yet it seems like you know everything. Every little secret, every dark thing, every lie, but you don't. Surprise took over a lot, so did shock, and even a bit of hatred
Second of all, I can't get over every little detail. Everything was thought through, everything had a structure, its own way of being what it is. The countries all had their different and unique way of structure, meaning, the way they looked and felt to characters was all so different, yet all so beautiful.
I truly can't even write a normal review for this. I am still recovering from this. It was so well written and it truly gave me the warmth of love. I love a lot of books, but this book was truly the book I was in the mood for. Now I'm gonna go decide which god walks with me. Sungod? The god of mischief? The god of death? Who knows?
I am telling you with all my power that you all should read this! It was truly awesome.
Truly enjoyed this plot and the characters! Finally someone who could depict a group of several core characters without it being boring or confusing. Been trying to read too many that fail at this. Typos still bugged, but far less in this one.
I loved Heatha and Arzade and the back-and-forth dance of their romance! And enjoyed all the beautiful descriptions, the characters coming to life on the page, as well as the medieval feel and the mood throughout of solving a mystery, being on a journey...I could really imagine myself there in the harsh landscapes and following the ‘political’ intrigue and dealings and negotiations for power, and the matters of the heart. This really hit the spot at the right time, enjoyed it!
This is a slow burn, budding romance story between Heatha and Arzade. When Heatha’s twin brother is missing, she must search for him. She joins the royal guard of Prince Arzade who is on a quest as well. He is blackmailed to search for the king who has disappeared, hoping he is not successful. When the icy new guard joins them, it’s just further discomfort.
But Heatha and Arzade find war is brewing, their quests are failing, and assassins are coming to stop their efforts. As they work together for survival, they begin to fall for each other at last.
The character development and world-building in this story is done well. This story line is action-packed, holding the full attention of the reader as the story unfolds. Grab your copy and see whether Heatha and Arzade can outsmart their enemies and complete at least a part of their mission. Or will they need to put all of their attention on their own survival?
I can't say enough good things about this book! I had the pleasure of beta reading this book for the author and I'm here to gush about it.
I loooved Heatha and Arzade. They were beautifully flawed and showed amazing character development throughout, especially Arzade. The relationships were developed wonderfully, especially the romance. If you like slow burn, this is the book for you. I even loved the secondary characters, which is fairly rare for me.
The world in which this book took place felt so real to me-- I could have been there myself. The author does a great job at creating a diverse land and describing the different places that they travel to.
I haven't read the other two books in the series, but I am looking forward to them (and anything else that Violet Froste comes out with.) I will definitely be rereading this one sometime (probably multiple times). I highly recommend this book!
I read book 1 and its companion novella a couple months ago, and I was literally pulled in by the amazing characters and story-writing! This book as well was an absolute pleasure to read! Aand now that I'm done with all books released so far, I feel like rereading from book 1 again 🥲
This book is a hate/wariness to friends to love trope and I totally loved it! The story follows Arzade, a prince on a quest to find his missing father (the King), and Heatha, a neighbouring country's princess who joins the quest as a warrior in Arzade's PrinceGuard (her true motivation being to find her twin brother, who's sworn in as a warrior on the missing king's KingsGuard)
I've said it before, but I'll say it again.. Violet Froste is AMAZING at writing strong heroines, and strong but not arrogant/bossy heroes 🤍 I loved the protags Heatha and Arzade in this one!
I really enjoyed this book by the end of it. It took me a while to get into it, but once I got going I couldn’t put it down. The word building was nicely done. The author wasn’t too wordy. The love story made sense even in just less than 500 pages. It was refreshing to follow a well-written slow-build love story rather than one filled with pages of smut and poor dialogue.
I am NOT a big romance reader. The slow burn, and presence of an actual plot, makes me love this series. I find myself truly invested in the characters and the politics. I will continue the next book in the series.
Like the 1st book, the author keeps you in tunnel vision. Even though this and the 1st book take place in the same fantasy world. It is obvious the author only thinks of this world in tiny tunnel visions around the romance.
Very slow burn. Overall storyline was good. I think the fact that the love interest didn't really pick up until almost 80% was a let down. Otherwise good read.
I like the characters individually but I really didn’t see any chemistry between Heatha & Arzade. Heatha gave nothing back and yet he fell madly in love with her. I just couldn’t get into that part of the book. The rest of it was ok though.
This. Was. Awesome. The world was great and there was nonstop adventure. Definitely had some twists I was not expecting.
But most importantly, the character development was fantastic. Heatha is a shieldmaiden with a death wish and has no liking for Prince Arzade who drinks himself into a stupor to avoid his life. It takes a while, but both characters help each other acknowledge their problems and see beyond to become better people. The slow pace made their changes believable. The characters earn each other's respect first before the L word is even uttered, and I LOVED it. The supporting characters were great too.
Told in dual POV, my fav. I read this in 2 days. On to book 3! A spicy scene at the very end, but totally skippable if it's not your thing.
That cover. Heatha is ass kicking and wearing chainmail the whole book. I think she's in a dress for one scene.
