Natalie would never have believed how much trouble an extra chromosome or two could be. She had been fascinated with DNA since the day she had learned about the marvelous structure in Middle School. Something so small being able to control one's very appearance just seemed almost magical. When she learned her very own DNA could be analyzed to determine where her ancestors were from, and even to identify people to whom she might be related, she had immediately wanted to have the test performed.
It wasn't until years later when her boyfriend Eric gave her a surprise gift on her birthday that she was actually able to submit her DNA for testing. She'd been hardly able to wait for the results, but for some reason the company was very late on reporting the analysis that she was dying to see.
Then, two men pretending to be from the company that had collected her sample for testing, showed up at her door and attempted to kidnap her. Simple lucky timing saved her from being hauled off, but from words that had been exchanged there was little doubt the attempted abduction was somehow related to what had been found in her DNA.
At this point, things started to go downhill rapidly. The anomaly found in her DNA was something that even the United States government was interested in, and in an attempt to force her to surrender to the authorities, she and Eric were framed for several serious crimes that they hadn't committed.
But there was more, and it wasn't something the government controlled. She was changing. She was developing abilities that were unheard of which almost certainly had to be related to the strange chromosome pattern that she now realized she carried.
Before Natalie and Eric could prove their innocence of the crimes they had been accused of, Natalie found herself locked away in a lab controlled by the US Army, the subject of daily testing as the scientists tried to unravel her new abilities, and trigger the appearance of others.
Knowing, or at least strongly suspecting, that she wouldn't ever be free to live her old life, Natalie sought a means of escape. The freedom she sought would have been out of reach had it not been for the unheard of abilities she had developed while held prisoner. But escaping the labs did not guarantee her old life, and she was going to have to fight even to stay liberated.
We could run out the back Jack, make a new plan Stan. Whatever. This is an exciting book about the consequences of a person being born with the odd genetic anomaly of a pair of chromosome 24. Instead of 23 and me, we've got 24 and wow. The gene doesn't become effective until after puberty, but when it does it wakens all those pseudo genes lying around doing nothing, and gets them to activate giving super sight and super hearing and more. So Natalie takes a genetic test that discovers she's got this rare condition. Problem being only one other person is known to have had this condition, but he died demonstrating his super powers this makes the government very interested in Natalie. So first they try to kidnap her, but her boyfriend rescues her. Then she and her boyfriend try escape and evasion. Works for awhile, but when captured, she becomes a non-volunteer lab rat for the government without any constitutionally guaranteed rights. She develops her skills then uses them to escape. She evades some more but that almost comes to an end. Turning around and becoming the cornered mouse she appears to be successful. No sequel needed. Mr. Blish his guns early, and has a varied arsenal in his story. He uses some army special forces, and a disgruntled former CIA operative to keep the action going. His premise of an extensively corrupt government got me thinking. In earlier times the thought of rights being violated and laws trashed as extensively as in this book would have been inconceivable. Four nurses, a couple of doctors and some technicians all cooperating as employees in inhuman acts of experimentation much as happened in the concentration camps of germany in the last world war. One would think that there would be someone with a conscience that would blow the whistle, but today's society seems not made that way anymore. Thus the story takes on a more sinister appearance as in 1984. Could this really happen? I'm not giving a 5 because the editing is horrible. Misspelled words. Wrong verb tense. Extra or unneeded or wrong prepositions. Wrong gender of pronouns. Who was used incorrectly most of the time.
The story is well written (not perfect some error but easy to figure what meant), characters are great and storyline was entertaining. It was a very good with believable characters and story. I was really taken with the whole DNA and testing underlying of the story. Do I really want to do it now!? Overall it was a good reading experience and I was highly entertained. Bob Blink does it again with a good book! Definitely a go to author to read. If you like what is the overview (jacket of book) then I do recommend to buy.
This story of a young lady who gets a DNA test done and suddenly finds herself being a government lab rat was super scary because it could happen. A regular person is powerless to stop them. Just poof, your regular life is gone. Anyway this was a very interesting entertaining story. There was some science in this fiction.
This was a great / fine sci-fi mystery. In the most pleasing development of characters but I’ve been able to read in a long time. Interesting book great action and great characters. I recommend that you read it
