There are only 21 players alive who have kicked 100 goals in a season. These are golden moments in AFL football. These are players who by their skill created their own records and delighted the fans. Even today the idea of Buddy Franklin kicking 100 goals this season is being talked about in hushed tones. Will he do it? Is it possible in the fast-paced modern game? The players bring back the thrill of the chase to 100 with their own recollections of the time. Among them are some of the greats of the game - Doug Wade, Peter Hudson, Alex Jeaulenko, Peter McKenna, Gary Ablett, Tony Lockett, Buddy Franklin, Matthew Lloyd, Peter Sumich, Fraser Gehrig, Malcolm Blight and more. Great representatives for their clubs and cheered forever more by the fans. Most are household names, all have an interesting story to tell. Fascinating inside stories from Jon Anderson from players who were at the pinnacle of their careers.
To say that this was an enjoyable trip down memory lane is an absolute understatement. When Gordon Coventry of Collingwood kicked his 100th goal in the 1929 season he was the first player in VFL/ AFL history to do so. In 100 Goals: The Stars That Kicked Them Jon Anderson interviews the 21 living men that managed the magic figure, an achievement compared to breaking the 4 minute mile or a cricket batter making 300 runs. He starts with the arrival of Peter Hudson to Victoria from Tasmania and then kicking 100 goals in the season of 1968 a mark last reached by Essendon legend John Coleman in 1952. He then through interviews details the stories of those that followed Hudson from Doug Wade of Geelong/ North Melbourne to Tony Lockett of Stkilda/Sydney Swans to the last person to reach 100 goals in a season Lance “ Buddy “ Franklin. What I really liked was reading the opinions of the full backs who played on the guys on who they thought was the best or hardest to play on. Finally grabbing this book off the shelf and reading it has happened at a time in the 2025 AFL football season when someone for the first time in 17 seasons is a real chance of kicking 100( Geelong player Jeremy Cameron). And out of all the players listed in the book who were the best full forwards in my opinion having watched and loved the game of Australian Football for 50 years? To me it always be Tony Lockett who kicked the most career goals ( 1360) and had the highest career accuracy in kicking for goal ( 70% , 70 goals for every 100 attempts).
