Look Both Ways

Rate this book
Written nearly two decades since Ellison’s film-adapted book, Miracles One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey, LOOK BOTH WAYS offers a more mature, more contemplative look at life after the accident that left her paralyzed from the neck down at age eleven. Using personal and, at times, emotionally challenging events in her life as a platform, Ellison compels readers to reflect upon experiences in their own lives and thrive as a result of them. Exploring topics such as hope, identity, ethics, inclusion, and love as part autobiography and part sociological analysis, Ellison imparts universal truths fueled by the unrelenting spirit of one who refuses to be defined by a single event in her life, but chooses to be defined by all of them.

Brooke Ellison was hit by a car when she was 11 years old. The injuries she sustained were catastrophic but she lived the book focusses a lot on her accident and the affected had on her life. The this book is deeply personal. She manages to look at disability, not only from her own perspective, but I’m more academic one. like she says in the book, she is both the patient and the professor. Reading look, both ways was the vastly different experience from reading her previous book. Miracles happen, one mother, one daughter, one journey, but it was still interesting and relatable, in spite of shedding, light on some pretty harsh realities. Brooke was clearly an amazing woman who accomplished amazing things! May she rest in peace

Brooke just died in 2024 after living since age 11 with quadriplegia. Very inspirational book. I read Miracles Happen: One Mother, One Daughter, One Journey. This is her later book, written after Harvard and she writes about public policy and her role in helping shape that policy. She advocated for people living with disabilities and for stem cell research.
