Train Master: The Railway Art of Max Jacquiard

Rate this book
Max Jacquiard is arguably the best Railway artist Canada has ever produced. Most certainly, his paintings rival those created by such renowned predecessors as Griff Teller, Otto Kuhler, and the legendary Howard Fogg. Scorned by his art teacher for having an obsession with detail rather than using the broad, sweeping brush strokes they asserted were necessary to transmit the "feeling" of a legitimate artist, artistic style, and focus. In his youth steam locomotives had fascinated him, so instead of the flowers and bowls of fruit of his art classes, Max painted locomotives. Today his paintings and prints of railway scenes grace thousands of homes and offices. Max has also been inducted into the Railway Association of Canada Hall of Fame for his amazing work.

Barrie Sanford - Best-selling author of McCulloch's Wonder and Steel Rails and Iron Men - has selected 100 of Max's finest paintings for Train Master, carefully blending them with supporting background text and historical images to enhance the magnificent visual heritage crafted by Max. The mountains of British Columbia and Alberta form the backdrop for most of Max's paintings, so mountain scenes dominate this book. Dramatic images of trains in the Rockies, Selkirks, Monashees, Shuswaps, Cascades, and Coastal Mountains are featured, with a few additional complimentary images. Most of the images are of the 1920-1955 steam era, judged by many to be the "Golden Age" of the railways in Canada. The book includes a comprehensive General Index and a Locomotive Index for those seeking images of a particular locomotive.
