There's a killer on the loose, and they look exactly like Aly.
When Aly gets a vision of herself murdering the town's beloved yet crotchety baker, she's baffled. Obviously, that never happened. But then police arrive at her house with a warrant. If she didn't kill Tony, why does she have his baker's hat?
Then Tony turns up alive, and things go from strange to supernatural. Where did that vision come from? Aly's never seen the future before—only the past. At first she thinks the vision was a trick, sent as a distraction by the same person who killed her sister-in-law. But as she works to stop them, Aly fears that her vision of Tony might not have been a lie so much as a premonition.
Ada Bell knew you'd be reading this. Okay, well, she knew someone would be. (Hi, Mom!) That's pretty much the extent of her psychic powers. A life-long mystery buff, Ada has devoured everything from Murder, She Wrote to Nancy Drew to Psych!, so she was pretty much destined to end up here. Ada loves Scooby Doo, superhero movies, STEM heroines, and cake. Mmm, cake.
I really enjoyed this groundhog day inspired installment of the series. I love Aly (who's science loving mother named aluminum) and her magically inclined friends adventures.
I received a free copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
The Pie in the Scry is the fifth book in the Shady Grove Psychic Mystery series. I've been enjoying this series and when I was in the mood for a paranormal cozy mystery I knew it was time to return to this series.
In The Pie in the Scry main character Aly finds herself trapped in a time loop. While I am not a fan of time travel and time loop plot lines usually, I found that the author handled it well and I enjoyed the story. There's only a small amount of repetition between the loops and for the most part every time loop offers something new. The pace stayed fast and it kept me reading eager to find out what was going on and whether Aly could find out how killed Tony and why she was stuck in the time loop.
I liked seeing how Aly dealt with the time loop and all the various ways she tried to find clues or ask for help. As well as the few time loops she wasted by doing some silly things or recovering from the previous loops. She goes through some harrowing things, but I appreciated her determination to keep going. There are a lot of time loops in this book and most are pretty short. I liked seeing all the various outcomes as well as seeing how Aly got closer to figuring things out with every loop. There is a steady sense of progression as she learns new things during the loops. I thought it was an interesting set up for a mystery. And with the police on her heels as they think she killed Tony she has to act fast and carefully and avoid the police as well.
I really enjoyed this book and even some of the twists at the end which put a lot of things from the previous books in a new perspective. But I really disliked the ending twist. The whole thing is confusing and changes everything and I am just not a fan especially with the way Aly doesn't even know a lot of things about what happened. Maybe the next book will change my mind, but for now I just feel very unsatisfied with the ending and feel the next book will just make it worse. I can't say much more as it's a massive spoiler, but yeah I am not a fan of this type of twist and feel it ruins things.
To summarize: The Pie in the Scry is a fast paced paranormal cozy mystery where main character Aly is trapped in a time loop. The police are hot on her heels as they think she killed Tony. Aly has to figure out who really killed Tony, avoid the police and break out of the time loop. I thought the time loop type plot was handled very well with Aly figuring new things out almost every loop and a steady feel of progression. I liked seeing all the various outcomes of the loops, although there are some harrowing and sad ones as well. It was well written and kept me reading eager to see what Aly would discover and do in the next loop. Unfortunately the ending kinda ruined things for me and I am really not happy with the big twist at the end. It just makes me feel like too much changed and I am not sure if I can enjoy the next book, although I am willing to give it a try.
The Shady Grove baker makes some of the BEST desserts ever, but everyone agrees he's a bit of a grouch ... but surely not enough to kill him?!? Until Aly sees a vision of their very heinous act, except she's doing the killing? That can't be right ... until the police start banging on her door. She escapes from the police and calls a friend for help, except that things go sideways and her friend ends up dying! Aly is crushed beyond belief and while still grieving, opens her eyes to see that she's right where she was when she had the vision!!!! WHAT???? Yep, her day becomes a Groundhog Day event - repeating itself over and over and over ... in a magical loop ... that won't stop until she's completed her mission - which she'd gladly do, if only she knew what that was?!?!?
(Semi-spoiler if you haven't read the previous books). There are small inconsistencies between each book, but the ones in the last few books are bigger. This time, they keep mentioning Ellen is going to help with the new spell because she also helped reverse the spell at the end of the previous book. Which she didn't. The previous book specifically mentioned how she couldn't help, since she's a hearth witch, so they used the orb to strengthen their spell instead. It turned out not to matter in the end, but how can you forget your last book, as an author? Is it an editing error? The story is okay otherwise. The other books were better, in my opinion.
I absolutely loved the first four books. But so dissatisfied with the plot twist in this that I feel like all my time was wasted. Had I have known I would have never read any of them. Spoiler ALERT if you haven’t read the book you may not want to continue reading this…. The plot at the end I could live with as long as things went back to the way they were in the first four books. But reading the backs of all the others in this series it is very clear things do not go back to the way they were. I have never seen an author do this, it may be a thing but I will not be reading any books or series like that ever again. I’m so disappointed!!!

All I can say is wow. Get ready for a wild rollercoaster ride in this book. Poor Aly is trapped in a time loop and has to figure out how to get out of it. We also find out nothing is as we have thought it has been throughout this series. Well written with the same humor we've seen throughout the series, Aly's adventures in this book hit all the emotions. This is my favorite book in the Shady Grove Psychic Mysteries, and one that can't be missed. I'm looking forward to the next one because Aly's world has been turned upside down.
What an intriguing and magical cozey para mystery it's so well written with its array of vibrant, colorful, and intriguing characters that will draw you into their story wanting to get to know them better while its mystery entices you even further and the plot keeps you turning page after page enraptured by it all from the very beginning and through to the unexpected magical and climatic conclusion. Acquire " The Pie in the Scry " today so you yourself can enjoy as much as I have. 😀 Kat
I was grateful to get an advanced copy of this book to read and review. This is book 5 of this wonderful series. It was such a fun, enjoyable read that will keep you turning the pages for more. You will not be able to put this down, as you enjoy the rollercoaster ride that the main character Aly takes you on.
This is such a fun book! I loved how the author meticulously plotted the book to come to the final conclusion. I also love how some of the series arcs are coming to a head! I can’t wait for the next book!
Aly reliving the same day, over and over and over again, it was interesting to see how she worked out what she needed to do to try and break the cycle. The way it ended, just, whoa! It’s going to feel like forever for November to get here for the next book!
This is a fun read and a solid entry into the Shady Grove cozy mystery series. I particularly liked the time loop aspect of this story, and the callbacks to previous books. Can't wait for the next one!
The Pie in the Scry By Ada Bell This is book 5 in the series. There is a curse that causes our Shady Grove psychic to repeat her day over and over like Groundhog Day until she can solve the mystery. It's a good mystery too! The sneak peak leading to the next book looks pretty good too!
I really enjoy this series but honestly expected this to feel repetitive due to the time loop yet somehow it wasn't. This is definitely different from most cosy mysteries and so much happened that I couldn't have predicted. I'd definitely recommend people check this series out
3.5 stars. I enjoyed this take on Groundhog Day, where Aly keeps repeating the same day where she is running from the police after being involved in a crime. The ending was so shocking, I can’t wait to read the next book!
This Shady Grove Psychic Mystery book 5 has Aly living in a time loop and then continues on to a very surprising ending. Now I have to read the next book in the series so that I can find out what happens to Aly next.
I recommend you read the books in order, you don't want to miss a thing, wonderful characters, good plot all the way to the end. keeps you guessing, the whodunnit!
I did like it , but the whole plot twist with Mary just make this impossible to really like. I will still buy and read the new one but it's too much. I did like Tony a lot, I hope we see more of him.

I received an ARC of The Pie in the Scry. I loved this book and could not put it down. This series is so amazing and I love each character, especially Aly. She is fun and smart and pushes herself to figure out why she is in this time loop. I loved the time loop, and each chapter left me hanging, wanting to know what caused the loop and how she would stop it. I can't wait for the next book in this series.
I just listened to the Audiobook of The Pie in the Scry and I loved it. The narrator is amazing and brings the story to life
