"This person is at a disadvantage because the good parts of him don’t really show through on the surface."

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Vol. 5.5
By Saekisan

An anthology volume! I skipped this and read volume 7 first, now that I have caught up, decided to read this one. This one was much better than I thought it would be.

This volume is a collection of short stories that took between the first four volumes. These stories provide extra details about Mahiru and Amane. Even though these are short stories, they still have a great effect on the story. It helps to understand the characters better.

This volume has stories from Mahiru's perspective. Which I believe was absolutely wonderful. In this volume, we are able to see how Mahiru's thinking about Amane changed over time, and her interactions with Itsuki and chitose were explored more.

"The movement wasn’t that violent since she was dealing with a child, but the rejection was clear."

We learn more about Mahiru's past, too. How neglected she felt, how her "parents" treated her. This adds much more to the story. I also liked Itsuki and Aname's story about how they became friends.

Overall, it was a great volume, and I liked the different perspectives. Would've liked to read more volumes like this one.

8/10

Anthology volumes like this are usually a 50:50 for me. I'll either hate it or love it. This one is most definitely the latter. For anyone that has read and loved this series, this volume is a must-read! You cannot skip this one. Everything you've wondered about or wished to read about that wasn't in the main storyline is HERE.

It contains the expected snippets of everyday life of Mahiru and Amane. As always the pair are cute and flirty without meaning to be. But that isn't all. There're also scenes with the side character including the answers to how Chitose and Itsuki got together and how Amane and Itsuki became friends. I can see why they needed to publish this extra volume with all the content that's in this. Like I said, it's a must-read.

A collage of short stories/vignettes that all happen within the time frame of the first 1- 4 books that showcase the points of view of different characters. Taking a small step back from Amane and seeing how other characters are feeling and thinking is incredibly refreshing. Short stories that still have him as the main perspective still take up roughly half of the book but that helps hieghten the moments when he's not. It also allows Saekisan to hint at plot threads that never quite had the space- or even the need- to be included in a main title.

It's my favorite entry in the series thus far and I hope that Saekisan will put out another .5 volume before wrapping up the series.

Best in the series

This is now my favorite in the series we get to finally see other characters perspective. Especially Mahiru whose perspective makes for a delightful read. It also serves as a nice break from Amame whose overly cautious characterization can be a bit difficult to enjoy reading at times.

An interesting collection of short stories providing snippets of of the relationship between Aname and Mahiru that do not make it in the main storyline. A number of the stories are told from the viewpoint of side-characters such as Itsuki, Chitose, and Yuuta.

After the first few stories, I was thinking, okay this will be a 3, but then the later stories pushed it up to 3.5-4 stars.

This is less a book moving the story forward and more of a collection of vignettes providing background to the story. A fun read.

I know it seems a bit silly to leave a full review after already giving a rating, but I was pressed for time before. As many of you who've read this series know, it's full of heartwarming moments and is easily one of the best romance light novels out there right now.

For those considering this volume, I'd say it's actually pretty important to the series overall. Some of the information in these short stories adds valuable context to events in volumes 9 and 10. I actually read this one out of order, since I initially skipped volumes 5.5 and 8.5 (I'm not usually a fan of short stories). But honestly, I'm so glad I came back to them!

It was wonderful to get more background on the characters and see the little moments that shaped their relationship. If you're enjoying the series, don't miss out on these extra glimpses into their lives!"
