Althea Rutherford is disappointed in all the men she has met so far as prospective husbands and wishes to be allowed to travel overseas instead of doing another 'season.' Lucian, Earl of Devon has just been jilted and is not looking for love either. They meet at a family Christmas gathering and of course they fall in love.
This would be a perfect book to read at Christmas for any reader of historical romance. There are some lovely scenes of Christmas as it was then, shopping at market stalls for handmade gifts, making bon bons for the tree, being entertained by family plays. The whole book is gentle and relaxing and a pleasure to read.

This was a lovely novella - no angst, secrets, or drama. I loved it! I have read and enjoyed all of The Worthingtons, but I think this is my favorite. This was a story of when you know you met your mate, you know.
Miss Althea Rutherford had already had a season (or two?). She was beautiful, smart, and desirable; but the suitors caused her to enjoy the season less. None were even vaguely interesting or attractive. She decided she would take a break at a married people and children only friends and family Christmas houseparty and convince her brother to let her travel the continent for a year afterward.
Lucian, the Earl of Devon, had just returned from a three and a half year tour of Europe. His parents had arranged a betrothal for him at a young age. He wanted to marry, so she could go with him. She refused and ended up marrying another while he was away. Instead of going to his parents to push him into another betrothal immediately, his married friend Exeter picked him up and took him for Christmas where he could be away from the matchmakers. He didn't know he would meet the woman he would fall in love with there.
The story was very sweet - no intimate love scene (unlike most Ella Quinn). Plus it was Christmas! If I had a complaint, it would be that it ended too soon. I wouldn't mind reading about the marriage night and maybe even some of their travels.

A pleasing story of reluctant debutante, Althea Rutherford, who wanted to travel rather than marry, and a jilted fiancé who is contemplating his future. Lucian, the Earl of Rutherford, joins his friends for a quiet Christmas season, and is pleasantly distracted. A hesitant and sweet Christmas romance where love quietly triumphs proving love will be no barrier to travel.

I was in the mood for something different from my usual preferred genre offerings so decided to go looking in one of my favorite categories from long ago, historical romance. This one turned out to be so low key I began to wonder if I had mistakenly wandered over into the YA book shelves. And, in fact, this book can be read by any age group; young, old or somewhere in between.
It seems this novella is part of a series featuring men and women who have no interest in getting married. In this instance Miss Althea Rutherford has accepted an invitation to spend Christmas in the English countryside where the houseguests are comprised of young children, young women not yet "out" in society, parents and grandparents. Wholesome as all get-out! Into this placid landscape comes Lucian, the Earl of Devon, who has been thrown over by his fiancé who has found true love while he frittered his time away on his three-year grand tour of the Continent. He isn't really hurt by her defection, but he wants to keep away from any marriage-hunting maidens.
Believe me, you can read this one aloud in church and nobody would raise an eyebrow. Quiet, yes. Tension filled, no. Three stars because it came terribly close to being boring.

Bleh.. this was horrible for an HR. The dialogue was cheesy, the plot boring and not exciting. Their chemistry was minimal - I mean I get this was probably how it was during this era, but that’s exactly why I want such a strong, adventurous and angsty romance plot so I forget how boring this society was.

This was a sweet clean novella, but I was hoping for a bit more. There wasn't any conflicts between Lucian and Althea except neither expected to get married. Lucian is still reeling from the fact that his betrothed married another and Althea just hadn't found any gentleman that captured her attention. They both attended the house party not expecting to find any other single people there. They bond over their love of music, and everything falls into place so they can marry via special license. There's no tension, no great passion, merely a few stolen glances so that was disappointing. Not sure if I'll read any more of the series. Most of the other stories I've read have also been ranked 3 stars - sweet stories, but nothing special.

This is a sweet, squeaky clean holiday novella. Althea Rutherford, has been out for two years and is tired of the marriage mart. She would like to travel on the continent on a grand tour like men. Lucian, Earl of Devon is just returning from his Grand tour. He extended it beyond the normal three years as his intended married while he was away. Both are invited to a family house party at Lord Exeter’s. It is a families and friends gathering and surprisingly Lucian and Althea are the only two unattached.
There are conversations over chess, shopping in the village and they even get the starring roles in the children’s play production of Snow White. It is all very cute, with no tension or angst or much of anything else. I’ve read a few of Quinn’s books and recognized a couple from The Marriage Game series and it also lists on GR’s as part of The Worthingtons series. I’m assuming they are part of the same world and there would be extra interest in this book from readers of either series as they would know other couples at the party.
At just over a hundred pages this can be read and enjoyed quickly. For me it is 3 stars, but can see readers rating it higher if they were invested in the other characters and getting a chance to catch up on their lives. A well written charming novella & two people falling in love there’s no mystery, no angst just a delicious romance. There is a bit of matchmaking going on from a few sources but weren’t needed as both Lucian & Althea were attracted to each other from their first meeting & found that they had so much in common & the more time they spent together the more their feelings grew. I also loved that we caught up with characters from previous books

Meh. I wish I had read more books from the two series that characters seem to be from. This mostly seemed like an excuse to get those characters back together. That, and the fact that Lucian was all about how he wasn’t quite over being jilted and then—bam!—he sees Althea and is ready to get to know her instead.

“The Earl’s Christmas Bride” is the first book I’ve read by Ella Quinn (though I’ve recently downloaded a bunch of her books and I can’t wait to dig in). It’s technically part of “The Marriage Game” series, but as someone who has read none of the other books, I can tell you it is not necessary to have read the others to enjoy this one. “The Earl’s Christmas Bride” does reference several of the stories from the other books, though, so I can see how having read them could further enrich your experience. (And I just checked—you can find them all on Kindle Unlimited, so you could get a membership and binge the whole series if you wanted.)
This is an excellent book to read around the holidays for two very good reasons—1) The story takes place during Christmas time, and 2) It’s not very long. It’s an extremely quick read, being just over 100 pages. For me, books like this are perfect for the holidays, when I can’t seem to find as much time to dedicate to reading.
Speaking of the length—and this is my ONLY criticism of the book—do I wish it was a little bit longer? Yeah, I do. Just a little. The pacing of the book was really great until I got to about 80% in, and then it felt rushed. Still a lovely story, but a little rushed.
Some of my favorite things about this book were the Earl of Devon himself (swoon!) and the inclusion of “Schneewittchen.” I studied German in high school and actually performed as Schneewittchen in a film for a German competition, so this entire storyline felt very near and dear to my heart.
If you’re looking for an extra spicy romance then “The Earl’s Christmas Bride” isn’t for you, but if you’re looking for a quick holiday romance about falling in love you should give this book a try.

Althea had decided she was happy being single and wanted to go on a grand tour. All the men she knew had the opportunity and had been but women never had the option. She needed to convince her brother to let her go! Her mother was forever trying to match make but her brother had promised her that if she was to marry, she could choose and that someone wouldn’t be forced on her.
Lucien had been on his own grand tour which he extended when his fiancée jilted him. It wasn’t a love match but it was still upsetting that she had found someone else and married him. His mother once she knew he was home would be match making to find him a wife.
Both were invited to a quiet house party of just family and friends, each being told and not realising that there would be someone of the opposite sex who was single attending. With some of the family secretly match making, it soon became obvious that they were meant to be together. As for Althea’s dream of a grand tour, Lucien would happily take her so they both could have their own grand tour.
A lovely light hearted short clean novella, full of fun and romance. A perfect read for a well deserved lazy afternoon.
When reading Ms Devon’s notes at the end of the story and how she mentioned about the story not having any steamy moments. I completely agree with what she said. There really wasn’t any room for this and to be honest, the story in itself was perfect without it.

This Christmas romance novella really wasn't for me.
It seemed like a second epilogue for the Marriage Game series (which I hadn't read and will now likely also not) and with a new couple thrown into the mix.
There were several scenes in this novella that didn't involve either the hero or heroine which I don't like in full-length romances as this is more indicative of women's fiction rather than romance - but to have that in a short novel, is just not for me.
This is also with the background that the relationship between both hero and heroine wasn't deep enough and explored enough. When he proposed, it came as full shock as they hadn't shared any sentiments towards each other, never mind romantic ones; no embrace, no kiss, no words of affection. And having a love match was something that the heroine had been holding out for. The connection just wasn't there.
This would likely be a nice, easy read as a round up for readers who have adored the entire series as it felt like everyone from previous books was present in this story.

Althea is determined to marry someone who will love her and treat her with respect. For Christmas, Althea is going with her brother and his wife to a friends for Christmas. She is so relieved that it won’t be a matchmaking hell.

This is a nice, sweet, clean story of Althea and Lucian who both were not looking for someone to marry but found that person who is right for them when they were not expecting it. I will say, there was a lot of characters mentioned in the story, which came from other books, but because I did not read those other books, I didn’t enjoyed them being mentioned as much as I would have if I read the other books.

Heroine: Althea Rutherford, under 21? Sister of the Baron Rutherford.
Hero: Lucian Devon, age unknown. Earl of Devon and heir to the Marquis of Rockingham.
Date: 1818
How they meet: Althea attends a Christmas house party with her brother and sister-in-law which is a gathering of many of her brother’s friends and their families. Lucian is just returning home from his grand tour of the Continent. He is a bit down because while he was away, the woman he had long been betrothed to married someone else. With his plans upended, his friend (who is also a friend of Althea’s brother) invites him to come along to the house party rather than straight to his parents where eligible young ladies will be pushed at him. When they arrive at the estate, they are met by a group of ladies out for a stroll, among them is Althea, who is holding a baby.
What happens: Lucian immediately takes notice of Althea. He assumes she is married but is curious enough to find out for sure. He learns she is single, but also that she is not eager to marry. Althea has secretly been making plans to travel to Europe, although doesn’t yet have her brother’s permission. Knowing that Lucian has just returned from there, she is eager to question him. They are also the only two single people of marriageable age at the party so they end up spending a lot of time conversing. They also pair up to prepare a musical number to be performed as part of the Christmas entertainment.
Verdict: This is a very cute love match story, with the plot solely focused on the romance. The hero and heroine have so much in common and there is a lot of conversation between the two, so the chemistry is sweet and believable. This makes a good standalone story in terms of the romance, although secondary characters appear in other Ella Quinn books. It is a little unclear which series this book belongs in. Hoopla lists it as the last book in the Marriage Game series, while Goodreads has it as 7.5 in The Worthingtons series. I have seen two different cover images, one with each series printed on it. Not having read all of the first 7 books in The Worthingtons series, I’m not sure if this story ties back to any in that series, but many of the secondary characters appear in the Marriage Game series, and the party is a nice way to bring them together for updates on their lives.

How they meet: Althea attends a Christmas house party with her brother and sister-in-law which is a gathering of many of her brother’s friends and their families. Lucian is just returning home from his grand tour of the Continent. He is a bit down because while he was away, the woman he had long been betrothed to married someone else. With his plans upended, his friend (who is also a friend of Althea’s brother) invites him to come along to the house party rather than straight to his parents where eligible young ladies will be pushed at him. When they arrive at the estate, they are met by a group of ladies out for a stroll, among them is Althea, who is holding a baby.
What happens: Lucian immediately takes notice of Althea. He assumes she is married but is curious enough to find out for sure. He learns she is single, but also that she is not eager to marry. Althea has secretly been making plans to travel to Europe, although doesn’t yet have her brother’s permission. Knowing that Lucian has just returned from there, she is eager to question him. They are also the only two single people of marriageable age at the party so they end up spending a lot of time conversing. They also pair up to prepare a musical number to be performed as part of the Christmas entertainment.
Verdict: This is a very cute love match story, with the plot solely focused on the romance. The hero and heroine have so much in common and there is a lot of conversation between the two, so the chemistry is sweet and believable. I found this book discounted on Amazon via Bookbub; this is my honest review.
-This is Althea and Lucien's story. I don't remember hearing about either of them so I didn't know much. Turns out, everyone is friend with everyone else. LOL. They are a tight group of people, with lots of wisdom and children. It was really fun to see them all together in one book.
-Wow, can you imagine early Christmas trees with straw, wood, and fire?
-I was really surprised to hear that Huntingdon was in his 70s but had a 15 y.o. daughter - Ophelia.
-These guys are really fast. We're at ~38% and not even 24 hours in the story: "made him -Lucien- want to take her -Althea- straight up to his bed." Fortunately, they were wise enough to wait for their vows being said.
-Those children were really sneaky; I liked seeing them play matchmakers.
-Repeats: “Here they are,” They say that a lot like they were some lost souls. "Phillida Endicott" she's the only who's name is repeated every time they talk to/about her.
-Anyone else thought the kiss in the skit was really funny since Althea had rouge all over her lips; wouldn't it have transferred to Lucien's face?
-Slow pace, no mysteries, no suspense, no 2nd romance. It was interesting to see how things would go but it's not memorable. Still worth 3.5 stars.
-Editing: Name changed (Gervase vs. Gervais). Ill-written (Are not we all?, I’m sure others of us). Too many words: in this case "as well" was put at the end but shouldn't be there since it's not the same number of children. Wrong French (intéressante vs. intéressant).

This was a cute little Christmas novella in the Worthington/Marriage Game world. There is a family friendly house party over the Christmas period happening at the Marquis of Exeter's estate. Lucian, the Earl of Devon has just returned to Britain after a long Grand Tour, with his life in a bit of disarray as his intended bride threw him over and married someone else. His friend, Exeter, whisks him away to his estate to join in his house party instead, and Lucian is glad as he thinks he would be able to just enjoy time with friends, and not worry about having marriage-minded debutantes chasing after him.
Althea Rutherford has been out for a couple of years but has not found anyone of interest to her as a husband. She is also thinking that the house party would be low stress, in terms of matchmaking, and has conceived an interest to travel herself, and is hoping to use the time to convince her brother and guardian to allow her to have her own Grand Tour rather than joining the Marriage Mart again. She plumbs Lucian for information to help her decide where she should plan to travel.
They develop a friendship and attraction, and are further aided by the matchmaking youngsters and other family members of the house party. This is a sweet and cute little Christmas romantic novella. Nothing really outstanding, but a cute little story nonetheless.

Lucian, Earl of Devon, has just returned from overseas and has been invited to attend the house party of his friend, Lord Exeter. After being jilted, he's determined to remain a bachelor. Althea Rutherford has designs on visiting the continent instead of another season. She's the only unmarried attending the house party until Lucian arrives unexpectedly. When these two first meet, their only common ground is Lucian's tales of travelling the continent. From this basis, friendship and more develop in this Christmas novella.
I haven't read any other books from this series but it seems to be a well-established group of love stories. It seems both main characters have some back story from the previous books, so I imagine the reader would benefit from having read these. That said, the novella is suited as a stand-alone book also and I didn't find myself confused at any point.
Overall this is a short and sweet story of finding love at a house party at Christmas. Personally, I can't imagine a relationship developing so quickly but this is a romance and a novella. So I guess it's perfectly natural. :) There's no angst or conflict here, just a simple love story.

She begins to entertain the idea of touring the Continent before finding someone to settle down with, unbeknownst to her brother who will need to give his approval. She has accompanied her brother and his family to the estate of friends for the holiday season where she meets Lucian, who is more than happy to regale her with tales of his travels.
Neither enter the holiday season with love on their minds, but the idea of a life filled with love and travel is appealing to them both.
I enjoyed this read as historical fiction is one of my favorite genres. It was also a lesson of the times since I learned new terminology pertaining to the era.

I have read other books in this series but notice I've given them mostly 3 stars . It's a christmas novella so most of it is a returning of previous characters. The hero, Lucien has to come to terms with the fact that his ex fiancee has married someone else. The heroine, Althea doesn't want to get married so joined the house party because no eligibles would be present. She wants to do a grand tour and her parents are desperate for her to marry someone proper. It's a very clean story and I wanted more passion. Some children try to match make and eventually Lucien realises that if he offers for Althea they can kill several birds with one stone, he gets a countess exceptable to society, she can travel, and doesn't have to put up with her parents pressure. In the acknowledgements the author says she tried to fit in a tryst but there were too many other characters likely to come across them....seemed like a weedy excuse to me! Too clean and if I'm honest a bit dull.

I'm posting an honest review after reading an advanced readers copy of this story.
The old saying that when you stop looking love will find you comes true. Althea Rutherford is the oldest sister of Sebastian Rutherford who was the main love interest in The Secret Life of Miss Anna Marsh, my favorite story in that series. Althea is tired of all the gentlemen she's met, they're all the same. She's decided to leave town & take some time off, maybe for good. A house party is the answer she needs, and it'll be fun to catch up with her friends. Lucian, Earl of Devon has just come back from his Grand Tour, it was 3 and a half years long! He's got to get his parents off his back and marry. He's been burned and isn't keen to mingle with Ton ladies just yet. A invitation to a house party is the perfect excuse to stay away from London. These 2 are cute and the story inviting. It's a win-win and I'm hoping to read about some of this generation on their way to an HEA.

SO CHARMING!!! The Earl's Christmas Bride by Ella Quinn is a must read. What I liked about this book is that love at first sight can happen. Ella is a very gifted story teller and writer and I always enjoy her books. I found this story to have wonderful characters, has the real feel of the regency era, vivd descriptions and very well written. This story has a young lady that wants to travel instead of marrying, an earl that has just gotten back from a 3 yr travel due to being jilted, a mother who wants to see their child married, a Christmas house party that is friends and family only, wanting to learn of their travels & has questions, wanting to court, a play of Snow White, having a Christmas tree for the first time, making decorations, learning to play the guitar and falling in love when you least expect it. I am highly recommending you read this book, as I said it is so very Charming!!!

This was a great novella. I really enjoyed reading this quick read. It is part of a series but it worked so well as a standalone. It was so heartwarming and such a wonderful historical romance novel. It really drew me in and I was easily hooked reading it In one sitting. The story line was beautiful and full of great atmosphere. It made me feel like I was watching a movie rather than reading the book. The characters were well developed for such a short book. I really fell in love with them and it felt so realistic. I recommend this book if you love historic romance novels especially those Christmas ones to get you in the mood on the run up to Christmas.
So much praise goes out to the author and publishers for creating such a wonderful short story. This book felt like a nice warm hug. It really made me smile which is just what I needed right now.

This was a lovely way to spend an hour on a cold, dreary London day. I’m a huge fan of Regency romances, but what I really like about this novella is the casualness of the gathering…no planned events, aristocrats on a first name basis, children in evidence, and a family Christmas with the newly-adopted Tannenbaum tradition. I only wish Quinn had given us an epilogue featuring Althea and Lucien’s time in Europe (where she could have given us the steamy scene her author note said she couldn’t fit in because of the close presence of family and friends prior to the wedding). I look forward to going back and reading the Marriage Game series.

This is a short clean read with the humor you always expect from Quinn's books. Lucian, the Earl of Devon has just returned from his extended tour. He is invited to a holiday house party by his friend Exeter. The big draw is one, his mother won't be around to harass him about finding a wife. Two, basically the other guests are couples with children. Althea Rutherford is attending the party with her brother and his wife. She isn't interested in marriage. She wants to go on a grand tour. It's just a matter of convincing her brother to let her go. Lucian is smitten with Althea when he first arrives at the party. More of a relaxed atmosphere, it gives them more opportunities to spend time together, but more interruptions, especially from the children. Lucian may be in love, but what about Althea?

This novella was a nice and quick read about Lucien, who was jilted by his fiancée and now his parents want to see him wed. He has returned from traveling and ha no interest in marriage. Althea has been disgusted by the men who have proposed marriage to her, looking at her as a breeding stock and her brother’s connections. She has no interest in marriage and wants to travel. Two people not looking for love suddenly find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other, both are not whom they expected the other to be. Maybe Christmas truly is the season for miracles.
