America the Beautiful by Charlene Notgrass is a one-year American history, geography, and literature course designed for students in grades 5-8. It combines the flexibility and richness of a unit study with the simplicity of a textbook-based approach to history. Daily lessons guide your child chronologically through American history, highlighting key events, people, and places. This book has 75 lessons beginning with life in America before Europeans came and continuing through the first years after the Civil War.
Love this curriculum! The lessons are a great length, they include lots of pictures. I like the way the book is laid out with something unique to focus on with each unit. It’s not just a chronological list of events, but includes many significant figures, monuments and land features, and glimpses into the lives of the people that lived through that time. I’m so glad I found this curriculum!
So far we are really enjoying this curriculum! When the kids are super excited about the places Charlene writes about, so much so that they want to schedule family vacations just to see them, you know she appeals to her readers!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's perfect for up to 8th grade. It's detailed without being overwhelming. It handles difficult parts of history in a meaningful but age appropriate way, creating a building block for further education in high school.
