I love slashers. It's one of my favorite subgenres of horror. And while I know the 70's had the originals and the 80's saw the heyday of the slasher, I came of age watching the 90's ones. So Virgin Night, an old school slasher horror set in 1998 was exactly up my alley. I was so excited for this one, and I'm delighted to report it is exactly as good as, possibly actually even better than, I could have possibly imagined.

The town of Cherry Lake is plagued by a supernatural slasher that appears whenever anyone in the town has sex on February 13, which is referred to by the town as "Virgin Night". After his cop father sacrifices himself to stop the killings one year, Vincent is angry and wants revenge. Along with his best friends, Michael and Caleb, and the mysterious Casey, he decides to summon the killer, hoping to bring it back in order to defeat it forever.

The friendship between Vincent, Michael, and Caleb is truly the highlight of Virgin Night. Vincent is filled with so much rage but has a good heart hiding under his anger. Michael is sweet and innocent and kind and true. And Caleb, Caleb was my very favorite character. I loved his irreverence, his humor, his cockiness, and his bravery. My heart ached for him, a gay teenager with a homophobic, alcoholic father. Caleb will forever remain in my heart as one of my favorite book characters of all time.

Casey was also amazing. What a badass. She fits right in with Vincent, Michael, and Caleb, and they ended up reminding me of an older version of the Losers' Club from Stephen King's It.

Where there are great heroes, there should also be great villains, and Virgin Night features several. There's more evil afoot in Cherry Lake than just the relentless slasher, and I definitely found several characters I loved to hate, characters whose comeuppance I rooted for and reveled in.

This is possibly my favorite book I've read this year and definitely a new addition to my list of all time favorites ever. I could gush about Virgin Night much longer, but I don't want to risk spoiling anything. If you're a slasher fan, especially if your love of horror was awakened in the 90's teen horror renaissance, this is a must read. Come for the gore, stay for the excellent writing, well crafted characters, and thoroughly lovable heroes. And definitely join me in excitedly waiting for whatever Christopher Robertson does next.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

To say I “read” Virgin Night wouldn’t do the story justice. This book isn’t just a book, but a cinematic 90s slasher experience. If it was a movie, I would have rented it multiple times from the video store.

Christopher Robertson executes—and masters—a style of prose that makes you feel like you are part of a horror movie with highly developed characters, plot and backstory.

When I started Virgin Night, my expectations in what the story would be were constantly challenged. It’s clear to see how much thought went into crafting such a story. The investment I had in the characters (okay, I’ll call it an attachment because I did get very attached) made me fall in love with them—especially a certain character called Caleb.

A curse has haunted Cherry Lake for decades. The residents of Cherry Lake fear a certain night because of this: Virgin Night. Three friends decide to finally put a stop to Virgin Night and the entity that comes with it. One that has taken many lives over the years. However, other forces are at play and have their own plans for Virgin Night. Can Michael, Caleb and Vincent free Cherry Lake from the curse or are they in over their heads?

Virgin Night is a new favourite of mine and quite honestly one of the best books I have ever read. I cannot recommend this enough to lovers of the slasher genre. If you like 90s teen slashers then this is right up your street!

As a 90s kid, this book is a huge blast of nostalgia. It captures the perfect blend of the classic slasher and the 90s teen movie immature humor (if that's what you want to call it).
Reminds me of chilling at FamilyVideo while my girlfriend restocks the shelves and I'm looking at the sick “straight to VHS/DVD” horror section. Christopher Robertson really displays his writing skill by being able to break up intense and brutal scenes with quips, puns, and just straight-up teenage antics that somehow don't feel out of place or forced. The character dynamic was incredibly natural, as you can feel the bond between these people. The stories of these characters and why they are who they are is so deep and well built. The big part of this that made it so perfect to me is that Robertson took the classic slasher and put such a different vibe to it, thats all Ill say with no spoilers. It was an absolute blast reading it and I am super stoked to check out more of Robertson’s work.

Virgin Night by Christopher Robertson releases Feb 1st! Definitely recommend picking this one up if you love Slashers, dick jokes, and all around great storytelling. I know I do.

Anything this author writes is bursting with 90s nostalgic vibes and I love it, if you're the kid that went to blockbuster every friday to rent your favourite horror movie and to stare at all the cool horror covers, this is for you, Kit is exceptionally great at character development and really making you invested in their stories and I inevitably end up emotionally attached 🥺, they're solid and relatable, I love the kids fighting evil trope in horror and the friendship in this reminded me of The Losers Club, the dialogue was incredibly witty especially the character of Caleb, it perfectly captures the immature teen humour of the 90s, theres no slacking on the slashing, lots of gore yay! Christopher Robertson has such a unique voice and I really enjoy his writing style hes one of my favourite indie authors and IMO one of the best in the horror genre today, the book that reads like a movie screenplay is something I thoroughly enjoy, some elements are inspired by the slasher movies we all know and love however there are twists you don't see coming so you never get the *I've seen this one before* vibe, why haven't netflix/hollywood approached him to make his books into films, I think we need to start a petition!

I was fangirling over this book!
It's a quirky and fun take on a popular horror trope. Im a 90s baby, so I appreciated the nostalgia that it packs in. VHS, aim messenger, blade and Buffy references *sigh* anyway good times… but it follows a Bratpack of teens in a small town trying to kill this psycho malevolent entity that’s out to kill every year on virgin night .... soooooo down for it!
I loved how it reads like a movie screenplay, and it was not afraid to the point that it was out in the dialogue and scenes.
But some of that spark petered out toward the end and everything started to feel all over the place.
But overall a solid really gory slasher!
I'll add one extra star just because I loved the characters, especially Caleb. I don’t think the book would have been the same without his funny one-liners

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 to Virgin Night by Christopher Robertson

A love letter to 90s cinema Virgin Night (the night before Valentine’s Day) for the townspeople of Cherry Lake is very different for everywhere else. Why? Because Cherry Lake is cursed by a centuries old slasher intend on murdering anyone who dares to have sex around the most romantic time of the year.

My first impressions of this story having been a fan of Christopher‘s writing for some time is that Virgin Night is a blockbuster size story, in terms of scale and scope. Even the themes such as sex, which is examined diversely and feels like a breath of fresh air for such novels set in the 80s-90s time period. As well as themes of faith and organised religion, two very different things; all this is examined on a big Hollywood blockbuster canvas. It’s exciting to see, yet with going ‘bigger’ there is the risk of losing something. In Chris’s case what has stood out to me most in his writing is the quieter, intimate moments between his characters.

There’s a sense that he genuinely cares for them all and wants to give them their moment to shine. I can happily report that even though he’s working on a bigger scale he does not lose this quality. An example being the moments between Caleb, Vincent, Michael and Casey, the four friends that are central to the story, when they are simply interacting with one another. I found myself enjoying Caleb’s frenzied word vomit, Vincent’s deadpan put down’s, Casey‘s grounded maturity and Michael’s stoic reluctance to participate in the groups nonsense enough that I would reread the passages where all of them interact just for the joy of it. P

Speaking of frenzied this feels like Chris’s most frantic book!! The pace is like being placed on a rollercoaster that intends to never stop until you have a heart attack, it’s relentless, unforgiving as you are propelled through the stories pages at the speed of sound. That frenzied feeling makes the story feel like Chris isn’t just writing a love letter to the 90s horror but also doing so with a satirical lens much like the way Terry Pratchett did for fantasy. As such Chris’s writing remains unlike anything in the horror genre, it’s mix of humour, heart and horror being like an assault. Chris has stated that he doesn’t view himself as a writer more a storyteller. I would argue that he is and that he’s one of the most important voices working in the horror genre today.

Well dam. I loved that. I've been eagerly scouring the Web and bookstagram for a decent slasher when multiple friends said "you should check out some of Christopher Robertsons stuff." And I was not disappointed.

This had everything I wanted and so much more. I felt like it was written directly for me. It had the feel of a 90s horror film (literally) and I loved every second. It was both a little cheesy but not cringy, amd full of nolstalgia. The fact this wasn't your average slasher, that it spinned tropes on its head and had multiple stuff and dangers going on aside from the undead man in a mask was so refreshing. I couldn't put it down and was constantly thinking of it all week. It only took me so long to read because, work. Adulting. Le sigh.

I fell in love with these characters so much. The felt like a real friendship group, it was so easy to picture them together. Their dialogue and banter had me in stitches and i saw a young me in Caleb. Even the side characters and antagonist had meaning and added to the story and didn't feel like they were just dumped in to up the body count.

The fact it was written like you were watching a movie playing out with the "cut to's and such," was a little jarring at first but once I got used to it, it flowed so effortlessly and really made this a special read. It was like actually being in a horror film instead of watching it

It was such a thrilling ride that got me in my emotions and by the end I was tearing up. It was horrific and bloody, touching and bittersweat, and riddled with twists. I bought some of Kit's other works and cannot wait to dive in, and if your like me and love some good old Slasher films like Scream and Friday the 13th, then this is a MUST READ IMMEDIATELY for you. It is Halloween after all.

I've read alot of books marketed as "teen slasher," and always have been disappointed, but Virgin Night has broken the curse and is now my holy grail.

And I was absolutely living for the Dead by Daylight reference. Hello, fellow fog whisperer, I see you.

Oh my, I LOVED this! I loved the friendship group. Who wouldn't want a badass, supportive bunch of friends who appreciate when you want space but will also bring you pizza and make you giggle until you piss yourself? And more importantly, who will help you fight an evil force taking over town, even if it risks their lives.

The character development was 10/10 and each one had relatable moments. Michael in particular for me with some of his ways.
I wanted to follow their journey, laugh with them, cry with them. Caleb was my favourite and made me laugh out loud a number of times. I did enjoy Casey's backstory though. I love creepy camps!

When we got to Treeface (cool name eh?) coming to town and the action really kicking in, I was hooked. It was brutal, but it was damn good. Some deaths made you say noooo, and some made you go heh heh good.

Like Stephen King's IT, this is a weirdly comforting book. I mean, yes, we're talking lots of murder, but we're also talking an memorable friendship group who remind you of your own friends or the friends you wished you had.

As always, Christopher Robertson's writing allows you to enjoy the book, but also for you to feel as if you're watching it and hearing it in your head. One of those books which when sometime has passed, you'll think of it and go "Wait, was that a film I watched or a book I read?"
I hope we get to see one of these books on the big screen one day. You might actually get me out my house for that!

Excellent book, highly recommend to any horror / slasher lover!

Virgin Night reads like A F13 VJS tape ate too much sugar and stayed up all night watching the Scream franchise. Christopher Robertson is writing books that will make any of us who spent hours looking at VHS covers in small dusty video stores smile from cover to cover. Anyone who knows me, anyone who has read my crummy reviews should by now know I love, LOVE, good characters. Virgin Night is absolutely loaded with great characters. The four main characters have a dynamic that is reminiscent of the friendships in a Fred Dekker classic, think The Monster Squad and Night of the Creeps. These characters have personality, they have traumas, they have conversations with one another that make you laugh. The friends here feel organic, these are people who have bonded and grown together which makes for some really sweet moments. Speaking of the word sweet, I don’t know how Robertson does it but he’s managed to write two books (this, and My Zombie Sweetheart) that can take really brutal subject matter and fill it to the brim with sweetness. It’s like a raw steak filled with that good good maple cream they put on doughnuts. The heavy bits are heavy, but when Robertson hits you with a gut punch moment he always follows it with a small Candy or treat as a reward for getting through like the big strong Arnold Schwarzenegger in Predator that you are. Much like My Zombie Sweetheart, the plot and story here change and evolve to perfection. You won’t have any of it “figured out” until the last sentence and you will struggle to find a pausing point to go eat lunch. Better pack something you can eat while you’re reading I guess. Seriously, Virgin Night is for anyone who wants a fresh experience. K thx.

5/5 - SO FREAKING GOOD!

I’ll admit I’m 100% bias when it comes to Christopher Robertson’s books - I’ll read anything he writes - but I’m also truthful when I say every book I’ve read has been crazy good. From the prose, to the action sequences, blood and gore, style of storytelling… it’s all an experience to be had.

This book was all kinds of 90s nostalgia for me and I loved every minute of it. Video stores, movie posters, VCR! it’s all there, but most importantly the slasher story which fits the decade.

I can’t say much without giving away spoilers but I love Caleb so much and wish he was my best friend irl. All the twists and turns, supernatural elements, and bloody kills were chef’s kiss great.

As someone who was in high school a few years before this story takes place, it was easy to identify with the dynamic Robertson presents with this group of youngsters. As most of us have read stories of an unlikely group of friends standing up against an unspeakable evil, never before did I feel like I was actually standing there, a part of the gang. Woven with originality in the concept/origins of Virgin Night, characters developed in modern day realism, biting humor and no slacking on that lovely horror, Robertson continues to successfully build on his world of the Terrorscope. Like a coming of age horror movie you don’t want to end, Virgin Night hits all the right chords for those of us who think we’ve seen/read it all, but will have us coming back to this canon again and again. Siked to see what’s next to befall the residents of Cherry Lake. Such a great read!

I received this book, from the author In exchange for an honest review.

First thing I gotta say. This book was written like a movie script in places and it can be it’s vice as well. I loved the concept of a classic 1980’s - 1990's slasher something reminiscent of Friday the 13th or Halloween with the intensity built up in each scene. But with the constant stage / set directions I felt it detracted a little bit. On one hand or added to the visualization but on the other it took you out of the moment and made you have to re dive in if you will. This book was awesome all that aside and I enjoyed the “tree face killer” and this would for sure be a good Netflix / streaming movie I feel. I give this book 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Thank you Christopher, for the awesome book!

Another knock-out from Christopher. His ‘books that think they’re movies’ are a blast to read, and this 90s slasher is no different. Great kills, hugely captivating characters and some awesome twists keep you hooked all the way through to the end credits.

Before Valentine’s Day, there is… VIRGIN NIGHT!

If you’ve read anything by this author you know he has a very unique style of writing and this story stays true to that.

I absolutely loved this one. The perfect slasher with the right amount of violence, humor, and gore all the while managing to stay uniquely its own.

The dynamics between our main characters, Caleb, Vincent, and Michael had me DYING. Their friendships felt so real and honestly I can’t even pick a favorite between them because they all have such great character depth.

The slasher himself is terrifying, mysterious and downright relentless.

If you’re looking for a thrilling, gore filled slasher I 100% recommend checking this one out. It’s honestly one of my favorites to date.

Oh, hey, before I forget. A+ on all of the “your sister” jokes. Maybe Caleb actually is my favorite.

Enthralling

This was a fascinating read, it had me gripped from the first page and I didn't stop reading until the end. It was full of anticipation, enthralling excitement, devastating horror, amazing friendships, cruel hurt and evil intent. I loved the friendship between 3 young men from early childhood between, caleb, Michael and vincent. They what make this story so good. Each of their individual personalities bring different roles to the story, along with their families and backgrounds. The one night where devastation happens and causes a ripple effect. But not all is as it seems and you will have to read to find out, which I definitely recommend. You will laugh, be shocked, disgusted and even shed a tear. All of which I did, so if you enjoy all of that you'll love this read. Recommended!

THIS BOOOKKKKKKKKKKKKK...

IT was SO GOOD.

It was amazing.

It was perfect.

I’M SO SAD IT’S OVER....

This author has such a fun and unique voice and I have had so much fun reading his books. They are just a delight and so flipping creative. I can feel the love he has for his characters and he has made me love his characters so much too...

This book just feels so flipping nostalgic to me. It reminds me of the first time I watched a scary movie from the eighties. It has that fun and gory plotline, but the characters feel very modern and have just so much more depth and diversity. It is the scary movie I keep hoping for in this day and age, but still haven’t quite got. There are just so many fun nuances from different scary movies I love, but somehow this author has done them better by roping them all together.

Although the author takes so many hints and ideas from well known scary movies, he still manages to make it so unpredictable and to place so many twists I never saw coming.

How freaking refreshing...

Also.. the gore... Standing Ovation... so freaking well done.

Also... there were so many funny lines in this book. Caleb and Michael’s banter was just so freaking fun. These characters felt like my friends and I didn’t want to leave them at the end of this book. It broke my heart when I got to the last page because I just wanted more.

This book was so freaking fun and if you love horror movies, you should read it.

"We, the sons and daughters of Cherry Lake, know what it's like to live with evil on our doorstep"
.
Very mild spoilers/ review for Virgin Night by Christopher Robertson aka @kit_romero
.
Virgin Night opens by saying you are in the 1990s and you rent a movie which takes you back to February 13th 1989, Virgin Night. You are introduced to Deputy Jimmy Tran and his wife Debbie. It's early in the morning when Tran gets the call and he and his fellow officer Dickie are called out to the Williamson Farm. An unnamed force is tearing through Cherry Lake and the two deputies are the only thing stopping it... Then we jump forward to January 11th 1998, close to 15 years later. The Pastor of Cherry Lake, Creed Wallace, is determined to rid the town of the curse that plagues them and makes formal plans for a party this Virgin Night. Gradually we meet the teens of Cherry Lake, who are all fantastic, but what awaits them all on Virgin Night?...
.
I really like this one! It has a very solid opening scene and gets you hooked right from start! It has a dead nice setting both physical and in the timeline. The 1990s setting really works and Cherry Lake as a setting is great too. They way the story gradually builds up and you become invested in this story and these characters shows Chris' talent as a writer. You get to care and want to watch and see where this cast goes. You can tell Kit put his heart and soul into this. Caleb, Casey and Vincent were my favourite three! All the characters have their charms and add that special something to the plot. I can't say too much about the plot itself, but the way it evolves it feels very natural, very organic. If you are a fan of "Scream" or "Halloween" I would recommend reading this one, as it has elements of both of those in this and there's a lot to enjoy! A very solid horror story and one I really enjoyed reading and getting lost in! I don't want to say too much as spoilers but you are in for a treat with this one!
.
Overall 5/5 🍒

Spot on in nostalgia of 90s trends, slasher movies, and immature comedy. I loved all the series and movies back then, and the fact that Dawson's Creek and Buffy got a mention made my day.

It did take me a few chapters to settle into the writing style; it was quite back and forth swapping between characters. But once I'd established who was who, it was full steam ahead. Each of the characters had such distinct personalities, and I love the way it bought them closer together - I was completely invested in their futures.

The way the story was written, as if it was a movie, was something new but meant I could watch it all unfurl in my head perfectly. I loved the chapter titles; each one took me back to my school years. The balance between humour, horror, and gore (all the gore) was great - I thoroughly enjoyed it and, by the end, was calling out for more!

I will definitely be a good girl on Virgin Night, probably, ish... bring it slasher.

My final questions are: were you around in the 90s, and do you love horror? If yes, then why haven't you read this yet?

Be kind, rewind.

I think Christopher Robertson just isn’t for me. I was blown away with The Cotton Candy Massacre, but I just can’t with his other books.

Quick summary:

Cotton Candy Massacre 1 ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/ 5 stars: Amazing, no questions asked.

My Zombie sweetheart ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️/ 5 stars: Actually pretty good but one annoying character spoiled it for me.

Cotton Candy Massacre 2 ⭐️ ⭐️/ 5 stars: major step down from book 1, completely different feel, more comedic, can’t take it serious.

Lastly… Virgin Night ⭐️/ 5 stars: Earns a spot in my least favorite slashers of all time.

Virgin Night was about a 400 page book but felt well over 1,000 pages. I swear, The Stand by Stephen King felt shorter than this. The back story never ended! So much nonsense and flashbacks, this honestly didn’t feel like a 80s/90s slasher at all! It felt like an over drawn out teen drama with some kills sprinkled in.

I’m probably done reading Christopher Robertson, but Looking back, I will say this… he tries to be different with each book and has a little something for everybody. In my case, that little something was the original Cotton Candy Massacre.

"Pawns, toyed with for amusement of the God of Reels!"

Virgin Night by Christopher Robertson is everything a good 90s slasher should be and then some. I laughed out loud, almost cried, and got them hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. Robertson's writing is witty and pacey - nothing is pointless in this story. Full of nostalgic references and meta as shit, the use of filmmaking jargon had this teen slasher playing out not just in my head, but in front of my eyes - the words on the page transform perfectly into scenes from a grainy vhs horror. Gruesome, heartfelt, and twisty as hell, I honestly can't praise it enough. I'm still pissed off about *that scene* though, Kit 👀. Very much looking forward to seeing what Terrorscope Studios produces next!
