Well, damn. Now I see why it may be a good idea to wait until the full volume is available. For those of us (well, me) spoiled by a 1300 page 54-issues Saga binge followed a month later by a double issue this regular-size issue was a tiny morsel that was over almost as soon as it began.

And I want more! But I’m not sure I can muster enough restraint to wait a few more months.

Our heroes meet space pirates and we get to see King Robot again. And I still have no idea how TV-head people eat — but they must as Brobot was holding a half-eaten ice cream. The public demands to know!
“They say that the devotion a parent has for a child is nothing like actual addiction… but I don’t know. Seems like both can lead to making awful fucking decisions.”
There’s a bit of spotlight on parental feelings and addiction and the issues stemming from both, but with that cover I expected a bit more Squire. But hey, Hazel discovers the existence of guitars, and it’s quite promising.

But it’s so short! Too short. I mean, even a volume with 5-6 issues I tend to find too short, so this was just a tiny chapter compared to what I became used to in my not very long comics-reading career. And it’s hard to think of a chapter separately from the rest of the story. So I may just have to find a way to forget about these monthly releases and wait until the full volume is released. I think I like experiencing this story in longer chunks rather than tiny morsels better.

4 stars for this issue although this chapter is hard to rate on its own. Still 5 stars for the overall story.

Happy new Saga week to those who celebrate!
Well fuck me up, Brian K. Vaughan. This issue was really brief but sets up a lot that I'm excited to see play out, especially as a space band is about to enter the Saga mix and Hazel mentions guitar becoming her first addiction. Also we see King Robot again which never fails to make me laugh, and a cool little alligator dude in a suit. I think my favorite part of Saga is how they can throw the goofiest stuff in and it always works. They briefly touch upon the recurring theme of those in power keeping people down and poor in order to manipulate them into fighting all their wars, which has always been a great aspect for Saga to explore.
Anyways, this one is definitely a bridge issue to get us to something bigger which is the dilemma of reading each individual issue instead of waiting for the full volumes, but I have no self control and its this or cigarettes my friends.
Also, I should have known the moment I think "oh this character rules" something dramatic would happen. I was just thinking "hope this dude doesn't die" right when things went south. Get ready. The last frame is kind of great. And now I can't wait for more.

So I don't think it is a good idea for me to review every single one of these single issues as they come out, so maybe after today I can resist the temptation, since each issue cheats you out of a sense of the arc it is taking, but I'll say the writing, the artwork, the Hazel narration, all wonderful. We are on a pirate ship that seems like Willy Wonka-ville, and it begins so positively, but ends as darkly as any moment in the whole series. Vaughn apologizes for it in his afterword letter. He says he actually wrote it in 2020, when he was--as so many of us were--kind of spinning out of control, afraid, rudderless. As he says, he writes this stuff out of his own life and sense of the world, kind of in real time, as the emotional responses punch him in the face.

My favorite moment, after hearing American baseball is on again: Vaughn, a rabid Cleveland Indians fan, has some of the stoner pirates name their crappy wanna-be rock group Showing Bunt, which for you who are not sports fans occurs when a batter indicates he will maybe bunt, by altering his stance. Just a goofy, absurd point I appreciated.

My least fave moment: The threat the Pirate Skipper makes, which is almost unforgivable, almost unreadable, but again, this is Vaughn in the doldrums, seeing the worst of society's hateful impulses.

“You never know when or where your first addiction might find you. But there’s a chamber of your heart that will have been waiting for it since the day you were born.”

Going into this issue I was nervous. The cover, while stunningly beautiful, did not bode good news. Though the events unfolding aren't quite what I thought they were going to be, I can say with all certainty that having been nervous was not enough for the misery and foreboding that occurred.

And considering the little foreshadowing moments and little narrative keys, well, things are sounding way too ominous for my liking.

What I did find quite interesting was the way they spun the whole addiction and drugs elements to be much more than simple props. It really made everything feel a little more gritty, sure, but also closer to their bones and unmanageable, even when it was a good thing. Which is quite a great commentary, really.

I don't see any of this ending well and I am terrified, chilled to my bones, which is nothing new when referring to the last couple of issues of this series.

“They say that the devotion a parent had for a child is nothing like actual addiction… but I don’t know. Seems like both can lead to making awful fucking decisions.”

____________

Welp, I was right in one thing, it was wise to be nervous.

That escalated WAY too fast! My blood is running cold right now.

RTC.
____________

First off, I need a moment to express just how unreal and how amazed I am by that cover. It's just... stunning. The water droplets are captured so realistically that for a second I thought they were real.

Okay, still on the topic of the cover, it makes me nervous, and want to prepare for the pain that this issue seems to bring. It does not bode anything nice for my sanity, it's all I'm saying.

As always, I am excited to get more content in this world.

Another great entry in the series.

Somehow, though, I feel like they are glossing over Perhaps they'll go back over that later?

I've pre-ordered the next one and I'm interested in seeing what happens next.

*Read 2.23.22, removed reading dates from GR so this doesn't count towards my reading goal of the year.*

Well, I officially am getting back into floppies thanks to Saga. I stopped going to my original LCS for many reasons, chiefly it was getting too expensive and the guy who owned it was a dick to the workers, but I found a new one that seems pretty cool (and also has more stuff to look through, and also seemingly has yugioh tournaments which I highkey want to get into). I went to sell the Invincible library editions I had since the series never got fully collected that way and I liked the story enough I set up a pull list for Saga, Hellboy/mignolaverse titles, and anything Black Hammer. I might have to check out the new ongoing titles from DC and Marvel too, but I don’t want to start spending a ton of money on single issues again lol

But I digress. This was another good issue, just felt like it went by so quickly. Can’t wait for the next one since apparently it’ll feature more of the Will. Also loved seeing King Robot with his huge fucking flatscreen head lmfao

"My mother never trusted people who were too enthusiastic about their jobs. She preferred anyone who's biggest career goal was quitting".

Shit just got real! You could throw some pirates in anything and get an extra star out of me.

So the hiatus ended long ago, but I imposed my own so I could have a glorious Saga binge. The writing and the art in these are so good but it does mean shorter issues.

56: Just when you thought the pirates were all ice cream and media piracy, the moose goes and throws out a threat like that.

4/5

I'm sorry, but it is hard to take a scene of a father mourning his son seriously when you decide that the fact that because he is the King of his TV-headed people means that his head is a GIANT FLATSCREEN TV.

2,5/5. This one felt more like a true Saga than the previous one, I admit that. Still, I find myself unable to truly enjoy it. Maybe too much time has pass. Maybe I grow out of it or tire of it. I don’t know, but the magic just isn’t there for me. I will get on with two or three more issue, see what will happen to the story and to myself, but for the first time I think of dropping this series.

Not rating since I don’t rate single issues in ongoing stories.
Still no Petrichor, unfortunately, but I can’t wait to see where the story goes from here

This episode seemed especially short :( I am excited to see how Hazel's love affair with music and the guitar develops. This one ends on a pretty decent cliff-hanger so it'll be interesting to see how they escape from yet another ambush/disaster.
