Saw this short issue just now (32 pages!) and I do what I do: Read it all at once while holding my breath. The cover indicates that this issue begins some back story on Will delivering proof of the death of his bounty target, some three years ago. Because issue #54 jumped three years ahead from volume 9, and we are missing some what-happened.

We also learn why it is that Alana and her children are not slaughtered by the quasi-hippie drug-smuggling Skipper of the ship they are riding on, the same skipper that threatened violence on them at the conclusion of issue #56. Hmm, how do I say this without revealing anything directly? Well. . . as it turns out Alana visited her doctor to find a way to better hide her Landfall identity, as it has become increasingly difficult to navigate alien worlds.

"You soar even when grounded."

Though that soaring is made more difficult because Alana is now a single mother of two, even acknowledging her "business partner's" help. What would you do to ensure the safe passage of your children? This is Forever War Multiverse. Like us, she needs money. What are the variety of things parents might do to make sure their families survive? Oh, wait, are you getting judgmental about what other might people do, and in particular refugees (as they are) as you read this from the same kind of comfortable couch I am reading this?! You better not! You never know what you might face in case the unimaginable happens and you become part of the 20+million refugees and what they for-real face.

It's good to finally go back to the immediate aftermath of the last issue before the break. I'm looking forward to what's going to happen next.

*Removed reading dates so this comic won't be added to my reading challenge. Read 3.23.22.

Well THAT'S not what I expected.

In a good way, I swear.

More Cat, please. You tease me with this cover and then

And I'm still not sure about PLEASE SAGA GODS (aka BKV & FS). PLEASE.

In the last issue Alana was faced with a serious ultimatum. This issue, we get the back story of how she was able to get out of that situation. Pretty cool.

A woman who soars, even when grounded.

I don't normally do quotes for these, but that one hit home. The cover on this might be my favourite yet (until the next one, naturally), and as short as I'm still feeling these are, I'm loving getting to go back to touring the insane universe these two have cooked up.

It's not just the emotional weight of the backstory that I appreciate, but the sense of times and hardships gone by since Marko's death, which makes you feel like the "saga" has gone on for our characters even during the comic's hiatus. Once again, BKV brings forth seemingly inconsequential details from volumes past into the plot in pivotal ways that display his storytelling prowess.

The Will and Gwen have not quite been engaging me thus far. But the last part holds promise and danger as we find out there's more to the new character than meets the eye. Lastly, if there's one thing that didn't ring true, it was Hazel's nonchalance right after her father's death, especially since the two were close. But with Alana, Vaughn has developed a character with emotional range, whose strength and bravery continually astounds:

A little backwards look down memory lane.

More Will and Lying cat, a little progress with Alana‘s newest job, family and what you do to keep it safe and happy.

I could have done without the seven pages of fan letters and promotions for other comics. More Saga would have been nicer.

“Simple blood test or half-awake lying cat will still reveal what you really are […] A woman who soars. Even when grounded.”

Okay, that went better than I was expecting... which is a little disappointing.

We get a bit of backstory on what has been going on in the years we missed and though it makes sense for it to be explained I would have rather kept going without any flashbacks. It just felt like the mystery of those years was well addressed and explored as it was and, honestly, I think we could have figured it out without. Though I have faith that the flashbacks won't be overused as they have never been.

Either way, the tensions continue to mount in this one and I'm starting to think that what is to come is going to be just devastating.

Bombazine is becoming a more interesting and layered character, which is cool, and I cannot wait to get more on him.

With this issue, it feels more like the series is taking off again after getting all of us reoriented to where the characters are now.

I have not previously read Saga in the individual issue format. It's frustrating! I want long gulps, not these tiny sips. But since I can't have that, I am beyond thrilled at the brief return of Lying Cat and The Will, and am really looking forward to number 58.

There wasn't a lot of action in this issue - more set up for the next installment. Aside from that there were some emotional scenes that I enjoyed a lot and I'm looking forward to seeing where things go with the current storylines. The notes in the back of the issue were hilarious, as BKV talks about getting omicron over the holidays and being stuck by himself eating an entire cake. They also included fan letters with responses and I died laughing. They were the best part of this issue in my opinion!

My life is now measured by the monthly Wednesday of picking up my latest Saga issue.

And back is The Will with Lying Cat as Alana embarks on a "little errand" leaving Hazel and Squire with Bombazine. It's got that beautiful visual appeal in setting and character, the abortionist wolf creature, a conversation about wings, and Marko's *gasp* skull.

Oh Vaughan and Staples, how I love thee and the creative brains and hands!

WARNING!

Do not read this comic book series unless you are absolutely okay with the fact that you will become so addicted that you will avoid life itself just to read the next chapter! I’m literally sitting in my new job training and reading Saga! Oh well, it’s worth it!

Saga 57

This issue jumps back to a few weeks after Marco's death, in issue 54. Alana went to Dr. Endwife's "clinic" and got her already damaged wings cut off. In present time, thanks to that, the drug smuggler/pirate, on who's boat her and her kids are on, doesn't kill her. Instead, he gives her a job to do. So, she says goodbye to her kids and Bombazine and leaves to go do it. In this issue we also see The Will going to King Robot, in order to lie to him about Marco killing Prince Robot IV.
This was a very good issue. It was very interesting seeing what happened in the (almost) immediate aftermath of Marco's death and I liked how the story jumps back and forth between Alana and her kids and The Will. The part of the story that takes place on the pirate space ship, with Alana, Bombazine, Hazel and Prince Robot IV's son is very fun to read. Hazel is becoming more and more independent as the story continues and she starts making friends. We've been reading her story since she was a baby, so it's really amazing to see how much she has grown and in such a well written and patiently paced way. In this issue we also seem to get a bit more into Bombazine's character. He seems very interesting and I can't wait for us to get to know him a bit more.
The artwork by Fiona Staples is gorgeous as always. The environments always look amazing and the characters are beautiful. Her style is incredible and it has clearly evolved since the first issues of the series. At this point she's undoubtedly one of the best artists in the industry, with every panel looking like a painting and each page being structured incredibly.
Overall, this was an enjoyable issue. The story is clearly building up to something and I can't understand exactly what, but I'm excited.

My only problem with this issues is that it's too short.

I'm so glad we saw Ghüs again, even if it was a memory.

I think Bombazine will turn out to be a badass. But not in a good way, maybe. We shall see.

Welcome Back!

Saga is definitely still one of my favorite long-running graphic novel series. I initially picked it up on Hoopla and I read through every issue that was out at the time in the span of a couple of days. I then found out that the series was on hiatus for years, and was absolutely devasted. But this past year when I heard that Saga, was coming back, I was beyond elated. I look forward to each and every single issue coming out. I read them as they come out but I also hope to go back much later and read them all in a bind up and see the story in one complete work. But for now, let’s talk about issue 57!

SPOILERS AHEAD

It’s time to see what some of our favorite people or maybe your least favorite people did during the three-year time skip. In this issue, we get to check in on Gus (OMG so cute), the Will and the lying cat, and a few more characters. In the immediate aftermath of the death of Marko, we see what the Will and the lying cat do with their newfound power within the war. We also get the opportunity to see a bit of development in Alana’s plot line!

This issue felt very short but it definitely filled in a lot of the gaps of what took place right after Marko’s death (which I would like to note that during the entire hiatus, I refused to believe that he actually died, and now that the story is back seeing that he is my heart has literally broken all over again). I loved having the opportunity to visit Gus again (he will always be a favorite character of mine)! Additionally, I always find it interesting when we get to visit Prince Robot’s kingdom. I am excited to see what might come next!
