Tinker Bell, banished from her homeland for doing the unthinkable, selling the hottest drug in Neverland—pixie dust—wants absolution.
Determined to find a way home, Tink doesn’t hesitate to follow the one lead she has, even if that means seducing a filthy pirate to steal precious gems out from under his…hook.
Captain Hook believes he’s found a real treasure in Tink. That is, until he recovers from her pixie dust laced kiss with a curse that turns the seas against him. With his ship and reputation at the mercy of raging storms, he tracks down the little minx and demands she remove the curse. Too bad she can’t.
However, the mermaid queen has a solution to both of their problems, if Tink and Hook will work together to retrieve a magical item for her.
As they venture to the mysterious Shrouded Isles to find the priceless treasure, their shared nemesis closes in. However, his wrath is nothing compared to the realization that achieving their goal may mean losing something they never expected to find—each other.

First Impressions
So my dynamic with this story already had a bit of a running start. I’ve been a huge fan of Megan’s stories since we first met years ago. She has this incredible way of weaving sexual tension and fiery passion into a fantasy world that takes my breath away–and kinda makes me press my thighs together. Romance readers know what I’m talking about!
But going into this story, already a huge fan of Megan’s work, was counter-balanced by the fact that Peter Pan is probably my least favorite fairy tale. I’ve never been a fan of the lost boys concept, and Hook has always been portrayed as a douche-waffle (with the exception of Once Upon a Time).
So before I cracked open the first page I was so excited (and a tiny bit dreading). So let me say this loud and clear…
Second Star to the Left is the best retelling of any Neverland story.
What I Loved About Second Star to the Left
First, the romance was HOT!
Let’s start with Tinker Bell. She’s always been portrayed as a bratty, spoiled, nauseating character who throws fits or is very self-absorbed. But right off the page of Megan’s tale we find a complex woman selling her dust–and in a way her soul–to save her cousin. Tink puts her life on the line, gets banished by her homeland, and continues to put herself at greater risk to protect the family she loves. Right away Van Dyke weaves a spell of empathy around Tink’s, who’s about to make the best and worst mistake of her life.
Enter Captain Hook, a swaggering stud of a pirate with a roguish smile for every girl that catches his eye. His first meeting with Tink has all the makings of a fiery one-night stand, but a bit of pixie dust puts Hook flat on his back and his prized possession out of his reach.
What I love about Hook’s character is that peeling back the layers of this roguish pirate reveals a man with a tragic past, deep-seated trauma, and a love of family that transcends bloodlines.
And while I love the two main characters and their saucy dynamic, my absolute favorite character is Smee.
This is another character that’s always portrayed as a real weasel, but in Van Dyke’s tale Smee is the tall, handsome, loyal first mate with a girl in every port, a strong love of family, and absolutely no boundaries when it comes to sex in a bar. He’s got such a fun personality, a gentle spirit, and yet he’ll be the first one to dive in the ocean if someone gets knocked overboard.
The World between Tortuga and Neverland
The other thing I absolutely love about Van Dyke’s stories is how subtly she builds the world around her stellar cast of characters. With a subtle grace she pulls focus to the sparks of new love, but quietly drops in building blocks of primal beauty and weaving an immersive, emotional experience for readers.
The road from Tortuga to Neverland feels so natural and organic, you could almost look at a starry sky and sense Hook’s homeland within reach.
If Peter Pan had an origin story...
…this book should be it. None of this kids running around wild and “somehow” surviving, nor little kids taking on a shipload of angry pirates and turning them into fools. Megan Van Dyke’s story resets the balance of Neverland, turning an imaginary playland into a world that lives and breathes through every scene. Highly recommend!
I had the privilege of beta reading this novel, and I am excited to finally have the chance to share my superlatives with the world!
Packed with steamy romance, adventure, and an unforgettable cast of characters, Megan Van Dyke’s clever reimagining of Peter Pan, centering Tinker Bell and Captain Hook, is an absolute treasure. The writing is effortless and draws you in immediately, leaving you fully immersed in a fantastical world that feels both familiar and fresh.
The chemistry and tension between Tink and Hook makes for a swoon-worthy enemies-to-lovers romance filled with conflict and spice, as well as many tender and heartfelt moments to deepen the story. The love scenes in Second Star To The Left are among the best I’ve ever read—emotional and passionate with plenty of interiority as well as heat.
Along with the romance, there’s a healthy dose of adventure, humor, and suspense as Hook and Tink are forced to work together to right some of the wrongs from each of their pasts. This book left me on the edge of my seat, wondering what would happen next. It truly draws you in completely!
Van Dyke’s writing is a treat for the senses. You won’t want to miss this stunning debut.
Second Star to the Left is such an amazing book. It is so easy to read. It has a great flow, is addictive and it completely draws you in. I have always been a huge Disney fan. So any retelling is tugging at my heartstrings. And Megan did an incredible job!! I loved it from start to finish.
The book starts off with Tink going after Hook. He recently stole the Heart of Fire and she needs to get her hands on it. She made a deal with Queen Titania from the merfolk. If she gives her the Heart of Fire, she'll get a black pearl in return.
Tink gave up her fairy dust to save her cousin and best friend Lily. She got banned from Sylvanna Vale, her home. Her bracelet broke and in order to fix it and find her way home, she needs a black pearl. A black pearl can fix anything.
She seduces Hook and is able to give a dose of fairy dust and steal the Heart of Fire. But even though her seduction was a means to an end, she actually felt something. She felt a bond with Hook. But Tink has only one goal, and that goal is to go home.
Hook is able to catch her and together they go to Titania. Still doesn't give her the pearl. She needs to steal the scale of a leviathan. And if Hook wants to get his curse lifted he must help her. And that is when they set off and go on this quest together.
Hook clasped the iron handcuff around her wrist. "Hey! What?" Tink jerked away. Betrayal, worse than when he'd taken her from the treehouse, flashed across the face of the woman wearing his clothes. "Can't have you flying away in the night. Or slitting my throat. You'll have room to move, to get to the chamber pot, that chair, the nightstand." Tink flushed pink. "Filthy, louse, no-good pirate!"
I love just how fiery they both are. And how much they push and pull each other. Their banter, their longing was just so utterly addictive to read.
"And now I'm stuck with these filthy pirates," she lamented. A deliciously deep voice broke the peaceful night and vibrated a long her skin. "Who's filthy?"
This quote above had me grinning like an idiot. I love how different Hook is from the movie and book. He is an honorable man. With a past that has tainted him. He carries the weight and responsibility of a captain. And takes care of his crew with his entire heart. Smee, his second in command, is a fantastic character and I love his presence in this book.
I also love that Tink isn't self obsessed in this book. She has an open heart, she cares for those she loves. And she is such a fighter and loving person. And her love story with Hook was written top notch.
"What do you want?" He leaned closer, his forehead near touching hers. She stared at him. His gaze caught hers, savoring the desire simmering there, the sheen of lust looming just beyond the ale-induced blur. Would she taste like the drink he'd chugged or the sweet, floral honey he tasted the first time he'd claimed her lips? "You."
*
Heat raced across her cheeks and up to the tips of her ears. She grabbed at the sheets, covering herself and searching the small room for Hook, but he wasn't there. He'd... they'd.. oh holy revered elders, they'd almost... -When I fuck you, and I plan to, I want you sober, eager.-
My heart broke for Hook several times. His character growth and development had my entire heart. The boys as well. They add so much to the story. The fact that all of them, almost every character, found a place of belonging. They found a family. This book has such a big heart, and that is what I love most about it.
*MINOR SPOILER ALERT IN THE NEXT PARAGRAPH* And the fact that Tink calls him by his true name. Oh my heart. I felt that resonate in my soul the first time she called him that!
There are still a few loose ends. Will there be a sequel? Or do we as readers must imagine what happens next.
Overall such an amazing book. Absolutely loved it. 5 huge stars from me for Tink, Hook and the rest of the amazing characters!
He is the main love interest in this book! This is a new adult fantasy romance Peter Pan retelling focusing on Hook and Tink!
Tink is a pixie, but she's close enough to human size that with a little ingenuity she can pass for one. Tink lives in the pixie realm, but she likes to be a trouble maker and go and visit the human world. To get there, she has to go through basically what we know as fairy circles. ANNNDDD she ends up getting stuck in the human world. She is trying to get back home up to and including making deals with mermaids and stealing from a notorious pirate.
This book was so much better than I was expecting and had a nice bit of spice!
“if you thought to leave me now, i might tie you to the bed again.” “filthy pirate.” “aye, but you love me anyway.”
this was such a cute retelling of Peter Pan. i loved this version of Tinker Bell and Captain Hook. because of this book i'll never not see Hook and Tink as endgame. boom. a ship has been born.
i think the only thing holding me back from rating this book higher is that the transition from enemies-to-lovers was a TOUCH abrupt for me. then again, i wouldn't classify this book as a true enemies-to-lovers, cause Hook was obsessed with Tink the moment he locked eyes on her. our boy was a GONER for his pixie. which, while appreciated, did take the fun out of this trope. also, ngl, i was hoping for rougher around the edges Hook.
that said, i'm definitely looking forward to what Megan Van Dyke has in store for us next!! and overall, i highly recommend SSTTL. it has it all, Tinker Bell being her crafty self, Hook being the dashing rouge that he is, a sweet and slightly steamy romance, a touching bromance between Hook and Smee, evil pirates, dangerous mermaids, a treasure hunt, planks being walked, and of course a quick cameo from Peter himself.
This was my first time reading a Peter Pan retelling and I am HOOKED!!! 😍 This is a steamy romantic retelling, where the villain gets the girl (Hook x Ting retelling)! Now I also need to read more books where the villain gets the girl ...
I love how Megan Van Dyke gave a completely new twist to the story, Black Beard as the evil croc was perfect! This was also a very emotional read, found myself with tears in my eyes in a couple of scenes. A Perfect mix of magic, romance and fantasy.
Hook might be a pirate, one of the most notorious captains sailing Neverland, however he also has a soft and unexpected side that had me falling for him quickly. Tink was also a great female lead, she's strong and doesn't want or need a man's help, she will do everything to save her cousin and see her family again.
Thank you to the author for gifting me a copy for review!
Fantasy brilliance of the highest form, this story will transport you to the mystical world of Neverland - with adult twists that will leave readers begging for more. __________________ 'Second Star to the Left' is an adult fantasy novel, set in an entirely new and exciting version of Neverland. The characters we know by name from the classical tale have been reimagined and crafted anew in this retelling, where we follow the mischievous yet homesick Tinker Bell and her new acquaintance, the dashing and devilish Captain Hook.
Brought together by feud, curses and an unexpected mutual treasure hunt style quest, these two must work together to obtain their common goal. Putting aside their differences and opinions of each other seems out of the question - until an undeniable passion and some new understandings begin to change everything. __________________ Utterly enraptured from the very first page, this book was everything I have ever wanted in a fairytale retelling. As a massive fan of the Peter Pan story and the Tinker Bell character for many, many years, I was beyond excited by the premise of this book and completely hopeful that it would deliver - which it did. Completely.
Enemies to lovers, found family, and 'touch her and you die' are just a few of the brilliantly executed and popular tropes that you'll find in this story. Loveable side characters, wonderfully crafted mythical creatures and excellently written steam and spice (and I mean STEAM and SPICE) are all found within these pages, guaranteed to capture, hold and completely occupy your attention (even well after you turn the final page). Fans of the original Peter Pan story will also thoroughly enjoy Megan's take on Peter and the Lost Boys, the Neverland world and, my particular favourite, how a hand stealing 'croc' looms as the cleverly integrated villain.
I am so deeply appreciative to have received an ARC for this book, and will absolutely be adding a physical copy to my shelves upon its release in February. I highly encourage all fantasy, romance and mature fairy tale fans to pick up this book and lose yourself in the story.
Megan Van Dyke’s fabulously addictive debut is a fun, action-packed and utterly swoon-worthy enemies to lovers romance that I absolutely fell in love with!
Focusing on Tinkerbell and Captain Hook, this imaginative retelling of Peter Pan was the absolute perfect read for February, it’s got Pixies, Pirate, Mermaids, Witches and a super satisfying romance that takes the only one bed trope to the high seas (and some other rather creative locations too)
Tink, banished from her homeland for selling Pixie Dust (the hottest drug in Neverland), is determined to find a way home and doesn’t hesitate to follow her only lead—even if it means seducing a filthy pirate to steal precious gems out from under his… hook.
Captain Hook believes he’s found a real treasure in Tink… until she renders him unconscious with a Pixie Dust laced kiss—stealing his most valuable prize and leaving him with a curse that turns the seas against him. With his ship and reputation on the line, Hook tracks her down and demands she lift the curse. Too bad she can’t.
but, the Mermaid queen has a solution—work together to find her an irreplaceable magical item and she’ll solve both of their problems. As they set off to the mysterious Shrouded island to find the priceless treasure, their shared nemesis begins to close in… but that’s nothing compared to the realisation that achieving their goal mag mean losing each other forever.
First, I just have to say that I absolutely LOVED the writing which is fast paced, full of humour, plot twists and a deliciously satisfying romance that I didn’t want to end. It also has just the right level of spice and some really compelling characters that I found thoroughly entertaining, particularly Smee who soo very different (and sexier) than the original and definitely needs his own book.
Tinkerbell was a feisty (and endearingly sassy) protagonist who was waay more likeable than the overly jealous and rather annoying original. Hook, likewise was super compelling and I never thought I’d say this about Hook (aside from the one in OUAT) but he’s utterly swoon-worthy with a cocky, bad boy (with a heart of gold) attitude that I absolutely loved.
The romantic tension and slow burn build up was ✨chef’s kiss✨ absolute perfection, I also really enjoyed their flirty interactions with one another that were both extremely entertaining and funny at times.
I loved that this retelling didn’t Center on Peter (he makes an appearance but it’s fairly short) as most recent retellings seem to and feel having Tinkerbell as a protagonist gave us a better narrative overall. I also nice to see Hook in a new, less villainous light too.
Overall, this is a fun, light and fairly quick romantic fantasy with some spice and a whole lot of magic that I definitely recommend.
Also thanks to City Owl Press and Netgalley for the e-arc.
*Thank you for this e-ARC in exchange for an honest review!*
Okay… this was disappointing. I honestly expected to enjoy this more than I did.
The beginning was a solid 3 stars. I’m a huge fan of Peter Pan and although a Hook-Tinker Bell romance isn’t something that I’d usually go for… I was willing to keep an open mind.
The author’s writing was easy, fun and enjoyable. This book was fast-paced and there was always something happening. I’m not a fan of slow books, so I enjoyed this aspect.
However, I wasn’t convinced by the romance. It only seemed to be based on physical attraction and that was pushed in my face way too much. Not to mention that it made me incredibly uncomfortable. I wish there was more attention on the plot rather than intimacy. I never wanted to DNF a book so badly specifically because of this. It was all physical and then 2% of “thank you for saving my life”. I wished there was more emphasis on her brains.
Another thing that bothered me was that they found the scale easily. The witch gave them a riddle — okay — but are you really telling me that it was just that easy? Save for the fog? Like Tinker Bell just managed to spot everything coincidentally? It was boring and anticlimactic.
And then… Black Beard was his father? Peter his brother? No, you lost me there. It just didn’t make sense. MAJOR info dump and so rushed. I lost interest half way and I’m guilty of skimming through the rest.
The sad part is that although I was skeptical of the romance aspect, it had potential. The witch’s riddle could’ve been more cleverly done. If you wanted to make Black Beard his father and Peter his brother, you could have done it in a way where we have that “Aha, that makes sense!” moment. But we didn’t have that.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was lucky enough to read an early copy of this book, and I flew through it. It's fast-paced, witty, and romantic. I'm the kind of reader who needs conflict to keep the story going, and there was plenty! But in the end, it was the characters that engaged me the most. They felt real to me and I was sad to say goodbye to them when the story ended.
This book was the Peter Pan retelling that I never knew I needed!
Tink is a pixie, banished from her homeland for selling her pixie dust to save her cousin from the wretched Captain Blackbeard. She encounters Captain Hook for the first time when she steals something from him for the mermaid queen, hoping the gain her trust so she may give her a black pearl that will allow her to go home.
Hook was instantly charming and a very swoon worthy love interest. I couldn't help but picture him as Colin O'Donoghue, who plays Captain Hook in the TV Show Once Upon a Time.
Tink was a very fun and loveable character and the enemies to lovers romance between her and Hook was a joy to read!
The writing style was absolutely gorgeous and flowed really nicely. This high sea's adventure was fast paced and had me completely entranced from the very first chapter. I think fans of Sarah J Maas and Olivia Wildenstein will devour this beautifully written romantic fantasy!
I highly look forward to reading more books by Megan Van Dyke!
Note: I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
4.5/5. Captain Hook + Tinker Bell enemies-to-lovers romance goodness.
What a retelling! Second Star to the Left by Megan Van Dyke was a fun read that hooks you from chapter one with vivid characters and a smooth, fluid writing style. It’s so easy to forget you’re turning pages.
There’s a femme fatale seduction scene in the opening pages that’s just wicked good, and it’s a great character-establishing intro to Van Dyke’s Tinker Bell + Capt. Hook.
There’s also sassy banter. A good ol’ caveman carry. Naked adventure time *waggles eyebrows.* But a lot of tender moments, too, made all the sweeter because of how things begin between them.
Without spoiling anything, there’s a big “trust fall” moment that I loved, because of Hook’s complete faith in Tink. It’s a moment when he could’ve easily said, “No, don’t. You’re too hurt, too weak,” but he doesn’t because she said she could do it. He trusts and respects that she knows her own body and capabilities.
I also loved that they are a couple that rescues each other (several times over), and anytime Tink’s wings glow, because she is happy 🥺😭😍
I enjoyed this book very much, and its ending demonstrates how love is a strength, not a weakness. And home is where the heart is.
This is not the Neverland you know. It’s the Neverland you didn’t know you needed.
I wished there was a little more to the betrayal plot. I liked the twist. But the reasons didn’t land for me. Too much of a 180.
The OTHER twist worked for me. There were a few times when I thought Croc/Blackbeard might’ve had a humanizing moment, but he never really got there, and I kinda wish he did, just to make him more complicated (I like complicated).
I also wished for a more 3D portrayal of Hook as an amputee. More of his daily challenges, how he adapts. Routine stump & prosthesis care. Atrophy/skin breakdown considerations. Prosthesis design details & suspension method. What his recovery would have entailed. There was a bedroom scene when his stump ‘disappears’ partway through, something akin to “white-room syndrome,” which I don’t think was intentional at all, but it was something I noticed. If his stump was something Hook was self-conscious about and continuing to hide, I would have liked for Tink to have noticed and to have continued trying to reassure him/build up his confidence.

Thank you Megan Van Dyke & City Owl Press for the ARC!
A fun, sexy, swashbuckling read. Hook is a swoony, caring, protective surprise of a hero, and he meets his match in the dauntless and sassy Tink, who'll go toe-to-toe with a pirate any day. Magical creatures, seafaring adventures, plot twists and turns, steamy kisses (and more!) await in this exciting, reimagined version of the story of Captain Hook and Tinker Bell.
This was such an enjoyable read, and ticked a lot of boxes for me. An enemies to lovers, fantasy romance between Captain Hook and Tinkerbell and acts as a sort of prequel to Peter Pan.
Tink is trying to find a way back home to the Sylvan Vale and Hook wants the power to defeat his enemy, Blackbeard. To do this they team up and make a deal with Queen Titania to find a magical object for her. In return she will give them the Black Pearl, an object that fixes what is broken.
Hook is pretty much a goner for Tink straight away and believes she has cursed him to have these feelings. I loved Hook's characterisation, it reminded me a great deal of Killian from 'Once Upon A Time'. He was so charming and roguish and exactly how I picture him. Tink was feisty with a quick temper but a big heart. I loved their interactions and the banter between them. Also the steamy scenes were fabulous and were both hot and tender.
I loved the themes of found family within the story as well as the main romance. The world felt familiar yet otherwordly which was a good mix. There were some good twists and turns to raise the stakes and I love how both the hero and heroine had to question everything about themselves, their mission and what they believed in.
I would happily read a follow up, especially wanting to know what happened to the boat full of people at the end that vanished. I mean, I know what it's setting up but I just want more. Lol
SECOND STAR TO THE LEFT was a great Peter Pan retelling featuring a charming Captain Hook and feisty Tinker Bell. I loved their banter and the way they tried to resist each other but couldn't. The story was fast paced and easy to read and I was pulled into this version of Neverland right away.
Hook was definitely portrayed as more of a gentleman pirate and he had me swooning from the beginning. He was surprisingly honorable, loyal to his crew who were more like family, and an absolute charmer who gave off great Captain Jack Sparrow vibes. As for Tink, she was determined, compassionate, and full of fire. She never hesitated to speak her mind and go toe-to-toe with Hook. Together they had so much chemistry and steam and I loved watching them fall for each other.
The side characters were all a delight, especially cinnamon roll Smee and the badass Captain Cressida and her ship of all female pirates. I'm really looking forward to reading more in this series and seeing what Megan Van Dyke does with some other fairy tales.

3⭐️
When I found out that this book was a Peter Pan retelling that focuses on Captain Hook and Tinker Bell I immediately knew that I had to read it and I’m glad that I did.
Second Star to the Left was honestly a very cute retelling. The characters were all really interesting and I loved the friendship between all of them. I wish that Hook and Tink had more of a slow burn romance because their relationship felt like they went from strangers to instant love. Considering that the book is short I can’t blame the author for rushing it a bit though.
The book was still very action packed and there was almost no place for boredom. James and Tink were a really adorable couple and I liked reading about them. If you want to read a good fairytale retelling that is also fast paced I recommend you try and read this!
I'm a big fan of Peter Pan stories and this one takes us down a whole different route following Tinker Bell and a young James Hook. Tink is in trouble and what's worse she has to team up with her enemy and filthy pirate, Captain Hook.
So what do you want in a book? Enemies to lovers? Check. Non-cheesy steam? Check. A high seas pirate adventure? Check. I loved this book. I'm not a romance reader by any means, and I've found a lot of the romance books that I've read to be eye-rollingly cheesy. This was not the case here! The love scenes were very well-written and I didn't cringe once! That's a huge success alone. However, I don't think I can categorize this entirely as a romance. I also really enjoyed the story, and the adventure was a lot of fun too. I devoured this book! Definitely recommended!
Thank you to the author and the publishers for this ARC.

I’ve been waiting and waiting for this book. This is the one book I couldn’t wait to have my hands on. Earlier this week she posted an ARC sign up on Instagram and I’m pretty sure I was one of the first few people to get on there.
You meet Tink in the beginning trying to seduce Captain Hook so she could steal a necklace. Well, Captain Hook kidnaps her three months later because there’s a curse on him, or two, or is it lust for the second one? You embark on a journey between Tink and Hook. Enemies to lovers. But only one looked at the other as the enemy, the other with love.
The author really captured the essence of Tink’s attitude and it’s spunky. She gave Hook a soft side but only for Tink.
I absolutely love anything Tinker Bell related. So when she popped up with this I knew I would have to read this.
I had the pleasure of beta-reading Second Star to the Left and fell in love with it. I was on vacation that weekend and spent every second of my downtime in the hotel devouring this steamy romance adventure. It is a must read with magical, unforgettable characters!
Oh wow!! Kudos to Megan for this fabulous debut book!
It's got pirates, adventure, and a little smut! I love the whole enemies to lovers that Hook and Tink have going on. The adventure is so well written and creative. The world building is great - I felt like I could see everything!! The characters are well defined! Smee is adorable! An absolute cinnamon roll!!! The smut is hot and tasteful!!
Overall, I absolutely loved this book! I read it all in one night! I couldn't put it down!! The writing flows smoothly and is really well done. Some of the twists were predictable and some weren't. It was an exciting read that I highly recommend!! It's definitely a grown up Neverland!
A huge thank you to the author Megan Van Dyke for sending me an eArc of this book. And I mean a huge thank you because I love, love, loved it!
I was a huge Peter Pan fan as a child and this book is Neverland for adults. Tinker Bell is trying to make her way home and must win a favour from the mermaids by stealing a jewel and returning it to them. Who does have to steal it from? Captain James Hook.
The world is vivid and the characters are vibrant, they feel fresh even though they are already so well known. The romance is 😚 and blends well with the plot which is very well written. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for them.
I devoured Van Dyke's steamy action packed debut! Enemies to lovers is one of my ALL of my favorite tropes and let me just say that Megan CRUSHED it with this book. I honestly hated when it ended because I loved it so much. The entire novel was *chef's kiss* and brilliantly written. I will no doubt be purchasing a physical copy of this for my favorites shelf once it releases. Megan Van Dyke just became a one-click author for me and I am eagerly awaiting her next book!
I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
“In a hurry, love?” His voice was thick, hoarse. Gods, he loved the way she scowled when he called her that. It was one reason he kept using it.”
I was provided an ARC by the author for this book for an honest review.
I’m so glad I got this early. It was exactly what I wanted from an adult retelling. The spice was exquisite, the plot pulled in the perfect amount of lore within Neverland and made it fresh and new. For those whose favorite characters are also Captain Hook and Tinker Bell, and you secretly ship them (especially when Hook looks similarly to the OUAT Captain Hook aka Killian Jones - that’s who I pictured at least) - this book is for you.
I devoured this book.
It’s no surprise that I’d love this book, as anyone that knows me knows I love pirates and pixies (or any fae) in equal measure - so this book sings to my soul. It’s pacing kept me reading, and I loved ALL the side characters (especially the residents of Coconut Cove).
If you’re looking for a fun escape with familiar characters in a revamped way, some seriously good sexually explicit scenes, and all the pining and craving between two characters- do not hesitate to pick this book up. It’s a fast read (because you won’t want to put it down), and it’s just the book to curl up with and lose yourself in.
“The kiss was everything, salvation and damnation all at once.”
Second Star to the Left had absolutely everything I could want in a retelling! While the story of Neverland and Peter Pan is well known I still felt like this book was fresh and inventive. I completely fell in love with Tink and Captain Hook. They were wonderful together and I couldn’t read this book fast enough. Reading SSTTL is like visiting old friends and realizing they are even better than you last saw them. Highly recommend it!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book. My opinions are my own!
I'm a sucker for fairytale retellings so when I got approved to read this Hook/Tinkerbell retelling, that made me very happy! A twist on the tale where Tinkerbell is cast out of her fairy homeland? And has to stand her ground with the fearsome pirate Hook? I was intrigued!
It's hard to describe much about the book without giving away too much. When we meet Tink, she is on a mission retrieving a valuable jewel for the mermaid queen. She is the only one capable of providing the means for Tink to return to her homeland, where she was cast out. Let's just say this jewel might just be in possession of a certain handsome pirate, who's missing a hand...
I very much enjoyed the first part of the book, with Tink trying to steal from Hook. A fierce fairy to be reckoned with. I still enjoyed the rest of the book, too, but there were some minor details that just didn't do it for me, personally. I just thought Hook was too... nice, for a pirate. Same goes for his crew. Also there were a few plottwists that didn't feel necessary to the story, not without taking more time to deepen out the characters and the story as a whole.
But like I said, I did enjoy reading this book and it gave me some Pirates of the Caribbeans and Once upon a Time vibes. Did I start a rewatch of that series because of this book? Maaaybe... 😅
I thought this was a nice, easy read with a new twist on the classic Peter Pan tale!
I was granted complimentary access to Second Star to the Left by Megan Van Dyke as part of my participation in a blog tour for this title with Escapist Book Tours. Thank you to all involved in affording me this opportunity! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Second Star to the Left falls somewhere between being an alternate timeline retelling and an origin story prequel to the classic Peter Pan story, but this time the male lead and sympathetic "hero" is Captain Hook (James) and the POV character is Tinkerbell herself. His lover. Yup, you read that right!
This is a before-Wendy story that exposes connections and relationships between Neverland's most famous faces that nobody's ever known about before. It provides a lot of insight, for those who can read between the lines and look ahead to the timeline of the classic tale, as to why Peter and Tink have such a volatile relationship and why Tink even wants to hang around. It provides an interesting connection between Peter and Hook, as well, and definitely does an excellent job at making Hook a lot more human. He's still a pirate captain, he's still not on the right side of the law (if such a thing exists in a place like Neverland) and he's still motivated by greed and revenge, but we get to see him as a sympathetic, flawed man who has redeeming qualities.
I must comment, however, that the synopsis did NOT prepare me for how frequently and how graphically we would be visiting Tink and Hook in bed. I'm left with a few questions given the usual size difference between these two very different species of humanoid beings, but I also... don't want to know. It might have been explained but frankly, this level of steamy is not my thing and I just tried to make sure I wasn't missing key plot points while getting back to clothes-on as fast as possible. If you're also not a sexy time reader you can get through this book only skimming those scenes, but I think readers who DO read that will feel more connected to Tink.
Overall this was a very interesting, unique take on Neverland with great storytelling and interesting new spins on old characters. I'm definitely interested in reading more from this author, and I do recommend this book to readers of fantasy romance who enjoy fairytale retelling-type plots.
