HoldFast: A Gay Pirate Romance

Rate this book
The year is 1736, and the pirate Captain Lawrence has been kidnapped by a handsome Spanish pirate, Dom. Lawrence is fresh out of a tumultuous relationship with a Captain in the British Navy, and ready for love again. The first thing on his mind is knocking boots with his captor. Dom’s being blackmailed into leading a Spanish invasion that’s doomed to fail. His life and the fate of the entire Caribbean hang in the balance. Meanwhile, he struggles to contain his feelings for the slender tattooed Captain Lawrence, especially during the nights together in the cabin they share. Dom’s so touch starved that one glance at his captive’s lithe body is enough to set a fire within him. Dom opens his heart and his bed to his captive as they scheme to sabotage the invasion. The stakes get even higher when Lawrence discovers that his British ex is commanding the garrison that’s the invasion’s first target. He must save the man he used to love, and win the pirate he’s fallen in love with. Steam Medium. Multiple open door scenes and they all have explicit consent.
This is a male/male historical romance/comedy that includes tropes such fake-turned real marriage, enemies to lovers, sharing a bed, and a HEA. Dom hung his lantern on the wall. The new light source was flattering. Lawrence looked into Dom’s eyes for the first time, or at least the first time that night. They were alone together in a room with only one bed and about a hundred burning candles. Lawrence had poor impulse control and an active imagination. This was how bad decisions were made. Dom ran his tattooed fingers across the lace on Lawrence's blouse. Nervousness kept Lawrence talking. “I found this in your chest of drawers. Hope you don’t mind me borrowing a clean shirt.” He didn’t answer. Lawrence expected Dom to kiss him or something normal like that. Instead, Dom flattened a palm against Lawrence's chest and ripped the lace ruffles off his blouse. Lawrence let his chest be pulled into Dom’s palm. His body reacted to the sound of stitches popping. Dom was some kind of freak, for sure. Dom discarded the expensive lace onto the floor. He examined the shirt and Lawrence's chest beneath it. "You’re better when you don’t talk.”

I am still laughing as I write this review. I have read a number of Jack Brightside's books and although I have enjoyed them all, this has become my new favorite. Imagine you are a pirate captain in the early 1700's. You will not date another pirate because pirates are clingy and high-maintenance which is what you are and you need someone who will accommodate you. Now take that personality, add more pirates, British and Spanish armies, caribbean islands, and a modern day pop culture setting and you have the main ingredients which will turn out to be one of the funniest books you will read. The characters are all delightfully silly and most are good at heart.

This is a very sweet love story between two seriously badass pirates, Lawrence and Dom. I think of the book as being an 18th century gay pirate rom-com. Ms. Brightside's books always make me laugh but my constant hysterical shrieking was so loud and frequent that my son actually came into the room and asked if I was okay. Yes. The book really is that funny. Good on you Jack Brightside!

I loved this highly entertaining and equally humorous story. It's filled with pirates, the British navy, capture, ex-lovers, romance, and laugh out loud comedy. There is plenty of heat, too. No serious drama or angst. If you love pirates and are looking for fun, humor, and romance on the high seas of the Caribbean, look no further. It's here.

This was a really fun book, totally campy and delightful. I loved how much personality all of the characters had, and how they all felt like they fit together within the story.

I loved Yadi and Rodrigo, and how they just tried so hard to get their captains to make sensible decisions. Overall an author I enjoyed immensely and will definitely come back to!

I thank the publisher for the gift of an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
