After a miserable childhood, Lark has finally found the family he always wanted. There isn’t much he wouldn’t do for his new liege, Max, including undertaking a secret and dangerous mission to save the most hated creatures in their society – the chades. He only wishes his partner wasn’t a lethal, stoic ranger with a mouth he yearned to make smile.
Ivy is a ranger. She is judge, jury, and executioner to any who break the strict laws of their world. So how has she become the trusted operative of a legitimate goddess who wants her to save the chades instead of beheading them? To make matters worse, she is partnered with a fresh-faced earth paladin with green eyes, a body that won’t quit, and a perky attitude in direct opposition to her hostile one.
But as their mission evolves, Lark and Ivy discover pieces of a convoluted and terrible plot buried within the very foundations of their society. The secrets they uncover run deeper and are deadlier than any of them could have imagined. In order to save the chades and prevent a civil war, the two must reconcile their differences … and their hearts.
Montana is a self-confessed book junkie. Although she loves reading all genres from romance to crime fiction to sci fi, her not-so-guilty pleasure is paranormal romance. Alpha men, just a little bit damaged, and Alpha women who don't seem to know they need looking after, are a favourite combination of hers. Throw in some steamy sex scenes, a touch of humour, and a little violence and she is in heaven!
Her overactive (and overindulged) imagination could only take so much before the many voices wanted out. Thus, Montana's journey into the wonderful world of writing.
She is a scientist by day, having grown up in country New South Wales, Australia. Writing about ancient knights, demons and shapeshifters is such a delicious contradiction to her day job in the laboratory, that she doesn't see the voices stopping anytime soon!
LOVE Lark! But had trouble connecting to Ivy, just too closed and unfeeling - yeah, I know it says she feels “deeply” but we never see it. The overall series plot-line is progressing nicely, though.
It's just ridiculous how addictive this series is... I just can't stop ✋.. it is unfortunate that there are 7 books to this series and the last 2 hasn't been release or maybe not even written yet... Geez! Anyway I do have book 5 and I'm just going to jump right in now!
The ‘Elemental Paladins’ series is a series that you really need to read in order. I was late in discovering it but the plus side of that is that I could read the books in one go. I really loved and enjoyed the first three books. ‘Ranger’ is the fourth book and the newest book in the series. I was really looking forward to this one, because it’s about Lark (the youngest paladin in Max’s order) and Ivy, the stoic ranger who we already met in the previous books. After reading it, I can say that I liked the story but it didn’t hold my attention as much as the other books.
Every society or culture has his own bogeyman, in the warden/paladin society that ‘honor’ goes to the rangers. They are feared because when a warden goes to the ‘dark’ side and become a chade, it is the rangers who goes after him, to imprison or kill him. Something that doesn’t really make you popular with the rest of society. So being a ranger is a lonely job. But Ivy is okay with that, she isn’t a really social person and she’s happy with the love of her younger brother Breyden and the company of her fellow rangers. Ivy is happy with her life like it is but with the arrival of Max, things are changing and that’s also the case with Ivy’s life. For the first time she’s also accepted by non-rangers. Max and her order have no problem with the fact that Ivy is a ranger. This is something that give Ivy really mixed feelings. And then you have Lark, one of Max’s paladin. A younger guy who seems always happy and smiling and also someone who gives her other feelings. Feelings that Ivy doesn’t want but that she can’t hide from. So she tries to ignore him but when Max sends them on a mission together to find chades who can be saved, it becomes very hard to ignore him.
Lark is intrigued by the stoic ranger. Ivy is a mystery to him, a mystery that he wants to uncover but Ivy isn’t a ranger for nothing. She knows how to build walls between them and then you have also the fact that she considers him too young for her. She thinks of him like a young, pleasant but useless child! She couldn’t be more wrong, his father made sure that Lark know how to fight and defend himself. He simply decided for personal reasons to hide his warrior talents from the world. So now Lark has to prove to Ivy that he could be the right man for her and the more time he spends with Ivy the more he’s convinced that she’s the woman for him but Ivy isn’t an easy woman to please and after some time Lark is getting desperate! Can he convince Ivy of giving the both of them a chance at love?
The focus in this book was more on Lark’s intelligent (something that we saw traces of in the other books) and the way that his mind works. But Lark’s also a very talented warrior and I missed this a little bit in this story. There was some fighting but I would have loved more action of the warrior Lark and the ranger Ivy. Ivy was also a very different character than Max, Cali or Dianna. She was more silent, she liked to think things through before reaction to something. Their ‘courting’ was more an intelligent courting in my eyes, yes, there were sex scenes but very late in the story.
Just like in the other books, this story had also his little surprises in it. That’s one of the things that I really love of this series. The writer is capable to surprise me in every book with some new detail or secret that’s being revealed.
‘Ranger’ was a good story but it didn’t give me the same high like the other books in this series. Everything in his book was slower, the romance was a slow burner, the pace of the story was slower, it also had a little bit of a different feel and vibe for me. But it wasn’t bad, just a little different.
This story felt more like a warming up to the next book ‘Custodian’. Every move and detail in the story felt more like a chess board where every player was set up for the big battle that’s coming, a battle between good and bad. That isn’t bad but that made the story less fluent for me. I really appreciated the note that the writer wrote in the back of the book with a little information for the next book. So we know what to expect of it.
I enjoyed ‘Ranger’ but I would have like it more with some more depth and craziness in it. But I can understand why the writer wanted to slow it down and give us first more information before the next book. I’m very looking forward to it!
Eh. I didn't like Ivy much. I kept waiting for some big reveal as to why she is an asshole, like we got with the guys in previous books, but there wasn't one. She was just an asshole.
5 stars - continuing core story of Max/world
4 stars - Lark
2 stars - Ivy
2 stars - Lark + Ivy (because why does he like an asshole?)
I’m gonna write one big review for the whole series, because I read the first few books very quickly :) also, since I decided to take a break after the fourth one (out of seven) I will update this review when I read next installments :) ok, so what can I tell you about it? :) well, I read the first three books one right after another within the span of three days :) the next one took me a bit longer and we shall see how fast I will inhale the rest of them in the future ;) originally I gave those stories a bit higher ratings, but after some thinking I decided to lower them to the ones you will see below… because as much as I did enjoyed them, they are just… not as good as some other books I’ve read… I also have no interest to pick them up and reread them, and that’s not a good sign… each book in this series focuses on a different couple, but there is a bigger story arch that we follow throughout all of them… also, we have a bigger core group of characters that appear in each story so even if each novel concentrates on a different duo, we still see all of our faves :) not gonna lie, I am still not sure why I read them so quickly… the writing style is not that great, each romance feels rushed and underdeveloped, there are some problematic issues and yet… here we are :) I have no real explanation for you :) I mean, I guess I do like the idea for the series and there are some definitely interesting twists in it, but all in all… not the best I read… oh well :) below you can find some of my thoughts about each of the book I read so far with the rating
Warden 3,5 stars
the beginning to the series, and so far my favourite installment, where we are introduced to our core group of characters… :) and I have to admit that I really liked Max, our heroine, ad her totally unfiltered mouth from the start :) Ryker on the other had was an ass most of it...
Paladin 2,5 stars
going into it I predicted it will be my least favourite book in the series and I am right so far ;) as much as I loved Diana, I really didn’t like how Darius treated her… and not even an addition of an absolutely cutest little puppy couldn't save this one for me…
Chade 3 stars
again, the romance between Cali and Dex was my least favourite part of the story, the only reason why it reached 3 stars was the development of the story and the informations we learned about the world and that some things may not be like we thought before…
Ranger 3 stars
Lark is my absolute favourite out of them all… I mean, a guy who loves to read, does yoga and dances??? be still my beating heart… *sighs and swoons* as much as I wanted to warm up to Ivy, it was hard… and even though I could really understood how not all of us are super warm and fluffy and open about their thoughts and emotions… trust me, I know that from personal experience… I wasn’t the fan of how she treated Lark throughout the majority of the book, before doing a total change of heart…
Custodian haven’t read yet
Revolution haven’t read yet
Reckoning haven't read yet
I am still very curious to see where the story will go, so I will come back to it at some point, but after the underdeveloped romances and some ridiculous and eyerolling writing style, I need a break ;)
Feeling positively outraged at how I'm left hanging after consuming Ranger. I feel like a child that's just been told santa doesn't exist 😳😭. Montana Ash has been building the climax for 3 books now teasing us continuously throwing scraps of scandalous information teetering us on the edge of insanity with all the WTFS. Lark and Ivy's book is no exception to the above. A slow building heart pounding jam packed emotional rollercoaster that will have your jaw kissing the floor on more than one occasion. I love these crazy disfunctional bunch of looney's with everything. I'm totally book drunk off this badass authors very smart but very evil ending!!!!. I shall bow to your greatness lady. GIVE ME CUSTODIAN NOW PLEASE😭😂 I had to binge on carrot cake to make myself feel better obvs 😜
little breakdown of characters...
Lark is the worst kind of predator because he's the least expected one out of the bunch. Now don't take that comment the wrong way! Hes the sweetest most kind caring charismatic lethal weapon you'll ever meet. He's everyone's confidante, the young un with an old soul. I loved him even before I really knew him but now I think I love him the most second to Max!. He's lived a hard life experiencing pain like no other and even now lives with the constant reminder of his horrors. he was the most put together broken man I've ever read! I don't want to give everything away but honestly you'll just love him!.
Ivy.... oh I love me a cold bitch exterior and Ivy had that by the boat load. she lived a life of solitude with only small moments were she allowed her guards down. it's all she knew and if I'm being honest she's just someone who isn't a social butterfly by nature.. there's nothing wrong with that and it made for a good balance between her and Lark. I loved that she fought hard to keep her control and lost fabulously. I loved that she pushed Lark because he needed that push!. I also appreciated that she didn't skirt around the fact she fucked Ryker! Not every women needs to act like a looney and she was very honest in telling him and max that she didn't remember alot of it just like him and has zero feeling towards him. She was an adult and considering they are pretty damn old they definitely weren't bloody saints anyway... so I don't get the drama over people complaining about it being in the book because it was obvious from the moment Ivy came into the series that it was happening.. don't read if you don't like .. save yourself the agro and the unessecery negative opinion on a book you know your going to have a problem with.
like I said at the top I loved this book a whole lot and I'm devestated that I have to what for how ever long to read Custodian!. this story was seemlessly writting to perfection with depth and feeling. the plot so intricately woven to achieve maximum focus and frustration. some questions answered while a million more were dangled there ready for what I'm assuming will be the conclusion in the next story.
damn you are your brilliance you evil genius. can wait for Custodian.. if you could kindly swiftly get that out any time now I would be eternally grateful!
So, I lost count of the amount of face slapping twists in this book......and I LOVED It!! Montana Ash is officially one of my favourite authors. She has a way with words and I absolutely love the way she tells a story. The characters are still the utterly fantastic stars of the series and thankfully she has kept the woman as strong kick arse characters. I seriously can't wait for book 5
Ranger is the fourth instalment in the Elemental Paladins series and we rejoin the story a couple of months on from the end of Chade. Max is still struggling to convince the Council, even with the proof of Dex’s “recovery”, that not all Chades are beyond redemption. That there are some who have managed to hold onto a small part of souls and can still be saved. Never one to let a little thing like disapproval stand in her way, Max has a plan.
Lark is an earth paladin. After an horrific childhood he has finally found a home and a family with the Order of Aurora. Although young to be a member of an order there is nothing he wouldn’t do for his liege Max and that includes teaming up with the humourless Ivy in an attempt to rescue Chades. Ivy is a member of one of the most feared groups in their society. A Ranger, whose job it is to enforce their laws. To hunt down and execute Chades. So how has she ended up teamed up with a juvenile like Lark to do the very opposite of what she is trained for? Together with Dex’s help they will find those Chades that still have a chance of a normal life.
This series just continues to get better with each new release. We catch up with all of the existing secondary characters we’ve come to love and hate from the previous books, some of whom start to play a larger role in the plot line and there is the addition of some new characters who you will definitely be left wanting to know more about. The humour we’ve come to expect from Montana Ash is still there along with some darker undertones. Secrets are revealed but at the same time leave the reader with more questions. As you read you can visualise the battle lines being drawn & sides chosen for the fight that lies ahead. Max’s squirrel army is growing but does she really know who the real enemy is?
HECK YES!!! Loving the pace of this series!! So, so happy to see bits and pieces coming to life and fitting together! Montana Ash is a superstar! Bring on Custodian!!
I was super looking forward to Ranger, the fourth book in the Elemental Paladins series - and not just because of Knox, who's the guy whose name I chose through Montana's giveaway when she hosted her last Release party for her previous book Chade. I was super excited because I've fallen in love with each and every character. Including the baddies, I mean, what's a story without a few baddies.
So in Ranger, it's Lark and Ivy's story. Ivy is a Ranger who kills Chades, as is the job of a Ranger, only Ivy doesn't have the same mentality as of that of her brethren, she kills them to end their suffering. Lark is one of Max's paladins. At first both make assumptions about each other but eventually get to the good loving, that's not a spoiler either, we all knew that was coming.
To me though, it's not even about the romance although that's important, it's about the whole storyline. The world in which Montana has created, is something I've never read before this series and I'm quite literally blown away with each and every story she tells. I honestly cannot wait to see where all this is leading.
All the characters have something about them that make the story full. And obviously Knox is now my favourite character because I named him.
Really looking forward to the next book, Custodian. Bring it on!
Oh my. I'm reeling. Brilliant. Phenomenal. Epic. Words cannot describe how damn good this book is. So lark and Ivy are attracted to each other. Easy right. Hell no. Ivy is very set in her poker face ways. That is exactly what she has a poker face. Killing Chades for a living makes you very hard faced. She feels terrified of any feelings she may have. Lark well he's different. He wants her but will be patient and wait for her to realise he is not a kid and very much a man. Can they find the Chades that need saving? Read on. You will not be disappointed I promise. Some shocking secrets revealed and the usual antics of Max's Order are ever present. Absolutely Floved this book. Can't wait for Custodian
I read this book in 1 day; as I didn't want to put it down.
Lark, hmmmm, what can I say, he was a surprise especially because he has a talent that Ryder has too; only we don't find out what it is until the last Chade roundup. & I had a feeling that he has purposely failed his tests to get away from his father & his father's Order once reading about everything that they did to him.
Ivy, on the outside portrays a cold hearted b****, but on the inside especially as this book takes her on a journey she thaws out & in the end she jokes with the best of them. At 1st even though she was attracted to Lark she felt that he was too young especially since her younger brother Beyden is also his friend. She fights her attraction to him until the end (before she gets injured) with everything she has.
Some new questions have formed but some were answered in this book & it was very nice finding out that there are many more people on the side of Max; even more than she knew. I will definitely be looking forward to reading the next book to find more answers about what is going on; so, Montana you better get cracking as I'm sure that's it's not only me that wants answers.
I really like this complex world that Max and Ryder live in. Ivy is a Ranger who has been placed at Ryker’s camp... to watch over Dex even though he doesn’t need watching. Max has asked if she will go with Dex and one of her Paladians, Lark, to search for more Chades who can cured. Dex can pinpoint them. Max is showing an increasing precognition talent.. she tells them the Chade’s name is Knox. Cali is pregnant to Dex and he wants to stay near home... so Knox takes over the searching with Lark and Ivy. Dave has provided the accommodation in the form of a hotel behind his bar. Ivy initially thought Lark was too young and inexperienced but she quickly changes her opinion. They find out some surprising details towards the end.
I have loved the Elemental Paladins series so far, and Book 4, Ranger, continues this exciting series. Montana Ash certainly knows how to create totally fantastic characters and an exciting plot! The book takes up not long after Book 3 ends, with Lark and Ivy being the main characters. We learn of their respective pasts and we see how they learn to work together and with the rest of the group, and how their attraction leads to more. Excellent read!
Lark and Ivy's story is just as entertaining and well written as books one two and three. Great and diverse bunch of characters and a plot that will keep you wondering. Not that much of a cliffhanger as others might predict. Highly recommended
Well, Montana does not disappoint, especially in this book and this series. But dang it all, why did the book have to end?! Hurry back with your next book!
I can say I both loved and hated the book equally. It was a great book and I loved it but it ended abruptly and I hated that. This being book 4 of the series you would think I'd get used to it but nope, not so much. So now I wait anxiously for book five even knowing it will likely end the same yet still ready to get in line.
The Elemental Paladin's series just keeps getting better and better. Montana Ash has excelled herself again with the building of Max's world. Love her writing and am now extremely impatient for the next installment.
So much is answered in Ranger but new questions emerge. Love love Lark!! Can I keep him? It's ok Ivy won't mind😉. Those two together wow! Max finally finds out more about herself but will she be able to accept it. The only problem with this series is they always end. I absolutely loved Ranger and the rest of this series!! A must read for anyone.
Totally love this series and can't wait for the final conclusion to Max's story, but at least Ms Ash has informed us that it won't end there as Beyden and Axel is still to come so don't worry peeps.
Amazing! This story is so well developed that you turn pages without even realising that time is passing. Lark and Ivy are both interesting characters and their interactions were highly entertaining. I just adore all the characters in this series. And the ending....bloody hell... I did not see that coming! Hopefully the next book will be out soon or I think I might just lose my mind. Highly recommend.
I've read the whole series so far and all the books have been great. I would definitely recommend that you read the series in order to enjoy and understand the book the best.
What a great story and continuation of the series love the story behind Lark. How he turned out like he did considering who his father is shows what strength of character he possesses. The author gets better each book
AMAZING! SIMPLY AMAZING. A solid five star read that raises as many questions as it answers. Who can they trust to be on their side? Who are their enemies? Why is the council calling in Wardens and Paladins from around the world?
Rivalries within the council, a society that refuses to change with the times, narrow minded outlooks, and dated laws make for a page turning read. Add to that a few brow raising revelations and you get one can't put it down read.
How can a socially inept antisocial Ranger and a Paladin that thrives on family and is a borderline genius work together? Only Max would pair these two together and the result is a 5 star must read book.
Lark and Ivy’s mission to seek out Chades that are redeemable is working, proving Max's theory correct. But, and it’s a big but, factions within their society are spreading vicious rumors and casting doubt on Max and her outcast Paladins.
Love this author's writing style and love the Australian setting. The author manages a fresh touch to the paranormal with her quirky characters and clever world building. The drama is now rising to an intriguing level as talents are uncovered and love hits our loyal group once again. And also once again history seems to be repeating itself and we can't wait to see where this will take us. As always an entertaining ride but this time it cut off to quickly and rather than a cliff hanger the story felt unfinished. I can see why and can only hope the next book is not too far away.
Ranger is book 4 in the series and this Author just gets better with every book. This book bring us Lark and ivy. Lark is seen as the fun loving youngester of the group by Ivy but there is so so so much more to the sexy hot man. He has because my second favourite character behind Max. Ivy has spent her life being alone but now finds herself part of Max's family. She is so not sure about this family group. Montana Ash brings this story to life. In this books she introduces new Characters and they rocks. Thank you for the amazing amazing read.
