A reckoning is coming – but not the one Axel was counting on.
Society is still in shambles and although Axel was prepared to help stitch it back together, he was not prepared to do it alongside the woman who tore his heart out fifteen years ago. Celeste had been his entire world, that is, until she told him it had all been a lie; she’d never loved him. Although he wants answers, he wants to retain his hard-won peace more, and Axel firmly refuses to work with Celeste. Too bad a certain Goddess doesn’t agree, and before long, Axel realises he doesn’t know the true meaning of the word reckoning.
Celeste had once loved the handsome, irreverent fire paladin with all her heart. But leaving Axel had been necessary; a matter of life and death. After being faced with the true, dark nature of their society, Celeste had no time for tears and she was forced to put on her big girl panties and take care of business. Yes, she has lied and kept secrets, but she is now also capable and strong – things she will prove during the Warden Trials. If only Axel will allow her to show him too …
Will Axel and Celeste get their second chance at happiness? Or will old betrayals and new secrets divide them forever?
Montana is a self-confessed book junkie. Although she loves reading all genres from romance to crime fiction to sci fi, her not-so-guilty pleasure is paranormal romance. Alpha men, just a little bit damaged, and Alpha women who don't seem to know they need looking after, are a favourite combination of hers. Throw in some steamy sex scenes, a touch of humour, and a little violence and she is in heaven!
Her overactive (and overindulged) imagination could only take so much before the many voices wanted out. Thus, Montana's journey into the wonderful world of writing.
She is a scientist by day, having grown up in country New South Wales, Australia. Writing about ancient knights, demons and shapeshifters is such a delicious contradiction to her day job in the laboratory, that she doesn't see the voices stopping anytime soon!
This book was so bad it ruined the series for me. I DNF'd at 60%.
Axel was one of my favorites, and he deserved so much better than this.
Let me do a short sum up. Fifteen years ago, the woman he was in love with shattered him with some breathtaking, well-aimed, emotionally abusive lies. She told him she never loved him. That she was bored, and he was a good lay, so she pretended. That he was just a worthless paladin, and she was done now.
The reason I say that this was well-aimed is because Axel is alone in the world, and always struggled with feelings of worthlessness, having been abandoned by parents who also thought he was just a worthless paladin. Something the woman he loved knew full well, and exploited ruthlessly.
Here's the thing. That's a hard thing for me to swallow anyway. It is fucking horrible. And in the last book, when Bey said a couple fucking horrible things to Jazz, people were pissed at him ... even though he was infected with chade-evil, and it wasn't really him saying it. And they were right. Saying horrible things designed to tear down the person you supposedly love is a hard thing to swallow, no matter the excuse.
In this book, though, no one even cares to hear what Celeste's reasoning was. Ivy says it outright, to Axel's face - she doesn't care what Celeste did or why she did it, she's going to be nice to Celeste. And throughout the book, members of this previously supportive family indicate that Axel just needs to get the fuck over it already.
This was gross to me. On so many levels. First, this shit is not Axel's responsibility to fix. He didn't destroy that bitch, she destroyed him. And they're poking him like he should sort this out and get back together with her like a good little boy. Fucking gross.
Second, these are people who stood alongside each other in support while they faced down every other asshole from their past who had hurt them. Lark's shitbag father. Cali's shitbag ex-liege. Bey's shitbag ex-best friend. The father who abandoned Max. Always, they stood together and protective of their family. But not this time. Apparently Axel doesn't merit his family being protective of him. No, he just needs to get the fuck over it. Not only was this book not good enough for Axel, it also destroyed every other character by turning them into abuse-enabling dickheads who treated this entire situation as if it was his fault and his mess to fix. Fuck them all.
Third, this destroyed any semblance of woman-power in the series. Women are strong, formidable warrior who can take care of their damn selves, thank you very much. And that has been a theme. But now, this woman was fucking horrible, destroyed someone who trusted and loved her implicitly, and not only does she not need to explain or apologize, no no, clearly something bad made her do it, she's not responsible, and Axel needs to get over his damn self already because it's all about her. Fuck off with that. This bitch made her choices, and she owns the responsibility for them. If women are powerful and equal - and we are - then that must equally be true: our choices and our consequences are ours to deal with. Treating her like she has license to destroy someone who trusted and loved her, with no excuse or apology, just because she's a woman ... that's gross to me. No one asked Trent what was going on that made him lie and hurt Bey. No one acted like it was Bey's responsibility to see what hurt Trent that he acted like that. And of course they didn't, because Bey was the victim. Just like Axel is the victim here.
And then at the 60% mark when you found out that this bitch had . I deleted the book. There is no excuse for that. I don't care what happened to her. I think she is the most loathesome human being in this entire series, and that includes Garrett and Autumn ... who were fucked up, but at least began from a point of trying to save someone they loved. But not Celeste. She is literal human garbage. And I am not going to read about Axel being bullied into forgiving this piece of shit who took so much from him.
Fuck her, and fuck this series. I don't think I'm even going to read another thing from this author, I'm so disgusted by this.
Celeste destroyed Axel 14 years ago with both words and actions that were absolutely devastating - and were done in such a way as to totally annihilate him. They have had absolutely no contact since and Axel has done his best to move on and overcome but still carries the very deep scars. Then, suddenly she shows up at his door and everyone wants him to just forgive, forget and make friends again? HUH??? That goes COMPLETELY against everything his closest, most loyal friends would do! Yes, they don’t fall all over her at first but they do pressure him to just get over it and make friends with her. Now, I’m all for forgiveness but in an instance like this, it would take a LOOOOONG time - and that is AFTER she apologizes and shows sincere remorse.
And then, AND THEN… the twist she reveals near the end? The twist that drives a dagger right through his heart, making her betrayal complete and total? To immediately be okay with that?!?!? So far beyond logical believability… *sigh*. This one was an excercise in hair-pulling, pillow screaming frustration.
Ask me if I've wrote this review twice and my iPad took a shit fit twice and refreshed the fucking page. Not happy one fucking bit. If this reads crazy it's because I'm at the end of my patience and speed typing so it doesn't refresh again.
I would be a god cursed liar if I was to say I was happy that this series has come to an end. I'm not. Not one bit. I would have happily read anything so long as this series kept going because I love it that much. STOP before anyone bips in.. I am aware that this isn't the end of these characters and this world. I'm a huge fan of this author and this is not a negative towards this book. I fucking loved it like I knew I was going to but reading her author note at the end made my heart a little sad to know this chapter of these characters is closing.
Reckoning finally brings us our beloved filthy little flirtatious tease Axel's story and his lady love Celeste. Throughout the previous 6 stories Axel upholds his light teasing sweet nature and we really only get tiny glimpses of hurt that flash through his happy facade so going into this book I really had no fucking clue what to expect. I can tell you now that I was positively mind blown at the revaluations made. I just didn't see it coming.
Axel is our banter boy of the series. He's the light hearted always up for a good time forever teasing and flirting guy that generally keeps everyone in good spirits. Underneath all that is 14 years or hurting and heartbreak that he hides pretty damn well. I always guessed there was depth to him hidden under what he wanted to show you and because naturally he is a very loving it was easy to not see anything else. But I have to admit I enjoyed the full package of Axel.
Celeste is a character I just clicked with. I like her from the beginning even with the little knowledge I had about her. She's sweet and strong willed even in times of fear but most importantly she acknowledges her faults and makes no move to excuse them. 14 years is a long time to love someone and be so lonely and I like that she isn't bitter or angry but instead just resigned to her fate through the cards she was dealt. She's a character that will keep surprising you in the best ways.
Axel and Celeste's story goes back further that most of the other characters are their journeys. There is 14 years of heartbreak and hurt, secrets, lies and untold truths between them that got left to fester for all that time. It's safe to say their journey was not an easy one and filled with many unexpected turns along the way. I like they dealt with their situations the best they could with minimal drama which I very much appreciated. The connection never went away despite the time and the chemistry only burned brighter with all the old and new emotions crashing together creating a explosive concoction.
Aside from Axel and Celeste.. this author also delights us with a slew of crazy hilariously outrageous interfering characters that get up to all kinds of shenanigans. Max our fearless tiny leader and her merry band of crazy honestly never fail to have me crying in fits of laughter. Like usual the author leaves a trail of breadcrumbs through every book giving us tiny teasers of what's to come and this story was no exception. In here we finally get ALOT of unanswered questions finally answered as well as some new ones left up in the air for what I'm gathering are future stories in other series's. But for the most part this author left no stone unturned with huge truths unveiled.
This author.. Montana/ Kim has been a favourite of mine since the first time I picked up Warden in 2016 and will continue to be up there for as long as she writes. The Elemental Paladins series bring us originality in its truest form. The set up of these characters and this crazy world is nothing short of brilliance in her execution from book one all the way to book 7. The characters whilst wildly outrageous are easily relatable and just well writting. Not only did I find myself wanting to be apart or this crazy ride, I connected to every character for many different reasons. The stories are crazy and not something that would happen in real life for the most part but when you're reading them it's almost so believable you forget for a second that it's actually a fiction. Also fuck yes for the seamless carryover of the plots from one book to the next. It's hard to read some serial books because it's so choppy and yet this author manages to give us a solid story with multiple plots and characters throughout this entire series whilst maintaining some storylines, secrets and revelations. I don't know how she did it but she did it fucking brilliantly.
So to some it up... this series is fucking phenomenal. One of my favourite pnr series's of all time. The characters, the storylines... everything about them is great. I'm gutted it's come to an end but I'm also excited for what the future holds for these characters old and new.
This was a pretty good end to the series. I will miss this bunch but will always love Max and her Order. Axle has been my favourite Paladin and his story was heartbreaking but also so sweet. I totally love Spiro. The concept of using grit and humour while we change our world is needed in these times so good job on that. Although I have to say it was a bit creepy having The Mother casually visit in their kitchen but it worked with the series ending.
This was a fantastic way to end the series! I am so glad Axel finally got his happily ever after. And WOW! There were aspects of this book that I was not expecting. This wrapped up the series, but it isn't the end. I can't wait to read what Montana comes up with next!
Wow I can’t believe we’ve come to the end of this chapter in the story. I loved this book. Once I started I couldn’t put it down. I’m so sad and happy right now. Can’t wait for the elemental series now.
Representation: Japanese supporting character, Portuguese supporting character, Black supporting character, Gay side character
Overall: 3.75-stars
This book was probably my favourite romance in the whole series (I love Max and Ryder but in their book Ryder was such an ass so I didn’t enjoy their book that much.) — and I normally hate second chance romances.
I loved the twist — my brain was going in that direction in the beginning but I dismissed it. It was SO well done and I loved how all the past turmoil was handled maturely.
I can’t wait to continue the series in the Elemental Collection volumes — I seriously can’t wait to read Dana and Mordecai’s novella.
Finally Axel gets his turn at love. Wow I didn’t see that coming. Who knew all that flirting was Masking a broken heart. The trials for the new council members begin. New characters to get to know. Celeste a fire warden left 15 years ago leaving a broken hearted Axel to rebuild his life. Axel is shocked to see Celeste after so long. He wants to know why Celeste broke him all those years ago. Shocks galore in this finale. Loved every word. Montana has a way of sucking you into the story and keeping you there with her humour and amazing words. Can’t wait to read more of her novellas on other characters from this sensational series.
This is Alex and Celeste’s story.. Hints of this relationship have been cropping up in several books.. They were in a long and committed relationship when she suddenly told him he was nothing to her.. Her father was threatening his life and she did what she could to sever anything between them, except she did not know that she was pregnant at the time. She kept her child away from most of their society because though he is a palidin but they don’t know what domain he is in…🤔 Max called her to Eden to join the IDC .. a fact she is confused by because she doesn’t consider herself strong as a fire warden, but it is her relationship with her domain that gives her the strength to win the warden trials. She also finds the strength to tell Alex about his son. Spiro is a complete surprise to him. She is a easy character to relate to and her sons character is even more likeable. Ryker’s house is getting quite full.🤣 Things are changing in their society and forbidden relationships are now looked upon without prejudice. New councils are being formed on an International scale and Local scale, as well as for paladins and chadens. New headquarters are being built and a new orphanage is also being as well. I really like the way Montana writes her stories and look forward to more in this universe she has created.

A fantastic finale to the Elemental Paladins series. After seeing all of Max’s other paladins find their true loves it was finally the turn of the amiable Axel to find his happily ever after. Who would’ve guessed that his cheesy chat up lines and chronic flirting hid a broken heart? What follows in Reckoning is a tale of second chance love that will have you laughing one minute and then alternating between wanting to give Axel a big hug and then slapping him until he sees sense.
Montana Ash has the knack of making the reader laugh out loud at her writing that is peppered with Australian slang. Her vivid imagination has created characters that have real depths to them, so much so that every time she drops a new character into a story this reader immediately wants to know what lies beneath the happy go lucky facades they present to the world and wants more. Fortunately Montana Ash is an author who listens to her readers so while there is some sadness at the end of a fantastic series so her fans can take solace in the fact that she intends to release a series of novellas featuring some of the secondary characters as well as a certain little goddess so we haven’t heard the last of Max and company so it’s more of a ‘see you later’ rather than ‘goodbye”.
I have to say that I have, overall, loved this entire series. Montana Ash created a wonderful world where Custodians, Wardens, and Paladins co-exist with humans, a totally unique storyline and she made sure that all of Max's Paladins got their very own story. The character development throughout the series was amazing and reading Reckoning felt like coming home. I was really curious about Axel's story and how it would pan out and overall I enjoyed the read. I've always adored Axel's character and finally we get to know Celeste and dive into their past. The two definitely have chemistry and right off the bat I was left wondering about what could have driven them apart. That’s up to you the reader to find out.
All in all, this book tied up the series and I was a left feeling a little sad about that. Although, I'm not sure why, I didn't really just love this book, for me it was an enjoyable read but I guess I was left wanting a little more.
Ahhh, the final Paladin won his fair maid! Well, something along those lines anyway, as they almost set fire to the pages on more than one occasion! Whether Axel and Celeste were talking, glancing at one another, or getting it on, you could feel the passion between them - the love and the lust were so damned hot! It's all about the second chance for them, with lots of secrets that have to be divulged and accepted before they can move on and be the couple they should have been all those years before. Reading this book was bitter sweet. It was an awesome finale to what has been an epic series, one that captured me from page one of the first book to the final page of this story. The consolation of knowing we'll still hear more about our favourite characters certainly helps blunt the loss!!! Fabulous writing from Montana Ash.
Absolutely loved this book. Montana Ash is just an incredible author. Will continue to buy books from her, I was up until 2am reading when I made myself put the book down just so I had something to read this morning. Definitely a series I will continue to revisit, love spending times with the wardens and paladins!! Eagerly awaiting the elemental series. I love how Spiro and the goddess will fit together in future books and that the spin off will include our much loved characters. Amazing series if you’re lucky to come across it please do not hesitate to buy!
Axel's story has been a roller coaster. It made me cry, made me smile, get frustrated and laugh hysterically. I couldn't even begin to tell you what was my favorite part of the book. I didn't see coming the plot twist that got me screaming in shock, looking like a deranged woman in my husband's eyes. I don't want to give spoilers, so I will limit what I say. But the story was beautifully written and captivating. I cannot wait to see what's to come in the Elemental collective and see the stories of all those secondary characters that I love.
I absolutely skipped to the end. I despise the second chance trope and was pretty much over the series at this point. And then I skipped to the end and am glad I didn’t waste my time. Because even the ending was not awesome. It was mediocre at best. After 7 books I expected an epic ending but that is not to be found here. There is something that I THINK the author intends to be the big finale but it falls completely flat. It is not an ending to the series, it’s the start of a new one. That I won’t be reading.
That was just everything and the best possible end to this amazing series. It’s bittersweet really as I love all the characters in this series and it truly has been an excellent ongoing plot since book one. But the humour was top notch. Spiro fitted in like a beloved glove. Axel deserved his happy ending and boy did he. I love the potential for future spin off. I want to see more of Spiro. Brilliant book.
Axel, our favorite irreverent paladin, gets his story and what a story it is. In this, the last installment of the Elemental Paladins, we get to meet the woman who changed Axel and altered the course of his life.
Celeste is not at all what we think she is and some harsh truths are revealed that will be both enlightening and jaw dropping.
Steamy, sometimes heartbreaking, funny and a fantastic end to one of the best paranormal series out there.
I love this series and hope we see more of the characters in future books. I know there are going to be some Novellas and am looking forward to these. This book has all the feels and the dynamics between all the characters are wonderful. So, do yourself a favour and read Reckoning, but do yourself an even BIGGER favour, read the whole Elemental Paladins series...you won't regret it!
Wow this is by far my favorite couple other than Ryker and Max. I was surprised that Axel was the last to find love but it was worth the wait for sure. This one got me feeling all the feels. I loved the history and the way the relationship progressed between him and Celeste. Then there was that big surprise that I never would have guessed or had an inkling it was coming. I really enjoyed this book.
The end of the Series!?!?! NO!!! You cry. But alas all great things have to come to an end sometimes and this is the end of the Paladin series. However, its not the end of Max and crew as there will be a few more released. This book was brilliant. So well written and had that.. "Well, I didn't see that coming.." part to it. You have to read it. Im not going to give any spoilers.
This paranormal series is amazing! Action, adventure, suspense and true love ! Max is a goddess every woman would love to be. She is strong, quirky and a little stabby ! Every character is written so well that you are transported into the story. They are your friends and your family . Excellent series!
Wonderful, full-bodied conclusion to a series that never quit.
A tear-jerker at the end, but for all the right reasons. This second chance story (which are so not my thing) contained all the feels, from anger, resentment and broken heart to justice, restoration and complete/replete lives. And all of it punctuated by perfectly placed humour.
Just WOW! If you haven’t begun this unique paranormal series, I highly recommend you start with Book 1 “Warden”. The characters feel like family, the dialogue flows easily, the humor is infectious, and the danger is real. Thank you Montana for give us the Elemental Paladins.
1 Star = DNF. 2 Star = Finished. Didn’t really enjoy. 3 Star = Finished. Story was neither good nor bad. 3.5 Star = Finished. Story was good. Will maybe pick up next in series if there is one. 4 Star = Finished. Enjoyed story & will definitely pick up next in the series! 5 Star = Bloody Loved it! ♡
The good stuff . This story, the characters, just spot on very enjoyable. The only thing negative and why a 4 and not a 5 is, every book in this series makes a point if you don’t believe in a certain thing you are small minded. That’s a big fat nope. I believe what I believe and don’t push it or be mean about it I’m not small minded, I just think differently.
Thank goodness Axel gets his happy ever after and is reunited with his long lost love, mind you he gets a lot more than he bargained for! This is the perfect conclusion to this series whilst still setting us up for more wonderful forays into Max’s world. Highly recommend this series but they must be read in order!
Wow, just wow. What an ending to this series. I really don't want it to end. I'm thankful there is Elemental Collectives and I'm going straight into those. Axel and Celeste my hear breaks for both of them for what they went through. I'm so happy they all get their HEA. But there are still so many questions. This series has become one of my all time favourites.
OMG the twists and turns, the answers to question we all wanted answers too. I loved this book, the storyline and the characters it was everything looked for and more. Big thanks to Montana Ash for one of the best series I have read. Can’t wait for more
