The Lucky Diamond: An exciting Middle Grade magical fantasy quest, full of monsters, witches and adventure

“The whirlclouds erupted on all sides, buffeting the boat first one way and then the next, sending Alan sprawling from one side of the deck to the other. He couldn’t stay on his feet long enough to reach the tiller. Yvonne and Susan clung to the mast. He couldn’t see Vicky or Cathy as waves washed over the side, drenching him.”
When 10 year old Cathy meets Lucky, a magical talking diamond, she and her orphaned siblings readily agree to help Lucky get home to the Rock of Diamonds, situated far from their home in the rundown town of Lowdar, in the furthest reaches of the country on the other side of the monster infested Great Forest.
What the five children don’t know is that Lucky’s enemy, the evil Queen Rose of Cassis, is hunting the Diamond princess and will do anything to stop her, and those helping her, from reaching the Rock of Diamonds.
With Lucky’s magic waning rapidly and Queen Rose determined to destroy her and the children, can five young orphans possibly succeed in their quest?
“Nivram, a place of unimaginable beauty and danger + five orphaned siblings trying to save a friend = the adventure of a lifetime that hurtles along at tremendous speed and is sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats.” Lindsay J Sedgwick, author of the Wulfie series
“The Lucky Diamond is a gem, fast-paced and convincing, with an unusual quest and characters you'll want to know. A great read.” Livi Michael, author of The Whispering Road, winner of Nestle Children’s Book Bronze Award

Just finished Valinora Troy's fantasy story "The lucky diamond", reading it with the kindle unlimited subscription of my girlfriend.

Valinora presents a lovely fantasy story for youngsters (and not that young) that if enjoyed the stories of Harry Potter or Narnia, are going to love this book. That I would say is the main target audience of this book.
A group of 5 orphaned siblings find Lucky, a diamond which not only has the ability of speaking and acting humanly, but also has got great powers. Lucky needs to go back to where it belongs and the children are going to help it. But the journey won't be easy at all since Queen Rose (the bad in this story) is hunting the diamond.

Even though the story may sound classy, it is superbly executed by the author, with exquisite prose and a vocabulary that will make an easy reading for 10-12 years old but also for older people.
The only thing that grinds me a little bit is that the children in the story act like people older than 10 years old would act. For me they look some years older and kept imagining me while reading. That, and the quickness of passing from one thing to another, the story is so good that I would have preferred a little bit more depth from time to time in some passages.

Being said that, this is a great book, with awesome characters than you, fantasy readers, young and not young, will enjoy.

A family of five orphaned children living rough on the streets of Lowdar come upon a diamond, but this is no ordinary precious stone. This is Lucky, princess of a magical shape-changing species, and she needs the children to help her get home.
I loved this magical tale. The world building is engaging, the world is full of fun, and sometimes scary, creatures, and the children need to use all of their skills (and the magical gifts left to them by their mother) to navigate the perilous journey.
My favorite of the five children was middle child, Vicky. Determined, brave, and rebellious, I loved her attitude. However, all the children are likable and relatable and I enjoyed spending time with them. I love that the children have such different and well established personalities, because every reader is going to find at least one character that they can easily relate to.
The magical Diamonds are such an original idea, and I look forward to learning more about them in subsequent books. There is something about the King of the Diamonds that draws me to him particularly.
Queen Rose is a formidable foe, who reminds me a bit of Jadis, the White Witch, from Narnia. I love her castle, and I wouldn’t mind have a home like it!
The book has little illustrations at the beginning of each chapter, which was a nice touch, and I love the cover artwork. There is a scene from the book on the back cover, which I particularly liked.
This seems to be the first book in a series and, even though the book ended in a very satisfying manner, there are a few questions that I hoped to see answered in sequels.

Okay. First, a note on paperbacks. I think I lost this one in the house four separate times during the course of reading it. How is that even possible!?

Sorry, on to the review. This book was so fun! It honestly felt like such a classic middle-grade adventure, it was absolutely loveable.

The story follows five orphaned siblings in a dangerous fantasy world who stumble upon a magical talking diamond and embark on a journey to return it to its kingdom. Action fills this story from start to finish as the siblings run into all kinds of creatures, both friendly and dangerous, on their adventure.

I love how we learn about the world right alongside the children, but the pace never feels bogged down with too much information. The cast is large with lots of new terms, but the world is fully fleshed out with an intriguing history, and a villain that's never far from mind. The scope and the bond between the siblings definitely gave me strong Narnia vibes, but in a wholly unique fantasy world.

Totally recommend for children ages 8-14 looking for a fantastical adventure and adults that enjoy rich middle grade fantasy! (4.5/5)

I very rarely read high fantasy, and this is a middle grade novel to boot. However, I follow this author on twitter and having witnessed the professional lengths she went to pre-launch I had to buy into it.
Great world-building, likable characters, and just the right amount of fear-inducing suspense to satisfy the intended audience. As an ex-primary school teacher, I can highly recommend this fantasy novel for middle grade readers, or even adults who enjoy this magical genre.

What I Didn’t Like:
-One unanswered question. No spoilers, but I need this answer. Full disclosure: there’s a book 2 coming so I’m hoping it will come up then.
-Epilogue felt unnecessary. Then again, I’m weird and I like when a story resonates in my head and doesn’t need to be wrapped up with a bow for me. Most readers, especially middle grade readers who are enjoying this one, will probably like the epilogue.

What I Did Like:
-The characters. They’re adorable, they’re strong, and they’re smart. I liked reading about them as a group, I liked when they struck out on their own, and I liked when they paired off.
-The fantasy world is well created. I felt sucked right into it and completely able to follow along with this one. It gave me Narnia vibes, honestly.
-Magic. Well used, well explained, and fun!

Who Should Read This One:
-Middle grade fantasy fans, give this one a read. It’s FUN and well written.
-In general if you like middle grade stories with compelling characters, quests, and magic you’ll adore this one. Give it a try!

My Rating: 5 Stars. This is a GREAT story that a lot of people will really enjoy. Give it a read!

Five orphaned siblings embark on a journey to save a friend. The adventure that later became self-discovery with surprising results.

“When you leave a beautiful place, you carry it with you wherever you go,” lifestyle author Alexandra Stoddard once wrote.

Valinora Troy introduces Nivram as an unimaginable beauty, though it's somewhat dangerous. The beginning of this book reminded me of The Chronicles of Narnia. Each sibling has a strong character and their own ability, helped by the strange gifts left to them by their mother and no ordinary precious stone, Lucky-the princess of a magical shape-changing species.

This is a fast-paced book. Book that you can read in one sitting. However i still have one unanswered question. I really hope they will reveal it in the sequel.

I haven’t enjoyed the pure imagination of a book for young readers like this probably since reading fantasy adventures as a child myself. Troy captures the wonder of a world that is at turns delightful and terrifying for its young heroes, and avoids many of the traps of tropey fantasy writing by introducing characters and magic that are familiar and integral to the plot and action, but not just pretty window-dressing for an RPG or video game-like world.

Where else can you read about a talking diamond or a canoe who is really a prince of a character under a punishing spell? Others have made Narnia-like comparisons, but this work feels wholly original and promises a world of opportunities for sequels to come!

Definitely for not just young readers, but also the young at heart!

The Lucky Diamond is portrayed as a middle grade fantasy adventure. The cover shows two of the children with Lucky shining in the background. The blub gives a fairly decent idea of what the book is about.

I found the book to be true to the blurb and cover. It is correctly written for the target audience.

Canoes that talk, Travelling up a waterfall, getting turned to stone for looking into your reflection, witches with spells, rosebuds that can enchant you, monsters , friendly rebels, trees that continuously bear magical fruits, a magic compass that always shows you the way, telescope that points to all ahead, a magical flute that can cure with its tune.

All the above are magical elements the author has introduced that would surely leave children wonderstruck. The story moves on at a very good pace. For an older reader the entire book can be read start to finish in a few days without the reader getting bored or distracted.

All in all, i would say it was definitely a good book.. Since i am not the target audience, i cant say i fell in love with the book or particularly connected with certain characters or a scene was fantastic. However i certainly think it hits all the right checkpoints for the middle grade fantasy magical adventure

The Lucky Diamond, by Valinora Troy.
A really fun read and not just for middle grade readers but for anyone who loves well-written intriguing fantasy tales.

Highly imaginative world building with a fascinating premise.
Five orphaned children, Yvonne, Susan, Vicky, Cathy and Alan witness the trial of their uncle - his punishment is banishment into the Great Forest, a place where evil dwells among the trees and mountain trails.
I was eager to get to this part in the story, and when you do, you won't be disappointed.

The five children find a Diamond called, Lucky, a magical being who can talk. Together, with the Diamond's help they escape from the town of Lowdar and begin their perilous journey. A well-defined plot filled with magical elements, evil witches, enchantments, and of course monsters.
There are some scary scenes that middle grade readers will love. Very descriptive and visual throughout, especially when the comical and highly likeable canoe called Charlie arrives on the scene.

This story also has a wonderful depth that is explored further in the latter part of the book.
A delightful, enchanting story that I loved.

Lowdar, in the kingdom of Nivram, is a harsh place, where those perceived to be criminals are either hanged or banished, the latter meaning certain death by reason of the monsters of the Great Forest outside Lowdar's walls. The loss of their guardian to this fate leaves siblings Yvonne, Susan, Vicky, Cathy and Alan alone and in hiding, for fear of similar punishment.

Finding Lucky--a member of a shape-shifting race who's trying to return to the Rock of Diamonds from whence she was stolen--is a life-changing experience for the five, who encounter both friends and foes as they help Lucky in her journey home.

The Living Rocks, the Wood of Witches, the Nilken--along with their Milken and Pilken--the Demerai and Paul, Prince of the Kingdom of Kyle, are just a few of the entities the children encounter along the hazardous road to return Lucky to Mount Slant. Along the way stories are told, which educate the children about the troubled history of the kingdom, why it was divided into East and West and how the kidnapping of both Lucky and Paul is related to dark deeds still going on. Their own family history appears to be no small part of this either, as the gifts given to the children by their mother, before her own untimely death, play a role in their survival at crucial times as they make their way through danger  including a confrontation with the evil witch Rose.

It's a complex story, well-paced enough and suitable to keep young readers engaged, with plenty of imagination used to create the wealth of creatures and magical happenings. It does ask a bit much in places though, such as why a band of forest outlaws should clamour for a half-delirious newcomer to be made leader--over the experienced man who's already doing a good job--just because he's a good hunter. The plot requires it, is the answer, and maybe younger readers than I won't question it, but the imagination that wrote this story could possibly have come up with something a bit better. A satisfying story overall though

Five orphaned siblings embark on an exciting quest to return a magical Diamond princess to her faraway kingdom in this imaginative children’s fantasy. After their uncle is banished, Vicky, Alan, Susan, Cathy and Yvonne are forced to fend for themselves on the dangerous streets of Lowdar. A chance meeting with Lucky—a magical princess whose natural form is that of a diamond—propels them on a perilous journey through the enchanted land of Nivram. Lucky’s powers are waning, and only the energy from her home rock can restore her. But malign forces are bent on her destruction, and the kids must use all their wits and resources to overcome the array of obstacles in their way.

Author Valinora Troy moves the story forward at a cracking pace, sprinkling just enough description of the various magical beings and environments to tickle the reader’s imagination as we go. It’s a plot-driven book, and a little light on characterization compared to the best in this genre. But for children who enjoy fantasy world-building, there’s a good amount of it here. There’s plenty of variety in the creatures and humanoid races we encounter. Lucky is a charming creation—when she isn’t using her magic powers to get the group out of scrapes, the kids take turns keeping her in their pockets while she sleeps. I especially like Charlie, another friendly being they encounter, whose unusual form and abilities will delight children.

It takes a while for the evil witch to show up, but she’s a showstopper when she does. The story is tense and dramatic whenever she appears. There’s no shortage of other perils elsewhere in Nivram, and no reader will feel short-changed by the fantasy elements or settings. I think the two big conflicts are resolved too easily at the end (compared to, say, the Narnia books), but all the plot threads are tied up nicely before the sweet epilogue.

Ultimately, apart from a couple of nit-picks, The Lucky Diamond achieves everything it sets out to, and should enchant its target audience (8-12 year-olds). It has just enough originality to make the familiar tropes of the genre seem fresh. And most importantly, it’s fun to read. Well done.

Review: Overall, I liked this one pretty well! The characters are well developed and likable and they feel like middle grade characters. The book did very well with the world building and I really liked the magic system as well. I also felt like the plot was well done.

The only issues I had with the book is that I felt like the book had a few slower pacing moments in it, which broke my immersion, and that the book had a cliffhanger.

Verdict: It was good!

Young teen read

A story of five strong children making their way into the unknown. This read wasn't really for me but I liked where the author was taking the story. It was the hearts, strength, determination and sibling bond that really kept me reading. I loved seeing how kind the characters were and their willingness to help someone they didn't know, Lucky the Diamond, no matter how far fetched it was for me lol. I do understand that books are fiction and not real but when writing I feel it's important to write characteristics of people as real as possible and for me it was a little fast how willing and eager they were to help Lucky. There were also a lot of mistakes where words were forgotten and I would have to stop and reread it which took me out of the story for a moment but I don't mind those. The reason for my 3 stars is that the story just wasnt for me and as far as the characteristics of the characters they weren't believable for me which is huge in the books I choose to read. I did enjoy all the trouble the children would find themselves in, that part so very much fun to read and kept me hooked and that and the siblings relationship is the reason it's getting 3 stars. I feel this book is more for maybe 10 to 16 years of age and being 31 I just couldn't get into the way it was written but again this is just my opinion and the author did an amazing job at the story and idea and characters, I see much talent there. So if your looking for something with a percey Jackson and Narnia kind of feel to it then this might be for you.

Fantasy fun for kids

The Lucky Diamond is a sparkling gem of a book for young readers (if you'll excuse the pun). It is a well thought through fantasy with an immersive world and a lot of imaginative elements perfect for stimulating children's creativity.

It is perfectly suited to the 9-12 age bracket and I would certainly recommend it to readers in this section. One of its strengths for me was that it was quite a traditional fantasy for younger readers which is quite unusual.

It was very fluid, fast paced and well written without using complicated language which would put it out of reach for children's comprehension. I did feel like there slightly too many main characters it could be streamlined slightly in that regard. I could also have done with a more thorough introduction to them at the beginning. With that having been said, I did enjoy the fact that it started straight in the action.

I liked the story within a story structure, too.

Hidden princes, magical artefacts, strange monsters... This book is a perfect blend of the traditional bread and butter fantasy tropes, perfect for a child's introduction to fantasy.

The Lucky Diamond, by Valinora Troy is a novel most appropriate for middle schoolers, but can be enjoyed by younger and older kids as well. The plot revolves around the characters Susan, Vicky, Alan and Cathy (twins), and their older sister Yvonne. While the twins are told to stay away from neighborhood dangers, they take a chance on an adventure because they have the help of a magic compass and a talking diamond.

With its talk of magic compasses, talking diamonds, this is obviously a book of fantasy and young readers LOVE this type of story. Think of The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, and The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe. The diction is appropriate for those middle school readers and after the book gets going, it leads the reader on a wonderful adventure.

What I liked most about the writing was the descriptions. I could see it clearly and that’s what makes the fantasy come alive. The description in the Great Forest were especially cool.

Fantastically Magical Read

What a wonderous story in Lucky Diamond by Valinora Troy. I have just become a fan of this author! I haven't read work from this author before, and I enjoyed this story. This is book one in the Lucky Diamond series, and I can't wait to read the next one. The characters were adventurous and almost the typical kids, except, they have a "magical compass." The twins, Cathy and Alan try not to listen whenever possible to their big sister, Yvonne. It's not as much fun, but they always seem to find trouble. Then, they meet Lucky, and maybe their luck is starting to change, but Lucky's isn't. This is a wonderful adventure into magic, and the innocence, yet trouble that kids can get into, especially, when magic is on their side. Lucky Diamond is a definite recommendation by Amy's Bookshelf Reviews. I read this book, giving my honest and unbiased review. I look forward to reading many more stories by this author.

What an amazing debut fantasy for young readers. This book was perfectly pitched for fans like my 8-12 year olds. They adore books like CS Lewis Narnia and were delighted to read all about the magical land of Valinora Troy's Nivram. A land where dark magical beasts stalk the forests surrounding their town, where you are banished to meet your gate when you displease the town. When four sibling orphans come across a diamond called Lucky, the most magical of all beings, she requests their help to get her home safely to her homeland. The perilous quest begins that sees them venture high seas and mountains. This is a fast paced, gripping fantasy adventure that will have you glued to the pages. An absolute gem of read and hopefully not the last adventure in Nivram 💎 #theluckydiamond

Living diamonds, strange beasts, a wicked witch and five brave children and one fantastic adventure!

This is the perfect middle-grade fantasy. I loved the five siblings and their unbreakable bond. I love how they learn lessons and grow without even realising it. I love the land of Nivram and all its mystical creatures. This is a wonderful book for younger readers but it is also a fun, relaxing read for older ones.

This story was spot-on perfect for my ten-year old who loves fantasy and adventure, and it was fun for me to enjoy it with him. I don’t read a lot of fantasy because I sometimes get overwhelmed by the world building, but that was not the case for this book at all. I thoroughly enjoyed Troy’s wonderful writing style, the world she places us in, and the characters. At first, I was scrambling to figure out who each sibling was. However, Troy does a great job of threading in details throughout the story, so we get to know the siblings and enjoy their unique qualities. They are all interesting and likeable in their own ways. It took me a while to understand the significance of the little pictures at the beginning of each chapter—loved this small but important detail!

The story keeps us marching along on one big adventure, and obstacles keep getting thrown into the siblings’ path. The hazards along the way were original, eerie, and kept us on the edge of our seats. I got a real kick out of the witches, in particular, and my son loved the “Marvins.”

This is a smooth, fun readaloud for families. It's wholesome and engaging. Plus, kiddos can draw the map of their adventure. The story of the land, as told by Lucky was beautifully written—I could see it myself.

TITLE: The Lucky Diamond
AUTHOR: Valinora Troy
Star Rating: 4

‘A sweetly told, magical story for 9 – 12 year olds.’ The Wishing Shelf

REVIEW
I must begin by saying how much I loved the cover of this children´s novel. It really grabbed me, and I think it will grab most 9 – 12 year olds too. Now, on to the plot. In a nutshell, this is the story of a bunch of kids (siblings) living in a very magical land. But when they meet a magical, talking diamond - yes, a talking diamond! – called Lucky, they all end up embarking on a thrilling quest where they might, just might, end up in the scary Great Forest. And, trust me, you don´t want to go in there!
For the most part, this is a very enjoyable story helped along by solid pacing and an array of interesting fantasy characters. I also like the fact they have a magic compass which tends to send them the right way. I'm thinking of getting one for myself! The author is an accomplished writer who knows how to get things moving, throwing in plenty of twists and turns to prevent the young reader from closing the book too soon.
Personally, I did feel the beginning was a little jumbled and lacked the ´POW!` factor. But a third of the way through, the author seems to find her feet and, from there on in, it's an exciting ride.
To sum up. I´m very happy to recommend this fantasy novel to children aged 9 – 12 who enjoy lots of monsters and mayhem. Also, I think parents will like the strong family bond which runs through the story. If you happen to be a 10 year child who´s a big fan of C S Lewis´s magical novels, you´ll probably enjoy this. But remember – don´t go into the Great Forest!

n the land of Nivram, not everyone has what they need to survive. Yvonne, Susan, Vicky, Cathy, and Alan are five siblings, all under the age of thirteen, who use their cunning to survive the ruthlessness of their hometown of Lowdar. Orphaned after their parents’ death and the later exile of their uncle, they must hide in order to keep from being tossed into the Great Forest themselves. A chance encounter helps to set the children on a new path, introducing them to a world of the unexpected beyond the confines of the life they have always known. This book is designed to appeal to younger middle grade readers, especially those with an interest in fantasy stories like The Chronicles of Narnia. Told in the third person, this book shifts perspectives from chapter to chapter, giving readers insight into what is happening with each character along the way, even if they are not in the same location as one another. Disappointingly, the beginning of the story lacks the development necessary to create a believable foundation for the action that follows, which can be off-putting to some readers. However, if they press on, readers will be rewarded by an engaging and action-packed adventure. Good writing and smooth pacing keep readers connected to the story amidst the many fantasy characters and circumstances appearing within it. Younger middle grade readers will appreciate this accessible introduction to fantasy literature and may be inspired to continue reading future installments in the series.

I really enjoyed The Lucky Diamond, but I know my thirteen year old self would have absolutely loved it and would be on tender hooks waiting for the next book.
The story follows the adventures of five orphaned children after they find Lucky the Diamond and get caught in an adventure with involves a flying canoe, Mirehogs (a sort of monster), witches and a sad story about a kingdom divided.
Juggling five main characters is a bit of a feet, but it can be done, and Valorina carries it off. I loved the way she managed to make all of the children distinctive. It reminded me a bit of Five Children and It especially as Lucky had her own magical powers and personality but worked within defined limits. The sketching of the characters was certainly well done. I think my favourite was Alan, but all of them were well drawn, and I’m sure readers will find their own favourites.
The world building is very strong. It reminded me of the Wizard of Oz series, where everywhere new and exciting ideas are presented and very well drawn. It draws you in and feels both familiar and believable but at the same time very clever and imaginative.
The finally was very well done. Tense and edged with danger and with a resolution that was kept you on the edge of your seat.
In the kindle version, I could not see the map which I think would have made the story a bit easier to follow, and I would have loved to see more illustrations of the characters and events, but overall this is a very solid four stars from adult me, but a definite five stars from thirteen year old me. Read it and let yourself be swept along into a fantastic and exciting adventure in a beautifully imagined magical world.

This YA book is an absolute delight with echoes of fairy tales, Narnia and Middle Earth. Five orphaned siblings engage on a quest to help a new friend and encounter many dangers and adventures along the way. They use their wits as well as the magical gifts they received from their mother to guide them along their way.

The world that Valinora creates is familiar and yet very strange with new customs and rules that the characters must abide by. Nivram is a believable place with beautiful descriptions within the book. The main characters are well-rounded and interesting and the evil characters are well-written and suitably awful. The focus on twins is fascinating and a lovely theme running throughout the novel.

I read it in one sitting as I couldn’t put it down. I will definitely be purchasing a copy of this book for my ten year old niece who is a fan of fantasy and adventure novels and look forward to future reads from this author.

Thanks to Blackberry Book Tours for the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

The Lucky Diamond is the first book in the series so I will start with a review before moving on to Revenge of Queen Rose.

Yvonne, Susan, Vicky, Cathy and Alan are forced into hiding when their Uncle Matt is banished from Lowdar.

Five Years later they come across a Diamond, but this is not a normal precious stone. This Diamond is called Lucky, she is the princess of the Ancient Order of Diamonds and is far away from home.

Lucky leads them on a mission to assist her in her journey back home. With Lucky’s enemy Queen
Rose hunting Lucky down along the way. What follows is many dangerous adventures and friends made along the way.

This is a sweet fantasy story with plenty of fun and adventure.

It takes you into a magical world where anything is possible.

The Children show how working together helps them in their mission and it is lovely to see.

Overall, a sweet and magical children’s fantasy chapter book.

Five orphaned children find themselves on an adventure across a continent to try and save the life of one of their friends.
If that isn't a classic fantasy adventure premise what is?
This is a great adventure book for middle graders, with plucky teenagers that have their own magical items that only work for them, and a magical talking diamond that is being hunted. The book has some great worldbuilding, but I felt like that keeping track of the name was a tad confusing. It's a definite recommendation to kids aged 8-12, but any adult who likes easy-to-read fantasy will also enjoy it.
I appreciate that debut author Valinora Troy has avoided many of the usual pitfalls that debut authors face, such as a lack of editing or proofreading. It is clear that she has done the hard work necessary to craft a book that is a perfect fit for her genre, and I am glad to have read it.

This is the modern day Peter Pan. I have not seen nor heard of a book that was as intriguing and enjoyable as Peter Pan until now. This is book is even better though as it has a broader area of play plus more involved and way stronger players. Author Valinora Troy has really out done herself with this book plus out done Peter Pan story entirely. This book seriously can be the next big movie release from Disney and/or Warner Brothers. I don't do spoilers but I will give everyone a hint who reads this Book. IT IS ENTHRALLING! Now go buy it!

This is the first novel by this author and is a middle grade children's novel.
The story follows five siblings who are in danger and have to go on a journey.
Whilst reading I got some Chronicles of Narnia vibes, so if you like those stories or fantasy in general then this series may appeal to you.

The writing flowed easily and it didn't feel slow or sluggish which is always good, as I can find sometimes that fantasy novels can be a little slower paced. But I didn't find it here.

It was an easy read, with likable characters and an interesting story.
