A Fast Urban Fantasy Series with a Badass Female Bounty Hunter
My name is Rebel Weston and I'm going to hunt you down...
My talent for tracking has made me a damn good bounty hunter for the past decade, but it's also gotten me solidly under the thumb of notorious casino boss, Kai Warcloud.
I need to break free before I kill him or he kills me. The solution? I have to help Kai track down the notorious con artist Laurent Moreau from Texas to New Orleans and drag him back to pay his debts. Just one last job... and I'm finally free.
The catch? Moreau looks like an angel but has the soul and fangs of a vampire with an entourage of bloodthirsty friends to match. Until I catch him, Kai is happy to use my brother as leverage.
But I have an edge: I'm a Spirit Walker, able to commune with the dead. Since vamps are already halfway there, this should be a piece of cake, right?
WRONG.
It's one hell of a leap to go from bail bonds and bounties to dragging supernaturals back to Texas on the back of a chain, but I'm up for it. My back may be against the wall, but I'm the kind of girl who comes out swinging.
Ready for a fast, fun adventure with a snarky heroine who doesn't pull punches? This one's for you. This is BOOK 1 in an episodic/serialized urban fantasy with new books coming out each month! So go ahead.... binge a little.
Perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Ilona Andrews, Patricia Briggs, Devon Monk, Seana Kelly, Michael Anderle, Shannon Mayer, Annette Marie, BR Kingsolver, and Debra Dunbar.
The Rebel Magic series features action, magic, mystery deep in the heart of New Orleans. If you're a fan of vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, mages, and love a hint of romance, this these stories are for you!
I have always loved the supernatural, starting with an early-age addiction to the Queen of Paranormal, Anne Rice (God rest her soul, that brilliant woman!).
My motto is simple: write fast, publish fast, keep it fun. My stories are snarky, edgy, occasionally bloody, and seriously addictive!
I stumbled across this series randomly on Kindle Unlimited. I'm a big urban fantasy fan but, unfortunately, lots of problems plague the genre. This series suffers none of them. I was very, very pleasantly surprised.
Pacing: The pacing was perfect. The book was such a breath of fresh air. The book is short, but it doesn't feel underdeveloped. I would even say that it is much better-paced than a lot of full-length novels at the moment as it does not drone on unnecessarily. Many other books could follow this one's example. It is a truly well-written short story.
The main character: Rebel herself was a very competent but complex character. I felt her mix of toughness and vulnerability. The series really embraces the heroine's Native American ethnicity, which I thought added a really interesting angle. Unlike the Mercy Thompson series, which dips in and out of her heritage, this book is rooted in it.
Characters and relationships: The characters are diverse, interesting, multifaceted and well-developed. The relationships are even more so. Rebel, Kai, Ms Dottie and Gael were all fascinating characters. Gael, especially, was such a complicated character and so well written. In particular,
Setting: The setting of New Orleans was an excellent choice for the novel and added so much culture and atmosphere.
The covers: Also, a shout-out for the cool covers and the lack of shirtless men!
Formatting issues: My only caveat would be that there were some formatting issues at the start of the novel, which could put people off (which would be a massive shame)! And also, there were some proofing issues. However, these were minor editing issues which did not detract from my enjoyment.
Conclusion: This is such a solid urban fantasy book that it really deserves to have a much higher readership. The author is certainly talented. I very much look forward to reading the rest of this series.
I think I found a new fave indie author - Stephanie Plum meets Ghost Whisperer
Thank gods for Storyorigin or I’d never have found this indie author. I could not put this book down! Loved it - loved the MC, the storyline, the dark & delicious Southern ambience, the twists & turns, the sassy dialogue & humor and certainly the sizzling promise of a future romance (one can hope). Can’t wait to continue with the Rebel Magic series. Rebel is a Comanche bounty hunter working her (or actually her brother’s) way out of servitude to Kai Warcloud, a casino boss & head of the largest Native American settlement. When she’s sent on a last errand to New Orleans, little does she know she’ll be hobnobbing with vampire masters, were alphas and Voodoo witches on this missing person’s gig. I loved Rebel, her sassy attitude and humor that bordered on an unhealthy disinterest for survival. Loved the feel of old New Orleans and the effortless way the author drew me into her world. The book provided a unique glimpse into spirit walking & vampire lore. I also liked that it had a bit of a reverse harem vibe as Rebel’s unique talent attracted high rank male players. It wasn’t quite like Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series - Rebel wasn’t prone to ridiculous accidents, but she kicks ass, is a bounty hunter and has a distinct sense of humor. The Louisiana vamp elements reminded me of True Blood (minus the sex - this book had naughty thought, but otherwise it was rather clean); it had more of an Anne Rice Vampire Lestat kind of vibe than anything else. I hope to read more about Dottie, Kai and Gael as these characters grew on me and they can doubtlessly provide Rebel with fun employment opportunities.
Recommended for fans of occult fantasy, vampire, werewolves and voodoo lore, New Orleans magic, strong and sassy bipoc heroines and easy-to-read action-adventure.

I wasn't expecting too much from this relatively short read, New Orleans, Vampires, Werewolves it's all been done before right? No, wrong this was a fantastic read with a completely badass bounty hunter in Rebel. Who goes from fairly run of the mill Bounty hunting jobs ( albeit she has the occasional help from the spirit world, she is after all a Cherokee spirit-walker ) to punching well above her weight class when she tracks what turns out to be a Vampire to New Orleans. Unlike other heroines Rebel doesn't come across as badass, but then two seconds later ends up in bed with a master of the Night type, yes she's aware of their sensuality and drop dead good looks (aren't they always?) But she's quite happy to kick ass and take names rather than run round the bedroom. It was fun to not only see her introduced to a plethora of Witches, Voodoo Queen's, Vampires and Werewolves all the while coming into her own powers and birthright. This was a very fast paced read, with plenty of supernatural action a good amount of well fleshed out side characters, with a fairly blunt prose that suited the Texas landscape and the Bayou equally. I will definitely be continuing the series.
Outstanding 1st book in the series. Normally the first book is a slow introduction of the characters with a small side story but not this author. The book hit all my favorite things in what promises me more great reading . The characters had great depth for this type of book , the scenery was described in a manner that I pictured in vividly in my imagination and the cover was probably the big draw for me. It caught my attention so that I read the blurb and was hopelessly hooked.
I'm giving this book 5 stars because it is a refreshing take on the supernatural genre but also because I am so heartened to find another female author who writes strong independent, kick ass women who don't swoon and give themselves up completely at the behest of their hormones. It was a strong start to a series and I am downloading book 2 now.
Rebel is a native American bounty-hunter with the ability to speak to ghosts, because of her older brother's addiction problems she is 100% engaged by Kai Warcloud's Texas casino to bring in non-payers, something she wants to ditch. Just when she thinks she has finally cleared her brother's debt, Rebel discovers he had run up thousands more dollars of debt gambling and drinking, but Kai offers her a one-off trade - find a New Orleans businessman and he will expunge her brother's debt.
But when Rebel gets to New Orleans she discovers that all the supernatural stories are a leetle too true for comfort, her mark is a vampire with supernatural powers which she cannot match. In addition, he appears to have put Kai's little sister in some kind of thrall, she might even be dead.
Brokering a deal between the Vampire king of New Orleans, the Shifter leader and Kai will take all of her abilities.
So look, this had nothing new, Patricia Briggs and C.E. Murphy to name but two have written series with a similar premise. In addition, there is definitely. potential love-quadrangle because all three male characters are super-hot. But it was a good read and I will be interested to see where the next book takes us.
What a quick read and I'm not gonna lie, I was interested. Vampires, witches, ghosts, Native American Spirit Walker.... But not in your face at first. It was a very smooth transition from realistic fiction (sort of) to fiction. Some humor, some conflict, some chemistry. I'm thinking of reading book 2. I'm curious to see where this goes for Rebel.
I love this story. It’s a good spin on tails of the past. Working full time and going to school full time don’t allow me to read it the way I wanted to. Every time I picked it up I was enthralled. This is a good book from start to finish. Buy it and get other people into it. I am on to the next one.
A solid start to a new series. What I like about this book is the heroine, Rebel, she's Native American, around thirty, wildly independent outspoken and has a self.depreciating sense of humor. Rebel is also a Raven Walker, someone who can see and interact with spirits, an ability she uses to help her in her job as a bounty hunter. For the last few years Rebel.has worked exclusively for Kai Warcloud who along with his family owns and operates Blackwoods casino. Rebel.does.not.like working for Kai but is trapped because her brother owes the casino a large amount of.money. Kai offers Rebel a job which will pay off the debt all in one go. There's a man in New Orleans who has swindled the casino of millions, if Rebel can go there and retrieve him her brothers debt will be wiped clean. Easy peasy right....................wrong. What Rebel doesn't know and Kai hasn't told her is that the monsters are real, vampires, werewolves and witches to name just a few and Laurent Moreau her target is one of them..................... This story flows, I read it in one go, (not that hard to do as it's less than two hundred pages) but still I couldn't stop reading, Rebel is fun, the three men/monsters she interacts with are incredibly hot, but Rebel resists them.easily, it sets up hints exiting times to come. But, there are fourteen books in the series so far and they all seem to be a similar word count my only quibble is that such short books do not leave much room for character and worldbuilding (unless it's written like a chapterbook) so with so much happening there's no time for anything not relevant to moving the story along. Example. Rebels backstory. But it's only book one.so with a happy heart I'm off to buy book two..........
I was an idiot and didn't read the synopsis clearly, yet was pleasantly surprised this turned into an supernatural bounty hunter type of story! A fun and fast read, with enough books in the series to binge read in a short time span
My kind of book. Rebel is thankfully not stupid. The plot moved along. The potential love interests are interesting and varied. I guess this could be considered a shorter book considering the page count, but thank you. No wasted blather to pad the book. I didn't skim. I can't remember the last time I didn't skim to finally get through a book.
Loved this. The plot was great, varied & interesting. The characters were fantastic. Very layered, serious & strong but funny. Rebel is a wonderful character with real world problems she's attempting handle. Then boom, her world expands. Will definitely read the next one
I was looking for a quick read and found this unexpected gem. The heroine was tough and witty. I liked her relationship with her love interests. And I love books about the supernatural. So, win, win and win.
I really enjoyed this book. I could hardly put it down. I’m glad there’s a lot for me to read. I can’t wait to see what happens with the three powerful men in her life.
I am looking forward to the next book. I really enjoyed the characters, the interaction and the indigenous aspect brought into the central portion of the main character
This is a very different bounty hunter story. It encompasses a witch, several werewolves, several vampires a ghost or two and a spirit walker. Excellent.
Wow really enjoy the sassy and strong female character in this series. Amazing story telling, plots, intrigue and action. Cannot wait to read the next book
I loved this book. Alex is a new author for me and one I'll keep reading as well. Severely ADD, I don't read many books straight through but am happy to say this one is a winner. Great writing and great characters.
A sassy, Native American bounty hunter, Rebel is tasked with a bounty to clear the gambling debts run up by her brother. Unknown to her, her target is a vampire and his location in New Orleans, is where the Supernatural are in abundance. Rebel has powers of her own, she is a Spirit Walker with strong ties to the Raven, her spirit animal but she still needs all the help she can get.
I absolutely enjoyed this book and I'm normally a tough cookie. The heroine is written so well she's believable, none of that I'm a one woman army business. I like that the series looks like it will evolve and the characters can only grow. Most of all I love that the heroine isn't the cliche blond, blue eyed "bombshell" who can't walk in a straight line because she's seen a handsome man.
Highly recommend for a decent read that makes you want to know more.
Loved this book. I really like the characters and the fast pace. I finished the book in a day. I just couldn't put it down. The dialogue is witty and fun without being silly. if you are familiar with and enjoyed the Jane Yellowrock series, you may also enjoy this. It's different from the Jane Yellowrock series, but it just reminded me of those books. I'm looking forward to the next books in the series.
This was a great way to start a new series. I thoroughly enjoyed the well written and engaging story line along with the endearing character work. I can't wait to see what happens next.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
New Orleans... Vampires, werewolves, and witches...oh,my
All my favorite things in one book. Strong character development with interesting secondary personalities. Really loving this author. Can't wait to read more of her stuff! Highly recommend.
