Finding Us, book 3 of the Phillips Family Services, is the story of Isaiah and Briana. They have the right feelings at the wrong time and love slaps them in the face when they least expect it. Even though it seems impossible, they'll get their happily ever after, but when? ~~ Disclaimer: This project is a slow burn that beta readers described as "an amazing emotional roller coaster". It ends in a cliffhanger and contains references to severe and persistent mental illness and its side effects.
Having two broken souls find one another and connect on a unique platform of friendship was absolutely perfect! When their world brought them together to heal, they were solid. To know that a HEA could potentially be for them both was foreseeable, or so I thought, only to see "NOBODY" may win in the end. It may indeed been just the season that they were meant to be. Either way, when it was good, it was great!
This was an outstanding read with realistic situationships, that caused hurt, love, grief, and growth. I am looking forward to see if they were healed and how they move, going forward, but satisfied if this is it! Great job HP!
As time goes on, the world evolves. With evolution things change, even the books that we read. Mental health and wellness have been taboo topics in the black community for many years. But as we embark on a new year, with a bunch of changes that have been forced on us, along with a few welcoming changes, Honesty Price has decided to give us a book that delves deep into mental health and all things concerning it. Isaiah and Briana both are married to spouses with mental health issues. Not the functioning kind either. There's no quick fix for what they have going on, and there is no quick fix for their spouses. Group therapy is what's recommended, and it's there that Briana and Isaiah find solace along with a few other things that leave them questioning their friendship. "And maybe those feelings have been growing in a way we don't know how to label. It's not like we're dating, but I do feel... I don't know. It's..."
Briana has been married to Kevin since the age of twenty-one. A whirlwind romance filled with laughter and joy. Briana a hairdresser and Kevin an artist, they were young and carefree. Things were good, until they weren't. Kevin's minor mental health issues have snowballed. Leaving Briana to try and hold everything together. After falling and bumping her head, literally, Briana decides that not only does her husband need help, but she does as well. "She met and married that boy when they were twenty-one. Twenty-one, Rose. No way she knew what she was getting into, and she stuck it out. She's sticking it out as we speak." Getting her husband and his family to agree to the care he needs is one thing, but Briana getting the care she needs is also an issue. After visiting a group for spouses of people with mental health issues, things take a drastic turn in her life and it's kind of hard for readers to determine if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
Isaiah has been with his wife Shonda for eight years, but half of their marriage has been trying to get her mental health under wraps. It started with impulsive decisions and ended with her hearing voices. With Isiah being a periodontist, he doesn't have the time to care for his wife like he should, but even with hiring an aide, Shonda still was a handful. After Shonda is almost charged with kidnapping, Isaiah starts to feel like things may have taken a turn for the worst. When Shonda's medical bills start to pile up on him, Isaiah has to make some tough decisions. "We've been together for eight years married for seven and the last four have been hell. I love her, but I can't like. Some of that time with her wrecked me. I'm still not right behind it. I sleep... well when I sleep, I sleep better knowing someone else is responsible for making sure she stays in the house, makes sure she gets her injections." Up until Briana walked into his life he had been okay with not saying much about his feelings, but it's something about her that has him wanting to open up more and do things differently.
I have to say, the originality of this plot was amazing. I've read books where the authors have touched on mental health and even therapy, but I've never read a full novel that not only talked about multiple mental health issues, but the issues the spouses deal with as well. The storyline is heavy and will have you battling your moral compass most of the book. Briana and Isaiah are both married to other people, but the author will make you feel so much compassion for these characters that you'll want them to find solace any way that they can. This book is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone. And although you don't have to read the connected books to this story to enjoy it, this book does end on somewhat of a cliffhanger and there will be a part two that's set to release this summer. I will definitely be tuned in to see how these character's story ends.
I thought I wouldn't need a trigger warning...I was WRONG!
This book! This story! These characters! All of the things! There are so many layers to this story and a simple book review really wont do justice to how powerful of a storyteller Honestly Price is. She laid it all on the line for us. The journey that readers go on with Bri, Ike and family, is so necessary. Especially in the Black community. Marriages, Churches etc. This story hit all the hot spots. It's not a typical romance, but it has almost all the elements of one. This is a journey, a marathon if you will. Of overcoming, forgiveness, growth, humility, love, sacrifice, support, and surrender. Be prepared to go deep into yourself. And hopefully when you finish this book and series, you'll feel encouraged and inspired to receive support as well as offer it.
I had the pleasure of receiving this ARC of “Finding Us”. This journey with Bri and Ike was not for the weak. When you both are caregivers who do you turn to when you need to be cared for? Highlighting their need and not just the need of the individuals being cared for was what we needed! You did a wonderful job. I hope you all can show support when this book is released on 2/18.
I was fortunate enough to receive a free ARC of Finding US. This love story was such a slow burn that I didn't even realize there wasn't any sex until it showed up lol. The stress Bri and Ike endured having spouse's that have mental illness was debilitating. Bri's in-laws infuriated me to no end. I wanted to fight them so badly. Ike's support system was definitely better and his wife's ability to provide input and some legal framework was terrific. My heart broke when Bri said that Ike was no one when her brother-in-law asked. I knew this was a cliffhanger but damn!! I need part 2 asap!
After reading this emotionally exhausting, character driven story, not only did I feel the depth of emotions expressed by Ike and Briana...but I longed for the support that they provided each other! Because whew chile, this story definitely takes you through it!
Sometimes as a reader, you can get so caught up in good writing that it can feel like it's happening to you. I was just that invested! And although I wouldn't consider this a conventional love story by any means, what Ike and Briana share was not only unplanned, but exactly what they needed from each other despite how they came in to each other's lives. Where they go from here though...I can't wait to find out! In the meantime, be prepared to be consumed by these characters, as you will be drawn to them from start to finish!
This book was provided to me as a free advanced copy.
There is so much to be said about this book. This series has been an amazing one but Ike and Brianna’s story was beyond amazing. The layers of being in a vortex of mental illness and not truly having anyone who understands were so beautifully written in this story. The love without limits and expecting a show to drop was something Ike and Brianna never experienced, until each other. For most of the book, I wanted to punch Richard. Rose and Roland were a close second. I cannot wait until book two because there is something beautiful that will come from this.
Honesty Price has written a story of significant importance in dealing with Mental Illness and the effects it has not only the one suffering but on the caregiver and their loved ones as well. Admittance is key, open communication is necessary, self care is mandatory and having a support system is life saving.
Briana and Kevin married young with the world ahead of them living a happy life with their daughter. Until Kevin became I’ll and life wasn’t so happy anymore. Briana did what she was supposed to do to care for her husband keeping his secret of a promise slowly drained the life from her as he became more distant, closed off and difficult each day angry with the world and his circumstance, taking it all out on the one person he knows won’t leave him. With no one to talk with or who can understand, Briana felt alone and lost until she seeks help.
In seeking help, Briana joins a support group and meets Isaiah. Isaiah is married to Shonda and has always battled with Shonda’s illness manifesting in their lives. They have a pattern and know what it takes to give Shonda the help she needs. Isaiah wants the best for her and will do anything to care for her. He just wants his life and his wife back. But carrying the weight of the care responsibly mentally and financially for years is taxing his mind and their bank account. Embarrassment and guilt of a decision he must make in order to continue her level of care finds Isaiah making one of the most difficult choices he never thought he’d have to entertain.
Briana and Isaiah cultivate a friendship in group that’s beautifully written displaying how important is it to have support from someone who understands and can relate without having to speak. I felt that was their connection, knowing what the other needed as they became close leaning heavily on one another in ways that most won’t understand, but in doing so, they discover how loneliness can be detrimental and the need for a connection to someone becomes urgent and finding that urgency in each other becomes the consolation they both need. This slow burn comes to a roaring fire as the heat between them becomes an inferno that can no longer be ignored. Could they, should they, will they?
This story is an exceptional read from the introduction to the very last word, I was lulled into the lives of these characters who took me on an emotional journey pulling on my heart while feeding my soul with a complex story of love and loss. I was able to get to know the characters and what they’re dealing with mentally and physically, see and understand family dynamics, the importance of communication, having a support system, and self care being a necessity in loving someone who struggles with mental illness but most importantly trying not to lose yourself in the process.
This story took me through it emotionally. I wanted to scream and smack some characters as I wept for others. Yes, this story had my eyes sweating because I felt their hurt, pain, sadness, loneliness, frustration, anger but also their need and desire to connect with something or someone that can make them feel alive, desired, wanted and not a slave to their circumstance which is an testament to the brilliance in the writing ability this author possesses.
Honesty Price did a phenomenal job depicting her characters who are likable, strong individuals that deal with hardships of life. Their interactions with each other made the story feel authentic as their circumstances required real emotion and reactions that played out earnestly, truthful, and believable as she stripped them bare exposing their raw truth as it was evident everyone involved lost a bit of themselves and their lives. Whether you are the one suffering or are the caregiver, It’s is difficult to watch the life you loved disappear loosing a bit of yourself in the process.
Choice is a powerful thing and no one knows what’s best for you better than you. In life you have to do what best to be your best and I think that’s what Briana, Isiah, Shonda and Kevin did….choose what was best for them.
This was an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) that I had the pleasure of reading. I cannot wait for the masses to experience this amazing story. I wish the absolute best for Honesty Price who is an exceptionally talented writer and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future. Thank you Honesty.
First of all, let me tell y'all that I'm an avid listener of audiobooks, but I was given this book by the author to read and leave an honest review. So here I go (took longer for me to finish, but I finished). This book deals with mental health issues and how it affects the individual and their caregiver and families. It was a very emotional rollercoaster ride for married couples, Bri and Kevin, as well as Ike and Shonda and how the 2 (Ike and Bri) find each other in a support group. They legit found each other and you feel that they belong together but just not at the right time. You will be pulled into their lives and feel all their ups and downs. This book is definitely a slow burn and will leave you with a cliffhanger. Honesty Price wrote the hell outta this book...stay tuned for the next book!! This was a free ARC provided by the author.
Thank you again Honesty Price for a free copy of this book for an honest review ✨
My emotions were ALL over the place reading this book. I didn’t even know how to feel about a lot of the characters.
Bri and Kevin’s story was heartbreaking. To know how their relationship started and then how it ended was so sad. Their last conversation together had me so emotional. It felt so final. What can you do when you really want to help someone you love but the situation is completely out of your control. It’s not even in their control. Listening to him tell her how he was losing the battle was so hard to read.
Seeing how the family dynamic was impacted by Kevin’s mental illness was sad too. In a lot of ways they were turning on each other because it was so hard for them to deal with the reality of the situation. Kevin needed more help than they could possibly give him. The harder it became for Kevin to keep fighting the more they all needed someone to blame. Grief changes people and you don’t always get to see their best side.
As far as Bri and Isaiah, I definitely fell in love with them but I thought it was poor timing on their parts. They were both in such vulnerable places and instead of dealing with their shit they kind of got lost in each other. They could’ve saved each other a lot of heart ache and hurt feelings by just being friends until they were both in a better position to be anything more. I’m more than hoping for a reconciliation in the next book 👀👀
This book is phenomenally good! Finding Us is the third installment of this series and it tackles mental health that was previously introduced in the first two books. It goes in depth about the effects of loving a person with a mental illness - not only on those who love them, but are in close relationships in close proximity to it. You feel the angst, the tug of war, and the difficulties with nearly every aspect of life...its such an emotional rollercoaster, that you understand the choices nearly every character makes! There are other smaller stories that help support and break up steady pace of the main story. This is simply great writing and story telling, point blank periodT.
But the genre is romance…and you get slow burn, pay attention, wait for it, suck your teeth and bite that bottom lip tasty love. Bri and Ike realize that not only did they find a like minded partnership to provide a emotional support and understanding without judgement, they actually found something beautiful. Whew bay-beee! This book has all the things that will have you taking deep breaths, smiling, sniffling, laughing, fanning and exhaling! This doesn't end with a HEA but it is clear a follow-up story is hopefully coming sooner than later!!!!! This was a free ARC provided by the author.
What a ride!! I was able to get access to this book for free as an ARC and I am so glad that I did. I also plan on ordering the paperback because it was THAT GOOD! This story is not like any other that I've read and while it was very emotionally moving (you will feel alllll of the feels) it also shared a beautiful love story unlike any other. Emotional support is sooo important and Bri & Ike give that to one another! Their love hits them at a time where they need it most but the timing is not the best so it was interesting to watch them deal with that. Their story is a good one and I highly recommend it! You will not regret getting to know Ike & Bri!
I was excited that I was able to get a free book as an ARC provided by the author. This is an excellent book. Mrs. Price did not disappoint. I loved the slow burn of Bri and Ike's relationship. I'm kind of in my feelings about how this book ended. But I am looking forward to hear more from Bri and Ike.
I received an ARC of this book and I feel very blessed that I was in that number. This book has so many emotional layers. It follows the friendship of Ike and Bri, both married to people with some severe mental health issues. Both dealing with with their own feelings and being the emotional support for their spouses. Both not having the emotional support they need. What they discover between them is really beautiful and complicated and at absolutely the worst time. This isn’t your normal love story, it’s very much a slow burn but the journey Honesty takes you on is so worth it. I was completely invested by the end of chapter 1. I won’t go into details because I don’t want to spoil anything but Honesty wrote her ass off. There’s really no other way to say it. I cannot wait to PURCHASE the book when it drops and I am anxiously waiting to see what happens next. This is book 3 in the Phillips Family series, and while you don’t have to read the first 2 books, I suggest you do.
This is my second title from Ms. Price and it. is. excellent. Poignant and insightful sentiments between broken characters, hilarious banter between siblings and friends, and love expressed in the most unexpected way.
Ms. Price is an extremely gifted storyteller. I found myself so invested in the outcome of these characters - all of them, really - I couldn’t put it down. Building up the anxiety over the couples’ respective situations, to the imploding relationships between the loved ones, all so angry and lost about the uncontrollable hands they had been dealt. It was clear that the author wanted to convey respect for people who are dealing with mental illness, and at the same time share the realities of the wreckage that illness can leave in its wake.
This ends on a cliffhanger, but I promise you will have no regrets picking this one up. Five stars, all the way.
This is a NTM author that I was familiar with with never read her work. I received a free ARC copy. This book reels you in after the first few pages because it deals with real life issues that I’ve been reading about with Kim and Kanye. I never looked at how a spouse is affected when dealing with their significant other and their mental illness. I was blown away by the organic chemistry that formed when two strangers got to know each other by attending group therapy together and forming a bond through trauma. The beauty is this story had me wiping away unexpected tears. The trials and tribulations that these families face while ignoring the needs of their loved ones spouses had me all over the place. I laughed, cried and fell in love with Briana and Isaiah. This is definitely a 5 star read.
This book was an absolute delicious slow burn. Hands down one of the best I've read in a while. The topic was very heavy but dealt with with so much care it was to the point where I didn't want to sleep or put the book down. I felt like I was watching this play out like a movie on the pages. Great writing and story telling. The character development was one of the best I've read and I've read lots and lots of book but only a handful of authors have the talent to really development a character and make you connect with the character and the story. You have gained a new fan. I look forward to reading "Fixing Us" and the rest of your catalog. Job well done on Ike and Bri xo
There is so much to say but I’ll try and keep it short. I had the honor of receiving an advance reader’s copy of this book and ba-be, let me tell you, Honesty Price did not disappoint. Sis wrote her ass off do you hear me. The subject matter was heavy. It was deep. And it was real. Mrs. price gave life to something I think most would find difficult to talk about and surly wouldn’t have the courage to write about. Oh, and did I mention a bomb slow burn love story that will have you hooked from the first conversation? Simply amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I felt so many emotions reading this: laughter from Allison craziness, annoyed by ALL of the Phillips showing their asses at every turn, tears for everything Bri had to endure on her own, & joy with how the friendship between Bri & Ike slowly developed bonding through their experiences dealing with a spouse with mental health issues. I even shed some tears because of hard choices that had to be made with each character. I can't wait for the conclusion of Fixing Us this summer. Great job!
I received an advanced readers copy of Finding Us. I don’t think I have ever been to sad, mad, irritable, or joyous in one book. The characters are written beautifully and its tells a story where you just don’t know what decision to make. Its been a while since I have read tension written so well. There is literally no right or wrong…you just are. You will spend your time in the book constantly questioning “what would I do?”
This was a difficult one to read, especially if you have ever been the care giver of someone with medical/mental health issues. But it was so worth it. Sometimes we get lost in the symptoms and forget that the person giving the care is a person too. Trauma bonds are a real life situation and Bri & Ike even more real. But if you keep pressing, you’ll see that light at the other side. And that goes for real life and in this book.
The end of this was so very hard for me. The topic of the book in its whole hits too close to home but the ending took me out and reeled me in all at the same time. Never have I ever. Great read❤️❤️
On a less serious note, Ike’s personally has had me over here lmao in the most inappropriate times haha. HP really had fun with this character! Did her thing!!
Whew!! What a story! What a dynamic! I loved this story touches on mental illness and it effects that but just touch the person suffering from mental illness but the people who love and care for them. Ike and Brianna definitely have been through so much, but no one seems to understand the toll that caring and loving someone with an illness can on those in the day to trenches. Well written, well developed!! Can’t wait for book 2!!
Bri and Ike meet while coming to terms with their respective spouses’ mental health challenges. They forge a bond that neither knew was possible or needed, but responsibility and guilt keep their relationship from developing into more.
I can’t wait to see if they go from being ‘nobody’ to one another in this new season of their lives to being one another’s ‘person’ and have a HEA.
If "it's complicated" were a book, then this would definitely be a prime example. I was so emotionally invested and yet frustrated at the messiness of being human and seeking respite from life. The author conveyed that things are truly not one dimensional and even good people fall from grace. Eagerly anticipating the next booxk. *This was a free ARC.
Not gonna lie this was a hard read for me. I had to take my time and come back to it multiple times. Had me all in my feelings. I'm usually Team Happily Ever After and I felt some kind of way about that. 🙂 Even with that Honesty did a great job on this story. I'm definitely a fan!
I nomally don't read a book when it ends on a cliffhanger. However, This story was definitely a emotional roller-coaster. The book was well written and the characters had great chemistry. Ike and Bri's friendship was fun and i enjoyed their banter. They helped each emotionally until they blurred lines. Can't wait te see what happens in the next book.
This was… a lot to take in. I have relatives who have mental health issues and I’ve read other books with realistic depictions of similar situations in the past, but this was so freaking emotional for me. I thoroughly enjoy it. Even the hard to cope with moments reeled me in. I seriously can’t wait for the next installment of this family saga because, my God, my God.
This one was tough. I have no experience with knowing anyone who has a member of their family in a facility, but man do I salute them, it's tough. While I enjoyed the story of Bri and Ike, I kinda wish they kept it strictly ESP and friends. Once the line is crossed its hard to get back
