Caroline described her life as ordinary. She and her husband, Greg, lived a comfortable life in a large house in a quaint coastal New England town north of Boston. Her two grown daughters lived nearby. To alleviate her boredom, she had her best friend, Noel, a woman still as wild as she was when they met in college, who entertained Caroline with her tales of world travels and romantic encounters. And so life went on…until one day, Caroline returned from walking her dog to find her life turned upside down. She was suddenly immersed in a terrifying mystery and nothing would ever be the same again.

According to my KU library, I downloaded this book in January, 2022. I do not know why. I do not know who recommended it, where I saw it, or how it ended up in my library. It was just THERE!

I went in blind so didn't even know what the story was about before I cracked the binding. *I mainly read romance and was surprised that it turned out to be a mystery.

The story is told flawlessly in 3rd person narrative with flashbacks that move the story along. I have very very strong feelings about a few of these characters and will keep those feelings to myself.

This book employed some of my favorite aspects of storytelling:

Chekhov's Gun - Every prop was used, every scene had reason
Red herrings - Hey, look over there - where? Oh never mind
Visually written - the first scene of the story made me think this was going to be a very different tale.

I 100% recommend this story. It was a quick read.

Well, I'm Stunned.

I found "Stunning" to be a great, fast-paced read. I felt myself trying to figure out the mystery right along with the characters, but I didn't even come close, even though the clues were there.

Bwyond the mystery, the characters are what really made this book enjoyable for me. Caroline seems unlike me in many ways, but many of her feelings were so relatable. I feel the author did an excellent job allowing the reader to get into the different characters' heads and to feel empathy for most of them.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who devours true crime content, especially those who know and love New England. I hope we see more novels from Catherine Rymsha.
