3/5

This was such a disappointing sequel.
I probably enjoyed the first volume way too much and my expectations were way too high.

The storyline does go forward, but very very little.
This new character is probably the best choice for this volume otherwise it would have been a complete mess.

I don't know tho if they will keep adding different characters in every volume, what I know is that I'm starting to feel very confused on what's the purpose of this series.
I hope in the next volume we will get some answers...

"In this world where there is light, there must be shadows where there is good, there must be evil."

Chang Sheng's second volume of Yan starts on the streets of Taipei, where Yan and Higa Mirai face off against a giant robot dispatched by Flora Technologies. Higa Mirai's so-called "reinforcements" not only possess superpowers but also claim to be survivors of the explosion at the research facility! This begs the question about what actually happened 30 years ago. Thirteen is from Flora Technologies, given the permission to develop self awareness, tin it's new form it seeks out revenge, it's target is all humankind. With chaos fast approaching can they figure out the truth amongst it?

The revenge story very much continues in this volume however the focus is more on the character of Miku. I liked this shift as her abilities of seeing five minutes into the future are truly tested. Her frustrations with trying to fix things does make the reader sympathise with her yet her determination drives the story on.

The returning character of the detective was great, I love how he balances out the group dynamic. With the introduction of the new character "Rabbit" there are interesting shifts in who believes his backstory and how his abilities will either help or make things worse for them.

The artwork once again was incredible. The fight sequences were crazy and you did have to take your time taking everything in.

I did again enjoy reading Yan, I can't wait to see where the story goes in the next volume.

Many thanks to @titanmanga @titancomics for a copy of Yan Volume Two which is out now.

tfw u stay up till 4am to finish a book bc its that good (altho the first one was better by miles)? the start of this book dragged out a bit and the antagonist and the source of the main conflict turned out to be kinda lame, but its a departure from the usual graphic novel trope where the superheroes save the day and defeat evil — bc in this one, they don't. turned out to be a pretty chilling sci-fi story about the unchecked powers/ lack of civic consultation that's involved in designing autonomous and unmanned systems ... there's gonna be a 3rd volume coming out later this year!! ahhh!!!

God I am so seated. I never felt so inspired by a ragtag group of maybe-heroes since mayyyybe ‘20th Century Boys’ it’s just fucking fun. I’ll be devastated if Yan dies, but I have a feeling she’ll bounce back since the series is named for her lol.

Eh got a little wonky in this volume, however, the story does unfold. Im kinda worried they might try to stretch this one thin though.

The art is incredible once again. The new villain is a little generic. I’m really starting to like the characters.

This second volume was just as good as the first: stunning graphics, plenty of action, and a thought-provoking storyline. It's a book you want to read several times because it is so visual and visceral.

Story: More of Yan's history comes to the fore as a new opponent appears - one deeply connected to her past.

The story deepens a bit here as Yan gains new allies and terrifying new foes. The quality remains high and I greatly look forward to the next volume of this sci fi dystopian series. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.
