A frozen frontier, bloodied and bruised by the last great gold rush. But in the lawless wastes to the North, something whispers to the hindbrains of men, drawing them to a blighted valley where giant spider tracks mark the snow and impossible guns roar in the night.
To Brokehoof, where gold and blood are mined alike. Now, stumbling towards its haunted forests comes a woman gripped not by greed - but the snarling rage of a mother in search of her child.
Excellent surrealist horror comic centered on Alaskan gold rush. Great story. Terrific art. Best comic I've read in ages. Has the same fell as Alma Katsu's excellent supernatural retelling of the Donner tragedy in The Hunger.
A mother looking for her son in a dying boom town gets caught up in the near by mines golden web. I really liked this issue. I thought it was a solid start. The thing that stuck out the most is the language and how well it matched the era/each character. Also really liked the art and coloring! I will probably wait until the trade comes out instead of reading it in issues.
A splendidly atmospheric, violent, and emotionally-charged first issue. Gooden and Duke's artwork immerse you in this rough-and-tumble western world, and I really enjoyed the sepia-esque tones of the pages. The main protagonist is compelling - you feel her desperation as she tracks down her missing son through the Yukon. The Pale is an intimidating force of nature, and it alone makes me want to read the next issue. Spurrier cuts the issue at a point that feels natural and leaves you wanting the next one. If you enjoy westerns and horror, I reccomend this one.
