BREAK THE BONDS, FREE THE FAE

Becoming a faery was enough to keep me alive… but that's the only good it did me. Now, I've got a trash-load of magic I don't know how to use, and my skin's coated in pixie dust that keeps acting out violently.

On top of that, Ien is still hunting me and the other faeries. He wants to use us to break the bonds tying fae to their gone and forgotten mates, causing them constant pain.

If we can beat him to the punch and figure out a way to do it ourselves, we just might survive this.

It doesn't sound too difficult:

Break the bonds, free the fae.

But Ien's been three steps ahead of us this whole time… and we might just be playing right into his fingers.

Let me start by saying there was no need for this to be a trilogy. It could perfectly have been a duology. There weren't enough pages to make the second and third book separated.
Also the plot of this book was way messier than the last two. Many things happened that weren't well developed. I just wish there was more sustain to the plot. The world building was also lacking and I wished there was more of it. The romance was good but small things bothered me in the middle of the book, which threw me off a bit.

A good read

This is the final book in the Sacrificed to the Fae King series. We are in the fae world of Avalon. Noa, and her mate Auden, are working well together as a team. Now they are trying to figure out how to break all the bonds in Avalon in order to set the fae (the males, the females are referred to as “faeries.”) free from their pain due to broken bonds from the death of all the females. It was an interesting switch in the normal fae tropes that I have read. I liked the dynamic between the two main characters, and seeing Auden grow to a good partner that listens to his mate. Sure, he still got a bit “alpha” on her from time to time, but meh, I thought it was kinda hot.

World building and plot development was very good. Plot was engaging. My only criticism here would be that for 3 books to build up to this fight to save Avalon and its people from an evil fae really was over pretty quickly and without much ado. I think that happens a lot in these PNR books. I mean, I didn’t absolutely hate it, but I did want to comment on it.

We do get an epilogue 10 years after the final chapter. I do love it when we get to see what happened after. I enjoyed this book, and the series as a whole, although I think it would have benefitted if we had some chapters told from Auden’s POV. Most of the time, I really don’t like being stuck in one character’s head.

The whole series

The whole series was amazing draws you in and holds you. I love that the author chose to make Nova so well human. Often books make the main characters so unreachable but I could see myself along side her cheering on her choices and aching with her losses. An amazing series by a great author

Great exciting/ funny read

This book literally had me laughing out loud and gasping as the drama unfolded. At the end I really enjoyed the last chapter of the characters years later.

Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

Sometimes it was easy to forget that I liked me.

Notes: POV = 1st person, FMC
Main Characters: Noa isn’t physically strong, her strength lies in her mental fortitude. She’s got good morals and she’s patient and understanding. This is a great thing, even if there were a couple times that I wanted to scream because she was being way too forgiving toward the wrong people.
“It’s not generous, it’s fair. And life isn’t fair, so people have a responsibility to do the best we can at being fair to each other.”

Auden was trying his best and constantly learning and growing. He’s great.
“I hurt you,” he said, finally. “With what I said and did— that hurt you. And you wouldn’t let me talk to you, to fix it. And the entire way here I had to endure your sad resignation grinding away at my conscience because I hurt you.”

Side Characters: The side characters remained the same as they were in the previous books. I felt their ending was a bit cliche, though. I did end up enjoying Auden’s brothers, though. I would trust them, and Rollen was funny.
“Then let’s go,” I said, starting for the cave. Rollen grabbed the back of my shirt, tugging me backward. “Uh- uh. You’re a middle- of- the- group girl these days.”

Plot/Story: We finally find out Ien’s plan in this one, and our goal is to stop him. He also has to die, but Noa doesn’t want to do that. It was a little anticlimactic.

Overall:
This is a very light story. If you’re in the mood for that, I’d say go for it.

HEA

The author fixes everything wrong with most heroes in romances so that Auden is a person who treats the heroine with respect even if he doesn’t always get things right.

Auden and November both apologize, change, and grow when they make mistakes.

The author realistically portrays the angst accompanying “friends with benefits” and a lack of practical assessment about how physical intimacy leads to chemical release if oxytocin, which cements emotional bonds.

Dislikes
Explicit sex scenes, though both people respect each other, ask permission, are married and, unlike most other books, the author of this one seems to have some experience of what she’s talking about and doesn’t describe physiologically impossibilities, though some magical enhancement is explained as being due to the marriage bond.

Some cursing, but it’s mostly just Noa truthfully being caught off guard and it isn’t crude, malicious, or purposefully used to torment others. Noa doesn’t communicate well when she curses as she’s using it to convey an emotional overload, but it’s fairly rare and she does emotionally process what happens later and do her best to respond in a healthy way so I took no stars for this.

Why couldn’t faeries and fae share ownership of Avalon equally? The author has made equality a theme of the series that indicates the morality of the main characters. The remaining lack of equality in the ruling of Avalon in the HEA violates the tenets the author established for recognizing if someone or someplace is safe.

I deducted a star for the explicit sex scenes, which are not my thing, and the inequality in the HEA. Otherwise, I recommend the series. It’s possible to skim over most of the explicit scenes and still enjoy the story.

I really did like it but…

First, let me say that I love Nove and Auden. Second, Lola has created yet another complex and intriguing world. I really did like it but I’m left feeling a little cheated. Honestly, it just felt rushed and too short. I wish there was more to the conflict with the Spirit Fae, more on exactly what happened on Earth, more of the banter we love between N and A, and even the other women brought to Avalon. The world and story are just so great that I wish this one didn’t feel so rushed. I needed another 50 or so pages. Overall, this is a great story and wonderful world so read it.

This was such a weak end to the trilogy. I felt none of the tension from this supposed war and the bad guys were just there to be bad. We knew nothing about the spirit kingdom, or anything about the other kingdoms for that matter. How different were their cultures from one another, what did the people do, hobbies??? Also, are the positions of king and queen just purely titles, because these kings were certainly chill in leaving their kingdoms and people whilst they frolicked around. I am honestly so angry I wasted my time finishing this series.

I read all 3

While the novels were tedious I was genuinely curious to know how November and Auden would pan out. Turns out I wasted my time. All for nothing. Not impressed, could've been a million times better.

This can’t be the end!

There was such a good crowd that we grew attached to in the trilogy that I’ll need more books just to satisfy my curiosity!

Examples:
-How Elyn’s love interest started..
-What eventually happened to Klaus, does he get a second chance?
-Will there be a book following one of the newer women from earth till she finds her person?
- will there be future books based on the earth/Avalon interactions and possibly women who opt to become faeries?

This was just a really good world and there are so many things to learn and explore.

Examples:
-who took over the spirit kingdom after more and Ien are gone?
-what about the other kingdoms & how they transform?
-how do the unmarried faeries present in magic?
-will there ever be a prequel explaining the original faeries and what actually happened and how/why they were wiped out??

Now that I’ve voiced my million questions, I will say, the ending does give a lot of closure to the main character love interests AND briefly touches upon a HEA for all 3 women. It alludes to a peaceful time between worlds and its satisfying overall. I just loved the originality of this world and all the possible directions other books could be taken to further explore the world, the other characters we met and the ones we hadn’t. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but seeing how good merlo was to his brother and how damaged Klaus was, I kind of want Klaus to get a HEA because I feel like M’s would be having his brother healthy again.

A quirky twist on life, love and the pursuit of happiness!

"I get tired of reading about strong heroines. Isn’t that phrase just kind of insulting? As if being able to fight, or being rude, or being physically fit is what makes a woman or a female character strong. Strength isn’t kicking someone’s ass or ripping out their throat. Strength isn’t cruelty. Strength is the ability to get up when you’ve been knocked down, to face your fears, to do things you don’t want to do because they need to be done. Sometimes, strength is just telling yourself at the end of the day, with tears in your eyes, that tomorrow will be better. I love Noa for her strength, and I love her for her weakness. I love that she takes what life throws at her, and that she’s not perfect, and that she’s just doing her best and sometimes failing. I love the way she finds herself in Avalon. The healing sort of friendship and love that she creates with Auden. The way that they look out for each other, and the way that they’re both lonely souls who find each other and choose to love each other. To me, Noa is a strong woman. And I’m so glad that I had the chance to tell this part of her story. -Lola Glass"

PREACH IT SISTA!! And think you for this series! I enjoyed it immensely! No hairless cats for me either!

Wonderful finale to series

After gobbling up the dragon series, I was afraid this series was going to descend into the same sort of bedroom scene orgy that made the dragons a bit boring.
Happily, it never happened.
The bedroom scenes did happen in the final book but it doesn't drag on and on, just enough to satisfy that the characters have a happy love life and moving on!
Loved the book, loved the conclusion and plot twist.
I think all sorts would enjoy this book and if you took out the genetalia and sex jokes oh and the scenes, it would be so awesome for the YA audience. Maybe that's not as profitable as the adult audience tho.
The book struck me as a better version of the human/fae trope and jts def worth reading.
Loved it.
Could see this author really settling into her powers of storytelling and am interested to see in what order she's written her books!
Loved that the characters weren't stereotypes of frat girls (which is kinda typical), and instead sensible characters who don't throw themselves mindlessly into the sort of misadventures most authors adopt.
give it a go! definately in my would recomend series.
Its sooo different but i would love to see a mashup of this author WITH the classic Dragonbone throne author, Tad Williams.
Gold. A girl can dream.

Enjoyed the series

While it could probably have been 2 books rather than 3 pacing and length-wise, I know there are more than just stylistic choices at play here. The main characters and relationship development were well done. While I'm always frustrated with a slow burn during the journey, but I always look back and appreciate it after the fact.

The one thing that seemed a bit superficial was the world building. For a 3-book series, the world building for Avalon was pretty light, skipping over most details about its power, economic, and social structures. It honestly sounded like a super quiet and almost boring place to live excepting the pristine natural and magical environment itself. I was pretty disappointed with the lack of responsibility from the main characters. Like they are accepting all the privileges of ruling without much of the responsibility. Just being the first successful pairing does not mean they are good rulers. It would have made more sense to me if they had chosen to change the power structure or stepped down to enjoy what seems like a pretty carefree lifestyle... but in the larger scheme of things, it is more of a minor note (hence the 4 stars)

Honestly, like Ms.Lola said , "I love Noa for her strength and I love Noa for her weakness. Its really to hard to find heroines, that aren't battle hardened and tough as nails, though I do love them, or just plain stupid, like "I don't know how to fight, but I need to be in the middle of all the battles, so I can put myself and moreover, distract the people who do know to fight, and I might just develop extraordinary powers, that changes the course of the battle, and HEA." Yeah, not really a fan of those kind of heroines. I really loved the world buliding, and enjoyed the slow evolution of the relationship between Noa and Auden.
What could have been better was the antagonist, I guess. That was pretty easy to guess and ending was wrapped up too perfectly, in the sense that conflict and problems expected were brushed off, and solved a little too easily, honestly I was more interested in Kalus and Merzo and how they adapted. But overall, a good series.

So good!

I loved this series and it’s characters. November was a strong character, and not it the typical sense of the word but in the way women should be strong. How she responded when she was dealt some difficult situations, by understanding her emotions and not letting them control her. I also loved that she had time to really deal with her pain and to start to overcome it by starting to understand it. I absolutely LOVED November’s and Auden’s relationship, they were true partners and friends. They did things together, not being dumb and running off to do something that one of them thought was right, and potentially hurting the other, but working together to figure out how they should handle whatever was thrown at them. You don’t find many character relationships that work like that. Thank you Lola Glass!

So wisting good! 😍

This series has been the best I’ve read in forever. In fact, I believe it is my favorite fantasy romance ever. Here is why- November grows, but doesn’t change her character throughout the books. The evolving that needs to occur does, but she doesn’t become what she wasn’t to begin with if that makes sense? She doesn’t become what everyone around her is, she isn’t a violent person when you meet her, and she never becomes someone who does. I loved that about her. It mimics real life, and her story seemed so real..well for a faery 😂 it also helps that I couldn’t guess what was about to happen, which is a rare thing in this genre. I stayed on the edge of my seat, and Lola Glass now has loyal reader in me! 10 out of 10! Now I’m going to go devour more books by this author❤️

This was an excellent end to this series. I loved seeing Noa and Auden’s relationship develop. I love how real these characters always feel and the realistic relationships. Noa still isn’t over things from her past and still has doubts. I liked that it wasn’t magically fixed. And I liked getting more of the other characters too. Their stories were great to read too. And this book was also action packed! The threats of the last book are very much still present and there was a lot of action. I liked getting to see more of the world and the magic too. I really loved this whole series. Lola Glass truly shines in fantasy and I can’t wait for what’s next! I definitely recommend picking up this series and the rest of her books!!

rare I give a 5!

I just luuuuuuvd this series! It really had it all, slow burn, complicated but strangely reasonable men, and an exciting story all around. What I loved most about this series is the completeness of it. The slow buildup of the relationships, the richness of the story, and the satisfaction of a complete and full ending. You get so invested in the characters as a reader, that sometimes you feel let down that there isn’t a fuller ending and epilogue but not with this one. It feels complete. I also loved that there’s a mystery to where the characters are going, not too much foreshadowing and I really appreciate that. This series was worthy of a review, so check it out!

Nova is the best!

At the end of this novel, Lola Glass dedicates an afterward to her heroine, November. How she explain her is exactly how she comes across in the novel: strong and resilient without being rude and reckless.

For some reason, female main characters are made to express false strength. They don’t ask for help. They fight their own battles, and never know when to chose peace. I hate those kind of characters. To me, they come across as misguided and immature.

Nova is everything a heroine should be. Every time she considered running into trouble, she considered all of the consequences. It was refreshing to read, and I fell in love with this book because of her… and Auden.

Great characters and an enjoyable read

I really enjoyed this series! It was a great escape for me and an easy read. I love the characters in the book, the world Glass created, and the magic qualities of the different Fae. November is tough, loving, willing to step into the unknown but also a bit oblivious to Audin’s feelings. Audio is strong, passionate, temperamental when he needs to be and a great partner. Only constructive criticism I have is that a lot of scenes felt too short or abruptly transitioned. I’d love the initial sacrifice scene to be more drawn out, more romance details when intimate, and more time in the Fae world. Also, I would have loved to know more about the 8 women who stayed behind… perhaps a 4th book? :)

Different, light, enjoyable read

I really liked this series. It made me smile, feel sad, read up, laugh. The dialogue between the main characters was well written. World building could have been better I didn’t feel like I could actually SEE Avalon in my mind. Descriptions of the characters were ok but they remained mostly faceless in my mind through the book. This was the final book in the series and I thought it wrapped everything up well. I really loved the romance between noa and Auden. I like when a series focuses on the love story rather than politics or never ending plot lines. Overall the series was very cute with a lot of love and romance

Loved this story!!

I have loved all of Lola’s books but this one I definitely felt! November is a fantastic main character and she’s strong but not the strength, kicks ass and fights like a guy strong. I love those characters as well but I can’t ever relate to them like I could with November. Lola is such a great writer and these characters grow together in a realistic and relatable way. I’ll never become magical and grow wings but possibly I’ll get a chance at a relationship like November’s and that’s what I love most about this story! It’s 3 books and it ends in a HEA in the 3rd with plenty of spice sprinkled throughout! Read it!

"Compelled to be Fae" is the last book in this trilogy. I'm glad to say that the series was something more.
The book took from where it left us before and showered us with a watery ride. I liked how the story kept the thrill going on from the initial book till the last one.
I extremely enjoyed the transition between Noa and Chaos from being enemies to friends to lovers, it was beautiful, sweet, I just loved the book💛.
I absolutely enjoyed and loved the series and would completely recommend it 💙.

Must Read Trilogy!!!

I have to hand it to Lola she did a great job with this series, it's new for her to do a Fae series but I think she did a great job and it's definitely opened up the door for her to branch into other supernatural worlds ❤
I really loved November and the fact that she's strong in a soft way was a nice change... as always the side characters in this book were as great as the main something Lola is always great at including in her stories...
Definitely recommend reading 📚

I cannot get enough of this author and her stories. Always 5 stars for me. I am hooked!!!
I loved her story version of Fae. This is the third installment of the series and I did not want it to end. I loved all of the characters and want to read more about them. It ended well though. Just like her other stories, you get hooked into the story right from the start and cannot or do not want to put them down. Loved it! I cannot wait to read more from Lola. More, More, More!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Compelled to be Fae by Lola Glass. This third read in the Sacrificed to the Fae King trilogy brings November and Auden''s story to a close. I really enjoyed this trilogy of reads. The writing was crisp and brought Avalon into clear focus. The action and drama was tempered by romance and intrigue. I loved the way the all the characters developed and grew with the storyline. I highly recommend an escape into Avalon and the legions of Fae that call it home.

I want more!

I don't binge read but I could not stop until I finished this series. I love the world that Lola has created and I want more. There are so many interesting characters I'd like to know more about.

Thank you, Lola, for sharing this story with the world, even when you were hesitant. You shouldn't have been, though, because it is fresh, endearing and action packed with a cast of characters who made me laugh and cry, with suspense that kept my heart racing - all of the emotions I hope to experience when I open a book for the first time.

Spoiler warning

Lola Lola Lola this series *chiefs kiss*

I didn't think it could get any better but book 3 had the best friend ships I have read in a long time, it was the perfect balance of friendship, relationship and spicy

I craved more of Auden and Nove, then you hit beneath the epiology and it's just what I needed!

Having just had a baby myself it hit me right in the feels!!
I don't normally like pregnancy trope but it was the perfect ending, I dunno how I'm going to recover from this series, major book hangover
