JP’s childhood was the definition of dysfunctional, but he has a sweet set up as an adult. He bounces around, working at his siblings’ businesses, steers clear of relationships, and plans to stay child-free for life. Few commitments and even fewer responsibilities; just how he likes it. He cruises along with no shortage of women to warm his bed and fun times to be had until the universe drops a seven-month, fifteen-pound bomb in his lap.
Hannah doesn’t have a rebellious bone in her body, which is why she’s stunned to find herself traveling to Vermont to spy on her infant niece’s father. After the recent passing of her sister, Hannah’s parents are struggling and failing to deal with their new reality. They beg her to help them get custody of their grandchild in any way possible, no matter how unsavory.
When Hannah arrives in Vermont, she doesn’t find a neglectful, degenerate father as her parents predicted. Instead, she encounters JP, a man whose world was rocked to its core. Before long, Hannah is suffocating under a mountain of lies and falling hard for a man her family despises.
JP has so much to learn, but with Hannah’s help, he’s finding responsibility isn’t the dirty word he made it out to be. Instead, the more time he spends with her, the more he wonders what else he’s misjudged, like relationships.
Hannah is thrilled to help JP muddle his way through single parenthood and explore their developing feelings. But with so many secrets and challenges between them, how can this end in anything but heartbreak?
I really enjoyed this slow-burn, emotional romance. The circumstances in the story packed enough drama and conflict that could easily have gone off the rails and drowned out the actual romance journey but none of that happened and I am giddy! I felt some kind of way at every tune with this story, but it was always a positive feeling. I felt hope more than anything and the storyline warmed my heart something fierce!
Every time I read a book by Lilly Atlas, I tell myself I’m going to sit back, and binge read her backlist because she is a great author that knows when to get gritty and when to not. I know that kind of simplifies her style a bit but it’s the best sentence I can come up with that encompasses her style and voice in writing. She is real with her stories and her characters are relatable with very realistic circumstances and storylines. I really need to make the time to just binge read every story she has ever written!
I had no problems reading Shock and Aww without having read the first book in the series but I did jump back immediately to read First Comes Loathe with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I felt even better in my heart about this world that Lilly has started! I’m looking forward to reading all bout the rest of the Benson siblings!
What a fantastic story! Absolutely heart wrenching in spots, this wonderful slow burn will piece you back together and leave you with all the feels. Well written with characters you can't help but fall in love with. Hannah has the weight of the world on her shoulders. Always doing the right thing, doing what's expected. JP is the first decision that she's made that's not "right", his pull is undeniable to her. This is definitely the best case of opposites attract - her serious to JP's goofball. I just loved JP. His dysfunctional childhood clearly mad him the man he is, but he was still willing to step up - even when scared out of his mind. This book touches on so many deep subjects: nonconsent, loss of a family member, mental health issues, and grief van be someone's undoing. Truly a wonderful read that will leave you with all the warm fuzzies!
I am really enjoying this new series by Lilly Atlas. This one I was totally hooked on😊
From reading the previous book you get to know JP as the youngest brother in the Benson clan and the one who was always up for a good time, and sort of a playboy. And that’s how he loved his life. Until the day he had a one night stand with a women at a concert and that changed his whole life completely. Now its months later and he was jut handed a surprise of his life and a kink in his carefree days 😊
Hannah is the good girl in her family. Always doing the right thing and being an obedient daughter to her parents. After her sister dies her parents are struggling and wants her to check out the father of their grandchild. And to find some dirt on him and his family. But from the moment that Hannah meets the Benson family all she wants to do is be part of them. But can she live with the guilt of lying or will she have to give up her niece…
I enjoyed the story from the go. It was good to see how JP handled being a dad and just how he coped with everything. And even though his siblings were there to help, he did it on his own… Eventually 😊 Poor Hannah was between a rock and a hard place. Always wanting to do the right thing and then having to decide what is good for her and her niece. Love this family and I am so dying to read more and also when do we get to meet the other two brothers… 😊
Wow! What a book, love JP! I’ll be honest I didn’t think I would, but I’ve well & truly fallen in love with ALL the Bensons, love the family and can’t wait to read more 😍 Hannah was sweet, but for me Ronnie JP’s sister stole the show, her book is going to be great! Especially if the brothers have anything to say lol
I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this book. It was super cute. I loved watching JP navigate new fatherhood. I'm glad the author included that adjustment period, especially, as JP truly was out of his league about the demands and needs that Kayla had. I liked the premise of this story too. Not as much for the reasons Hannah's parents wanted her there, but rather so she could see for herself , that her sister had made the right choice.
Great secondary characterz, like chemistry, and a secret or two made this enjoyable. I wish that the ending had been more of a glimpse into the future instead of a HFN.
Wow these stories keep getting better and better, book 2 in the blue collar bensons series by Lily Atlas is awesome! JP is so determined to not be his father that he avoids commitment like its a disease, and children NO WAY!. Enter Kayla his baby daughter that he never knew he had by a casual hookup at a concert. She opens his eyes to the possibility of growing up and brings a long an auny that makes JP think about love and commitment as something that he might be capable of !
This gets 3.5 stars again like the first. Although I liked this much better than the first I can’t get past the editing mistakes. Like when he talks about going to take classes and has to provide for “Hannah”. Ummm, that’s an important fact considering that’s not even his child’s name. So the story was good, the errors were excruciating. Plus there was a point that said Hannah and her mother looked so much alike he was getting a glimpse into what she’d look like in the future...wasn’t she adopted??? Too many really bad errors.
Please, Lilly Atlas, can I have some more? *Holds out hands for more Blue Collar Bensons Series books.* Yes, I know this came out in January 2022, and as I write this, it's May 2022. But, but, I need more of these. Moooooore!!! I'm hooked. HOOKED. This book. THIS BOOK! I am completely hooked on the Bensons, and JP was no exception. I thought I'd be annoyed with him because he's a player, but boy, I was wrong. He made so much growth in this book. *wipes tear away* I was so proud of him. And I loved Hannah. She was such a sweetheart, and I completely related to her issues. Completely. Girl, I feel ya.
Sterling Waters, uh, I mean John Paul Benson (sorry, I couldn't help it; same cover model lol) gets the shock of his life when a social worker dumps off a baby at his doorstep. Surprise! He's a father. Oh yeah, and the mother died. Oh, and the mother purposefully punched a hole in the condom so that she could experience motherhood for a bit before she died. Now, JP--a notorious ladies' man and chill guy--is thrown into the world of parenting, kicking and screaming. Luckily, a woman shows up who offered to help with his sister's new business, and she is great with little Kayla. JP turns to her more and more for help, but then he realizes that he just plain loves spending time with her. Can this "never settle down" guy finally fall in love? And if he does, will this woman, Hannah's shocking secret break him?
Hannah is the sister who purposefully got knocked up by JP. Even though she begged her sister to tell JP, her sister refused, and Hannah had to watch as she died horribly--her last wish being that Kayla be with her father. Well, that's not acceptable for Hannah's parents. See, Hannah's mom is a psychotic narcissist, and her dad co-signs everything. It's like Lilly Atlas came into my parents house and wrote about them. Hah. (I'm not kidding.) Hannah's mom wants Kayla to be hers as her "redo baby" and can't stand JP or the Bensons. She wants Hannah to go to Vermont and spy on the family to get some dirt on them in order to challenge custody. Hannah refuses that but does agree to visit to see how Kayla is doing. She ends up hanging out with the Bensons under false pretenses, but in the ends absolutely loves them. JP is doing a great job trying his hardest at being a first time parent, and she loves helping him and generally just spending time with him. But she can't have feeling for him because he's the father of her sister's kid, for crying out loud! Plus, he would never forgive her for the lies. Still, this has been the best time of her life as she realizes what it's like to have a real, loving, caring family instead of a manipulative one. It's too bad that it can't last.
I just loved this book. I didn't think this author could top the first...but she did. The issue with Hannah's parents just really hit home with me. Narcissists are master manipulators, and Hannah's mother was playing her like a fiddle for a while there. It was awesome to see Hannah finally wake up to see how toxic her mother really was. The baby stuff really was "Aww." I laughed when JP had Kayla ready to go in the bathtub and the doorbell rang, and he was like, "Oh, I'll go get that." And then looked at the baby and went, "Shoot, I can't leave the kid here. She'll drown." That some real deal first time parent stuff right there. Tee-hee. Anyhow, I can't wait for the next one to come out. This is such a good series.
Shock and Aww (Blue Collar Bensons #2) Written by: Lilly Atlas
Shock and Aww did exactly what the title claims! There are shocks and adorable awws all the way through this story!
At the moment I am crowning JP (John Paul) as king of the Benson family. This man has not only the moves, he’s suave, handsome, knows all those “I’m gonna give you a good time baby” phrases and after the “shock” wears off, is on his way to taking the gold medal in new dad’s!
Always out for a good time JP (king of one-night stands) meets Mary Anne at the end of a concert and they spend some “quality” time together. When a social worker shows up 15 months later with baby Kayla, JP is all “nope not me, not mine, no way” and then he reads the letter. How many times in one day can someone be blindsided? The good thing is he may not know much about babies but he steps up, with his siblings support and that cute little face, JP might be off the market for now, but that’s only because a cute little smile and some baby laughing has sucked this man in!
Hannah Briggs arrived in Vermont promising herself she was just going to check on Kayla and make sure she was loved and taken care of. She had no intentions of following through with what her mother asked her to do, find some dirt on JP and help them get Kayla back. That’s not Hannah, but without her sister and Kayla being with her father now, who is Hannah? Her life has been thrown into a whirlwind of changes and the only thing she cares about right now is seeing that Kayla is well and that she is loved.
This story is filled with laughs that often have you crying. By the time JP and Hannah’s story is done, we get to see so much character growth with these two. Maybe being a grown-up isn’t so bad especially when you get yourself the cutest daughter, a beautiful girlfriend who just happens to be your daughter’s aunt and you take the biggest leap in your life…you grow up and see what an amazing person you are.
I so enjoyed reading JP, Hannah and Kayla’s story, I laughed, I cried…then I laughed some more. With the Benson family playing a huge role in all of this it makes me think, how much better will this series get and is Ronnie’s book coming soon?
This was one heck of an emotional ride for these characters as well as its readers, we were not even through the first chapter, and we were already crying our eyes out. This story gives you the feels sometimes it rips out your heart other times you are laughing as JP has an awesome family who are close, love hard, tease, laugh and love.
JP was a character who his a free spirit loves the ladies and loves his life that way, and we would even add that he was even a bit cocky and one who runs from commitments of any kind but, his fun is over, and it's time to grow up. We loved the change and growth we saw in his character, and we loved that he put his fears somewhat aside to do the right thing for his daughter.
Hannah was a wonderful character whose heart was breaking from not only feeling the loss of one loved one but, 2. Our heart went out to Hannah, she was really in between a rock and a hard place trying to please everyone without taking sides. Although she had her faults, we loved the fact that her main concern was and has been always for the safety and well-being of Kayla.
We loved the slow burn romance, the chemistry, the easiness between JP and Hannah, it all seemed so natural. We loved that from Hannah just being Hannah, JP felt trusting enough to open up about his feelings, both past and present.
The characters were remarkable JP's family awesome, little Kayla melted our heart and Hannah parents were just a mess thanks to JP family Hannah didn't have to climb the mess/mountain alone.
We loved that Kayla had so many people who loved her, she is one lucky girl. It's nice to see a couple fall in love when commitments and love is not even on one's radar, but, after meeting the right person and your life takes a complete 180 turn you have to ask yourself is that destiny or fate?
A beautifully written story that felt very real, was quite endearing and one that had so many precious moments that just melted your heart. Kayla's mom may have committed a grievous sin in the eyes of others but, it seems to me that in doing so, she healed a stranger and gave him a life he never would have had otherwise...
Wasn’t a huge fan of JP and Hannah’s relationship. It seemed more like a convenience rather than a romance. It all started with JP and his manwhore self fucking a random stranger after a Beyoncé concert in the back of her car. Yeah, he’s a keeper. That random stranger happens to be our heroine, Hannah’s terminally I’ll and unbelievably stupid/selfish sister Mary Ann. So this sister, Mary Ann, thought it would be a good idea to poke holes in a condom so she can get pregnant and have a kid before she dies. Umm…I don’t know, that sounds like a bad idea to me. 🤔
Fast forward, a year and a half later, and JP gets a visit from a social worker (whom he debates having enough time to fool around with before his evening fuck he’s planning on meeting up with later) but lo and behold, she’s their with his kid whom he knows nothing about and will now have to father. Oh well, he’ll have to scrap those evening plans.
Yeah, it’s just too stupid a premise to base a book on. That coupled with JP being such a dumbass on all fronts, I just couldn’t get behind him and Hannah as a couple.
**I forgot to mention that Mary Ann decided to give custody of the baby to JP after seeing his posts on social media with his family. They looked fun and tight-knit so why not, right? No need to maybe discuss with him first? No, just have the 7 month old baby, he doesn’t even know about, shipped across the country, away from her Aunt Hannah (whose been taking care of you and your baby for months) and grandparents (who are overly controlling but seem to want the best for the baby) and hope for the best. It just makes NO sense.

After reading this book, I want more Benson Family books. This book is a tearjerker and heartstrings pulling story. I am following this author so allow some leeway about storylines. The blurb pulled me in and the family dynamics kept me reading and enjoying. The Bensons are a big family where the older two siblings, brothers, had to grow up fast and take care of the younger children. Their father was sn abuser and locked up. Their mother was nonexistent. This family is about love, support, and acceptance. JP is the youngest male and he had made a decision to never have a serious relationship, marriage, or children never wanting to become his parents. However a consenting one night stand, unbeknownst to him, will change his life forever. Read On!
I adored this book. It really was a roller coaster of emotion and watching JP grow up and become an actual Dad was great. I love when the goofy playboy is forced to settle down and then falls hard for a woman after he’s sworn that he never will. The story between Hannah and JP is complicated because of reckless, selfish, and horrible decisions made by Mary Anne. It’s really hard not to be punched in the emotions when you consider how everyone’s world changed and how they all are suffering. There’s plenty of humor, heat, and heart wrenching moments. Such an awesome book in this series. I think Ronnie will be next and I’m already salivating for it.
Omg JP and Hannah's story quickly set me on an emotional, twisting, turning rollercoaster ride. Kayla is absolutely adorable and the banter between the Benson family was amazing and the mac and cheese incident had me laughing and crying as I mentally pictured it.. From beginning to end I couldn't put this book down and after the first few interactions these two shared I found myself fighting with them for their happily ever after. I can't wait to see what the future holds for them and see who falls next.
Commitment phobe finds out he has a baby from a one night stand.turns out he was tricked and used because a woman who is dying wants to experience having a baby. When her family want the baby back things get even more complicated. I like e the Benson clan JP is the play boy who doesn't want to be tied down. That is until his life is turned upside down. And he meets Hannah. He turns into a living dad to his little girl. Watching the transformation is sweet. I hope the series continues with the rest if the siblings.
Great book. Wow! JP and Hannah's story is very unconventional but it works for them. She was sent there to spy on JP for her parents, so they could take Kayla away from him. Keep her where they thought she should be. Throughout it all Hannah and JP had their eyes opened and a lot of truths revealed, not only about others but about themselves too. Lily did a wonderful job in telling Hannah and JP's story. I love how she still brings in all the Benson's. They are such a close knit family.
JP was the ultimate playboy until a cute baby named Kayla is placed in his life, the everything changes. Hannah is just checking up on her niece but when she expects to find JP not living up to his responsibility of being a good father but what she finds is so much more. I really enjoyed this slow burn romance and the story definitely kept me glued to the pages. Lilly Atlas is a great storyteller and I can't wait to see what she gives me next.
Second book in the Blue Collar Bensons series. Jp is the wild no strings attached guy.. She’s his daughter’s aunt. Trying to keep a promise made to her parents. Jp make it so hard to keep it simple. His a tattooed sex on a stick . His lost. His old man was a bad example how to be a real dad. Wants nothing to do with the baby. Each day he fall fast for his beautiful daughter. Hannah changes the name of the game with her touch. Together they learn that family is everything.
JP was caught by surprise when a social worker showed up with his nine month old daughter 🍼. Following Kayla and unknown to the Bensons is Kayla's aunt Hannah, sent to find dirt on the Benson family and JP. I love this author's creativity in her characters and am an avid fan. This book pulled me in emotionally from the first chapter to the end.
This book brought on all the feels! But all Lilly Atlas' book do. The scenes with JP and his daughter are hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time. The mac and cheese? I couldn't breathe. 🤣 He struggled with it, which having it dropped like that, who wouldn't? Can't wait for the next one!!! ❤
So happy to revisit the Benson family. The book started and ended in the same day. I just had to get to the HEA. JP, the youngest brother was the classic noncommittal happy guy. His world gets hit with a surprise baby and then meets his match and falls hard for Hannah. Very happy to have been chosen for an ARC and give my 5 ⭐️ rating.
Another rollercoaster of Benson style family life! John Paul Benson, he loves the ladies & they love him; single & freedom, 2 of his favorite things…until one eye-opening moment.
Enjoyed this book so much more than the first and yet loved meeting Micki again. Lots of back and forwards in the relationship but story and romance git there in the end. Loved it.
I loved this story. Atlas always has a way about her writing that as your introduced to a character you instantly know you know that person. It makes their story even more enjoyable! I can't wait to ready about Ronnie
I love this book. It’s so good and so telling. I love the focus on mental health and how it can be generational through abuse and negligence. This is just a really good book and I can not wait to see which Benson is next!
I loved watching JP grow up. Hannah is the perfect mate for him. She and Kayla make him want to do so much better in life. I love the close knit Benson family and am looking forward to more!!
This isn't my favorite Lilly Atlas book. It took a bit to really get going but once it did I liked it. I wasn't a super big fan of the way JP was portrayed at first. But he eventually grew on me. I loved the Benson family dynamic and characters tho..
JP, Mary Anne, and Hannah are all connected through Mary Anne and her selfishness. Great story with well written characters. Can't wait for Ronnie's story and the rest of the siblings.
I enjoyed the characters snd the storyline. It made you laugh, cry and get a bit mad. You will feel compassion for the characters and cheer them on throughout their struggle's. The only thing that bothered me was, it diffently needed a better edit.
