Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 12 (My Kindle Review)

MY 1,700 BOOK READ ON GOODREADS!!!

A pretty emotional volume as we see Shikimori have a one-on-one with Kamiya about her feelings for Izumi and later she expresses to her boyfriend of how much he’s changed into someone more confident and very lucky. We later see the two make a lovely fruit cake for their loved ones, and we even see a touching moment between her and her mother. The bonus story of Shikimori and her brother from their kid years is also nice. A (100%/Outstanding)

Kamiya hasn’t really gotten over her feelings for Izumi, so she’s prepared to just walk away. But Shikimori’s not just a… you know. Then we get some serious ice capades and Shikimori gets the cold shoulder, literally. But, as usual, most things are a piece of cake for our intrepid heroine.

It’s nice to see that this story remains the manga equivalent of eating a bowl of frosting. It’s delightfully sweet and, at times, enough to just rot the teeth clean out of you. Just how I like it.

First off, the showdown for the ages… again… happens when Kamiya realizes that she wants to be friends with Izumi, but she feels that her feelings are such that she can only do one thing; stop talking to him.

But, while Shikimori might not be an empath of Izumi’s caliber, she is no dummy. And she’s been quietly nudging Kamiya to be honest with herself about things. It’s nice to see people who can be friends no matter the circumstance and Shikimori wants to show Kamiya that her ‘all or nothing’ approach was a bit much.

I do think a bit gets lost in translation, which is odd, considering that’s pretty much unheard of in this series. But at times the dialogue just doesn’t seem to fit together in a logical fashion. As in, I think my interpretation is pretty correct, but something that’s quite clearly stated isn’t, well, quite clearly stated. A strange narrative wobble.

It’s still a really good story - Izumi’s always been a lot better than he realizes and him coming into his own has been a really nice arc for this entire series, honestly, and Shikimori’s well aware of how great he is. Not that she’s jealous, nor should she be - they’re so perfect together.

The rest of this volume is basically incredible cuteness and our leads being very hungry. For cake. And other things. I love how into Izumi Shikimori gets and the ice skating chapter is just so much good fluff and Shikimori being just so bad at ice skating. Maybe. Or clever like a fox.

It’s incredibly slice of life, but the kind that makes me want to go back for seconds. When they try and bake together and Shikimori keeps a hand mixer from clocking Izumi, it’s just such a moment because they’re now so used to being there for one another that what was a big deal is very comfortable.

I dunno why these two grew on me while other manga couples kind of didn’t. I suspect it stems from the fact that the story is not scared to show the bond between them and the way it does it is positively endearing.

If it hasn’t been doing it for you, mind, it won’t now. It crawled its way into my heart after a rough start and I am fairly loathe to dislodge it at this point when it’s giving me precisely what I want from it.

4.5 stars - if I wanted to read what a hug feels like, I suspect it would look a lot like this series. It’s got just about everything and something about it is a real porridge-level of ‘just right’ for me. And, in case you’re wondering, I’m rounding up because of that snowman. Okay, both of them.

This was just precious. I loved the little snowman Izumi made for Shikimori (and laughed when Shikimori put it in her home freezer). Also, I really appreciated Kamiya acknowledging that Izumi wasn't the first or only person to see her for who she is; she just never tried to listen and pay attention to other people. Its a pretty mature observation and a healthy case of self-reflection that is not always seen in romance manga so I'm thrilled when it does occur.

Anyway, looks like we're headed towards the finale! I can't wait to see what the last school year has to offer these little precious cinnamon rolls!

Konnichiwa to all, readers 🌸

Today I bring you the review of the twelfth volume of «Shikimori». That said, let's begin:

💕The volume starts with a flashback of a Kamiya girl, who covers her mouth to prevent her heart from betraying her, even losing the ability to speak. This expression of anguish connects with the present, where, nervous before Shikimori, she confesses that she still loves Izumi and plans to stop talking to him to avoid hurting her. Shikimori appreciates her honesty and accepts the cake. However, she urges her to give another one to Izumi to heal her feelings.

💕The closing of the Valentine’s Day arc of the current school year ends with the long-awaited exchange of homemade sweets between the main couple.

Izumi eats Shikimori’s sweets, despite them being hard, because of the love and effort she put into them. This results in the couple reaffirming the most positive aspects of each other once again.

💕The central chapters with a self-contained format are three. The first one takes place on an ice rink, becoming the most interesting since Shikimori feels insecure about learning to skate and points out to Izumi that she is not perfect at all sports and needs help because of that.

The other two take place at the school. The first features several humorous scenes involving her ways of cleaning, while the second occurs during a snowy day, with the most tender moment of the plot in its conclusion, as Izumi gifts her a snowman.

💕In the penultimate chapter, through the making of a fruit cake that combines humor and a subtle romantic touch, we deepen the relationship between Shikimori, her brother, and her mother, which develops in the extra chapter.

Finally, the volume ends with the class’s wish to celebrate a end-of-course party.

🌸Conclusion: This volume stands out for the good work the author does with the romantic element, as well as for delving into the context of Shikimori.

Rating: 5🌸

this super wholesome slice-of-life story keeps on rolling and I keep eating up every chapter (´꒳`)♡ I just love the female friendships in this, and how shikimori treats kamiya with such kindness and empathy. kamiya takes a big step in acknowledging a few things about herself and her relationship with izumi, including that she was able to open up and get to know the people around her, who actually did see her for who she really is. instead of taking the drastic step of cutting izumi out, she (with shikimori's gentle nudging and encouragement) decides to be just friends. it's a really beautiful, touching scene!

after this, we get a whole bunch of random cuteness, including an ice skating scene, izumi making shikimori an adorable little snowman that she takes home and puts in her freezer, and them preparing a fruit and cream cake together. I love how their relationship continues to strengthen as they grow older together!

Really enjoy the way this manga breaks gender roles and sends the message that whatever works the best for you and your relationship is the best option. Cute as always
