Still waiting.

It’s beach time, per the universal law of manga, as a shogi training camp cannot resist the lure of having its leads cavort in the sand and do all the things you are probably so over in terms of summer in manga, yet would be annoyed about were they skipped.

Well, look, this does absolutely everything it says on the tin. There are a couple of amusing spots, certainly, but this definitely rolls through like a greatest hits cavalcade. It has some moments that make it more than simply a retread, but a retread it is.

Interestingly, there’s a lot of focus on Rin this volume, as she just decides that not being a rival is beyond the pale and she starts working hard to win over Ayumu. She might as well be trying to spot a shogi piece in the desert, but she’s got an awkward aggression that I didn’t hate, except it leaves Urushi kind at sea most of the volume.

And then there’s Sakurako and Tanaka, who get a lot of focus this volume as the training camp leads to at least one couple making the plunge. The way this plays out, with Sakurako’s hypnosis nearly foiling things but instead causing them to go way over the top, is a pretty solid culmination of that relationship and quite amusing. Her deadpan declaration that they’ll probably date a lot first is very funny.

If anything, there’s a general lack of Urushi and Ayumu content minus one of the hoariest old tropes when they end up in bed together (not what you’re thinking by virtue of it being exactly what you’re thinking). This is a lot more about Rin pushing herself as the rival.

There are some nice bits. I like that Urushi is not body conscious and keen to try and snag a compliment from Ayumu on the beach. And it’s definitely an equal rights scenario - the guys are so chiselled they could be put on display at the Louvre and so washboarded they’d give a laundress the vapours.

But it’s same old same old same yet again and when your main concept is all variations on a theme and you decide to change it all up? Changing it to something that’s got even more history and has been done even more to death isn’t quite the breath of fresh air I would have hoped.

I mean, that’s harsh for something that is lighthearted fun, but, hey, that’s a review for you. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with this, truly, and I read it as soon as I saw the next volume was out, which says something on its own. I genuinely like this manga, but it’s hardly winning awards for originality and when it’s locked into its rails it is fine but unexceptional.

3 stars - fine, but unexceptional. I mean, I’m not exactly winning awards for originality either.

Progression? With some characters, yes, but the ones you want? Hmmm

sigh. yet another volume focusing on rin's useless attempts as the romantic rival. we get very little progress in the ayumu/urushi relationship because of this, and it's seriously starting to irk me. thankfully, we get some cuteness and a bold confession between sakurako and tanaka, as well as some sweet friendship scenes with maki (the curry chapter was so adorable!).

based on the covers I've seen for the upcoming japanese volumes, I know the rin plot point won't be going away anytime soon. sadly, it's knocked this series out of my comfort picks for now :/

More of a 3.5 star rating;
I really liked that we got to see everyone relaxing and having fun while away on the Shogi Training Camp trip. Seeing all of the cute moments between Ayumu and Kagawa since the girl gaining a bit more confidence in potentially pursing her crush on the male, but without sabotaging Yaotome’s crush on Ayumu. It was also incredibly adorable seeing each of the moments between Takeru and Sakurako.
Additionally, I really like seeing Yaotome’s friend: Maki since I like their friendship together; I just wish to see her interacting with the others.

I ended up devouring the first 13 of this series over the course of a couple of weeks. I really enjoyed the relationship between the main characters. It's super sweet but adorable they just have this sweet romance. The art is beautiful and I found the whole came of shogi interesting. I will continue this series. I did a blanket review for all the books I've read so for. This is a high school romance that is slow burn so and I highly recommend.

It's time for Shogi Club Training Camp! At the beach! So stay tuned for swimsuits, watermelon smashing, ranger shows, ice cream, curry, tests of courage, romantic shenanigans, and LOTS of shogi!

All I'm gonna say is, I nearly choked on my drink on page 62 because that came out of nowhere!

This series has 17 volumes.
