He knows. After that whole crazy battle over Tokyo with the other kaiju, Minami-kun knows that Kuroe is actually also Harugon-and she’s terrified to find out how he really feels. Fleeing instead of facing him head-on, she ends up back on the island of her birth. But there’s some strange people with masks over there, and it’s kinda hard to tell whether they’re friend or foe...

In the aftermath of her big day out in Tokyo, Kuroe has left the city, possibly for good. As her friend group slowly sinks into the rear view, Kuroe’s about to learn more about her origins than she probably ever wanted.

I really miss the ‘kaiju as puberty metaphor’ vibes from back when this series was new. It has tended to alternate between okay to very good since, but it really felt like it was on to something that it just sort of gave up as it went.

Most of this volume takes place on an island which figures into Kuroe’s backstory in a rather shocking way. Regrettably, this also means jettisoning the pretty good regular cast for lots more of Kuroe’s fairly annoying mother.

We can’t really go any further without talking about the other thing here. True to its kaiju and monster roots, this island is populated by what you would like to call indigenous people, but sure weren’t back in the day.

This portrayal, look, I get it, but this isn’t a pulp adventure homage. It’s really cringe to see this in a modern day book, right down to the wooden face masks. Even if they parlay that into a joke at an end, it felt pretty yikes.

I’d be lying if I said that didn’t colour a lot of the book for me. And it’s too bad because there are some good ideas amidst all this - as much as I don’t like the reveal that Kuroe is actually a kaiju using mimicry to disguise herself as a girl, rather than a girl who turns into one, it’s pretty clever as twists go.

It swerves a lot from where we left it and Kuroe is so great that it really brings the emotional weight when she realizes things, but the plot feels like it’s going all over creation and the massive gap between volumes isn’t helping either. It’s frustrating.

3 stars - I still like this series, but this volume is flawed to bits and has at least one idea that probably should have been left about twenty years in the past. Definitely not what this series can be when it’s at its best.

The author sidesteps a lot of the big reveals from last volume by separating the main character from the rest of the cast and sending her off to learn some stuff about her origins.

It's not bad, but I'd rather she were dealing with the fallout with her friends and family instead of getting involved with a bunch of new characters and their problems.

could've done without the racist caricatures of pacific islanders, but unfortunately i'm already far too in love with this series for that to be a red line for me.

i'm caught up now. why have i done this? now i have to wait for more to be published.

It says a lot about how much I've loved this series up until this point that I didn't just drop this volume around the halfway point. That's when the bizarrely out of place racist stereotypes show up, for the record. I'm not sure there was a point to having a village of humans on the monster island to begin with, and there was certainly no reason for them to be literal wooden mask-wearing "savages". I get that it's a reference to old pulp fare like King Kong, but not every reference needs to be made. I genuinely feel like it just distracted from the actually relevant plot points and character moments buried in this volume. It didn't ruin every single page of this volume for me, but it sure ruined a lot of them.

Painfully short volume

I feel like I've been waiting a year for this volume to come out and it barely lasted a half an hour for reading. So painfully short! And the story doesn't feel like it's gotten anywhere. Was there even more than one chapter? I don't feel like there was.. and now there's even more questions than they were at the end of the last volume. It's so frustrating! It's so frustrating!

While it was vastly interesting seeing Kurotan and her mother on the island and all of the chaos that went along with being on the island, I’m a bit disappointed we didn’t see more of Kurotan’s friends and their reactions to everything. I hope in the next volume we see glimpses of them navigating Kurotan’s dramatic reveal and their opinions on it.
As for everything that happened on the island, poor Kurotan deserves a massive hug and I knew I had reason to be cautious of her mother.

this volume dealt with the aftermath of the last volume, where everyone incl minami learned about kaiju kuroe. we do get some interesting lore on the kaiju and a rather tragic backstory on one of the tribe members (his lover seems to be a permanent kaiju, with no memory of her previous human life). but overall this volume seemed very short...the tribe/island arc is going to stretch on another volume I guess, which means kuroe will still be separated from everyone that so far has made this series special :(

I'm a little torn about this volume, because it did have "heavy parts", as the author notes, but it didn't feel like a lot of new information. I would've liked more time back in Japan to see how everyone is coping, instead of just a quick flash of each person. I am intrigued by this whole amnesia lore, and we do love a gigantic monster Bride. All in all, I'm excited to see what Kuro does next with all the new info she has!

This book was a mess. The plot was a bit all over the place. I still give it a 2.5 star rating because of the art. I’m honestly shocked that this series got to 7 volumes and the author’s previous work, Beasts of Abignale, only got 4, and with a hasty ending because it had been canceled to boot. I’ve enjoyed reading both, but the other series had a better foundation for the plot.

Everything in this volume went up a notch from all previous volumes, the art, the tone, the plot most of all. The story has taken a very serious turn with the romance taking a back seat. The best volume so far

so good

I figured the series would be a few gags and run out of stream but it’s actually remained poignant. One of my favorite rom-coms. Solid cuteness but also an emotional story.

Kuroe’s mysterious backstory revealed! I’m really curious on how the author is going to make this work in the end… I just wish it didn’t take forever to get another volume!!!!

Aww, Minami is still looking for her!

Her mom is keeping too much from her. There are more like her! But....why did Kinata use her memories.....?

I hate that these come out like once a year. There’s a lot of reveals for the MC but we the reader already knew. This Definitly felt more like fluff but it’s still cute and fun kaiju antics.

This volume was a long time coming but it was definitely worth the wait. Kuroe finds herself in a tropical paradise which is connected to her origin. This series continues to be an incredible love letter to Kaiju films while at the same time being a cute story of a young girl trying to find her place in the world.
