DNF
I cannot stand anachronistic books passing themselves off as historical romances. Lasted for about 100 pages and gave up, life's too short. Glad I did not pay any money for it but not glad for the precious minutes I waisted on this awful book that thinks writing contemporary characters in costume is all a historical romance is. Will avoid this writer like the plague in the future.

Utterly Ridiculous. Foiled kidnappings. Attempted forced confessions. Seduction plots of staggering stupidity. Prancing around gambling clubs.
Using late night hackneys as a female and acting like they’re NYC cabs available to take you anywhere anytime you’re ready to hail one.
You’d swear this chick had Uber and a cell phone the way she paid no mind to how she’d get home alone dressed like a prostitute from dubious London areas.
I shan’t go into the enabling relatives and servants who really should have locked this girl up for her stark raving mad schemes. Perhaps a nervous condition brought on by grief?
Never mind. Let’s all just play along and pretend this could happen in even a distorted reality. “Everyone, to the getaway carriage!”
It normalises and picks up some in latter chapters if one cares to stick with it. Then it’s just a paint by numbers whodunnit with the telegraphed villain, requisite murder attempts and resounding trouncing of baddies large and small. Convenient to the plot death included.
On a positive note, Camp does a good job portraying kids. I wanted to pick up and hug the precocious little one in the few scenes he was in.
I also quite liked Stonehaven’s mother, her kindness and the vibrancy of the descriptions of her art.
Cousin G was a delightful character with his lazy lifestyle, simple needs, dislike of exertion in any form and complaints of noisy country birds. I do think he’d have been a unique hero to spend more time with. His mind must be fascinating.
Oh as to the couple, was there one? There was a ton of random butt grabbing, boob clutching and superficial lusting, so I guess a pairing was present. They fought a bit, f*cked a bit and insta declared love after a scare.
They were pretty much trampled by the vagaries of the plot, with their entrails dragging along determinedly behind as it plodded along to the end of this delightful journey.
So overall they were pretty ‘meh’ too.
I will say, upon thinking on it, this book’s title is appropriate on many levels.

September 29, 2013Swept Away, Candace Camp (B) - This was my first Camp novel and while I enjoyed it, I wasn't overwhelmed by it. It feels just a little dated to me, and overall, the first part of the story is a little disjointed from the second half. The first act is almost farcical in that the heroine believes the hero is a criminal who set up her brother and embezzled a fortune. She and her family members, including servants, decide to kidnap the hero and coerce him into confessing. Somewhere within the silly kidnap plot is an eye-rolling few chapters where Julia instead tries her hand at seducing Deveral into confessing. I can't imagine readers believing this will work, though it does of course set the stage for some serious lusting. Julia's subsequent kidnapping plot is a failure as Deveral escapes within hours and then kidnaps Julia in turn. He's slightly more successful, but not by much as she too escapes. The upshot of all of this back and forth is that the two are caught publicly in their fiasco and are "forced" to marry. The second half of the novel shifts to the hunt for the real criminal and by that point, I felt that the romance got shifted to the back burner. That is unfortunate as I wanted to the book to focus more on how these two essentially decent people are able to resolve their conflict. I'll admit too that was distracted throughout the book by Deveral's constant and at times inappropriate lusting after Julia, especially when it occurs in the face of extreme danger. I found the villain to be fairly obvious too. All in all, not a bad read, but it didn't leave me wanting to get ahold of more Camp novels either.

I like cheesy romance books set in the regency times. Are they fine literature? Nope. Are there ever any real surprises? Nah. But they are satisfying and fun anyway.
I'm a big fan of Amanda Quick romances and recently started reading Candace Camp. This is a stand alone book (yes, I'm a sucker for trilogies or multi-series books) but it was still quite fun. Usually the female characters of these times have to be such sticklers for their reputation and never get to have any fun, but Camp seems to be adept in writing her characters in a way that they can bend convention.
The plot in a nutshell is Julie Arminger masquerades as a loose woman to seduce information out of Lord Stonehaven, a man who accused Julie's brother of an awful crime. While not exactly historically accurate by any means, it is still a fun, quick read with decent love scenes and good chemistry between the two main characters.

Swept Away (1999) I was not. The story tried to be a bit of a mystery and a romance but it failed at the romance part. The MCs fought most of the time, and only near the end did they realize that they actually loved each other .. the minimal sex scenes were near the end too.
The majority of the story was the heroine trying to clear her bother’s name … everyone thought he had committed suicide but she felt he hadn’t. In her quest for the truth Julia was foolish, stubborn, stupid, and rash. Not a likeable character. The writing and situations she was in were not in keeping with the Regency era … felt contemporary. Overall, I was bored. ⭐️⭐️
Note: I’ve read The Rainbow Season by Lisa Gregory (1979) … and this name is a pseudonym for Candace Camp, and absolutely loved it! A 5 star gem!!! So I was shocked and disappointed by Swept Away thinking it would be in the same vein. Nope. Sadly disappointed.

PAROLA DEL MESE: lettera
In realtà sono tre stelle e mezzo. Si mi è piaciuto, ma la parte iniziale non mi ha convinto più di tanto.
Domani faccio una recensione decente..ora è l'una di notte ed è il caso che io vada a letto ;)
Okay eccomi.
Il libro mi è piaciuto. Julia vuole riabilitare il nome della famiglia e scagionare suo fratello accusato di aver sottratto soldi da un fondo che gestiva con tre suoi amici e per non aver retto allo scandalo si è suicidato.
Julia crede che in realtà sia stato Lord Stonehaven, e per farlo confessare decide di sedurlo, ma non tiene conto di tante cose..
A parte i primi capitoli dove ho storto un pò il naso perchè mi sembrava un pò strano che lei avesse tutta questa libertà di azione e sfacciataggine..poi è andato via che un piacere. Davvero, personaggi ben fatti, complicati, frivoli, divertenti e quel pizzico di giallo che ha ravvivato tutto.
E' stata una piacevole lettura. La Camp si conferma la mia autrice preferita, quando ho voglia di romance divertenti, sensuali e intriganti al punto giusto. Soprattuo quando ho voglia di rilassarmi e sognare ;)

Una buena historia, pero sentí que en muchos momentos se perdía el romanticismo/conexión entre los personajes, lo presentan al comienzo al lord como si fuese una especie de libertino aunque nunca se vuelve a hablar de sus conquistas, es más, ni siquiera se resiste (o al menos piensa) a casarse!, ni un mínimo debate interno; su furia por saber que ella solo estaba planeando engatusarlo para vengarse dura muuuy poco y la mitad del libro se avoca a la investigación de quien mató al hermano de ella y porque. Los ataques que sufre la protagonista no tienen emoción alguna, no sé, a mi me gusta cuando su pareja se pone en papel de macho alfa y se vuelve loco cuando atacan a su mujer, pero eso jamás sucedió en esta historia.

Sono sempre qui a parlarvi di un'epoca assai lontana, solo perché davvero non riesco a leggere altro.
Mi è presa una strana febbre, una sorta di malattia, o forse si tratta di una vera e propria dipendenza...
Non lo so.
So solo che se devo scegliere, la mia prima opzione resta l'historical romance, meglio ancora se si tratta di una storia scritta nell'epoca della reggenza.
Non so se ve l'ho mai detto, ma la mia folle passione per la parola scritta è nata proprio con un romanzo di questo tipo, anzi credo proprio che Candace Camp sia stata una delle prime autrici che ho amato. Per questo motivo, quando fra le proposte ho notato questo piccolo libricino, non mi sono fermata un attimo, l'ho acquistato e quando l'ho letto, non mi ha delusa.
Non ne sono rimasta affatto scontenta, anzi, ho provato tante di quelle sensazioni in un giorno, ed il pensiero era sempre fisso li tra le pagine.
Quindi, se state cercando una lettura appassionante, intrigante, con un tocco di mistero, questo è decisamente il libro adatto a voi!

La zitella Julia Armiger è compromessa, così come la cognata Phoebe e il piccolo Gilbert, da ciò che è avvenuto anni prima a causa delle azioni del fratello, Selby Armiger ritenuto colpevole di aver sottratto un ingente somma al suo pupillo. Tutta l'alta nobiltà di Londra è ben decisa a tenere lontane le due donne ed il piccolo bambino, per ciò che è successo. Tuttavia chi ha conosciuto davvero Selby, non l'ha mai ritenuto capace di ciò che ha fatto, non era da lui, non poteva mai macchiare il suo onore e quello della sua famiglia, con un crimine tanto grave.
Ben determinate a risollevare il buon nome degli Armiger, Julia e Phoebe cercheranno in tutti i modi di scoprire il vero ladro.
Anche se sono ben certe della colpevolezza di lord Stonehaven, un gentiluomo freddo, distante e autoritario, che con i suoi modi ha sempre intimorito chiunque, non sarà semplice spingerlo a confessare, anche perché da uomo sveglio e arguto, non cadrà mai nella loro trappola...

It's an okay read. The first half was cute and kind of sexy w/o being gratuitously so. Hero and heroine trying to kidnap each other because of a crime that impacted on the heroine's family. Sort of bodice-ripper, but I liked it. (Sometimes I DO like bodice-rippers if they are written well enough).
The second half of the book devolved into a mystery who-done-it, but became boring. The h and h never really seemed the "meant-for-each-other" type that is the saving grace of most well-done romances.

Nowhere near as good as the previous novel I read by this author, lots of plot holes and unnecessary silliness. Basically a young girl believes that her brother was wrongly accused of embezzlement and she believes that the man who accused him is guilty of the crime. She attempts to capture him and force a confession but when that fails she attempts a seduction that goes wrong and she ends up married to the man. More than farcical this one is just ridiculous

I bought this at a library sale to fill the summer reading shelf with a few low-stress books that wouldn't be too much work. This book was OK but cooking up a plot to seduce a man she hates is kind of boring when I already know how it's going to turn out.

Me encantó mucho la historia... todo eso de la venganza estuvo muy bueno. Me gustaron los personajes principales.... fue una historia muy muy entretenida.... esta autora entra entre mis favoritas de este genero!!

Immergersi in un romance storico dopo essersi abbuffati di contemporanei, potrebbe rivelarsi un soffice balsamo che allieta la mente e stimola i sensi di noi, infaticabili lettrici romantiche. A maggior ragione se questi è un romanzo arricchito da una fragrante storia d'amore e di passione e condito con una generosa dose di battibecchi e tensione. L'eta è quella Regency, l'ambientazione ovviamente non poteva non essere che Londra. Julia Armiger è una donna determinata a scoprire la verità sulla morte del fratello Selby, apparentemente attribuita ad un suicidio. Dopo essere stato accusato da Lord Stonehaven di aver rubato un'ingente somma di denaro dal fondo fiduciario del figlio di un loro caro amico, Selby sembra essersi suicidato per la vergogna, ma sia sua sorella Julia che la moglie Phoebe, non credono a nulla di tutto ciò. Julia è convinta che suo fratello sia morto per un incidente e che, in realtà, il mascalzone che ha orchestrato tutto quanto non sia altri che lo stesso Stonehaven. Convinta di dover e poter provare a tutti i costi la colpevolezza di Stonehaven, Julia tenta di sedurlo per poi costringerlo alla confessione, non tenendo conto che il risultato di quella messinscena potrebbe rivelarsi una pericolosissima arma a doppio taglio. Julia verrà catturata dal fascino predatore e scaltro di Deverel Stonehaven e trascinata in una relazione incandescente e bellicosa. Inoltre, entrambi scopriranno che la morte di Selby nasconde, in realtà, molto più di ciò che sembra. Qualcuno trama nell'ombra affinchè gli intrighi e i segreti di quella morte rimangano celati.
Le Quattro Lettere è il primo romance, che dico, il primo libro che leggo di quest'autrice e l'esordio è stato senza dubbio positivo. Candace Camp ha intessuto una storia molto piacevole, densa di battibecchi, tensione, romanticismo e un intrigo che ha accompagnato lo svolgimento di una storia d'amore combattuta e complicata sin dal principio. Sono stata sempre attratta dai protagonisti maschili bellicosi, un po' alfa un po' presuntuosi, dominanti e convinti di sè stessi. Deverel Stonehaven ricalca questo genere di personaggio, anche se non totalmente, divenendo comunque uno degli elementi che più ho amato di questo romanzo. Il secondo aspetto, che ha reso senz'altro la storia pepata, è il personaggio femminile, uno di quelli verso cui non puoi far altro che provare simpatia e ammirazione. Tosta, tagliente, scandalosamente arguta, Julia Armiger è il ritratto della determinazione. Non si ferma davanti a niente pur di smascherare il vero colpevole della morte di suo fratello e riscattare il nome degli Armiger nella società londinese. Anche se questo vorrebbe dire sedurre l'uomo più desiderato di Londra ed affrontare il pericolo senza armatura. Julia e Deverevel formano una coppia perfetta: bellissimi, testardi, lodevoli e generosi, ma prima di capirlo dovranno affrontare diverbi, liti, incomprensioni e diffidenza. Anche la parte mistery, dedicata alla morte di Selby, ha rappresentato un elemento interessante e piacevole, nonostante io abbia comunque preferito la storia d'amore a tutto il resto. Non è un romanzo perfetto perchè a dire la verità qualche volta ho avuto l'impressione che la Camp avrebbe potuto dare un qualcosa in più agli intrecci narrativi e alla storia in sè. Ad ogni modo, è un libro che si legge piacevolmente, con una storia d'amore che ha tutte le qualità per intrigare ed attrarre le lettrici romantiche.

Julia Armiger è una donna determinata a scoprire la verità sulla morte del fratello Selby, apparentemente attribuita ad un suicidio. Dopo essere stato accusato da Lord Stonehaven di aver rubato un'ingente somma di denaro dal fondo fiduciario del figlio di un loro caro amico, Selby sembra essersi suicidato per la vergogna, ma sia sua sorella Julia che la moglie Phoebe, non credono a nulla di tutto ciò. Julia è convinta che suo fratello sia morto per un incidente e che, in realtà, il mascalzone che ha orchestrato tutto quanto non sia altri che lo stesso Stonehaven. Convinta di dover e poter provare a tutti i costi la colpevolezza di Stonehaven, Julia tenta di sedurlo per poi costringerlo alla confessione, non tenendo conto che il risultato di quella messinscena potrebbe rivelarsi una pericolosissima arma a doppio taglio. Julia verrà catturata dal fascino predatore e scaltro di Deverel Stonehaven e trascinata in una relazione incandescente e bellicosa. Inoltre, entrambi scopriranno che la morte di Selby nasconde, in realtà, molto più di ciò che sembra. Qualcuno trama nell'ombra affinchè gli intrighi e i segreti di quella morte rimangano celati.
Le Quattro Lettere è il primo romance, che dico, il primo libro che leggo di quest'autrice e l'esordio è stato senza dubbio positivo. Candace Camp ha intessuto una storia molto piacevole, densa di battibecchi, tensione, romanticismo e un intrigo che ha accompagnato lo svolgimento di una storia d'amore combattuta e complicata sin dal principio. Sono stata sempre attratta dai protagonisti maschili bellicosi, un po' alfa un po' presuntuosi, dominanti e convinti di sè stessi. Deverel Stonehaven ricalca questo genere di personaggio, anche se non totalmente, divenendo comunque uno degli elementi che più ho amato di questo romanzo. Il secondo aspetto, che ha reso senz'altro la storia pepata, è il personaggio femminile, uno di quelli verso cui non puoi far altro che provare simpatia e ammirazione. Tosta, tagliente, scandalosamente arguta, Julia Armiger è il ritratto della determinazione. Non si ferma davanti a niente pur di smascherare il vero colpevole della morte di suo fratello e riscattare il nome degli Armiger nella società londinese. Anche se questo vorrebbe dire sedurre l'uomo più desiderato di Londra ed affrontare il pericolo senza armatura. Julia e Deverevel formano una coppia perfetta: bellissimi, testardi, lodevoli e generosi, ma prima di capirlo dovranno affrontare diverbi, liti, incomprensioni e diffidenza. Anche la parte mistery, dedicata alla morte di Selby, ha rappresentato un elemento interessante e piacevole, nonostante io abbia comunque preferito la storia d'amore a tutto il resto. Non è un romanzo perfetto perchè a dire la verità qualche volta ho avuto l'impressione che la Camp avrebbe potuto dare un qualcosa in più agli intrecci narrativi e alla storia in sè. Ad ogni modo, è un libro che si legge piacevolmente, con una storia d'amore che ha tutte le qualità per intrigare ed attrarre le lettrici romantiche.

Took me forever to finish I didn't like that the hero was more concerned with bedding the heroine and that the heroine at times seemed to waiver between I am not a loose woman to he is touching my breast and laying me down in the carriage it took me month to finish and I only did because I got bored and wanted to see if it got better. Really more of a 2,5

it's a 3-4 star for me. i love the characters and there are funny moments but I feel like it hasn't reach its potential. I feel like the long conversations between other characters are a bit distracting
